Lincoln, Abraham
June 8, 1863. Military commission boldly signed by Abraham Lincoln as President August 7, 1861, and countersigned by Simon Cameron as Secretary of War, appointing John W. Taylor as Assistant Quartermaster with the rank of Captain, orange Seal at top left, registration docket signed by Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas Double matted and framed, the entire piece measures 25.8 inches by 21.5 inches. In near fine condition. Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He led the United States through its Civil War, and in doing so preserved the Union of the United States of America, abolished slavery, and strengthened the federal government. Lincoln began constructing his cabinet on election night and sought to create a cabinet that would unite the Republican party. His eventual cabinet would include his primary rivals for the Republican nomination and although his appointees held differing views on economic issues all were opposed to the expansion of slavery into the territories of the United States. The most senior cabinet post of Secretary of State was appointed to William Seward who had recently failed to win the 1860 Republican presidential nomination and Lincoln's choice for Secretary of the Treasury was Ohio Senator Salmon P. Chase, Seward's primary political rival and the leader of a radical faction of the Republican party that sought the immediate abolition of slavery. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

the General Assembly of Florida Books
The Acts and Resolutions Adopted by the General Assembly of Florida 1863-1865 Up for sale is a fantastic set of early Florida law books. This 4 book set includes 1863 - 1865. It is incredibly rare to find a sequential set of these early books for sale. These books cover the southern state of Floridas confederate years during the Civil War. The 1862 edition is 79 pages long plus the Index, 1863 is 60 pages plus Index, 1864 is 46 pages plus index, and 1865 is 146plus the Index to the Acts and Resolutions and the Index to the Constitution. Some acts include: An Act to authorize the removal of slaves and other property from the State An Act to suspend the collection of Taxes in counties held or controlled by the Enemy An Act to regulate Trade and Intercourse with the Indians An Act to aid the Confederate Government in the detection of Frauds An Act to provide clothing for troops from Florida in the service of the Confederate States An Act to create special tribunals for the trial of Capital Offences committed by Slaves, Free Negroes, and Mulattoes Article XVI Whereas, slavery has been destroyed in this State by the Government of the United States... These books are in nice condition. The only damage that I see is a small tear on page 75 of the 1862 edition, the first page of the 1865 edition which is pictured. These books have a contemporary library binding and a few rubber stamps. [Attributes: First Edition]

ABRAHAM LINCOLN. GETTYSBURG ADDRESS
New York, 1863. No binding. Fine. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. Newspaper, Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, New York, December 5, 1863. 16 pp., complete. ""and that Government of the people, for the people, and for all people, shall not perish from earth.""As printing technology advanced through the middle decades of the nineteenth century, illustrated newspapers grew in popularity even though their engravings added a few weeks to press time. Leslie's printing-from December 5-includes an article containing the full text of Lincoln's timeless speech (page 11). Illustrations include a centerfold spread with the formal dedication ceremony prominently placed, and smaller views of Union and rebel graves, defensive works, Meade's headquarters, and a view of the town (centerfold). A large illustration of ""The War in Tennessee-Lookout Mountain and Its Vicinity"" appears on the front page. There is no definitive text that captures exactly how Lincoln spoke that day, though the AP reporter's text is most familiar. Leslie's printing, following the Philadelphia Enquirer version, contains variations, most notably in the final two sentences regarding the nation's unfinished work and closing phrase of ""Government of the people, for the people, and for all people"" rather than ""of the people, by the people, and for the people."" Excerpt""Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth upon this Continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing the question w … [Click Below for Full Description]

FLAUBERT (Gustave)
RENAN, ERNEST. - [PMM 352 - THE HISTORICAL CHRIST]
Paris, Michel Lévy Frères, 1863. Bound totally uncut w. the orig. wrappers, also the back, in a near cont. green marbled cardboardbdg. w. red gilt title- and tome-labels to back. Capitals w. traces of use and back a bit faded, but otherwise nice and solid. Wrappers lightly soiled. Woodcut portrait of Renan inserted as frontispiece (not called for). W. half-title ("Histoire des Origines du Christianisme. Livre premier"). A very nice and clean copy, -only a couple of leaves w. very minor brownspotting. (4), LIX, 462 pp. + (1) leaf (colophon). True first edition of this seminal classic on the life of Jesus, which caused an immediate scandal when it appeared. Rare with the original wrappers. Renan's masterpiece, which constitutes the first attempt to write a biography of Jesus the man and strongly puts forth the notion that the Bible too can be subject to historical investigation and critical scrutiny. The work enraged the Roman Catholic Church but was an immediate success in most of Europe. "In six months sixty thousand copies of the French edition had been sold and edition succeeded edition. Renan regarded the book as the first of a series on the "Origins of Christianity", which he continued with "The Apostles" (1866), "Saint Paul" (1869), "The Anti-Christ" (1873), "The Gospels" (1877), "The Christian Church" (1879) and "Marcus Aurelius" (1881) but none of these emulated the success of the "Life of Jesus". Immediate success was partly a "succès de scandale" but this would not have kept the book alive. It is Renan's approach to the subject and his beautiful prose that gave it … [Click Below for Full Description]

