Prijs: Euro 3.450,- (incl. lijst).

Rev. C.H. Wiley
Sterling, Campbell & Albright. Greensboro, NC. 1863. 212 pp. Softcover in original faded wraps. Bindings are rubbed and scuffed from handling. There is a diagonal crease on the front cover near the spine. Paper on spine has mostly perished. Prior owner wrote in pencil "M. A. Bernhardt Book" on contents page. A similar notation inside rear cover. Text is lightly foxed, has some dampstaining on fore-edge of some pages. Some pages are dog-eared. Parrish & Willingham 6074. A scrap of newspaper was used as a bookmark. Based on the wording of the text, the newspaper was published during the War. Part of the text reads as follows: "...When the South is safely anchored in an English harbour and a French port, where are you, you miserable sinner before God? May God have mercy on your soul! Amen." - Leonidas Polk Its entirely possible that this could be the same Leonidas Polk who was second cousin to President James K. Polk, and served in the War as a Confederate General. Another interesting piece of text reads: "A Suggestion: This war will have failed in one of its most important uses, truly remarks the Eufaula Spirit of the South, if it do not teach the South a lesson of undying hate [...] United States Government..." A SCARCE Confederate Imprint! Not Ex-Lib. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.

[BURTON, Sir Richard Francis].
burton in the original cloth.[BURTON, Sir Richard Francis]. Wanderings in West Africa from Liverpool to Fernando Po. By a F.R.G.S. London, Tinsley Brothers, 18, Catherine St., Strand, 1863.8vo. 2 vols. Original blind-stamped maroon cloth, lettered in gilt to spine; pp. viii, [2], 303; [vi], 295; folding map frontispiece to vol. I, wood-engraved frontispiece of "The Juju, or Sacrifice House, Grand Bonny River" to vol. II; very minor rubbing to extremities, throughly nice and clean copy; provenance: both front paste-downs with engraved armorial bookplates of Edward Joseph Dent, both volumes with that of Norman Douglas Simpson on opposite fly-leaves.First edition, the issue with Burton's name in gilt to the spines. Financial difficulties following his marriage to Isabel in 1861 led Burton to apply for and accept a minor consulship on the Spanish island of Fernando Po (Bioko, off Cameroon in West Africa). Wanderings in West Africa tells the story of Burton's voyage out to his new posting, with visits en route to Madeira, Tenerife, Freetown (Sierra Leone), Lagos, and elsewhere. Burton wished that his name be suppressed from the work: the attribution "By a F.R.G.S." hints at the controversy then raging between the author and the heads of the R.G.S. concerning the sources of the Nile. His consulship in Fernando Po proved of little interest as such to Burton, save in so far as it allowed him to travel in West Africa (see his Mission to Gelele and Abeokuta).Provenance: From the book collection, which was rather strong on Africa, of the eminent British botanist Norman Douglas Simpson … [Click Below for Full Description]

Northfield, Minnesota, 1863. NA. Very Good. 8vo. 13 pages with content. Most interesting is the naive folk art drawing on the front cover, done by an Emily Shanfry (?), who we would surmise was the compiler of the hair album. The colored pencil drawing shows a young woman holding a bouquet and in a wide bustle dress of the era. The drawing is cut out precisely along the outline of the figure and mounted. There are 24 locks of hair within, all captioned with the names of the source. These are sometimes tightly braided, and sometimes looped around two or three times, with ribbon ties in all cases. The samples are generally quite neat, and the ribbons, remarkably well-preserved for this sort of thing. Only one lock is missing. The album appears to have been made at one time, as opposed to over the course of many years, and from Minnesota about five years after it became a state. Northfield was known as a "New England colony" since it was originally settled by New Englanders mainly. The ruled paper upon which everything is mounted is quite soiled and messy, but the samples themselves, as we have indicated, remain neat.

Lord Macaulay 8 Leather bound Volume Set 1863
1863. Good Condition - please refer to photographs. The History Of England by Lord Macaulay 8 Leather bound Volume Set 1863 The earliest known set A leather bound eight volume set in very good condition. The History of England by Lord Macaulay. Published in London by Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts & Green. Printed by Spottiswoode and Co, London. Complete in eight volumes. With numerous illustrations. Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay, PC (25 October 1800 28 December 1859) was a British historian and Whig politician. He wrote extensively as an essayist and reviewer; his books on British history were hailed as literary masterpieces. Macaulay held political office as the Secretary at War between 1839 and 1841 and the Paymaster-General between 1846 and 1848. He played a major role in introducing English and western concepts to education in India. He supported the replacement of Persian by English as the official language, the use of English as the medium of instruction in all schools, and the training of English-speaking Indians as teachers. In his view, Macaulay divided the world into civilised nations and barbarism, with Britain representing the high point of civilisation. He was wedded to the Idea of Progress, especially in terms of the liberal freedoms. He opposed radicalism while idealising historic British culture and traditions. During the 1840s, Macaulay began work on his most famous work, The History of England from the Accession of James the Second, publishing the first two volumes in 1848. At first, he had planned to bring his history down to the reign … [Click Below for Full Description]

the General Assembly of Florida Books
The Acts and Resolutions Adopted by the General Assembly of Florida 1863-1865 Up for sale is a fantastic set of early Florida law books. This 4 book set includes 1863 - 1865. It is incredibly rare to find a sequential set of these early books for sale. These books cover the southern state of Floridas confederate years during the Civil War. The 1862 edition is 79 pages long plus the Index, 1863 is 60 pages plus Index, 1864 is 46 pages plus index, and 1865 is 146plus the Index to the Acts and Resolutions and the Index to the Constitution. Some acts include: An Act to authorize the removal of slaves and other property from the State An Act to suspend the collection of Taxes in counties held or controlled by the Enemy An Act to regulate Trade and Intercourse with the Indians An Act to aid the Confederate Government in the detection of Frauds An Act to provide clothing for troops from Florida in the service of the Confederate States An Act to create special tribunals for the trial of Capital Offences committed by Slaves, Free Negroes, and Mulattoes Article XVI Whereas, slavery has been destroyed in this State by the Government of the United States... These books are in nice condition. The only damage that I see is a small tear on page 75 of the 1862 edition, the first page of the 1865 edition which is pictured.
