The New Texas Reader. Designed for the Use of Schools in Texas

Houston: E.H. Cushing, 1864. 8vo., (7 x 4 2/8 inches). One engraved plate of the Star of Texas. Original patterned cloth backed printed paper boards (stained, front cover nearly detached); preserved in a modern brown morocco backed clamshell box. An important and rare Civil War era Texas reader, in the publisher's original binding. Cushing was the editor and publisher of the Houston Telegraph. During the Civil War, when relations were broken off with publishers of the North, and paper was in short supply, Cushing bought and hoarded scrap paper to keep his newspaper presses churning, and during that time also issued 6 juvenile readers for use in Texas schools at a financial loss, to fill the void made by the absence of McGuffey's Readers. One of Cushing's goals was to educate Texas students about Texas matters, and in that spirit the reader contains much Texas specific material, including geography, sociology, and many accounts of the war with Mexico, including the Fall of the Alamo and the battles at Galveston. In the foreword Cushing states, "The 'Texas Reader' is a home production. It is a Southern work, and is called for, not merely from feelings of state pride, but is also demanded by the wants of the country. . . Let us become independent in the means of education, as in everything else. The South has made heroes; let us also make books." Cushing's readers are rare in any condition, particularly given the precarious nature of its manufacture, and the intended audience of the book..

London: John Murray. Bound in original gilt decorated green cloth. 1864. 1st edition. hb. 8vo, pp. xvii, 443. . The subtitle continues: "Being the Account of a Journey from Teheran across the Turkoman Desert on the Eastern Shore of the Caspian to Khiva, Bokhara, and Samarcand performed in the year 1863." Vambery (1832-1913), an inveterate traveller and philologist, was born in Hungary. He travelled to Constantinople, where he taught French in the house of a minister and, in 1858, published a German-Turkish dictionary. In 1862 he began his trek through central Asia, often travelling in disguise (or, as an "Efendi" or "Dervish", as he describes himself in the Preface) in order to enter places forbidden to Westerners, or non-believers. He claimed no geological or astronomical accomplishments, stating that the purpose of his journey was philological; that is, the study of the languages of Central Asia under the conditions, and in the surroundings in which they were actually employed. After publishing this account, he became professor of oriental languages in Budapest, publishing works on Turkish and other Altaic languages, the ethnography of the Turks, the origins of the Magyars, and many other oriental subjects (see Cambridge Bio. Encyc.). This copy contains all plates, and the coloured folding map of Turkestan, which is creased, a few small (repaired) closed tears. Gilt vignette on front board and gilt lettering and design to spine. The original spine has recently been professionally re-backed and the hinges reinforced with japon paper. The boards show wear and soiling, but the contents are very tight and clean. A sturdy copy in good plus, to just less than very good, condition. .

Attorney General James Speed justifies the trial of the Lincoln assassination conspirators by military commission rather than in the civilian courts: "When lawless wretches become so impudent and powerful as not to be controlled and governed by the ordinary tribunals of a country, armies are called out, and the laws of war invoked."

Opinion on the Constitutional Power of the Military to Try and Execute the Assassins of the President, Attorney General James Speed (1864 ?" 1866), Washington: Government Printing Office, 1865, 5.5? x 8.5?, 16 pages in titled paper wraps. Disbound, light uneven toning and marginal wear. An important argument justifying the use of military commission to render justice in times of national emergency, with ramifications to this day. Though a border state moderate from Kentucky, James Speed quickly became a staunch Union man with the outbreak of war. His loyalty was rewarded by Abraham Lincoln, who appointed him Attorney General in 1864. Following Lincoln's assassination in 1865, there was much debate on the appropriate venue in which to try the alleged assassins and plotters. Attorney General Speed argued that the accused conspirators should be tried by military commission, rather than through the civil courts, arguing that the law of war, as part of the law of na

Shakespeare Old English Jest Books, 3 Volume Set

Willis and Sotheran, London 1864 - Three volume set, "Reprints of the Early and Very Rare Jest-Books Supposed To Have Been Used By Shakespeare". Volume I Contains: I. A Hundred Mery Talys; II Mery Tales and Quicke Answers. Volume II comprises: Mery Tales of Skelton; Jests of Scogin; Sackfull of Newes; Tarlton's Jests; Merrie Conceited Jests of George Peele; Jacke of Dover. The third volume contains: Merie Tales of the Mad Men of Gotham; XII Mery Jests of the Wydow Edyth; Pasquils Jests With Mother Bunches Merriments; The Pleasant Conceits of Old Hobson; Certayne Concepts and Feasts; Taylors Wit and Mirth; Conceits, Clinches, Flashes, an Whimsies. All three are edited with introduction and notes by W. Carew Hazlitt, of the Inner Temple, Barrister-At-Law. Published in London in 1864 by Willis and Sotheran. This is truly a beautiful matched set, bound in 3/4 tan leather with mottled paper covered boards, mottled endpapers, and mottled page edges. There is a small book label (A. J. Cox) inside front cover of each, otherwise no marks or writing. Sextodecimo, 4 3/4" X 6 1/2", about 3 3/4" thick for the set. Pagination changes for each section, but there are about 1000 pages more or less. Five raised bands on each spine with gilt decoration and titles. Mottled paper covered boards are in excellent condition with virtually no wear. The leather has a few scuffs and a bit of edgewear with a few darkened spots, but nothing major or glaring. Miniscule cracks are visible along the spine but no splits. A bit of preservative or wax would do the leather good, but I will leave that to the purchaser's discretion. Interior hinges are a bit weak, but solid. Volume III may have had the front hinge repaired at some point in the past as the endpaper is seperated all along the hinge. Top edge mottling is darkened on all three but still visible. All in all a very attractive and solid set of a very desirable title. I have pictures available of each showing faults, feel free to contact me if desired. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Taking the Copper-Heads to Task in 1864: "Another Rebel Raid (on the Ballot Box) repulsed with great slaughter"

