Last Formal Photograph of Lincoln, with Son "Tad"

Boston, Mass. 1865 - Albumen Photograph by Bouve, Boston, Mass., February 5, 1865, image 6 1/4 x 8 1/2 in., mounted on original board, 8 x 10 in. In this albumen print, Lincoln's youngest son Thomas is erroneously called "Thaddeus," because of nickname "Tad." An unfinished Washington Monument rises in the background, perhaps referencing the funerary monument motif of a broken column as symbolic of a life cut short. Thomas "Tad" Lincoln (1853-1871) was the fourth son of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln. At the time of his birth, the Lincolns had already lost their second-born son, Edward, in 1850. The family mourned third-born Willie in 1862. "Tad," nicknamed by his father because he had a large head on a small body and wriggled like a tadpole, largely had free reign of the White House. He did not attend school and was the bane of many tutors. After Lincoln's assassination, he, eldest son Robert (1843-1926), and Mary Todd (1818-1882) lived in Chicago, where Tad was devoted to his mother. Tad died of heart failure in 1871. This image shows father and son posing for what would be Lincoln's last sitting. Construction of the Washington Monument began in 1848, but was not completed until 1884.ReferencesCharles Hamilton and Lloyd Ostendorf, Lincoln in Photographs: An Album of Every Known Pose (Dayton, Ohio: Morningside House, 1985) 220.

OVERLAND TRACTION ENGINE COMPANY. TRANSPORTATION BY STEAM FROM MISSOURI RIVER TO THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS.

Boston: Wright & Potter, Printers, . 1865 - 61pp. plus two plates and folding map. Narrow quarto. Original wrappers. Titlepage chipped on bottom and foredge, moderately dampstained. Map cleanly torn, affecting one inch of image; also cleanly separated along one fold. Moderate dampstaining of plates and pp.1-15. Some additional very light dampstaining in upper outer corner of text. A good copy. In a half morocco box. A scarce privately circulated prospectus setting forth the optimistic plan of the Overland Traction Engine Company to haul freight and passengers overland aboard steam traction engines from the Missouri River to the Rockies. The plates, lithographed by Prang & Co., show two views of the engine - one encased, the other uncovered. A fabulous idea at a time when supplies were routinely carried hundreds of miles over the plains entirely by mule and cattle trains. In the end, however, the plan was a bit short on execution. The engine weighed fifty- four tons when fully loaded with fuel and bogged down in mud on its first trial. The folding map illustrates the prospective route west from Nebraska City. A curious 19th-century railroad alternative, which was essentially a locomotive with wheels. The NUC locates six copies and we can add another at Yale. GRAFF 3145. SABIN 57977. THE FIRST OF MAY 1865 OR GENL. MOVING DAY IN RICHMOND VA.

New York: H. & W. Voight, 1865. - Handcolored lithograph, 9 1/2 x 11 3/4 inches. Lightly toned, with minor wear. Very good. A satirical political print showing "moving day" at Confederate headquarters in Richmond. The lithograph depicts Gen. Robert E. Lee loading old swords in a dog cart with two scrawny dogs attached, while Treasury Secretary George Trenholm hauls a string of boxes carrying worthless bonds over his shoulder, each bearing the name of a Confederate state. A box on the sidewalk marked "C.S.A. Treasury (on which a dog is unabashedly urinating) is also labeled as "Waste Paper," and the building in the background sports signs that read "Sheriff Sale" and "To let. Apply Lincoln & Co." Several individuals - including two African Americans, one thumbing his nose - look on. The title date of May 1 would lead one to think that this lithograph was issued on that date, but in fact it was probably issued earlier in the spring, before the collapse of the Confederacy, and is speculating on its demise with May 1 as a projected to date. In fact, Richmond was occupied by Union troops on April 3. Likewise, the reference to "Lincoln & Co." is unlikely after his death on April 15. Finally, Treasury Secretary Trenholm had resigned on April 27, although this detail might have escaped a cartoonist. A very rare image. We locate copies at the American Antiquarian Society, Library of Congress, Yale, Virginia Historical Society, and Brown University.

