Tagore / Priyambada Devi's Letters to Okakura / Priyambada Devi's Notebook / Priyambada Devi's Second Notebook / Notes by and concerning Okakura - Housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston / A Record of Okakura's EyesightOkakura Kakuzo (February 14, 1862 September 2, 1913) (also known as Okakura Tenshin) was a Japanese scholar who contributed to the development of arts in Japan. Outside Japan, he is chiefly remembered today as the author of The Book of Tea. Born in Yokohama to parents originally from Fukui, Okakura learned English while attending a school operated by Christian missionary, Dr. Curtis Hepburn. At 15, he entered Tokyo Imperial University, where he first met and studied under Harvard-educated professor Ernest Fenollosa. In 1889, Okakura co-founded the periodical Kokka. In 1887 he was one of the principal founders of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko), and a year later became its head, although he was later ousted from the school in an administrative struggle. Later, he also founded the Japan Art Institute with Hashimoto Gaho and Yokoyama Taikan. He was invited by William Sturgis Bigelow to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1904 and became the first head of the Asian art division in 1910. Okakura was a high-profile urbanite who had an international sense of self. In the Meiji period he was the first dean of the Tokyo Fine Arts School (later merged with the Tokyo Music School to form the current Tokyo University of the Arts). He wrote all of his main works in English. Okakura researched Japan's traditional art and traveled to Europe, the United States, China and India. He emphasised the importance to the modern world of Asian culture, attempting to bring its influence to realms of art and literature that, in his day, were largely dominated by Western culture. His 1903 book on Asian artistic and cultural history, The Ideals of the East with Special Reference to the Art of Japan, published on the eve of the Russo-Japanese War, is famous for its opening paragraph in which he sees a spiritual unity throughout Asia, which distinguishes it from the West: Asia is one. The Himalayas divide, only to accentuate, two mighty civilisations, the Chinese with its communism of Confucius, and the Indian with its individualism of the Vedas. But not even the snowy barriers can interrupt for one moment that broad expanse of love for the Ultimate and Universal, which is the common thought-inheritance of every Asiatic race, enabling them to produce all the great religions of the world, and distinguishing them from those maritime peoples of the Mediterranean and the Baltic, who love to dwell on the Particular, and to search out the means, not the end, of life. In his subsequent book, The Awakening of Japan, published in 1904, he argued that "the glory of the West is the humiliation of Asia." This was an early expression of Pan-Asianism. In this book Okakura also noted that Japan's rapid modernization was not universally applauded in Asia: "We have become so eager to identify ourselves with European civilization instead of Asiatic that our continental neighbors regard us as renegadesnay, even as an embodiment of the White Disaster itself." In Japan, Okakura, along with Fenollosa, is credited with "saving" Nihonga, or painting done with traditional Japanese technique, as it was threatened with replacement by Western-style painting, or "Yoga", whose chief advocate was artist Kuroda Seiki. In fact this role, most assiduously pressed after Okakura's death by his followers, is not taken seriously by art scholars today, nor is the idea that oil painting posed any serious "threat" to traditional Japanese painting. Yet Okakura was certainly instrumental in modernizing Japanese aesthetics, having recognized the need to preserve Japan's cultural heritage, and thus was one of the major reformers during Japan's period of modernization beginning with the Meiji Restoration. Outside Japan, Okakura had an impact on a number of important figures, directly or indirectly, who include Swami Vivekananda, philosopher Martin Heidegger, poet Ezra Pound, and especially poet Rabindranath Tagore and heiress Isabella Stewart Gardner, who were close personal friends of his.         Autograph letter signed to T. H. Huxley ("My dear Huxley").

Down: Apr. 30th,, [1862]. One page, creased where folded. Docketed XXXVII at head in red pencil and with faint red mark. Very good. Darwin writes late at night to report that "I have this minute finished your Address to Geolog. Socy. & I must just thank you for sending it me. ? I have read it with uncommon interest. It is a wonderful condensed & original summary on Palæontology, & I should think & hope will do much good. ? I hope you are not killing yourself with too much work ? Good night ? yours very sincerely, C. Darwin". A remarkable and generous letter from Darwin to his best known supporter. Huxley had delivered the anniversary address to the Geological Society on 21 February 1862, standing in for the absent president. Darwin did not attend, but the address was printed in the Quarterly Journal of the society. This is the report that Huxley had sent and Darwin just read. Huxley had already established himself as "Darwin's Bulldog" by this date, especially after the famous debate at Oxford University in June 1860, where Huxley took on Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford, Huxley defending evolutionary theory and attacking adherence to scripture as a scientific document. But the relationship was never entirely simple, as Huxley was a significant scientist in his own right and sometimes seemed to question Darwin's theory. Huxley responded to this letter on 6 May, saying that he had indeed been ill, but not through over-work, and demanding to know if Darwin "agree[s] with what I say about contemporaneity or not and whether you are prepared to admit as I think your views compel you to do ? that the whole Geological Record is only the skimmings of the pot of life". Darwin's reply suggests that Huxley has pushed his ideas too far and includes the curious phrase "I cannot help hoping that you are not quite as right as you seem to be".

