Holograph Draft of a Dispatch to the War Department

?(Cipher)/ City Point, Va. Dec. 30th 1864/ Hon. E.M. Stanton, Sec. of War./ The accompanying dispatch was received over your signature and answered. Subsequently a dispatch from operator was received stating that it should have been signed G. Wells [sic], Sec. of the Navy. It is all right however for I do not propose to correspond with the Navy Dept about Military operations except through you. My first dispatch gives all that I would advise should be said to the Sec. of the Navy for the present. U.S. Grant/ Lt. Gen. [ink line through each]/ I will say to Mr. Welles that I will advise with you about further operations against Wilmington and he can get his information from you. U.S. Grant/ Lt. Gen.? One page; folded; excellent condition. This piece was reproduced in facsimile at page 188 in Louis A. Coolidge?s The Life of Ulysses S. Grant ( Centenary Edition. Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1922). In the list of illustrations, it is noted that this was then in the possession of the author. Grant made his headquarters at City Point, from where he directed operations against Petersburg and Richmond, as well as commanding other Union armies in the field. Famously informal and modest, the headquarters of the only regularly promoted Lieutenant-General since George Washington was in a log cabin. Nevertheless, this dispatch illustrates how aware Grant was of the prerogatives of his unique rank and that he was not reluctant to assert these when he perceived them as threatened.

Boise City. July 26, 1864- July 15, 1865.. Boise City. July 26, 1864- July 15, 1865.. Ninety-one issues, 4pp. each. Large folio. First issue chipped with some small loss, worn and lightly soiled. Some light dampstaining and soiling to scattered issues. A few issues with small losses where ads have been cut out. Generally very clean and fresh. Overall, very good. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. An extensive run of the Idaho Tri-Weekly Statesman newspaper, beginning with the very first issue and continuing for most of a complete year. The paper was first published on July 26, 1864 by James S. Reynolds; it began publication from a log cabin on the current site of Boise City Hall. Reynolds owned and operated the paper for its first eight years, selling to Judge Milton Kelly in 1872, who operated the paper until 1887. After that it was sold and changed to a daily. A radical Republican paper, the TRI-WEEKLY STATESMAN records the last days of the Civil War, as well as Indian incursions in the West, the evolving gold-mining story which was rapidly drawing adventurers to Idaho, and other important news items. It was the first newspaper published in Boise and in the territory. A significant run of the paper, which descended in the family of the original proprietor, later sold to the late collector of Idaho material, Lynn Langdon.

        Enoch Arden etc

London - Edward Moxon and Co., 1864. London - Edward Moxon and Co., 1864 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A copy of Tennyson's narrative poem, which is sometimes considered an antithesis to Homer's Odyssey. The hero of the poem, fisherman turned merchant sailor Enoch Arden, leaves his wife Annie and three children to go to sea with his old captain, who offers him work after he had lost his job due to an accident; in a manner that reflects the hero's masculine view of personal toil and hardship to support his family, Enoch Arden left his family to better serve them as a husband and father. However during his voyage, Enoch Arden is shipwrecked on a desert island with two companions; both eventually die, leaving Arden alone there. This part of the story is reminiscent of Robinson Crusoe. Enoch Arden remains lost and missing for ten years. He finds upon his return from the sea that, after his long absence, his wife, who believed him dead, is married happily to another man, his childhood friend Philip (Annie has known both men since her childhood, thus the rivalry), and has a child by him. Enoch's life remains unfulfilled, with one of his children now dead, and his wife and remaining children now being cared for by his onetime rival. Tragically Enoch does not ever reveal to his wife and children that he is really alive, he loves her too much to spoil her new happiness, and Enoch dies of a broken heart. Condition: In a full morocco binding. Externally smart, with just some shelfwear to the spine and corners. Internally, firmly bound. 'Ex-Libris' bookplate to free endpaper. Pages are bright and clean with just the odd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD..

        OUR MUTUAL FRIEND

, 1864. 1864. [a just-about-fine set] With Illustrations by Marcus Stone. [In 20-in-19 monthly serial parts.] London: Chapman and Hall, 1864-1865. Original light blue-green wrappers. First Edition of Dickens's last complete novel, in which Greed and The River Thames are two of the principal characters. OUR MUTUAL FRIEND first appeared in these twenty monthly serial parts (the last one being a double-number) from May 1864 through November 1865; it was then published in two volumes (serial readers were encouraged to have their parts so bound up, with the two volumes' preliminary leaves here provided in Parts X and XIX/XX).~This set has the one issue-point in the first state: the lack of the printer's imprint at the bottom of Part I's front wrapper. As Hatton & Cleaver point out, an absolutely-complete set of OUR MUTUAL FRIEND in parts has the most advertising matter of any Dickens novel -- 320 pages of preliminary ads, plus 89 different ads and slips inserted at the rear. This set is remarkably complete -- lacking only the Albert Insurance slip in Part VI, the often-missing Economic Life Assurance inset both in Part XIV and in Part XIX/XX, and the "At the Bar" slip in Part XVIII (stub remains); on the other hand, there is extra (not-called-for) advertising material in Parts VIII and XVIII -- and the scarce "Foreign Bank Notes" slip is present in the final part.~Condition is overall close to fine, with very little external wear (just a little wear at the foot of about five parts) and with little internal wear other than some spots on the first and last ad leaves of Part I; four of the parts still have unopened leaves, and all plates are clean and bright. OUR MUTUAL FRIEND in parts in not all that scarce, but sets in this condition are: "Dickens in parts" doesn't get much better than this. Hatton & Cleaver pp 343-370. Housed in an attractive cloth clamshell case with leather label.

VESSEL BOOK" of S.W. Carey, of New York, showing his ownership in 54 Sailing Vessels and 21 Floating Grain Elevators, 1855-1890

4to. 263 pp. Half calf over marbled boards, with the spine partially defective. A small label with the manuscript notation “Vessel Book” appears on the front cover. Manuscript entries in sepia and red ink in a fine, bold hand - perhaps Carey’s. Entries are in balance sheet form with debit and. credit entries - usually on facing pages. Carey owned interests in smaller sailing vessels, including clippers (the Western Empire and John Fyfe), a whaler (the Virgin of New Bedford), and a number of large packets (the Isaac Webb, the Yorktown, the Great Western, etc,). Nineteen of Carey’s ships were lost during his ownership and their fates are carefully recorded. The ship Byzantium, for example, was “burned at sea by Pirate Bark Tacony. Capt. Reid June 21st/63.” Or, “Schooner Cordelia, driven ashore and became a total wreck at Vera Cruz.” Or the Octavius, which sailed from New York and was never heard from again. The bark Virginia was “taken by the Rebel Pirate Alabama” etc. From 1864 through 1890 Carey began investing in the floating grain elevators in New York harbor - at greater profit with far less risk. A most unusual manuscript item.

        Auf dem Forum Romanum, 1864

        Apologia Pro Vita Sua

London Longman, Green, Roberts, and Green., 1864. London Longman, Green, Roberts, and Green., 1864. Being a Reply to a Pamphlet entitled "What, then, Does Dr. Newman Mean? Octavo. Original parts in wrappers (223 × 140 mm). In the dark red slipcase, spine lettered in gilt. Wrappers lightly soiled, contents a tad foxed. Slipcase slightly worn at edges. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. A landmark of Victorian literary culture, this is the author's classic defence of his journey from Protestantism to Catholicism, in response to a rather vitriolic remark made by the Anglican priest Reverend Charles Kingsley about the Catholic priesthood.