1864 - Printed Card. "How are you Copperhead?/ The Peace Democrat for the Salt River" card, adding, "Another Rebel Raid (on the Ballot Box) repulsed with great slaughter, Oct. 11th 1864." 3 1/4 x 3 1/4 in. Nice anti-McLellan piece from the 1864 Presidential campaign, with image of Democratic donkey at center. Salt River was synonymous with political defeat. Believed to originate in backwoods slang, the term was first associated with the 1832 election, when a Jackson supporter is said to have taken Henry Clay along the Salt River instead of the Ohio, causing the candidate to miss an engagement, and ultimately lose the election.         What a Feed I've Had (ink drawing)

      - No Binding. A delightful ink drawing by English illustrator, Phil May (1864 - 1903), who made regular contributions to many periodicals, including the Sydney Bulletin, St. Stephens Review, Daily Graphics, and Punch. He also published his own annuals from 1892 - 1905 and supplemented these with additional larger albums. Examples of his work can be found at the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum. May, a short man of slight build, has drawn himself in a wonderfully comic manner, as is typical of his self-portraits. He depicts himself as being enormously fat and smoking a cigar following a meal. The drawing is inscribed by May and reads: "Menu. Savoy Omlette, Cold Beef (plat de jour), Spring Onions (off), Cabbage (pickled)" and is titled "What a Feed I've Had." It is also signed by the artist, "Fill May." The drawing has been mounted on a piece of archival board and matted. The bottom right corner of the paper is missing; to make this less evident; the board behind the drawing has been watercolored in light blue to match the color of the paper. There are a few light spots of foxing to the paper. Ink drawing measures 7 x 5 inches. The mat measures 19 x 12.5 inches. ART/050609. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Excursion of the Bought Nominations" Showing Balloon "Union League"

1864 - Broadside, "The Excursion of the Bought Nominations, The Large Balloon 'Union League,' Will Start Immediately. The Balloon is managed by the Old Hunkers in the Ring." [1864]. 4 3/4 x 8 1/2 in. Historical BackgroundThe Union League Club formed in New York in 1863 to support Union troops and cultivate civil devotion. Made up of prominent citizens in New York, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, New Haven, and Chicago, the clubs raised money to provide for the U.S. Sanitary Commission and establish a group of political elites to sustain Union military efforts. The league favored a strong central government, tariff protections, and internal improvements. The "Old Hunkers" were the conservative branch of the New York state Democratic party in the mid-nineteenth century. They favored the status quo, whether in business or on the contentious issue of slavery. The more progressive "Barnburner" faction stood in opposition to the old Hunkers, and were against slavery, strong state powers, expanding the public debt, and government subsidizing businesses.Though the Old Hunkers shared many similarities in terms of business philosophy with the Union League-especially that of strong central government power and infrastructure improvements-the disconnect between the two groups' stance on slavery makes this cartoon perplexing. Are the Old Hunkers carefully managing the political situation (the balloon) through the New York political machine (note the capital "R" of Ring, as in the infamous Tweed Ring)? Or are they setting the progressive Union Leaguers adrift?

1864 Philip Sheridan Requests Secret Transfer of Personnel

1864 - Philip Sheridan (1831-1888) was a top Union General during the American Civil War; a career Army man, he also worked through the American Indian Wars on the Great Plains and helped to develop and protect Yellowstone National Park. In this autographed letter signed, dated December 8, 1864, Sheridan requests that 20 men be detached from one unit and reassigned to Assistant Detective Lt. Stephen Draper at the headquarters of the Middle Military Division. Sheridan wanted the transfer to be secret, saying he expected that "no mention will be made of this note or its objects." Written on an 8" x 10" full sheet of lined "Head Quarters Middle Military Division" stationery, folded in half. 3" x 5 1/2" "Headquarters Middle Military Division" transmittal envelope included. Lacks three tracts, else complete with additional tracts (nos. 45-50, 52, 54, 56-58, and 60-62) dating from March-September 1864 also bound in. A beautiful copy professionally bound in modern period-style half calf and marbled boards that match the original marbled edges. Small library stamp to the top edge of the title page, else no other markings, with moderate toning to the title and contents pages, very good. The Loyal Publication Society of New York was led by Charles King, president of Columbia University, and the German-American jurist Francis Lieber. A second, sister Society was established in Boston. Both were founded in 1863 after the Union Army had suffered many defeats, in order to bolster public support for the Union effort. They achieved this by disseminating pro-Union tracts and related articles to newspapers around the country, and directly to Union soldiers. The tracts address the economic, social, and political issues of the day, with special attention to slavery and its abolition. Scarce. OCLC locates only five copies, and none with the additional tracts bound in this volume. A detailed list is available upon request. .
