SPEKE, John Hanning (1827-1864).
Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1863. [African Exploration] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (23 x 16cm), pp.[2] xxxii; 656. With 26 engraved plates, including a frontispiece portrait of the author, and two folding maps in a pouch at rear. Recent tan half calf with raised bands, gilt titles to spine and marbled paper over boards. All edges red. Black ink ownership to publisher's blank. Spotting to frontispiece and title page; very light occasional spotting elsewhere. A couple of paper restorations to pp.123/4 and final leaf. Tight-back binding prevents the book opening fully; some light rubbing. Very good. Speke discovered both Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria on an expedition with Sir Richard Burton between 1856 and 1859, but then became embroiled in a dispute with the other distinguished traveller over which of the two lakes was the true source of the Nile. This book was written following a second expedition headed by Speke in an attempt to counter Burton's criticisms, but sadly he died in a hunting accident before a planned debate between the two could take place. The question wasn't finally settled until Henry Morton Stanley's expedition of 1874-77. [Attributes: First Edition]

Originally published in English in 1861, the most important of Mill?s political works following On Liberty (1859), and his most substantial work on political institutions, Considerations on Representative Government ?discusses to what extent forms of government are a matter of choice, the criterion of a 'good form of government', and explains his belief that representative government is the best form of government because it demands the most from its citizens and encourages their development. Half-title is present. 462 pp. + (1) leaf (colophon). the leather is a little cracked along the front board, but exhibits no weakness. [Pennsylvania Freedmen's Relief Association]
Philadelphia: Merrihew & Thompson, 1863. First edition. Original paper wraps stitched at spine. Gently toned and with a small snag causing paper loss to the rear wrap and final two leaves with loss to the words "help" and "Next." Else an internally clean and complete copy of this rare piece of African American history documenting the efforts of the Port Royal Experiment following the area's abandonment by former slaveholders. Scarce at institutions and in the trade, the present is the only copy on the market. Beginning in 1861, as the Union army began liberating the coast of South Carolina near the harbor of Port Royal, abolitionists initiated a program in which emancipated families worked land abandoned by former slaveholders. Known as the Port Royal Experiment, the program moved into full force in 1863 as the war ended, making it possible for freedmen to take full possession of the land as citizens. The present report was the first one compiled by the Philadelphia Freedmen's Relief Association; and it documents the difficult realities of transitioning a community from slavery to freedom. Providing training, food, and clothing to so many people -- even those who had money -- was a challenge in a region that had suffered wartime damage to infrastructure. Nevertheless, the report reveals the commitment on both sides to build up and help the Port Royal Experiment succeed; if it did, it was not only aid to those in South Carolina but could serve as an assistance model to other new communities. NOOTEN, Berthe Hoola van.
Brussels and Leipzig Émile Tarnier, 1863. First edition. folio (59.5 x 45 cm), 40 chromolithographed plates by P. Depannemaeker after Hoola van Nooten, some heightened in gum arabic; contemporary green half morocco gilt, all edges gilt, a fine copy. Rare First Edition, beautifully bound, with the fine decorative plates very clean. They depict a mixture of indigenous, naturalised and introduced plants, chosen principally for their eye-catching beauty. In the preface Berthe Hoola van Nooten (1840-1885) states that she produced this book in order to clear a debt incurred through family misfortune, and 'provide by labour the wants of a numerous family'. Berthe Hoola van Nooten (1840-1885 produced the present work as a heroic response to circumstances which left her on Java, a widow in her early twenties with a family to support and little money, certainly not enough to pay for her family's passage home to Belgium. 'Aware of the vogue in Europe for exotic flora, she decided to take advantage of her enforced exile and put to use the skill at flower painting that she had no doubt acquired as a girl. Thus she prepared forty magnificent plates for Fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de l'Ile de Java. [van Nooten] was clearly a more than competent artist, for the splendid tropical plants, with their lush foliage, vividly coloured flowers and exotic fruit, have been depicted with great skill. She managed to accentuate the splendour of each species by adopting a style that combined great precision and clarity with a touch of neo-Baroque exuberance, revelling in the rich forms and colo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles Godfrey Leland]
Frederick Leypoldt, 1863. This comic satire ridiculing northerners who opposed the Civil War was the creation of Charles Godfrey Leland, late editor of the comic weekly Vanity Fair and current editor of the definantly radical Continental Monthly. Though he denied authorship during the war, he took full credit for it later. In a letter he wrote near the end of his life, Leland asserted that he drew all of the pictures, except No. 24, which was drawn by his brother. Furthermore he wrote all of the verses, except four by Frank Wells, four by G.H. Boker, and three by E.S. Rand. Leland had the nasty habit in his dotage to take credit for all sorts of things he had little to do with, but in this case he is probably reliable. A number of the full-page plates depict famous politicians of the day, including Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Clement Vallandigham, Horatio Seymour, and Fernando Wood. Oblong octavo. 32 pages. Fully illustrated. Near fine, with an expertly restored spine. Housed in a custom-made clamshell box. $1,000 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve,
Petits frottis, papier jauni. Bon exemplaire, bonne provenance.
