Ironclad Nantucket Commander Donald M. Fairfax, en Route to Attack Charleston Harbor, Writes of the Monitor (two weeks after Battle of Hampton Roads) and Slavery

Port Royal, [S.C.] 1863 - Autograph Letter Signed, as Commander of U.S.S. Nantucket, to "Cooke," 4 pp., 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. Port Royal, [S.C.]. March 26, 1863. "I do not think the Ironclad Monitor deserving of the credit of sea boat although they can stand a great deal.I am rather on the old democratic order - go for the Union always - but religiously believe in observing the Constitution literally - This horrible negro question I ever have deplored and view those in the North as inimical to the success of our Republic who have kept up this strife - of course there is no excuse for the South but certainly the abolitionist is much to blame" Complete TranscriptIronclad "Nantucket."Port Royal, March 26, 63Dear Cooke I fully intended on writing you. I am almost sure that I acknowledged the receipt of yr: letter dated Providence Febry 21 62 immediately after my return from Washington. I regretted very much not having seen you when you came to Boston in search of me - an unfortunate Court of inquiry at Washington called me south when I intended being in Boston on a certain day. I was pressed very much by department at Boston and New York to get my vessel to sea. Very little time was given me to think of my social relations. After great hurry I got finally to sea on the 9th March and the next day a storm drove me into Delaware break water - on the 11th at 2 PM - in tow of the side wheel Government boat Florida the Nantucket again turned her head south. Was off Cape Henry & Charles by daylight the following morning and the eve of the 13th we passed south of Hatteras - until then very smooth - getting into Gulf Stream with the wind strong from North an ugly sea caused our irregular craft to flounder about considerably - striking heavily as the sea wld drive her onward towards our port - but nothing unpleasant arose during our entire voyage to Port Royal. We struck a good vein of weather - just as we reached port heavy south west winds came on we experienced a head sea after passing Charleston - iron clads of the Monitor class labour heavily in a head sea - fair winds & seas do not inconvenience them - at least not so seriously - seas pass over them without any hard blows. I do not think the Ironclad Monitor deserving of the credit of sea boat although they can stand a great deal - we were under the water sometimes two feet - but the buoyancy of these vessels seems to be in proportion to the sea - to a certain extent at least - strange things surely - had Ericsson consulted men of professional attainments he might have very materially improved upon these vessels - they have their vulnerable points! Cooke you never have told me whether you are a married man? I take it for granted that you are - in my opinion a good wife is one of Gods best gifts to a man - Now my friend I would say that you who have no night watches, no signal gun to fire, no enemy to meet as we soon must, are favored more than those whose duties call them away from the home & fire side. Now engaged in fighting against rebellion. I thank my Heavenly Father now that I am called upon to go forth to battle with an enemy of the General Government that I am where I am now - but Cooke what will compensate a man for these cruel separations from his family? Therefore I envy you! But of that we will not now speak - all union loving people must feel desirous of serving their Country one way or another. We are about to enter upon a great undertaking - time will show what it is - I only hope success may attend it. The world are interested in the result of iron clads, although I do not think the class perfected by any means. I write as tho at P. Royal - in reality we are within 18 miles off Fort Sumter. You know my dear fellow that I'm not permitted to write of any contemplated attack. You can infer from the press North and South we are about to attempt a great work - when we finish what we are about then I will give you a full account of the whole affair - until .         De la greffe animale.

Martinet, Paris 1863 - In-4 (227 x 195 mm) de 110 pp.ch.; demi-chag. rouge (reliure moderne). D.S.B. II, 59-63. Édition originale. Thèse de doctorat en médecine, rédigée par un des élèves de Claude Bernard. Dans cette thèse, "Bert emphasized that the cells and tissues lived their own lives, growing and differentiating independently of any superior vital force as long as they were in a suitable milieu" (D.S.B.). Chto Delat? [What is to be Done?]