Curiosities of Occult Literature. [Author's annotated copy].

      8. XI, 275 pages plus 11 pages of a travel manuscript to Palestine in the rear of the volume (dates from 1862-1863). Original Hardcover (blindstamped cloth with gilt lettering on spine: "Occult Literature 1878 M.S.S.". Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Exlibris of Marci H. Huthwaite to front pastedown. Interleaved volume with multiple annotations by the author. Cooke's Curiosities of Occult Literature, interleaved, and extensively annotated by the author. The binding is in worn contemporary brown cloth with blind decorations and brown coated endpapers. Both printed text and interleaved pages show marginal browning. Bibliographically the book is not simple: the title page dates from 1863, but the binding is dated to 1878. In the years in between, and afterwards, the author has filled the interleaved pages with his jottings and annotations, meriting the description 'M.S.S.' - manuscript - on the spine. The book itself purports to be 'a plain, unvarnished tale' written in defence of his legal work and pamphleteering on behalf of astrology. In effect the 58 interleaved pages and marginal annotations unpack and amplify the author's opinions as expressed in the printed text. Thus the author appends a two page long explanation of the court case that set in train the book's narrative opposite the title page. It's not possible to do justice to the range and eccentricity of the manuscript interventions but instead to point to some highlights. At one extreme the author expands on the printed text with additional factual information, for example giving the address of a London phrenologist, additionally noting that it was 'in Piccadilly opposite St James's Church where the author's mother was baptised.' At the opposite extreme there are lengthy narrative interventions such as an account of the death of Mr White, a 'martyr' to astrology in the Isle of Wight and a lengthy excursus against Britain's 'secret police'. The author debates Robert Owen's complicated relationship with the establishment particularly the alarm this 'socialist' caused with his 'appearance at the Levee of Queen V[ictoria]' The astrological theme runs consistently through the annotations with exercises in astrological physiognomy as well as astrological tables and analyses of many of the people referred to in the text. To the rear of the book is an eight page diary of a trip to Palestine, undertaken by the author in 1862-3.

[DOSTOYEVSKY'S SECOND BOOK] Zapiski iz myortvogo doma. (V dvukh chastyakh) [i.e. Notes from The House of the Dead. In Two Parts]

St. Petersburg: Izd. A.F. Bazunova; v tipografii Iosafata Ogryzko, 1862. Second. P.1. [4], 269 pp.; P.2. [4], 198 pp. 13,5х21 cm. In contemporary quarter leather binding with gilt-lettering on the spine (two parts in one volume). Boards rubbed and stained, corners and spine ends bumped, occasional foxing, small cracks on endpapers along the spine, soiling of few pages. Otherwise a very good clean copy. First complete separate edition. The text first appeared in periodical 'Vremya' in 1861-1862. "Notes from The House of the Dead" was one of the most sensational book of the time, it instantly brought back Dostoyevsky's popularity, made him famous and for some time he was known as "House of the Dead's author". This novel is a forerunner of his famous "Crime and Punishment" and "The Brothers Karamazov". It led Dostoyevsky to include the theme of murder in his later works, a theme not found in any of his works preceding "The House of the Dead". Tolstoy called this work ''the finest work of all modern Russian literature''. Dostoyevsky wrote it after his release from prison and described, through a fictional narrative, the details of his own life in Siberia (in 1849 he was sentenced to four years at hard labour) and that of the prisoners incarcerated with him (usually using their real names). "The House of the Dead" was the first work in press about penal labor in the Russian Empire but it perfectly served public's interests of the time. Herzen referred to it as a frightening book ''this epoch left us... in its way a carmen horrendum, which will always adorn the exit from the dark reign of Nicholas, like Dante's superscription over the entrance''. In his letters Dostoyevsky was writing that he didn't lose time while in Siberia because he got to know Russian people (he was surrounded mostly by serfs and soldiers who tried to escape their hard life). Dostoyevsky had the idea for the book since he was in prison. He worked on the novel in 1859-1862. When the introduction and first chapter were published they were not censored. But the second chapter was investigated by Censor Committee that is why it wasn't published for some time. The reason was unusual - the Committee considered the prison's description could make the crime tempting as described punishment didn't seem as hard as it was supposed to. Later Dostoevsky started his own magazine 'Vremya' where he eventually published all chapters. Kilgour. №279.

