ALBUM PALLIERE ESCENAS AMERICANAS REDUCCION DE CUADROS, AQUARELLES, Y BOSQUEJOS

Buenos Aires: En venta en la casa de los S[eño]res Fusoni H[erna]nos, 1864. Lithographed titlepage plus fifty-two lithographed plates (nearly all tinted), plus two original printed wrappers. Oblong folio. Later half dark blue morocco over blue pebbled cloth boards, boards and spine gilt. Spine extremities and hinges worn. Light to moderate foxing on some plates, primarily in margins. A very good copy. A very rare album of fifty-two South American scenes, originally drawn by León Pallière and finely printed as lithographic plates in Buenos Aires by J. Pelvilain. The plates include views and portraits of local inhabitants in Argentina (44), Brazil (4), Uruguay (2), Chile (1), and Bolivia (1). Pallière, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1823 to French parents, travelled to France as a young child and eventually studied art there under F.E. Picot. He continued his artistic training both in South America between 1848 and 1850 and in Europe between 1850 and 1855. He then returned to South America, travelling for the next decade in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Bolivia, and producing the images found in this volume. The views consist primarily of rural scenes, and many of these images portray local inhabitants in a variety of activities. These illustrations and the other images of the native and mestizo population represent a variety of local types and occupations including Indians; rural and urban mestizo laborers (including a milk man and a bread seller); middle and upper class women in a theatre gallery and in church; working men in pulperias; black men and women at a market in Bahia; gauchos; soldiers (apparently rural conscripts); and even a surveyor in the countryside. A number of the lithographs focus on life in the country: on the plains, in camp, and at home. One such image, of a couple standing outside a straw house, includes a ten-line romantic poem by R. Gutierrez. A marvellous and extremely rare album, with no copies on OCLC. Originally issued in parts, this copy comes with wrappers printed on colored paper from two of those parts laid in. PALAU 211114. BORBA DE MORAES, p.648.

Engagement of J. Wilkes Booth, The Eminent Young American Tragedian . . . in Richard III (theatrical broadside)

Boston: F.A. Searle, 1864. Civil War era broadside for the April 25, 1864 performance of Shakespeare's "celebrated tragedy" at the Boston Museum, starring John Wilkes Booth as the treacherous Richard III, one of his favorite roles: "The eminent young American tragedian, whose former triumphs in Boston have been handsomely endorsed by the most emphatic success in all the principal cities of the country, will make his first apperance here, this season, in Richard III." One year later, upon learning of Abraham Lincoln's plan to extend suffrage to the former slaves, Booth would shoot and kill the president at Ford's Theater, crying "Sic semper tyrannis!" in a burst of vainglory worthy of Shakespeare's Richard. A chilling piece of theatrical and wartime history, an assassin playing an assassin. Paper broadside, printed in black, measuring 6 by 14.5 inches. One tiny dampstain, a few light smudges. Unframed.

1864 Wisden : Paperback with Facsimile Spine and Covers

Hi, This is a Wisden from the Adrian Ellis Collection. 1864 : Paperback with facsimile Spine & Covers - 1st Edition! This Wisden was first listed as a rebind, it was from the Auty collection and hence we thought it was a valid listing with the Auty boards, however the binding wasputting pressure on the frist 2 pages and they were starting to tear down the line of the binding which was 1cm into the book and hence we took the book out of the binding and added facimile covers and a spine and touched up the small tear that was appearing. We have kept the Auty page if needed. The covers and spine are very well made and internally the book is nice and clean, there is some rounding to the pages and the last page has a small loss to the top of it as can be seen in the pictures. A small tear was forming thanks to the binding to the first 2 pages, this has been repaired.

The Siberian Overland Route From Peking to Petersburg, through the Deserts and Steppes of Mongolia, Tartary, &c.

1864 - First edition. With 2 folding maps, illustrated frontispiece, vignette and nine engraved plates, many after photographs by 'Beato'. 8vo. Original emerald cloth with blind stamped decoration of a temple to boards, and ornately bordered title to spine in gilt. An excellent copy, in a navy slipcase. [i]-xii, [2], 402, [2]ads. pp. London, John Murray, As a trader, Alexander Michie (1833-1902) spent a number of years travelling in China and is best known for his writing on that country. After one particularly dramatic trip, during which he joined an expedition up the Yangtze River to protect British trade, he returned to England by the route of Siberia (ODNB). That trip, in 1863, fruitedThe Siberian Overland Route which relates Michie's passage between the capitals of China and Russia. On the first page Michie states John Bell (1691-1780) as his inspiration, and the author is quite right in saying (in the preface) that no comparable English-language account of travel across Siberia had been given since Bell. As a result Michie's narrative is an important document of that expanse, which was forever changed by the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway in the years 1891-1916.         Le livre de l'agriculture d'Ibn-al-Awam (Kitab al-Felahah). Traduit de l'Arabe par J.-J. Clément-Mullet. Paris, A. Franck (Albert L. Herold succ.), 1864-1866.