St. Petersburg: Sovremennik, 1863. First printing. contemporary boards. Very Good. CHERNYSHEVSKY [TCHERNICHEFSKY]. Chto Delat? [What is to be Done?]. In the original printing of issues 3-5 of "Sovremennik", March May, 1863. St. Petersburg, 1863. (5) 142; (373) 526; (55) 197 + (1): "Zagadka", by N. Berg. FIRST APPEARANCE.The extremely scarce first printing of all parts of the most influential Russian novel ever written, Chernyshevsky's magnum opus, which is considered the single most important work of modern revolutionary thought. "[N]o work in modern literature, with the possible exception of Uncle Tom's Cabin, can compete with "What Is to Be Done?" in its effect on human lives and its power to make history. For Chernyshevsky's novel far more than Marx's Capital, supplied the emotional dynamic that eventually went to make the Russian Revolution" (Joseph Frank).Chernyshevsky wrote the story of Vera Pavlovna, a love story (as identified in his own preface) to redeem the reputation of the new intellectuals. The character of Bazarov, in Turgenevs Fathers and Sons, soiled the reputation of the new intellectuals, presenting them as nihilistic. Chernyshevsky rejected this characterization as he asserted a vision of society that embraced the scientific materialism, rational egoism, utilitarianism, and positivism of the time. Later, Dostoevsky would reject Chernyshevskys philosophical vision in his Notes from Underground and Crime and Punishment.CONDITION: All three issues bound together in a contemporary full leather, blindstamped binding. Gilt lettering inside red labels on spine. Clean and bright throughout. Pages of third issue (May) a bit longer and wider than the other two, but wide margins throughout. Hinges a bit worn, but otherwise very good or better. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST

1812 ????. [Notes of Aleksey Petrovich Yermolov about the war of 1812].

Tchorzewski; S. Gerstmann Londres; Bruxelles printed by Prince Peter Dolgoroukov London 1863 - Octavo (23 x 16 cm). Title, 219, [4]pp.; light small waterstain to upper margin, some light occasional spotting. Contemporary quarter calf over green marbled boards, spine with raised bands with gilt lettering in one compartment; rubbed, corners bumped, upper spine repaired. A detailed account of the Great Patriotic War by one of the most distinguished Russian military leaders and direct participant of the events. First edition with fine provenance. When Napoleon attacked Russia in 1812, Russian troops began to retreat to Moscow. It was a period full of intrigues and Yermolov (1777 –1861) was instrumental in resolving some of them, particularly a conflict between the two prominent generals Pyotr Barclay de Tolly and Pyotr Bagration. As a chief of Barclay's staff Yermolov covered up harsh words in their correspondence while appealing to Emperor Alexander I to replace Barclay de Tolly with Bagration. Thanks to Yermolov's efforts the generals made the decision to unite the First and the Second Armies for the successful defence of the city of Smolensk. Yermolov distinguished himself at the Battle of Borodino, where he was lightly wounded leading a counterattack that recaptured the Great Redoubt. For his courage, he received the Order of St. Anna. During the course of the war Yermolov kept a detailed diary, notes from which he reviewed and refined later. He was reluctant to publish it, but eventually surrendered to the pleas of his friends and family. A trusted friend, to whom Yermolov gave his notes a few months before his death, made a conscious decision to publish the memoirs with no editorial corrections, which today allows us to read the Yermolov's words as they were originally written by him. Count Grigory Sergeievich Stroganoff, 1829–1910, a member of the well-known Russian family of connoisseurs and collectors, was himself a collector of paintings and objects of fine art from Europe, Russia, the Countries of the Mediterranean basin and the Near and Far East. Stroganoff kept his collection along with the library of 30 000 volumes in a grand building in Rome named Palazzo Stroganoff after a major renovation. After the Bolshevik revolution most of the collection was sold or donated to museums by the Count's heirs. Bibliokhronika III, 87. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Race Baiting Takes Center Stage in the 1864 Presidential Election

