        Erinnerung an Theodor Körner

Tracts issued by the Loyal Publication Society, From Feb. 1, 1863, to Feb. 1, 1864. Nos. 1 to 44

Loyal Publication Society of New York, New York 1864 - First collected edition. Octavo. Contains 55 tracts bound in one volume. Lacks three tracts, else complete with additional tracts (nos. 45-50, 52, 54, 56-58, and 60-62) dating from March-September 1864 also bound in. A beautiful copy professionally bound in modern period-style half calf and marbled boards that match the original marbled edges. Small library stamp to the top edge of the title page, else no other markings, with moderate toning to the title and contents pages, very good. The Loyal Publication Society of New York was led by Charles King, president of Columbia University, and the German-American jurist Francis Lieber. A second, sister Society was established in Boston. Both were founded in 1863 after the Union Army had suffered many defeats, in order to bolster public support for the Union effort. They achieved this by disseminating pro-Union tracts and related articles to newspapers around the country, and directly to Union soldiers. The tracts address the economic, social, and political issues of the day, with special attention to slavery and its abolition. Scarce. *OCLC* locates only five copies, and none with the additional tracts bound in this volume. A detailed list is available upon request. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The New York Herald, July 9, 1864: The Naval Battle of Cherbourg

New York: The New York Herald 1864 - Folio size newspaper. 8p. Folded twice. Some toning and tanning. First newspaper to print a full in-depth report and map of the U.S.S Kearsarge's battle and victory over the C.S.S. Alabama near Cherbourg, France. Map has heavy ink from the press, lighter ink on the bottom of the front page. Wear to extremities. Hole present on subtitle between States and Kearsarge and a hole present at mid-section (see picture). Along the long-title before the report, there is a 2 inch long scratch and two very small holes. 1 tear on upper right and 1 tear on center top of map. Along the main fold along the midsection the paper is in delicate condition. The pages 2-3 and 6-7 are uncut, unusual for a paper this old, especially for a paper printed in the Civil War. Pg. 4 relates the news from the Confederate raids into Maryland and Pennsylvania during the March on Washington and just before the Battle of Monocacy. Pg 5 continues the story from page 1 on the battle of Cherbourg. A rare edition of one of the most important naval battles during the Civil War. Please feel free to view our photographs. The Battle of Cherbourg, or sometimes the Battle off Cherbourg or the Sinking of CSS Alabama, was a single-ship action fought during the American Civil War between a United States Navy warship, the USS Kearsarge, and a Confederate States Navy warship, the CSS Alabama, on June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France. The CSS Alabama served as a successful commerce raider, attacking Union merchant and naval ships over the course of her two-year career, during which she never anchored in a Southern port. However, it was a meeting of chance, a meeting 2 years in waiting, when the Kearsarge saw the Alabama in port for some much needed repairs. Both captains, respectful of French neutrality went into international waters and commenced, with the Alabama opening fire first. For many years after the battle, Confederate Captain Semmes stated that he would never have chosen to test USS Kearsarge had he known of her armor-clad protection. CSS Alabama had destroyed or captured dozens of Union merchant vessels during her Atlantic cruises; when word of Alabama's sinking reached the northeastern United States, many Northerners were joyful.         IN THE DISTRICT COURT, FIRST JUDICIAL DISTRICT, STOREY COUNTY, NEVADA TERRITORY. GOULD & CURRY SILVER MINING CO., PLAINTIFF, VS. NORTH POTOSI GOLD AND SILVER MINING CO. DEFENDANT. OPINION OF REFEREE, AUGUST 22, 1864