[GETTYSBURG], CHARLES MAGNUS
1863. No Binding. Condition: Fine. "Battle of Gettysburg, Pa., July 3rd 1863. The Third Day," color print. New York: Charles Magnus, 1863. 23 x 17 1/2 in. Historical Background: The Battle of Gettysburg, fought from July 1-3, 1863, was the largest land battle ever fought in North America. With over 157,000 soldiers engaged and more than 51,000 casualties, it was the costliest battle of the Civil War. After two days of fierce fighting, the Union army formed a fishhook defensive line along Cemetery Ridge and Cemetery Hill south of the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Having earlier attacked both ends of the Union line, Confederate General Robert E. Lee determined to attack the center of the Union line where he thought it weak along Cemetery Ridge. At 1 p.m., more than 150 Confederate cannon began the largest artillery bombardment of the war, which lasted for two hours but made little impact on the Union position. At 3 p.m., more than 12,000 Confederate soldiers advanced three-quarters of a mile across open ground toward the Union center. Nearly half of the attackers did not return to their own lines. Pickett's Charge became the "high-water mark of the Confederacy," as the Confederacy never came as close again to achieving independence through military victory. The perspective of this print is from behind the Union lines showing advancing Confederates in the distance. In the center, a Union officer, perhaps General George G. Meade, dispatches a messenger with orders, while a Union gun crew fires on distant Confederates. Dead and dying men and horses also … [Click Below for Full Description]

A F.R.G.S. [Burton, Richard Francis]
Wanderings in West Africa from Liverpool to Fernando Po Author: A F.R.G.S. [Burton, Richard Francis] Published: London; Tinsley Brothers, 1863 Binding: Hardcover Condition: Very good (please see full item description for details) Description: Two volumes in the rarest binding state (without Burton's name or FRGS on the spines), but with a "second edition" slug on the title pages. This state was apparently unknown to Penzer and was probably the result of an attempt to boost sales by the publisher, as the text is unchanged. Plate of Julu house is the frontispiece to Volume I, and the map (now detached and laid in) is in Volume II. . Both volumes lightly bumped/rubbed, but clean and sound. Small bookplate of F.H. Spencer on each front pastedown. Much to his dismay, Burton's first consular posting landed him on a small, desolate island off the coast of West Africa. He took every opportunity to leave the place, exploring various parts of the mainland and making observations on cultural and traditions, health and sanitary conditions, and slavery, among other things. The account of his journeys into Sierra Leone and Nigeria to investigate stories of gold and gold mining is credited with drawing public attention to mining prospects in the region. Penzer 71-72; Casada 70. Please email us for additional details about any item and we will respond promptly. Shipping: For orders of more than one book, we will combine shipping whenever possible. Priority and International shipping are available. Please contact us for a quote. Condition Descriptions Defined: We grade our books and dust ja … [Click Below for Full Description]

GOULD, John (1804-1881)
London: Taylor and Francis for the Author, 1863. 3 volumes, large folio. (21 1/4 x 14 1/2 inches). 182 hand-colored lithographic plates, most heightened with gum-arabic, by Gould and Henry Constantine Richter, printed by Hullmandel & Walton. Contemporary full green morocco, covers with wide gilt border, spine with raised bands in six compartments, lettered in the second and fourth, the others with a repeat overall decoration in gilt, yellow endpapers, gilt edges A lovely set of the first edition of Gould's famous work on the mammals of Australia. John Gould's three-volume folio work on the Australian mammals is one of his finest works and perhaps the most engaging of all colourplate Australian natural history books. "It was not until I arrived in [Australia]," he writes in the Preface, " and found myself surrounded by objects as strange as if I had been transported to another planet, that I conceived the idea of devoting a portion of my attention to the mammalian class of its extraordinary fauna." The publication of this magnificent book, with some of the finest depictions of mammals ever produced, for the first time gave the world accurate descriptions and illustrations of Australia's extraordinary mammals. In many instances he was the first to record Australian mammals, some now extinct. As Sauer has pointed out, Gould was prophetic on this eventuality, and Gould's comments on the Tasmanian Tiger, Thylacinus cynocephalus, are poignant: "When the comparatively small island of Tasmania becomes more densely populated, and its primitive forests intersected with … [Click Below for Full Description]

Latest reports on the Swiss agriculture colonies in Uruguay undertaken by Wilhelm Fender in Basel with the participation of several Swiss merchants, engineers and others established in Uruguay. Like many others in Europe, America was a chance for progress and prosperity. Many came to North America during the Gold Rush, but once the Civil War started in the United States the Swiss emigrants started looking further south in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay for a better future. In Brazil there was a law that foreigners could not own land. In Argentina the colony settled in Indian territory and were not welcome, but Uruguay welcomed immigrants with open arms. They were desperate to populate the country, which had but a few inhabitants at the time. The Swiss Colony was given autonomy, and the first democratic secret vote in Uruguay happened en "Colonia Suiza". The Swiss immigrants helped shape many Uruguayan laws, giving Uruguay the name of "Switzerland of the Americas" among many other things, like the classical production of Swiss cheese, also known as "Queso Colonia" 1863 Ackerbau-Colonien in Uruguay Nueva Helvecia Swiss Colony in Uruguay Reports Description: Up For Sale Today is Neueste Berichte uber die schweizerischen Ackerbau-Colonien in Uruguay … [Click Below for Full Description]

Comprehensive Arabic-English dictionary that was never surpassed, comprising a very large collection of words and significations omitted in the Kámoos, with supplements to its abridged and defective explanations, ample grammatical and critical comments, and examples in prose and verse: composed by means of the munificence of the most noble Algernon, Duke of Northumberland, K.G., etc., etc., etc., and the bounty of the British Government."The object proposed was not to do in English little more than what Golius and others had already done in Latin, by translating and composing from a few Arabic lexicons of the class of epitomes or abstracts or manuals; but to draw chiefly from the most copious Eastern sources; one of which, comprising in about one seventh part of its contents the whole of the celebrated Kámoos, I knew to exist in Cairo.
