COURNOT, Antoine Augustin.
Paris: L. Hachette et Cie, 1863. Octavo. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, marbled edges, recently very skilfully rebacked and recornered, spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece, gilt, spine dated at the foot. A fine copy. With the bookplate of John Neville Keynes, Cambridge logician and economist, and the father of John Maynard Keynes. First edition. Cournot was the first "to visualize the general interdependence of all economic quantities and the necessity of representing this cosmos by a system of equations" (Schumpeter, p. 467). In 1838 he published Recherches sur les Principes Mathématiques de la Théorie des Richesses. Perhaps because he was primarily a mathematician and his work contained technicalities to which economists had previously been unaccustomed, it went almost unnoticed until its significance was recognized by Marshall, Walras and Jevons. The present work states his theory without the mathematics and develops it into a systematic doctrine. Because in the Recherches he "treated only questions where mathematical analysis was applicable. the product was not a complete treatise on political economy but a selection of contributions to various specific topics" (Theocharis, Early Developments in Mathematical Economics, p. 200). In the Principes the results are united. Cossa 276 (131); Einaudi 1364; Mattioli 794; Menger, col. 568. [Attributes: First Edition]

Abolition and Activism]
Boston, Prentiss & Deland, 1863. First Edition. Original printed wrappers with light spot to front cover and some chipping and bumping to corners and spine; text block separated from wraps but block itself is holding strong. Internally a clean, complete copy of this important activist work reporting on the educational systems being built for the benefit of freedmen in South Carolina, one of the first regions liberated by the Union forces. Last appearing at auction in 1904, this report is scarce both in the trade and at institutions. A commission overseen by women and men with a belief in the importance of educating former slaves both in liberal and practical fields that were previously inaccessible. In its history of the organization and its Port Royal Experiment, the pamphlet explains that the goal in "teaching the rudiments of education ..and organizing industry" was to develop "a self-sustaining and industrious community" of freedmen farming plantation land abandoned by white southerners during Reconstruction. Within the slim pamphlet are the commission's Constitution as well as its officers and committees, which oversaw the hiring and compensation of teachers, development of curricula, and even critical physical needs such as the supplying of clothing. Reports on progress and budgetary usage are also included for each committee. According to this first report, "about three thousand children" had been enrolled in schools and "about two thousand acres were purchased by the freedmen themselves." An important document that acknowledges the deep and long-term disadvantages a … [Click Below for Full Description]

William SHAKESPEARE
Cambridge and London: Macmillan and Co., 1863-1866. A Finely Bound Set of Shakespeare SHAKESPEARE, William. William Aldis WRIGHT (editor). The Cambridge Shakespeare published in nine volumes. This is the First Edition of the set which went on to be published many times. Vol.1 edited by William George Clark and John Glover; vols 2-9 edited by William George Clark and William Aldis Wright. Nine octavo volumes (approximately 9 x 6 inches; 225 x 155 mm external dimensions). Handsomely bound by W Pratt of London (stamp to the reverse of the front free end paper) full polished calf ruled in gilt, with red and green title labels, decorated in gilt, with inner gilt dentelles and gilt edges to the boards. Spines panelled and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. A fine set. William Aldis Wright (1831 - 1914), was an English writer and editor. The Works of William Shakespeare (1863-6), edited by William George Clark, with at first John Glover and later William Aldis Wright as collaborators, was published in nine volumes by Macmillan, but printed at the University Press, so that it became known as the Cambridge Shakespeare. This important edition was based on a thorough collation of the four Folios and of all the Quarto editions of the separate plays, and of subsequent editions and commentaries (preface), so that in textual matters it constitutes a virtual variorum. Prefaces provide accounts of the early textual history of each of the works, and the volumes include the texts of first quartos of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet, as well as the quartos relating to Henry V, The … [Click Below for Full Description]

