Sterling, Campbell & Albright. Greensboro, NC. 1863. 212 pp. Softcover in original faded wraps. Bindings are rubbed and scuffed from handling. There is a diagonal crease on the front cover near the spine. Paper on spine has mostly perished. Prior owner wrote in pencil "M. A. Bernhardt Book" on contents page. A similar notation inside rear cover. Text is lightly foxed, has some dampstaining on fore-edge of some pages. Some pages are dog-eared. Parrish & Willingham 6074. A scrap of newspaper was used as a bookmark. Based on the wording of the text, the newspaper was published during the War. Part of the text reads as follows: "...When the South is safely anchored in an English harbour and a French port, where are you, you miserable sinner before God? May God have mercy on your soul! Amen." - Leonidas Polk Its entirely possible that this could be the same Leonidas Polk who was second cousin to President James K. Polk, and served in the War as a Confederate General. Another interesting piece of text reads: "A Suggestion: This war will have failed in one of its most important uses, truly remarks the Eufaula Spirit of the South, if it do not teach the South a lesson of undying hate [...] United States Government..." A SCARCE Confederate Imprint! Not Ex-Lib. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.

Oddo Giacomo
presso Giuseppe Scorza di Nicola (Gernia e Erba), 1863. 3 volumi in-4° (280x195mm), pp. 600, (4); 598, (2); 595, (5); brossura editoriale con titolo entro filetti plurimi con fregi angolari. Testo entro duplice filetto. Numerosissime vignette xilografiche n.t. Piccoli restauri alle brossure. Bell'esemplare in barbe e a fogli chiusi. (Francesco Brancato in D.B.I., 11, 1969). Marchetti, 6403. D.B.I., cit. (con bibliografia). Italiano

ABRAHAM LINCOLN
New York, NY, 1863. Contains Lincoln's entire 1863 Message to Congress, where he reaffirmed his commitment to emancipation, as well as His Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction, which laid out a plan to return the rebellious states to the Union fold. Commonly called the "Ten Percent Plan," it allowed for a state to hold new elections when 10% of its 1860 voters took a loyalty oath to the Union. [ABRAHAM LINCOLN].Newspaper. New York Times, New York, N.Y., Dec. 10, 1863, with "Supplement to The New York Times" complete with its own masthead. 12 pp. 14¾ x 21 in.Excerpt"To now abandon them would be not only to relinquish a lever of power, but would also be a cruel and an astounding breach of faith. I may add at this point that while I remain in my present position I shall not attempt to retract or modify the emancipation proclamation, nor shall I return to slavery any person who is free by the terms of that proclamation or by any of the acts of Congress."Historical BackgroundThroughout the fall of 1863, eventual Union victory became increasingly clear, and on December 8, 1863, Lincoln issued his Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction. This lenient plan that offered citizens of the rebellious states full pardons, voting, and property rights (except possession of slaves), encouraged the states to begin addressing the issue of the freedmen and women without compromising their rights, and allowed a former Confederate state to hold elections and form a pro-Union government once 10% of the number of voters in the 1860 election swore loyalty oaths. CIVIL WAR. CHARLES E. WALBRIDGE
Autograph Letter Signed, to "George," July 17, 1863, Folly Island, South Carolina. 5 pp., 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. "I cannot but think constantly of the approaching battle tomorrow; just think if we get Charleston! Vicksburg is fallen, Richmond at our last accounts was seriously threatened, Lee was in chancery up in Maryland, and now if we can only take this accursed city." "night before last, Gen. Terry's forces which were on James Island but have since been withdrawn, were attacked by five regiments just from Richmond. In this affair the 54th Mass. (colored) was engaged, and every one says they did well."Complete TranscriptNorth end of Folly Island July 17/63Dear George, I am afraid that I have been very negligent about writing home for the last few weeks, but it has been so because my mind has been so much occupied that I could not write; in fact I have not read the newspapers. I am having more leisure now however. The day after the assault on Morris Island, I received orders from Lt. Col. Elwell Chief Q. M. Dept of South, to proceed to Moms Island, and establish myself as Post Q. M. and stating that I would be relieved on Folly Island by Capt. Dunton. Accordingly I started bright and early in the morning, but on getting to the North end, I met Gen. Vogdes (who is comd'g the forces on the island) who claimed that I was under his orders & had been all the time. He ordered me to remain at this point. I am therefore still Quartermaster of Vogdes Brigade.I wrote a brief account of the attack on the batteries on this end of Morris Island. Since then our forces have been working with … [Click Below for Full Description]