1864. 8vo. 2 vols. (instead of 3). Contemp. purple half calf with marbled boards and endpapers. First French edition of Ibn al-'Awwam's famous "Book of Agriculture", probably written towards the end of the 12th century and regarded as the most comprehensive agricultural treatise in Arabic. The author "gathers all the knowledge of his time concerning agriculture, horticulture and animal husbandry into a huge compendium of excerpts from all the previous agronomical traditions and treatises [...] To these he often adds his own observations and experiences [...] He records, for example, his experiments in grafting the wild olive of the mountains with the domesticated olive of the plain, and his successful cultivation of saffron, under irrigation, in the mountains [...] Ibn al-'Awwam's treatise comprises 34 chapters dealing with all aspects of husbandry - it mentions 585 different plants, explains the cultivation of more than 50 fruit trees, and includes many valuable observations on soils, manures, grafting, and plant diseases (Sarton 1927-48, II, pp. 424-25). Ibn al-'Awwam also includes an agricultural calendar, one of the few Andalusi agronomists to do so. The last section of his work is devoted to animal husbandry, with chapters on cattle, sheep, goats, camels, horses, mules and donkeys, geese, ducks, chickens, pigeons, peacocks and beekeeping. As well as being of great value and interest for the study of agricultural history, the Kitab al-filaha has enabled scholars to reconstruct the original texts of some previous authors whose work has only survived in abridged or fragmented form. In addition, the profusion of references, even though sometimes entangled and difficult to unravel, provides the historian with a wealth of information on the transmission of knowledge" (). - Lacks the second part of vol. 2, not published until 1867; the set thus comprises chapters 1-30 (out of 34). Well preserved. Fück 204. Mennessier de la Lance I, 667. NYPL 184. OCLC 6985613.

[AUTOGRAPH DRAFT REPORT BY UNION OFFICER NATHANIEL C. McCLEAN, DETAILING THE BATTLE OF RESACA, AN EARLY SKIRMISH IN SHERMAN'S ATLANTA CAMPAIGN]

Pettit's Creek, Ga, 1864. [7]pp. with original transmittal envelope. Vertical crease throughout, light toning. Very good. An original draft report of the Battle of Resaca written entirely in the hand of Union officer Nathaniel C. McLean, with emendations in ink and pencil throughout. The Battle of Resaca occurred in northwestern Georgia, May 13-15, 1864, and pitted the forces of generals Sherman and Johnston against each other. After two days of fairly even fighting, Sherman sent a force across the Oostanaula River, forcing Johnston's troops to retreat. Resaca was an early battle in the series of skirmishes known as the Atlanta Campaign. McLean's account begins with noting that he had only recently assumed command of his brigade and details the march toward Resaca and ensuing battle. In part: "When we had approached within very short range with our first line, the enemy opened with artillery throwing his first shot directly into the 25th Mich[igan], killing one man & wounding three others. For a few moments the fire was very hot and I was ordered to halt, which I did getting my men under cover & out of range as rapidly as possible. Subsequently under cover of the woods my line was again advanced to within a very short distance of the rebel works, & my skirmishers were constantly engaged until night terminated the conflict. At about seven o clock the next morning I was ordered to withdraw…We fell back to the gap where we remained until the next day when we marched for Snake Creek Gap which we reached on the 13th and after marching for a considerable distance in line of battle towards Resaca went into camp for the night. On the 14th we again formed with a heavy line of skirmishers in front who were constantly more or less engaged & advanced towards Resaca...." After assessing the land and rebel works in front of him, McLean directs his brigade into formation and is given orders to "advance and storm the rebel works...No information was given me of the strength of the rebel works, or the nature and character of the ground over which the charge was to be made." He continues to describe their charge: "I accordingly ordered an advance, and as well as I was able kept my men in line in passing over the troops of the 14th Corps & through the dense and tangled undergrowth of the forest. We passed over one or two ridges & valleys and at length reached a ridge the top of which was within musket range of the earthwork which covered the hill fortified by the enemy. They here opened fire upon us but my men steadily advanced passing over a fence at the foot of the hill when they came upon a plain exposed to the full fire of the enemy from artillery and muskets. As soon as the cleared ground was reached the whole line started forward with a tremendous shout for the rebel works. Never did men more gallantly breast the storm of death which was hurled upon them from every quarter, and their advance continued until they were broken by a bog and creek into which they plunged more than waist deep. To climb the opposite bank under such murderous fire was more than they could do, especially when we found the works so strong that with the force then attacking them there was not the slightest chance of success. Under the circumstances we were forced back leaving fully one third of the attacking party killed or wounded...." McLean's account continues, then finishes with reporting that all members of his field staff "with the exception of Capt. Stagg had their horses shot under them as was also my own." The draft ends with these lines and is almost identical to the report eventually filed, save the final paragraph added to the final draft. This draft copy was mailed to McLean's wife, and is accompanied by the original transmittal envelope. An insightful account of a notable Union victory that helped Sherman pave a path of destruction towards Atlanta.

