Dialogue aux enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu ou la politique de Machiavel aux XIXe siècle par un contemporain.

Bruxelles Mertens 1864. (III) 337 pp. halfleer. *ex libris, papier hier en daar roestvlekkig*'Maurice Joly (1829-1878) was a French satirist and lawyer. He attacks in this book "the political ambitions of Napoleon III. It was first published in Geneva in 1864, and then in Brussels. The piece used the literary device of a dialogue between two diabolical plotters in Hell, the historical characters of Machiavelli and Montesquieu. In this way he tried to cover up a direct, and illegal, attack on Napoleon's rule. The pamphlets were smuggled into France for distribution, but were seized by the police immediately upon crossing the border. The police swiftly tracked down its author, and Joly was arrested and imprisoned for 15 months. The books were banned. (...) One of the few copies (...) found its way to Switzerland, where is was picked up by the Russian police and served as the basis for 'The protocols of the elders of Zion'." Wikipedia.

Holograph Draft of a Dispatch to the War Department

?(Cipher)/ City Point, Va. Dec. 30th 1864/ Hon. E.M. Stanton, Sec. of War./ The accompanying dispatch was received over your signature and answered. Subsequently a dispatch from operator was received stating that it should have been signed G. Wells [sic], Sec. of the Navy. It is all right however for I do not propose to correspond with the Navy Dept about Military operations except through you. My first dispatch gives all that I would advise should be said to the Sec. of the Navy for the present. U.S. Grant/ Lt. Gen. [ink line through each]/ I will say to Mr. Welles that I will advise with you about further operations against Wilmington and he can get his information from you. U.S. Grant/ Lt. Gen.? One page; folded; excellent condition. This piece was reproduced in facsimile at page 188 in Louis A. Coolidge?s The Life of Ulysses S. Grant ( Centenary Edition. Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1922). In the list of illustrations, it is noted that this was then in the possession of the author. Grant made his headquarters at City Point, from where he directed operations against Petersburg and Richmond, as well as commanding other Union armies in the field. Famously informal and modest, the headquarters of the only regularly promoted Lieutenant-General since George Washington was in a log cabin. Nevertheless, this dispatch illustrates how aware Grant was of the prerogatives of his unique rank and that he was not reluctant to assert these when he perceived them as threatened.

The Gettysburg Address, Autograph Leaves of Our Country's Authors

Cushings and Bailey, Baltimore 1864 - First edition of this rare, first publication of the definitive version of the Gettysburg Address. Cushings and Bailey, Baltimore, 1864. Lincoln hand wrote his final version of the Gettysburg Address for Autograph Leaves of Our Country's Authors, a work created by a former Union Army officer to benefit fellow soldiers in the Civil War. Alexander Bliss and John Pendleton Kennedy assembled and published the book in 1864 to raise money for the Baltimore Sanitary Fair. They solicited many prominent Americans, including Lincoln, Herman Melville and Edgar Allen Poe, to provide hand-written copies of one of their works. The book published in 1864 contains reproductions of many fascinating works hand-written by the authors, including a first appearance of a work by Melville and a work by Edgar Allen Poe, as well as the final and definitive version of the Gettysburg Address. There are five copies of the Gettysburg Address in Lincoln’s handwriting. Each is slightly different in its wording and punctuation. The version that was included in Autograph Leaves was his final version, and is considered the definitive text. Lincoln gave the first two drafts of the Gettysburg Address to his two secretaries, John Nicolay and John Hay. It is presumed, but not known whether one of these drafts is the manuscript that Lincoln read from in Gettysburg. Both of these documents are now at the Library of Congress. The other three copies of the Address were written out by Lincoln in February and March of 1864 for charitable causes supporting Union soldiers. Edward Everett requested a copy for the Metropolitan Fair in New York. The Everett Copy is now at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois. Historian George Bancroft made a similar request to benefit the Baltimore Sanitary Fair. His stepson, Alexander Bliss, was collecting manuscripts for a book that was to be sold at the Fair. The Bancroft Copy—the copy at now housed at Cornell University—proved to be unsuitable for use in Autograph Leaves of Our Country’s Authors and Bliss and his colleague, John Pendleton Kennedy, were compelled to write Lincoln to request another copy of the Address for their book. Lincoln complied and wrote the fifth and final copy of his speech—the Bliss Copy—in early March of 1864. It is the only copy of the Gettysburg Address that includes a title—“Address delivered at the dedication of the Cemetery at Gettysburg”—a date, and his full signature. It is now in the Lincoln Bedroom at the White House. It is also the version that is on the wall of the Lincoln Memorial. A very good copy of the book, with a few leaves in the front of the book loose. Book mark attached to the front paste-down. Housed in a custom-made collector’s slipcase. Enoch Arden etc

London - Edward Moxon and Co., 1864. London - Edward Moxon and Co., 1864 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A copy of Tennyson's narrative poem, which is sometimes considered an antithesis to Homer's Odyssey. The hero of the poem, fisherman turned merchant sailor Enoch Arden, leaves his wife Annie and three children to go to sea with his old captain, who offers him work after he had lost his job due to an accident; in a manner that reflects the hero's masculine view of personal toil and hardship to support his family, Enoch Arden left his family to better serve them as a husband and father. However during his voyage, Enoch Arden is shipwrecked on a desert island with two companions; both eventually die, leaving Arden alone there. This part of the story is reminiscent of Robinson Crusoe. Enoch Arden remains lost and missing for ten years. He finds upon his return from the sea that, after his long absence, his wife, who believed him dead, is married happily to another man, his childhood friend Philip (Annie has known both men since her childhood, thus the rivalry), and has a child by him. Enoch's life remains unfulfilled, with one of his children now dead, and his wife and remaining children now being cared for by his onetime rival. Tragically Enoch does not ever reveal to his wife and children that he is really alive, he loves her too much to spoil her new happiness, and Enoch dies of a broken heart. Condition: In a full morocco binding. Externally smart, with just some shelfwear to the spine and corners. Internally, firmly bound. 'Ex-Libris' bookplate to free endpaper. Pages are bright and clean with just the odd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD..

        The Gettysburg Address

Wright & Potter 1864 - Boston. 1864. 88,110pp. plus folding map. Original printed paper wrappers. Internally clean, back cover not attached anymore, water stain at top of spine and around it. Very good. Devoted almost entirely to the Massachusetts war effort, published early in January, 1864. The folding map shows the Soldier's National Cemetery at Gettysburg, dedicated November 19, 1863, with the long speech of Edward Everett of Massachusetts and the short "Dedicatory Speech by President Lincoln," better known as the Gettysburg Address. Also printed is the "Programme of Arrangements" of that day, a list of Massachusetts soldiers killed at Gettysburg and buried there, and details of the cemetery. Monaghan notes this as an early printing of the Gettysburg Address. MONAGHAN, LINCOLN BIBLIOGRAPHY I:48. This historically significant and very early book publication of the Gettysburg Address, which may be the most important, and certainly best known, speech in US history, is extremely uncommon, and almost only found rebound or with the covers missing. This version, intact and in its original condition, is a coveted artifact of Americana. Comes in a custom-made slipcase. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
