ENGAGEMENT OF J. WILKES BOOTH THE EMINENT YOUNG AMERICAN TRAGEDIAN, WHOSE FORMER TRIUMPHS IN BOSTON HAVE BEEN HANDSOMELY ENDORSED BY THE MOST EMPHATIC SUCCESS IN ALL THE PRINCIPAL CITIES OF THE COUNTRY, WILL MAKE HIS FIRST APPEARANCE HERE, THIS SEASON, IN RICHARD III [caption title]

[Boston, 1864. Broadside, 14 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches. One very small patch of dampstaining, several faint marks from formerly glued areas. Near fine. An eerie handbill advertising John Wilkes Booth in the leading role of Shakespeare's "Richard III," to be performed at the Exhibition Hall of the Boston Museum, April 25, 1864, just under a year before he would assassinate Abraham Lincoln. The character of the Duke of Gloucester was in fact one Booth's most well-known and well-regarded parts, and he performed it numerous times across the country to great acclaim, beginning when he first appeared in the title role in Montgomery, Alabama, on Dec. 1, 1860. The role was also one that helped to make both his father Junius and his brother Edwin famous. This handbill advertises what must have been one of Booth's last performances of Richard III, since he did not perform the part again after 1864. The broadside also promotes an orchestral performance and a one-act farce entitled, "Hit Him, He Has No Friends," to precede the main entertainment. A fascinating piece of ephemera publicizing Booth's portrayal of one of Shakespeare's most treacherous characters, who famously declares in his opening soliloquy, "I am determined to prove a villain."

Ancient Syriac documents relative to the earliest establishment of Christianity in Edessa and the neighbouring countries from the year after our Lord's ascension to the beginning of the fourth century. London, Williams and Norgate, 1864.

1864. Folio (232 x 295 mm). (2), XIV, 196, 112 pp. Contemp. blindstamped cloth with giltstamped title to spine. First edition. - In 1837, Cureton (1808-64), assistant keeper of manuscripts in the British Museum and the only oriental scholar in the department, was commissioned to prepare a catalogue of the Arabic manuscripts, the first part of which appeared in 1846. "But a new study had already engaged Cureton's attention. During his official occupation at the British Museum immense additions had been made to the collection of Syriac manuscripts. When he entered the department these numbered about eighty; but the accession of numerous manuscripts of the highest importance from the Nitrian monasteries, which were purchased and brought over partly by the mediation of Dr. Tattam in 1841 and 1843, raised the total to nearly six hundred. Cureton, who knew nothing of Syriac when he came to the department, set himself zealously to work to conquer the not very serious difficulties of the language, and to set in order and classify the new acquisitions from the Nitrian valley. His labours while drawing up an outline catalogue were amply rewarded by the discovery of many manuscripts of the highest interest" (DNB). The present work was published, after his death following a railway accident, by William Wright (1830-89). - Occasional slight foxing; on the whole an excellent, unusually wide-margined copy. From the library of the Ducs de Luynes at the Château de Dampierre: their bookplate reproducing the arms of Charles Marie d'Albert de Luynes (1783-1839), 7th Duc de Luynes, on pastedown.         AQS ("Prof. Dr. Joh. Purkyne"). Prague, 6. IV. 1864.

Purkinje is known for his discovery of Purkinje fibres, the fibrous tissue that conducts electrical impulses to all parts of the ventricles of the heart. Other discoveries include Purkinje images, reflections of objects from structures of the eye, and the Purkinje shift, the change in the brightness of red and blue colours as light intensity decreases gradually at dusk. Purkyne also introduced the scientific terms "plasma" and "protoplasm". During the last years of his life (from which thre present quotation dates), Purkinje "repeatedly stressed the importance of science and knowledge in practical life. His work [...] was of great importance in the Czech national revival and exerted a lasting effect on the subsequent development of science in his country" (DSB XI, 217).

Autograph letter signed. Starnberg, 25. VI. 1864.

