Dr. HERMANN KLENCKE - DIE BAULEUTE VON KÖLN (Originalausgabe 1863) Die Bauleute zu Köln oder Deutsche Kunst und Zunft. Roman.

JOSEPH MERRIN
Butterflying With the Poets; a Picture of the Poetical Aspect of Butterfly Life with Nature-Printed Illustrations. Gloucester: Published by the Author, 1863. 1st Edition. 8vo. pp. xv, 126; 30 nature printed butterfly specimens inset into 15 card mounts. Original full red morocco, gilt, heavily restored with new spine, many page edges professionally repaired. Privately printed by the author in Gloucester in 1863, it is believed that perhaps no more than five copies of this edition were printed; it was commercially re-issued the following year by Longmans. Henry Bradbury was the leading proponent of nature printing, printing two books on seaweeds and ferns in the 1850s using the process. This form of nature printing involved passing the plant between a steel plate and a lead plate, through two rollers closely screwed together. The plant embeds into the lead plate upon which coloured ink or inks are applied and from this copies can be produced. The term nature printing as used for this book refers to a different process used specifically for making impressions of butterfly wings involving sandwiching butterfly wings between two pieces of paper, and, by exerting pressure through a press, producing the coloured image of the wings. The difficulties in terms of specimens available, time, and expense means that editions are very small. Copac lists only two copies of this edition held at the British Library and the Bodliean; the 2nd edition is held by Cambridge and the National Library of Scotland.

William Stephens
Camp Sibley (Henderson) and Fairmount, Minnesota, 1863. Unbound. Very good. Stephens' first letter-on campaign stationery featuring John Fremont-was written from Camp Sible, Lower Sioux Agency. Its patriotic envelope-featuring the popular song, The Girl I Left Behind Me-was postmarked at Henderson, Minnesota on November 5, [1862]. The letter is in nice shape with repairs at some folds; a postage stamp has been removed from the envelope. The second letter, without envelope, was written on patriotic stationery featuring Columbia holding a flag, was sent from Henderson, Minnesota on January 4th, 1863. It is in nice shape.Stephens, apparently a recent Minnesota settler, first reports to his niece in Pennsylvania:"The Indian troubles are over for this time. I enlisted the 13th of August and should have been south long before this if it had not been for this outbreak. I could not begin to tell you of the depredations they have committed here; the most horrible sights I ever saw.....when I get into winter quarters I will write you again it may be south; a soldier is not presumed to know what he is going to do. . . ."And later remarks:"Olive did you have a good Christmas and New Year? I never shall forget mine: Christmas. I went to Mankato to see the Indians hung. I sent Eliza a paper that gave all the particulars. . . . I don't believe the Seventh Regiment will go south. They say we have got to follow the Indians to the Rocky Mountains next summer. . . .". Moliere
France: 1863. Binding back on vol IV is coming off. bends to front cover, spine broken, foxing, spotting, overall wear and discoloration to pages. NICE Antique 2 Vol Set of Oeuvres De Moliere Tome IV & V in French 1863 This is a great 2 volume set of antique French books by Moliere. I have a brief synopsis of him below. These antique books are in fair condition as seen in the pictures provided for your review. They came from the personal library of Henry Cabot Lodge who was a United States Senator for Massachusetts in 1893. He was an active politician for many years. He had a PHD in History from Harvard University. Molière may be said to have created modern French comedy by giving it a serious basis, where there had previously been little but farces and comedies of intrigue... His genius lay in his ability to combine profound observation of human nature in its complexity and in its foibles with the power of presenting these in their amusing aspect. A F.R.G.S. [Burton, Richard Francis]
Tinsley Brothers, 1863. Wanderings in West Africa from Liverpool to Fernando Po Author: A F.R.G.S. [Burton, Richard Francis] Published: London; Tinsley Brothers, 1863 Binding: Hardcover Condition: Very good (please see full item description for details) Description: Two volumes in the rarest binding state (without Burton's name or FRGS on the spines), but with a "second edition" slug on the title pages. This state was apparently unknown to Penzer and was probably the result of an attempt to boost sales by the publisher, as the text is unchanged. Plate of Julu house is the frontispiece to Volume I, and the map (now detached and laid in) is in Volume II. . Both volumes lightly bumped/rubbed, but clean and sound. Small bookplate of F.H. Spencer on each front pastedown. Much to his dismay, Burton's first consular posting landed him on a small, desolate island off the coast of West Africa. He took every opportunity to leave the place, exploring various parts of the mainland and making observations on cultural and traditions, health and sanitary conditions, and slavery, among other things. The account of his journeys into Sierra Leone and Nigeria to investigate stories of gold and gold mining is credited with drawing public attention to mining prospects in the region. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1863. First edition, first issue with "about" repeated on page 314, line 6. 337p, 10p ads. Publisher's embossed brown cloth with gilt spine titles. Small fray to crown and outer corners, a nice copy, tight and rather bright. Item #20789 "She had a profound antipathy for slavery before the visit, but her first-hand experiences with the 'peculiar institution' intensified her prejudice, a prejudice which was further complicated by growing difficulties with her slave owning husband. The actress, however, possessed an intense curiosity about the subject, and she kept a day by day account of what she saw of the Negroes in Georgia. Her Journal of a Residence... was put in the form of letters addressed to a New England friend, Elizabeth Dwight Sedgwick, but it was not published until the middle of the Civil War. It was then printed, according to Kemble, to counteract the pro-Southern sentiments of the English aristocracy. This book portrays the mistreatment of the unfortunate blacks and describes in minute detail the clothing, medical care, illiteracy, diseases, food, religious life, and difficulties of the slaves, especially those of the Negro women."