Philadelphia, PA 1863 - Broadside. Democratic Catechism of Negro Equality. Philadelphia, Pa., July 4, 1863., 6 1/2 x 9 in. Republicans counter the ridiculous charge that Lincoln favored African Americans over white Americans. Instead, they use many individual instances to assert an equally absurd claim of a long history of Democratic support of African American rights. Complete TranscriptDEMOCRATIC CATECHISM OF NEGRO EQUALITY Who said that all men are created equal? Thomas Jefferson, the Father of Democracy. Who gave the negroes the right of suffrage in New York; The Democratic party. Who presided over the convention which gave this privilege to negroes? Martin Van Buren, a Democrat. Who married a negro woman, and by her had mulatto children? Richard M. Johnson, a good Democrat. Who elected Richard M. Johnson Vice President of the United States? The Democratic party. If President Van Buren had died, and Richard M. Johnson had become President; who would have become the Democratic mistress of the White House? This same negro woman Who made the negro a citizen of the State of Maine? The Democratic party. Who enacted a similar law in Massachusetts? The Democratic party. Who gave the negro a right to vote in New Hampshire? The Democratic party. Who permitted every colored person owning $250 in New York to become a voter? A General Assembly, purely Democratic. Who repealed the laws of Ohio which required negroes to give bonds and security before settling in that State? The Democratic party. Who made mulattoes legal voters in Ohio? The Supreme Court of which Rueben Wood was Chief Justice. What became of Rueben Wood? The Democratic party elected him governor three times, and he is still a leader of the Democratic party. Who helped give free negroes the right to vote in Tennessee under her Constitution of 1796? General Jackson. Was General Jackson a good Democrat? He generally passed as such. Who with the above facts, and many others, staring them in the face, are continually whining about "negro suffrage" and negro equality? The Democratic party. Who voted against the White Soldier voting in Penn'a in 1864? The Democratic party. All these things were done by Democrats, and yet they deny being in favor of negro equality, and charge it upon the Republicans-just like the thief who cries "stop thief" the loudest.N.B. -Send your Democratic friend one of these Valuable Documents. Sold Wholesale and Retail at Johnson's, No. 18 North Tenth Street, Philadelphia, Pa. See his Political Songs.Historical Background Arguments over white supremacy found fertile ground during the 1864 presidential election. Lincoln expected to lose the contest and faced challenges from "Copperhead" Peace Democrats who sought an immediate end to the war. They encouraged Union soldiers to desert, Confederate P.O.W.'s to escape, and met with Confederate agents. With the backing of important newspapers such as the Chicago Times and the New York Journal of Commerce, Copperheads relentlessly sought to influence public opinion against the war. In the middle of the Civil War and after Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation, it was easy for to attack Lincoln on racial grounds. Anti-Lincoln propaganda accused him of untoward preference for African Americans at the expense of whites, and election literature suggested miscegenation, despoiling the Union to free slaves, or being of African descent himself. Both Democrats and Republicans played the race card in 1864. In this case, Republican propagandists try to turn the tables on Democratic arguments, laying out a sardonic case that the Democrats were the actual party fighting for African American civil rights. The author of this broadside lists the many laws and examples of racial progress presented by the Democratic party-from voting rights, to state citizenship, to the possibility of a black First Lady. However, the absurd charges did not stick. "The consistently racist policies of Pennsylvania's Democr. (See website for full description)

President Lincoln & His Most Profitable Client, the Illinois Central Railroad

1863 - Autograph Letter Signed "A. Lincoln" as President, to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, May 23, 1863. "Executive Mansion, Washington" stationery, 2 pp. on one sheet, 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. With front panel of original envelope, to which Lincoln has added an Autograph Note Signed, and Stanton has also added an Autograph Note Signed. Less than six years after he successfully sued the Illinois Central for legal fees, President Lincoln faces another problem with the railroad, now vital for the transportation of Union troops. In another dispute over payments, he tells his Secretary of War, "If I had the leisure which I have not, I believe I could settle it; but prima facie it appears to me we better settle the account ourselves." TranscriptExecutive Mansion Washington, May 23, 1863Hon Secy of War My dear Sir,In order to construct the Illinois Central Railroad, a large grant of land was made by the United States to the State of Illinois, which land was again given to the Railroad Company by the State, in certain provisions of the Charter. By the U.S. grant, certain previleges [sic]were attempted to be secured from the contemplated Railroad to the U.S., and by the Charter certain per centage of the income of the road was to be from time to time paid to the State of Illinois. At the beginning of the present war the Railroad did certain carrying for the U.S. for which it claims pay; and, as I understand, the U.S. claims that at least part of this the road was bound to do without pay. Though attempts have been made to settle the matter, it remains unsettled; meanwhile the Road refuses to pay the per-centage to the State. This delay is working badly; and I understand the delay exists because of there being no definite decision whether the U.S. will settle its own account with the Railroad, or will allow the State to settle it, & account to the State for it. If I had the leisure which I have not, I believe I could settle it; but prima facie it appears to me we better settle the account ourselves, because that will save us all question as to whether the State deals fairly with us in the settlement of our account with a third party - the R.R. I wish you would see Mr. Butler, late our State Treasurer, and see if something definite can not be done in the case. Yours truly, A Lincoln"Historical BackgroundLincoln had a long prior relationship with the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1851, although not a member of the state legislature, he participated in the struggle over the passage of the railroad's charter. Its 705 mile-long track was completed in 1856, making it the longest in the country. Lincoln represented the Illinois Central in 45 cases in the 1850s, mostly as defense attorney. The Mr. Butler mentioned was William Butler (1797-1876). He and Lincoln became friends when Butler was Clerk of the Sangamon County Circuit Court (1836-1841) and Lincoln a circuit lawyer. Butler later served as Illinois State Treasurer (1859-1862).Illinois had granted the railroad an exemption for all state taxes on the condition that it pay an annual "charter tax." However, the McLean County assessor levied a $428.57 tax on the railroad's 118 acres in that county. The railroad claimed that the General Assembly act chartering the railroad exempted it from such taxes. The railroad retained Lincoln and sued to prevent the County from selling railroad land to pay taxes. The parties agreed to go to the Illinois Supreme Court, where the only question would be whether the county had a lawful right to tax the railroad's property. In Illinois Central RR v. McLean County, Illinois & Parke, Justice Scates ruled that the charter was constitutional and that the legislature and the state could exempt property from taxation. Lincoln received $200 for his services in both courts. After consulting with fellow attorneys, Lincoln told the railroad he deserved more. By the mid-19th century, a number of amateur archaeologists, including, most prominently, Frank Calvert and MacLaren, had identified Hisarlik (or Hissarlik), in Turkey, as the site of ancient Troy, but their pioneering work was overshadowed in the 1870s by the great German amateur archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. MacLaren had published A Dissertation on the Topography of the Plain of Troy as early as 1822, and in the early 1860s, after visiting Hisarlik, he positively identified it as the site of Ancient Troy in his The Plain of Troy Described, often identified as a reissue, or second edition, of A Dissertation. But in the book's preface, MacLaren explains, "Two-thirds of the present edition either consist of new matter, or have been rewritten; and I have not therefore put 'second edition' on the title-page." N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         [FOUR PRO-UNION CIVIL WAR BROADSIDES FROM THE FIELD PRESS OF G.H. SUTHERLAND]