1864. Large 8vo. 5 pp. on 3 ff. Includes autogr. envelope with embossed sender's monogram and initials on verso. Long, important letter to Josephine Maier, mother of Wagner's close friend Mathilde Maier. As a matter of form, Wagner's oft-quoted request that Mathilde move in with him as his companion is directed to her mother: "My dear and esteemed friend! Only to someone to whom I already owe so much love and true dedication as I do to you may I dare submit a question and indeed a request as I must today. I must now decide how to go about keeping my home tolerable in such a fashion that the fine external security now achieved also serves my inner prosperity. As you know, I live in separation from my wife: my desire to transfer my household to a female being has recently become so strong in me once more that I seriously considered whether it might not be better to call back my wife rather than live alone. Only the conviction, gained from long experience and confirmed by the observations of all my friends and relations, that a reunion must needs bring about for the both of us a condition much less bearable than separation, has utterly disabused me of this plan [...]" (transl.). - While this remarkable letter is addressed to Josephine Maier, Wagner sent it directly to Mathilde Maier, who read it without passing it on to her mother. She rejected Wagner's offer, but remained his friend for the rest of his life. Published in M. Dürrer (ed.), Richard Wagner. Sämtliche Briefe, vol. 16. Briefe des Jahres 1864, Wiesbaden/Leipzig/Paris 2006, no. 204, p. 245ff., commentary p. 599 with references to earlier editions.

Endpapers slightly toned, corner chipped from lower rear corner of free endpaper in Vol I. Bookplates on front paste-downs of the Greenock Library Reference Only). A near fine, bright set with crisp bindings and uncracked hinges. Rare and desirable in the original publisher's bindings. An extremely important work on British Folk traditions, healing, lore and magical traditions. In most cases the original Anglo-Saxon text is given, with an annotated English translation on the facing page. The two volumes offered here (of the three volume set) contain the principal treatises, the third volume (issued later, and not present here) was an addendum containing more minor works. The first volume contains a Preface examining the availability and influence of Greek and Latin medical texts in Anglo-Saxon times. It reproduces an Anglo-Saxon version of the Herbarium of Apuleius, followed by an Old English version of the "Medicina de Quadrupedibus" of Sextus Placitus and a series of short medical texts (called "Leechdoms"), most of which were gathered from the fly leaves of old manuscripts. This is followed by a series of charms on diverse subjects. The Second Volume contains a Preface which examines aspects of life in mediaeval Britain and sets the context for the "Leech Book" that follows. This text - known as "The Leechbook of Bald" is a treatise on folk medicine in three parts, and is taken from a tenth century manuscript which was once the property of Glastonbury Abbey. The book includes a Glossary and Index of Proper Names.

Anne. R. Statutes and orders of the most ancient and most noble order of the Thistle, revived by Her Majesty Anne, by the grace of God, Queen of Scotland, England, France, and Ireland, defender of the faith, sovereign of the said most noble order for the better regulating the proceeding and solemnities thereof, in all the circumstances therunto belonging. Edinburgh : Printed by the Caledonian Press, 31 South Hanover street, 1864. Beau volume, probablement fort rare.

Original printed wrappers, back wrapper lacking, spine repaired with gummed paper. Light spotting but very good. Together 2 items. Owne First Edition, Rare in Original Parts, of the Apologia; First Edition of the Correspondence. Newman, one of the key figures in the religious history of 19th-century England, was a leader of the Oxford Movement, a group of Anglican clergymen who objected to what they saw as the Church of England’s increasing theological liberalism and argued for the restoration of many pre-Reformation Christian beliefs and liturgical practices. In 1845, after a period of soul-searching, Newman left the Church of England and was received into the Roman Catholic Church; after being ordained as a priest, he continued to exert influence through his sermons, lectures and writings. He was created a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1879. In January 1864 the Rev. Charles Kingsley, an anti-Catholic, published a review of Froude’s History of England in Macmillan’s Magazine in which he accused Newman of advocating for deceit and untruthfulness in the Roman Catholic clergy. After an exchange of letters, collected and published in Mr. Kingsley and Dr. Newman (no. [2] above), Newman issued his landmark Apologia pro vita sua, a spiritual autobiography and defense of Catholicism against Kingsley’s criticisms. “From [this] time on his integrity was wholly vindicated, and his position both as a human being and as a member of the Roman Catholic Church became a great deal easier” (Printing and the Mind of Man, p. 190). We are offering the Apologia in the original eight parts, issued between April and June 1864; a revised book-form edition appeared in 1865.