It is named after John Henry Pepper who implemented a working version of the device in 1862. Dircks also investigated attempts at the invention of a perpetual motion device, writing that those who sought to create such a thing were "half-learned" or "totally ignorant". Dircks was born in Liverpool on 26 August 1806. He was apprenticed to a mercantile firm and spent much of his free time studying practical mechanics, chemistry, and literature. Around the mid-1820s he began lecturing about chemistry and electricity while writing literary articles in the local press and scientific papers in the Mechanics' Magazine and other journals. In 1837 he became a life member of the British Association, and afterwards contributed papers to its proceedings. Two years later he wrote a pamphlet regarding a proposed union of mechanics' and literary institutions. He also wrote a short treatise entitled "Popular Education, a series of Papers on the Nature, Objects, and Advantages of Mechanics' Institutions", first printed in Liverpool in 1840. He became a practical engineer, conducting railway, canal, and mining works, before progressing to the role of consulting engineer. He continued to investigate technologies and invent new devices, taking out several patents between 1840 and 1857. Dircks joined the Royal Society of Literature, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and other scientific bodies. In 1867 he was elected a full Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, his proposer being William John McQuorn Rankine. In 1868 he was given an honorary degree (LL.D.) from Tusculum College in Tennessee. Dircks died in Brighton on 17 September 1873. (Wikipedia)

Sitten- und Charakterbilder aus der Turkei und Tscherkessien.

Berlin, Reinhold Schlingmann 1862. 4 Bll., 288 S. HLdr. d. Zt. mit Rückenschild. 16 x 12 cm. FIRST EDITION of one of the world's most influential novels in exquisite contemporary bindings. "Ever since its publication in 1862, Les Miserables has remained one of the most widely read novels in the world... In addition, dozens of film version- from France, the United States, Italy, Egypt, India, Japan, and the Soviet Union- have perpetuated the legendary quality of the book...

Es asimismo autor de numerosas novelas de carácter histórico y de cuentos ------------ Paul Lacroix (April 27, 1806 - October 16, 1884), French author and journalist, was born in Paris, the son of a novelist. He is best known under his pseudonym of P.L. Jacob, bibliophile, or Bibliophile Jacob, suggested by the constant interest he took in public libraries and books generally. Lacroix was an extremely prolific and varied writer. More than twenty historical romances alone came from his pen, and he also wrote a variety of serious historical works, including a history of Napoleon III, and the life and times of the Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. He was the joint author with Ferdinand Séré of a five-volume work, Le moyen âge et la renaissance (1847), a standard work on the manners, customs and dress of those times, the chief merit of which lies in the great number of illustrations it contains. He also wrote many monographs on phases of the history of culture, including Manners, Custom and Dress During the Middle Ages and During the Renaissance Period. Over the signature Pierre Dufour was published an exhaustive Histoire de la prostitution (1851-1852), which has always been attributed to Lacroix. His works on bibliography were also extremely numerous. In 1885 he was appointed librarian of the Arsenal Library, Paris.

        Skverny anekdot [ ] (A Nasty Anecdote, in Vremya #11 [ ])

St Petersburg: Dostoevsky, 1862. First printing. Very Good +. DOSTOEVSKY [ ], Fyodor. Skverny anekdot [ ] (A Nasty Anecdote, in Vremya 11 [ ]), Petersburg, 1862. 1 leaf + Half-title + TP + [5] 354 + [1] - 212 + 2 leaves = ads + 1 leaf. Octavo. First Printing. The first appearance of an early short story of Dostoevsky, first published on pages 299-352 of Vremya 11 in 1862. It is sometimes translated as A Disgraceful Affair, A Most Unfortunate Incident, or An Unpleasant Predicament. The story is a satire of a Russian civil servant. According to Jessie Coulson, in the introduction to a 1966 Penguin edition, the theme is the terrible gulf between a man's idea of himself, his ideals, and his motives, and what they prove to be in the harsh light of reality. Its cruelty lies in the recognition that the tragedy of failure to come up to one's own expectations... is essentially comic. Richard Pevear, translator of many of Dostoevskys works, identifies the hidden target of the story as being the spirit of reform during the period of the sons (the radical intelligentsia of the 1860s)the target of much of Dostoevskys writing. CONDITION: Very good. Contemporary quarter leather with faded gilt to spine, marbled boards. Some wear to extremities, and pages spotted throughout. Faint stamp to verso of title page with remnant of sticker to upper edge of spine. Very good. Scarce first printing of one of Dostoevskys short stories. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST
