William Charles Baldwin, Esq , F R G S
A very rare 1863 first edition, first printing, signified by the lack of the words "and Adventure" following "African Hunting" on the title-page. The second edition, and subsequent editions, include "and Adventure" on the title-page. The folding map is present and in great condition, and is marked "London:Richard Bentley,1862." The illustrations that are called-for on the List of Illustrations are all present except for one (page 39). The First Edition also included 6 color lithographs that are NOT called-for on the List of Illustrations, or anywhere else in the book that I can determine. This copy has all 6 of these color illustrations, though some of them have been cut from the original plate and mounted on a new page when this book was rebound. This book has been rebound in the original boards, for the stamped relief of the original illustration to the front board can be faintly seen if held to the light. The board's original stamped illustration was "Narrow Escape," one of the color illustrations present in this copy. The Index is present. The original publisher adverts are not at the end of this book.

[BURTON, Sir Richard Francis].
burton in the original cloth.[BURTON, Sir Richard Francis]. Wanderings in West Africa from Liverpool to Fernando Po. By a F.R.G.S. London, Tinsley Brothers, 18, Catherine St., Strand, 1863.8vo. 2 vols. Original blind-stamped maroon cloth, lettered in gilt to spine; pp. viii, [2], 303; [vi], 295; folding map frontispiece to vol. I, wood-engraved frontispiece of "The Juju, or Sacrifice House, Grand Bonny River" to vol. II; very minor rubbing to extremities, throughly nice and clean copy; provenance: both front paste-downs with engraved armorial bookplates of Edward Joseph Dent, both volumes with that of Norman Douglas Simpson on opposite fly-leaves.First edition, the issue with Burton's name in gilt to the spines. Financial difficulties following his marriage to Isabel in 1861 led Burton to apply for and accept a minor consulship on the Spanish island of Fernando Po (Bioko, off Cameroon in West Africa). Wanderings in West Africa tells the story of Burton's voyage out to his new posting, with visits en route to Madeira, Tenerife, Freetown (Sierra Leone), Lagos, and elsewhere. Burton wished that his name be suppressed from the work: the attribution "By a F.R.G.S." hints at the controversy then raging between the author and the heads of the R.G.S. concerning the sources of the Nile. His consulship in Fernando Po proved of little interest as such to Burton, save in so far as it allowed him to travel in West Africa (see his Mission to Gelele and Abeokuta).Provenance: From the book collection, which was rather strong on Africa, of the eminent British botanist Norman Douglas Simpson … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEWIS, Sir George Cornewall.
London: Parker Son and Bourn, 1863. London: Parker Son and Bourn,, 1863. Octavo (185 x 116 mm). Contemporary half calf, lettering to spine in gilt, spine gilt tooled on the raised bands and at head and tail, black calf label, marbled sides, edges & endpapers. Binding lightly rubbed. An excellent copy. First edition of "this provocative little book" (E. D. Steele, Palmerston and Liberalism, 1855-1865, CUP 1991, p. 373) - the final work of the prominent Liberal politician and author Sir George Cornewall Lewis (1806-1863); editions appeared in French, as Quelle est la meilleure forme de gouvernement? (Paris, 1867), and Italian, as Qual' è la migliore forma di governo? in a translation by the political economist Luigi Luzzatti (Padua, 1868). A Dialogue takes the form of a debate among Democritus, Aristocraticus, and Monarchicus, with Lewis, in the guise of Crito, concluding with the opinion that "it is the part of wisdom and prudence to acquiesce in any form of government, which is tolerably well administered, and affords tolerable security to person and property". The book's "academic guise permitted Lewis to enunciate political truths which were not for open discussion by a cabinet minister [he served successively as home and war secretary under Palmerston]. The imaginary debate took place between contemporary Englishmen. The participant expounding Lewis's own views held that the monarchy was politically dead, though still socially important" (ibid. p. 224).

ALBERT EDWARD, PRINCE OF WALES.
Printed by Harrison and Sons St. Martin's Lane London. Folio, 1863. pp. 18. Plan of the Choir of St. George's Chapel, Windsor. Contemporary red straight-grained morocco by HATCHARDS, titled in gilt on the front cover with the gilt initials of Albert Edward below the device of the three feathers, all edges gilt, an excellent copy. *The first page of text is titled DRAFT - the following text is printed in single column towards the outer margin, surmounted by a crown, and lists the process of the ceremonial and the order of precedence of the participants. This appears to be an advance copy for a member of the royal household. COPAC records a copy with an almost identical title, Manchester University only. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
