New York: H. Dexter, Hamilton & Co, 1864. 72 p. 19 cm. Brown paper covers. Spine has tears and chipped ends. Spotting to covers. Small tears in page edges. In 1863, during the American Civil War, two men co-authored this pamphlet, apparently in favour of the idea and practice of miscegenation. Its tone, however, suggests satire or inflammatory intent, and its real purpose was to discredit the Abolitionist movement and the Lincoln Administration by playing on racist fears common among whites. Pretending to be enlightened Abolitionists in favour of promoting the intermarriage of whites and blacks, the authors coined the term "miscegenation, " meaning sexual relations or marriage between races. Page 61 refers to the presidential race of 1864 and suggests that the Republicans, Lincoln's party, should favour miscegenation in their platform. Needless to say, the pamphlet provoked controversy. The authors mailed out complimentary copies to prominent Abolitionists, requesting their opinions. The replies were generally favorable, expressing admiration for the pamphlet's ideals but urging the author to be cautious and not to make miscegenation an issue in Republican politics. However, the pamphlet was soon being advertised in Abolitionist papers and, before long, the Democratic press attempted to depict Republicans as promoters of mixed-race marriage. Eventually the truth came out-the pamphlet was really written by Democratic newspapermen. One of them, David Goodman Croly (1829 – 1889), was an American journalist associated with the New York World. The other, George Wakeman, also wro … [Click Below for Full Description]

Correa, Gaspar
Lisbon, Academia Real das Sciencias, 1858-1864. Small folio (234 x 278 mm). 4 volumes. XXX, 1013, (1) pp. 482, (4), 483-985, (1) pp. 438, (2), 439-909, (1) pp. 756, 98, (2) pp. With 23 lithographed plates showing views and portraits. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. First edition of the "Legends of India", one of the earliest and most important works about Portuguese rule in Asia: a massive contemporary account of Portuguese exploration in the East during the first half of the 16th century. The plates, reproduced from the author's own drawings in the manuscript, include the famous views of the settlements of Hormuz and Aden. - The historian Gaspar Correa (1492-1563) lived mostly in Portuguese India, first as a soldier and then as secretary to Afonso de Albuquerque. His "Lendas da Índia" is considered an indispensable contemporary work of reference, owing to the author's 35 years in the country and his access to privileged sources unknown to Lopes de Castanheda or João de Barros. The 3,500-page manuscript was brought back to Portugal shortly after Correa's death, and copies circulated among a very limited number of persons. His family retained the manuscript of the original, which was published by the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon over a period of six years. - A fine copy bound by Antonio Cardoso Henriques, Porto, with his labels to first pastedown. Inscribed to Antonio F. dos Santos on title-page. Latterly in the collection of Dr. João Braga ("Engenheiro Agronomo") with his bookplate to pastedowns (a rooster with the motto, "While I Live I'll Crow"). [Attri … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alexander Stephens
Crawfordsville, GA: 1864. Crawfordsville, GA. 1864. ALS. Envelope, 6 x 5 1/2 inches laid flat, postmarked April 20, 1864 Richmond, VA on CSA Executive Department envelope addressed to the Vice-President of the Confederacy Alexander Stephens. Envelope is incomplete with several pieces missing from the edges; 1/2 of postage stamp missing and 'derate' missing from Confederate on return address. Manuscript on verso apparently docketing the content of missing letter. However, enough content remains to tantalize any historian of the Confederacy. The docket in manuscript (in secretarial hand of Jefferson Davis) is dated April 19, 1864--Richmond, VA "In reference to the release of David F. Cable...." David Cable a lawyer from Ohio and captured by the south wrote to Vice-President Stephens requesting a meeting promising information on a cabal hoping to unseat Abraham Lincoln in the upcoming election and achieve peace and independence for the south. While Davis and Stephens did not get along, Stephens felt that Cable had enough credibility to ask President Davis to parole Cable so Stephens could meet with him. This meeting apparently never took place. In Stephens' hand below Davis' note it reads, "I should wait to see Cable is liar from the result of the examination...would detain me four days from Richmond." The Confederate Congress was due to convene soon and some historians link the Cable affair with an attempt to keep Stephens away from the opening of the Congress in Richmond. A good Civil War historian can fill in the blanks of this enigmatic fragment. Also included is a CDV of … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts, & Green, 1864. First edition. THE FIRST PUBLISHED DESCRIPTION BY BABBAGE OF HIS ANALYTICAL ENGINE, THE FIRST GENERAL PURPOSE COMPUTER. AN EXTRAORDINARY COPY: FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY BABBAGE TO EMPRESS EUGENIE AND IN A MAGNIFICENT ROYAL PRESENTATION BINDING. An autobiographical review of Babbage's career and inventions, Passages from the Life of a Philosopher contains Babbage's first and only detailed public description of the Analytical Engine, the first "Turing-complete machine" capable of functioning as a full-fledged universal computer. Though Babbage had publicly described (in 1822) his earlier invention the "Difference Engine"- capable of computing the values of polynomial functions (using the method of finite differences) - Babbage was publicly reticent about his vastly more powerful Analytical Engine. An account of the Analytical Engine was published by L.F. Menabrea and translated from French to English by Ada Lovelace, with the addition of Lovelace's valuable commentary, but a detailed account in Babbage's own words did not appear until he published Passages in 1864. On the Analytical Engine: "After building a functioning, albeit only part-finished, prototype for the Difference Engine, Babbage went on to dream up a machine that more closely adheres to the definition of a modern computer. Babbage called his new invention the 'Analytical Engine'... Republican National Committee
[New York: National Union Executive Committee, 1864. Broadsheet, 9" x 11.5". Caption title [as issued], printed in double columns. Light spotting, mild wear, Good+. An 1864 campaign broadsheet, attacking the Democratic Party for refusing to condemn "those leaders of the old Democratic party who plotted the overthrow of the Government and the disruption of the Union." Instead, at their Chicago Convention "they denounced the war against the Rebellion." The opinions of War Democrats who support the government and oppose their Party's peace-at-any-price platform are prominently displayed. These include Generals Daniel E. Sickles, A.J. Smith, John A. Dix, Benjamin F. Butler, and John A. Logan. They condemn supporters of the Democratic platform, and treasonous remarks of Copperheads like Ohio Representative Clement Vallandigham. "Here are the opinions and sentiments of some of the ablest and most distinguished DEMOCRATS of the United States. Will you listen to them, or to the conspirators and sham-Democrats who misrepresented the Democratic sentiment of the country at Chicago? Which is the truest Democrat, General Jack Logan, of Illinois, or Vallandigham, of Ohio?" Not in Nevins, Bartlett, Sabin. OCLC locates nine copies under three accession numbers [as of May 2016].