Virginia, N.T.: Goodman & M'Carty, Printers, 1864.. Virginia, N.T.: Goodman & M'Carty, Printers, 1864.. 12pp., printed in double columns. Original printed wrappers. Vertical fold. Wrappers and upper margin of several leaves with some smoke damage, not affecting text. Good. A scarce, early, and significant Nevada imprint, giving referee John Nugent's decision in this important mining case. Plaintiffs Gould & Curry Silver Mining Company brought an "action of trespass" suit against the North Potosi Gold and Silver Mining Company, arguing that the North Potosi claim, adjacent to its own, was actually a spur of the plaintiff's established vein. After a protracted and costly legal battle the courts appointed Nugent to review the case and prepare an impartial recommendation. His report on the geological characteristics of the Comstock Lode, and subsequent conclusion in favor of the plaintiff, formed the basis for the court's final decision in favor of Gould & Curry. Because of the importance of the case, Nugent's report was printed almost immediately in San Francisco and Virginia City newspapers prior to this first pamphlet publication. Streeter notes that it was "a case of such importance in its day that each side argued, quite improperly as pointed out by the referee, that an adverse decision 'would be seriously detrimental to if not destructive of the prosperity of the District.'" "A fundamental document of Nevada legal lore" - Eberstadt. Not in the American Imprints Inventory for Nevada. ARMSTRONG 203. STREETER SALE 2326. EBERSTADT 165:562.

VESSEL BOOK" of S.W. Carey, of New York, showing his ownership in 54 Sailing Vessels and 21 Floating Grain Elevators, 1855-1890

4to. 263 pp. Half calf over marbled boards, with the spine partially defective. A small label with the manuscript notation “Vessel Book” appears on the front cover. Manuscript entries in sepia and red ink in a fine, bold hand - perhaps Carey’s. Entries are in balance sheet form with debit and. credit entries - usually on facing pages. Carey owned interests in smaller sailing vessels, including clippers (the Western Empire and John Fyfe), a whaler (the Virgin of New Bedford), and a number of large packets (the Isaac Webb, the Yorktown, the Great Western, etc,). Nineteen of Carey’s ships were lost during his ownership and their fates are carefully recorded. The ship Byzantium, for example, was “burned at sea by Pirate Bark Tacony. Capt. Reid June 21st/63.” Or, “Schooner Cordelia, driven ashore and became a total wreck at Vera Cruz.” Or the Octavius, which sailed from New York and was never heard from again. The bark Virginia was “taken by the Rebel Pirate Alabama” etc. From 1864 through 1890 Carey began investing in the floating grain elevators in New York harbor - at greater profit with far less risk. A most unusual manuscript item.

Thirty-six (of fifty-two) lithographed plates (nearly all tinted). Without titlepage. Oblong folio. Contemporary black morocco spine and cloth boards, title stamped in gilt on front cover, spine gilt. Head and foot of spine heavily worn and tearing, hinges and corners lightly worn. Contemporary armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Tissue guards with some foxing, but plates generally quite clean. Good plus. A very rare album of South American scenes, originally drawn by León Pallière and finely printed as lithographic plates in Buenos Aires by J. Pelvilain. The plates include views and portraits of local inhabitants in Argentina (30), Brazil (2), Uruguay (2), and Chile (2). Pallière, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1823 to French parents, travelled to France as a young child and eventually studied art there under F.E. Picot. He continued his artistic training both in South America between 1848 and 1850 and in Europe between 1850 and 1855. He then returned to South America, travelling for the next decade in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Bolivia, and producing the images found in this volume. The views consist primarily of rural scenes, and many of these images portray local inhabitants in a variety of activities. These illustrations and the other images of the native and mestizo population represent a variety of local types and occupations including Indians; rural and urban mestizo laborers; middle and upper class women in a theatre gallery and in church; working men in pulperias; black men and women at a market in Bahia; gauchos; soldiers (apparently rural conscripts); and even a surveyor in the countryside. A number of the lithographs focus on life in the country - on the plains, in camp, and at home. One such image, of a couple standing outside a straw house, includes a ten-line romantic poem by R. Gutierrez. Though a full album is comprised of fifty- two plates and a titlepage, this album does not appear to be missing anything and was likely bound this way originally. A marvellous album, extremely rare, no copies on OCLC. PALAU 211114. BORBA DE MORAES, p.648.

But I still hope to be able to take you up on your kind offer for next year, most likely with a novelette. But I am not promising anything. Please don't be annoyed, but I cannot make promises because commitments pressure me." Nicely signed, "I greet you warmly, Arthur Schnitzler". In a postscript he adds, "...I should not publish any of it, and afterwards in the newspaper it may not be worth it anymore?"