ENGAGEMENT OF J. WILKES BOOTH THE EMINENT YOUNG AMERICAN TRAGEDIAN, WHOSE FORMER TRIUMPHS IN BOSTON HAVE BEEN HANDSOMELY ENDORSED BY THE MOST EMPHATIC SUCCESS IN ALL THE PRINCIPAL CITIES OF THE COUNTRY, WILL MAKE HIS FIRST APPEARANCE HERE, THIS SEASON, IN RICHARD III [caption title]

[Boston, 1864. Broadside, 14 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches. One very small patch of dampstaining, several faint marks from formerly glued areas. Near fine. An eerie handbill advertising John Wilkes Booth in the leading role of Shakespeare's "Richard III," to be performed at the Exhibition Hall of the Boston Museum, April 25, 1864, just under a year before he would assassinate Abraham Lincoln. The character of the Duke of Gloucester was in fact one Booth's most well-known and well-regarded parts, and he performed it numerous times across the country to great acclaim, beginning when he first appeared in the title role in Montgomery, Alabama, on Dec. 1, 1860. The role was also one that helped to make both his father Junius and his brother Edwin famous. This handbill advertises what must have been one of Booth's last performances of Richard III, since he did not perform the part again after 1864. The broadside also promotes an orchestral performance and a one-act farce entitled, "Hit Him, He Has No Friends," to precede the main entertainment. A fascinating piece of ephemera publicizing Booth's portrayal of one of Shakespeare's most treacherous characters, who famously declares in his opening soliloquy, "I am determined to prove a villain."

Ancient Syriac documents relative to the earliest establishment of Christianity in Edessa and the neighbouring countries from the year after our Lord's ascension to the beginning of the fourth century. London, Williams and Norgate, 1864.

1864. Folio (232 x 295 mm). (2), XIV, 196, 112 pp. Contemp. blindstamped cloth with giltstamped title to spine. First edition. - In 1837, Cureton (1808-64), assistant keeper of manuscripts in the British Museum and the only oriental scholar in the department, was commissioned to prepare a catalogue of the Arabic manuscripts, the first part of which appeared in 1846. "But a new study had already engaged Cureton's attention. During his official occupation at the British Museum immense additions had been made to the collection of Syriac manuscripts. When he entered the department these numbered about eighty; but the accession of numerous manuscripts of the highest importance from the Nitrian monasteries, which were purchased and brought over partly by the mediation of Dr. Tattam in 1841 and 1843, raised the total to nearly six hundred. Cureton, who knew nothing of Syriac when he came to the department, set himself zealously to work to conquer the not very serious difficulties of the language, and to set in order and classify the new acquisitions from the Nitrian valley. His labours while drawing up an outline catalogue were amply rewarded by the discovery of many manuscripts of the highest interest" (DNB). The present work was published, after his death following a railway accident, by William Wright (1830-89). - Occasional slight foxing; on the whole an excellent, unusually wide-margined copy. From the library of the Ducs de Luynes at the Château de Dampierre: their bookplate reproducing the arms of Charles Marie d'Albert de Luynes (1783-1839), 7th Duc de Luynes, on pastedown. Other discoveries include Purkinje images, reflections of objects from structures of the eye, and the Purkinje shift, the change in the brightness of red and blue colours as light intensity decreases gradually at dusk. Purkyne also introduced the scientific terms "plasma" and "protoplasm". During the last years of his life (from which thre present quotation dates), Purkinje "repeatedly stressed the importance of science and knowledge in practical life. His work [...] was of great importance in the Czech national revival and exerted a lasting effect on the subsequent development of science in his country" (DSB XI, 217).