Al-Matba'a al-Kubra, Cairo, 1864. 336 pp., Arabic text within borders, edited by Nasr al-Hurini, browned paper, ink inscriptions in margins, note by previous owner on front title page. Copy in very good condition. The principal work by Abu al-Qassim al-Zamakhshari is his commentary on the Qur’an entitled "Al-Kashaf ‘An Haqa’iq al-Tanzil" which was completed in 1134. His literary efforts were mostly devoted to dogmatic exegesis of a philosophical nature, rather than tradition, particularly in the lexicographical side of his work, concentrating fully on the readings and supporting his explanations by ample abstracts from the old poetry. Al-Kashaf retained a high place in Islamic literature. Numerous commentaries and explanations of the Kashaf were published by several scholars. Al-Baidawi, for example, produced his own work trying to surpass al-Zamakhsahri’s al-Kashaf in the accuracy of grammatical exposition and by quoting variant readings. This commentary by Muhibb al-Din is one of the earliest works on the subject. Size: 8vo [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[CIVIL WAR].Broadside, "The Excursion of the Bought Nominations, The Large Balloon 'Union League,' Will Start Immediately. The Balloon is managed by the Old Hunkers in the Ring." [1864]. 4 ¾ x 8 ½ in.Historical BackgroundThe Union League Club formed in New York in 1863 to support Union troops and cultivate civil devotion. Made up of prominent citizens in New York, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, New Haven, and Chicago, the clubs raised money to provide for the U.S. Sanitary Commission and establish a group of political elites to sustain Union military efforts. The league favored a strong central government, tariff protections, and internal improvements. The "Old Hunkers" were the conservative branch of the New York state Democratic party in the mid-nineteenth century. They favored the status quo, whether in business or on the contentious issue of slavery. The more progressive "Barnburner" faction stood in opposition to the old Hunkers, and were against slavery, strong state powers, expanding the public debt, and government subsidizing businesses.Though the Old Hunkers shared many similarities in terms of business philosophy with the Union League—especially that of strong central government power and infrastructure improvements—the disconnect between the two groups' stance on slavery makes this cartoon perplexing. Are the Old Hunkers carefully managing the political situation (the balloon) through the New York political machine (note the capital "R" of Ring, as in the infamous Tweed Ring)? Or are they setting the progressive Union Leaguers adrift?

Election of 1864]
[New York, 1864. Broadside wood engraving, oblong 9-5/8" x 7-7/8". Blank verso uniformly toned, Very Good. "Columbia repudiates Democratic presidential candidate George Brinton McClellan's endorsement of the platform devised at the August 1864 Democratic convention in Chicago. The text below the picture provides the dialogue, descriptive notes, and identification of the main characters. Columbia: 'What a shame that a man who was educated at my expense, and whom I have since honored and petted, should have allowed himself to be allured by ambition into such company, and upon such a Platform! His Letter cannot conceal his real position, nor hide those odious 'planks;' neither can it reconcile me to his traitorous companions. I DISCARD BOTH HIM AND THEM FOREVER'." [Reilly] Onlookers include the discredited James Buchanan, Fernando Wood, Horatio Seymour, Clement Vallandigham, Franklin Pierce, and other Copperheads. Reilly 1864-22. Weitenkampf 144.