        Juive d'Alger

Paris: Published by A. Cadart et Luquet, 79, rue de Richelieu, 1865. This stunning image is a rich proof impression of Delacroix's famous print, "Juive d'Alger." In early 1832 Delacroix visited North Africa. He accompanied his friend the Count de Mornay on his good-will mission to the Sultan of Morocco, Abd-er-Rahman II. This experience had a drastic influence on his art, introducing an edge of brilliant realism into his majestic paintings and bold engravings. He filled countless sketchbooks with drawings and observations of Arab life and gathered a wealth of ideas that served him for the rest of his life. This sumptuous etching is inspired by Delacroix's travels in North Africa, and is considered one of his greatest prints. Assigned to the delegation as dragoman was Abraham-Ben-Chimol of Tangiers, a Jew who introduced Delacroix to his wife and daughter. Delacroix was greatly influenced by this encounter and he did a number of images depicting young Jewish women in simple interiors. This breathtaking image depicts a young Jewish woman in traditional dress, seated in a simple room; she is accompanied by an Algerian woman who is seated on the floor beside her. The leader of the French Romantic movement, Delacroix is widely considered to be one of the greatest French painters in history, but he is also one the most hailed printmakers of the modern age. The simple lines and bold textures of this monumental print delineate Delacroix's genius, and distinguish him as a true master of his art. This is an exceptional early impression of this important print, executed before the published title and publication details were added. Included in one of the first collections of the Society de Aqua-Fortistes publications by Cadart, this print is extremely rare in this early state. With its rich dark tones and fresh details, this is a magnificent example of Delacroix's work and a true collectors item. Between 1862 and 1866 the Societe des Aqua-Fortistes produced a five-volume collection of artists' etchings entitled "Euax-Fortes Modernes." Printed on laid paper made especially for the series, this outstanding collection is one of the seminal publications to spring out of the etching revival in France. The Societe des Aqua-Fortistes was the French equivalent of the Etching Club in England and similarly it aimed to produce a collection of high quality etchings by the leading artists of the period. Like the Etching Club, the Societe des Aqua-Fortistes sought to raise the prestige of the medium from a reproductive technique to a fine art. Although the etching revival began somewhat earlier in England, the French movement exerted a far greater influence on the medium, and included a wider range of prominent artists. The Barbizon painters were among the earliest French artists to participate in the etching revival, and their superb prints helped raise the medium to new heights of genius. This unique publication, which included works by Manet, Corot, and Delacroix, is an outstanding example of fine art printing at its best Delteil, Le Peintre-Gravure Illustre , vol. III, no. 18, i/iii; Beraldi, Les Gravures du XIXe Siecle, Guide de l'Amateur d'Estampes Modernes , vol. V, p. 158, i/ii. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs ; Biographical information has been taken from the website of the National Gallery in Washington, and The Metropolitan Museum in New York. Etching. Printed on watermarked aqua-fortistes laid paper. State i/iii, before letters with artist's name and date engraved in the upper left corner of plate. The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ

Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts and Green, London 1865 - With Engravings on Wood from Designs of Fra Angelico, Pietro Perugino, Francesco Francia, Lorenzo Di Credi, Fra Barolommeo, Titian, Raphael, Gaudenzio, Ferrari, Daniel Di Volterra, and others. Frontispiece, 59 single-page illustrations, and marginal ornaments, initial letters and medallions, all engraved on wood by W.T. Green, J. Cooper, J.L. Williams, R.C. West, T. Williams, W. Linton, Messrs. Dalziel, A. Williams, W. Measom, F. Anderson, J. Thompson, and H. Shaw. 4to. [251 x 198 x 54 mm]. xvi, 540 pp. Contemporary binding by Riviere (signed in gilt on the front turn-in) of dark brown goatskin, the covers with a border composed of a gilt and blind fillets and a gilt arabesque roll, mitred to a gilt and blind fillet panel, with gilt flowers between and blind arabesque cornerpieces and at the centre a gilt circular ornamental block. The spine divided into six panels, with gilt and blind compartments, lettered in the second panel, the others with a gilt centre tool, the edges of the boards and turn-ins tooled with gilt fillets, plain white endleaves, gilt edges. (A little rubbed, one corner bumped). Darlow & Moule / Herbert 1951. Copies are variously dated 1864, 1865 and 1883. The front free endleaf has been neatly removed and the fly-leaves are foxed. A good copy. Edited by Thomas Longman; the initial letters and all the decorative portions were designed or drawn on wood by Henry Shaw, and the figure illustrations were drawn and engraved under his supervision. This is one of the more impressive examples of Victorian book production. It appears that Rivere bound a number of copies, using the same tools (which we still have) but in different colours (we had one in red goatskin).

This, however, cannot be done until the Enrolling Boards shall have accomplished their work in the different counties, in administering the oath of amnesty to the people - separating the loyal from the disloyal. In the meantime the preservations of the Public peace will devolve upon the Justices of the Peace in the several counties, who have the right, on all occasions to control the Local Police, and posses the power to increase the same to such a number as they may deem necessary to meet any emergency which may arise, in which, they may think, is likely to arise ."21814.02 W.W. No Justice or other officer who is included in any of the fourteen excluded classes of the President's amnesty proclamation, will be permitted to take the oaths prescribed, or enter on the performance of duty, until a pardon shall have been received by him from the President. And the oath of amnesty is not to be administered to any one who is not disposed to take it willingly and cheerfully. If any Justice named in the commission hesitates to take the oath, it will be your duty to withhold it from him . The Clerk will make a full and complete record on his books of the proceedings of the Justices, a copy of which you will at once transmit to this office."21814.03 W.W.