New Bern, N.C., 1863. Four broadsides, varying sizes. Three smaller broadsides with a few small marginal chips and short closed tears, light foxing and dampstaining. Larger broadside somewhat tanned, previously folded, slightly chipped at edges, with a portion at upper right margin replaced, not affecting printed portion. Good plus. Four extremely rare broadsides from the field press of G.H. Sunderland, "of the 92nd N.Y.S.V., who was taken prisoner at the battle of 'Fair Oaks,' and confined as a 'prisoner of war' during the summer and part of the autumn of 1862." Produced while in camp at Fort Anderson, near New Bern, N.C., the broadsides print pro- Union and anti-slavery lyrics to three songs composed by Sutherland, and a lengthier series of verses lamenting the plight of captured Union soldiers in Confederate prison camps. In the "Negro Emancipation Song," Sutherland writes in the voice of the emancipated, expressing gratitude to Abraham Lincoln, and referencing the inhumane treatment of slaves, including separating children from their mothers, whippings, lack of education, sexual abuse, and the slave trade: "Now we've been slaves for many years, / Ne'er tasted freedom's joys, / So please excuse us, dear 'white folks,' / If we make a little noise. / Our shouts will reach 'fair Britton's shore,' / Then echo back again; / Well done old 'Father Abraham,' you've washed out that 'foul stain.'" The song "Shelling a Sutler," pokes fun at Southern merchant living near Sutherland's camp, who believes himself to be in the Confederate army: "He calls himself an 'Officer,' / Because they with him drink, / but if he lacks the 'shoulder straps' / he goes with them to 'sink.'" "The Roll Call of Co. B" celebrates the army life of Company B in the 92nd New York Volunteers: "So around, Company B, and into line fall, / For the drum is now beating the morning roll call, / The day is fast dawning and ne'er let it be said, / that the sun ever caught a brave solider in bed." The largest and longest broadside songsheet, "A Prison Song," recounts at length the tale of the capture of Sutherland and other men from his unit at the battle of Fair Oaks, describes the conditions of prison life, and decries the southern cause: "We are a ragged set of men, / This prison has no charms; / But 'Uncle Sam' will own his boys, / and give us all a farm. / I long to see my friends again, / Of which I fondly dreampt [sic]; / But I'd rather see my country free, / and old Jeff pulling hemp." In the three smaller printings, song lyrics are printed in two columns, with the title and a woodcut portrait of Sutherland at the head of the text, all within an ornamental border. Lyrics to "A Prison Song" are printed in four columns, with two American flags surrounding the title. These broadsides are exceedingly rare. The three smaller songsheets are apparently unrecorded, while OCLC locates only one field press copy of "A Prison Song," at Brown University.