New York J. Bradburn 1863. Presumed first edition thus, AND VERY RARE. Small 8vo, in the publisher's original printed green paper wrappers stitched with thread, the upper cover lettered in black within a multi-ruled framework, the final leaf of ads serving as the lower cover. 76pp., 4 ads. A remarkably well preserved copy of this very rare printing, the text-block quite pleasing, the upper wrapper in excellent condition, the paper at the spine a bit worn and the lower wrapper lacking. A previous owners neat diagram of the battle is penciled on the blank verso of the title-page. A VERY RARE SEPARATE PRINTING OF THIS CONCISE AND VIVID ACCOUNT OF THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED AS PART OF LES MISERABLES. While there were several noteworthy 20th century printings, this is the earliest of the contemporary 19th century printings. ONLY SIX COPIES ARE LISTED IN INSTITUTIONAL HOLDINGS; Harvard, Yale, New York Public Library, The Huntington, Boston University, and the University of Pennsylvania. We can find no other copies of any of the 19th century imprints currently on the market whatsoever. This copy, the earliest of the imprints and in fully original period state, should be considered very rare. Hugo's account of Waterloo originally appeared as part of Les Miserables. It is a romantic and idealized telling from the viewpoint of a Republican and a Bonapartist, very similar to Marius Pontmercy. The major events of the battle are there and quite accurately; the charge of the Ney, the fall of the Guard, etc. The smaller points are all quite plausible; the Colonel of the G … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEBLANC, William.
New York Snyder Black & Sturn April. tinted lithograph within an arch-topped border, titled below, 53.5 x 70 cm. (21 x 27 1/2 in). Fine lithographic view over Panama City, taken from Ancon hill, at 200 metres the highest natural point in the country. The almost bird's-eye view depicts various ships at anchor in the distance, framed in the foreground by trees and flora. Ancon Hill was of key strategic importance, as shown by, for example, when Captain Morgan climbed the hill to gain a knowledge of the local defences before sacking the city in 1671. It became part of the Panama Canal Zone under U.S. jurisdiction and was subsequently left as jungle, providing a rich habitat for wildlife up to the present day. 1863 was a significant date in Panama's history when constitutional changes brought increasing autonomy from its union with Colombia. William LeBlanc owned Ancon Hill, and when Anton De Lesseps visited Panama in the 1880's, with a view to building a his famous canal across the Isthmus, Leblanc warned him that there would not be trees enough to make crosses to place over the graves of his labourers. This proved sadly prophetic as the canal cost thousands of lives in its construction.

[Civil War; Harper's Ferry] Butler, Joshua K.
1863. Ephemera. Manuscript letter dated Jan. 27, 1863 from Corp. Joshua K. Butler to his Sister. Butler was in Company 6 of 132nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry and gives an interesting view into a soldier's life in the Civil War's Army of the Potomac during some significant campaigns in the South. "Dear Sister [...] 'If I am spared to return home again I will tell you about the hard ships and easy ships of a soldier's life.' He goes on to describe some of the horrors of war he has seen -- men's limbs being shot off, heads split open by shells; his own illness; and the most recent news… 'We came very near having a heavy Battle last week but it commenced raining while the Army was on the move and rained 3 days and made the roads so bad that the Artillery, Ammunition and supply trains could not move one mile in one day […] and we marched back to our old quarters. […] 'but as soon as the roads get in a good condition again there will be another grand forward move but in what direction I cannot say as Burnsides does not yet inform me of his plan of attack, but I hope it will not be on the Fredericksburg plan for our army was taken in a Slaughter pen as some of our soldiers called it...' [referring to Battle of Fredericksburg Dec. 12-15] . Butler refers to Union General Ambrose Burnside and the tremendous rain which prevented his midwinter offensive to cross at Bank's Ford on the Rappahannock River, now called the "Mud March." It was Burnside's final attempt to command the Army of the Potomac. [Wikipedia] Lincoln replaced hi … [Click Below for Full Description]