Runge, H.
Gustave George Lange. This is an 1863 (three volume) edition of "La Suisse". There are about 200 engraved boards, including a frontispiece with each volume. Most of the engravings are covered with a protective sheet of tissue. These copies are bound in red buckram boards. They have faux leather spines with raised bands and gold lettering. The end-papers are decorated with a marbled design, and the books' edges have a lightly mottled pattern. Condition: all volumes are in roughly the same condition. They all have some mild to moderate marking and shelf-wear on the covers and spine. Volumes 2 and 3 also have prominent tears on the bottom left-hand side of their front covers. Additionally, volume 1 has a previous owner's signature in pen on the ffep; it also has some notes in pencil on the title page. The edges of all three volumes have some mild shelf-wear. There is some mild staining, foxing, and marking throughout the interior pages of each volume. However, the interior pages are generally in good condition, and the bindings are all strong. These books have possibly been re-bound, but if they have, it has been done to a very high standard. Location: HD_101135379 F14 NB because of the large size and high price of this book there will be an extra postage charge. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

TOYNBEE Captain Henry.
[1863]. Small 4to, stab sewn (as issued), drop head title. Three small worm holes to margin of final leaf. Lightly toned, otherwise very good. Ink presentation inscription: ?Woodfield Eagles Esq / Ship Hotspur Christmas 1863 / with kindest regards from Hy Toynbee? 28pp. [Calcutta], Saunders, Cones and Co, No 23, Loll Bazar, A seemingly unrecorded report of a public meeting of merchants, officers and commanders of ships, held in Calcutta to discuss the welfare (mostly moral) of sailors in the Indian port. Captain of the ship Hotspur, Toynbee's address outlines ?The improvements proposed for sailors in Calcutta and elsewhere; and on the branches of study to be pursued by young officers.? His plan has several prongs - first and foremost he is advocating for a Sailor's Institute to be established and built in the vicinity of the port of Calcutta, but still far enough from ?that quarter of town known as Flag Street? to keep the sailors out of trouble. The nature of this trouble is described in florid terms: ?the most degenerate class of woman that it is possible to picture; wretched creatures, sunk and miserable themselves, using all their mighty influence to prevent sailors from rising and making it quite impossible that that the thousands who associate with them, can, so long as they continue to do so, become Christians.? The Sailor's Institute would serve lemonade but no alcohol, and provide grounds in which to play cricket, quoit and skittles, as well as ideally a bathing pool and classrooms for teaching and lectures. Toynbee reflects upon the current state of affairs in Cal … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Civil War]
Vicksburg, Ms.: J.M. Swords, Proprietor, 1863. Folio broadside, printed on wallpaper. Old folds, closed tear in blank margin of one fold, some spotting. Very good. The newspapers printed on wallpaper in Vicksburg during its siege were widely noted at the time, and the Union troops who took possession of the city on July 4 completed and distributed the last issue standing in type. Numerous facsimile versions were published later. This is the first reproduction issue, probably produced in the North as a commemoration later in 1863. Brigham identifies this as the first reproduction, noting its minor variations from the original, mainly the substitution of the article, "Recent Federal Losses at Vicksburg," in the last column. Brigham details some twenty facsimile versions. Brigham, "Wall-Paper Newspapers of the Civil War" in BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ESSAYS FOR WILBERFORCE EAMES (New York, 1924), pp.203-9.

ADDISON W. PRESTON
1863. After the patriotic fervor of 1861 filled Union armies with volunteers, the United States struggled to fill and expand Union armies. In March 1863, Congress passed the Enrollment Act, establishing a national draft to provide manpower for the Union Army. Drafted men could hire substitutes or pay a commutation fee of $300, and both policies were controversial, leading to the slogan, "rich man's war, poor man's fight."On October 17, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln called for 300,000 additional volunteers for the Union army, divided by the War Department into quotas for each of the respective loyal states. If a state did not meet its quota by January 5, 1864, a draft would fill the remaining quota for each state. The quota for Vermont was 3,300 men, in addition to the requirements of the July 1863 draft not completely filled. Active recruiting furnished more than 3,700 men by the end of January 1864, and more than 1,000 veterans, like those in Preston's cavalry regiment, reenlisted in the field. On March 14, 1864, President Lincoln called for 200,000 more volunteers.ADDISON W.
