Mendeleev, D.I.
St. Petersburg: Obshchestvennaia po'lza, 1861. [543] pp. 23x14 cm. Contemporary half-leather binding. Spine is restored. Some foxing in the text. Otherwise very good. First edition. Extremely rare. 27-year-old Dmitry Mendeleev (1834-1907) famously wrote this book in 61 days. The study on the organic chemistry was awarded with Demidov prize (the most prestigious scientific prize of the time). With this publication Mendeleev became widely-known in the world of science. The success helped him to secure the position at Saint Petersburg Technological University where 8 years later he produced another textbook 'Principles of Chemistry' that feautured the first periodic table of elements. 'The Organic Chemistry' became the most popular book on the subject in 19th century in Russia. In a way this work could be regarded as a preface to 'The Principles of Chemistry'. By writing it Mendeleev brought together all of the scattered knowledge in the field. The aim was to help students to understand it better, but sometimes it was too sophisticated for the students, as one of them told Dmitry Ivanovich 'he could not follow'. After that remark Mendeleev wrote: «The edifice of science requires not only material, but also a plan, and necessitates the work of preparing the materials, putting them together, working out the plans and symmetrical proportions of the various parts», and soon he started to work on 'The Principles'. No copies according to the Worldcat.

STIRLING-CLARKE, J.
Mennessier de la Lance II, p. 536; WorldCat (3 copies); this edition not in Podeschi. Rare first edition of the French translation of an early and important treatise on female equitation by Mrs. J. Stirling-Clarke. In the preface, which is included in both English and French, Stirling-Clark mentions she wrote the work because "although many books have been published which successfully impart a knowledge of riding to gentlemen, not one has appeared that can be regarded as a sufficiently comprehensive treatise for ladies, who are desirous of perfecting themselves in an accomplishment so peculiarly requiring, in their case, advise and instruction ."(introduction). She comments on the proper dress and horse for a lady, the position in a normal saddle and in a side-saddle, how to walk, trot and gallop, hunting and more. The chromolithographed plates show 4 stages of a trip on horseback: the departure, the walk, the step and the return. The illustrations in the text show among other things the proper position when sitting sideways. With a few minor stains, but otherwise in very good condition. Partly uncut and with most of the bolts unopened. [Attributes: First Edition]

Bakunin, Mikhail, Russian revolutionary anarchist, and founder of collectivist anarchism (1814-1876).
[London], 15. I. 1861. 8vo. 1 page. To an unnamed addressee: "Please excuse me for not coming today, but it was impossible for me, as I was already committed elsewhere. Even tomorrow I will not be able to see you, as I want to take advantage of an extraordinary opportunity to write to Russia. But the day after tomorrow I certainly want to see your home. Your unchanged, if older M. Bakunin" (transl. from the German original). - The arictocratic Russian anarchist, proponent of perpetual revolution, had escaped from Siberia to Japan in 1861, made his way from there to San Francisco, and then to London, where he began to renew his associations in revolutionary circles. A compelling if somewhat intemperate figure, Bakunin loathed Karl Marx and vigorously challenged his authority. This enmity led to Bakunin's expulsion from the International in 1872.

A rare Hungarian account of a tour through the Caribbean, Mexico, and Latin America, lavishly illustrated with lithographs. Pál Rosti (1830-74), a Hungarian naturalist and pioneering photographer in Latin America, visited the Americas between 1856 and 1858, retracing the steps of Alexander Humboldt. His experiences are recorded in this wonderfully illustrated account. Rosti's observations contain useful documentation on social history, natural sciences, and ethnology. His visit to Venezuela was the first photographic register of the country. Humboldt visited Rosti to see the first photograph taken of the Samán de Güere and exclaimed that the tree was the same as when he and Bonpland had seen it some sixty years earlier in 1800. Humboldt died a few days later. The plates include a scene in the Plaza de Armas in Havana, a fine view of Caracas, Venezuelans at rest in the rain forest, the small village of San Juan de los Morros, and bamboo plants in Trinidad. The third edition is also notable for the addition of the historical sketch in which Darwin acknowledges his predecessors in the general theory of evolution, which had already appeared in shorter form in the first German edition, as well as in the fourth American printing, both in 1860.

Adolphe, Marie-Alexandre.
Auguste Bry, Paris 1861. 33 x 24 cm (sheet size) Lithograph with full hand colour. The print shows the dancer in the ballet Marco Spada, which was performed at the Paris Opera in 1857. It was a splendid piece of French Second Empire nonsense, featuring bandits, kidnapped heroines, lovers' misunderstandings, a rejected suitor who in a fit of pique agrees to marry someone he doesn't love, and a bandit chief's daughter, freed to marry her lover when it transpires she was adopted. The subject was chosen because it provided two strong female roles for the Paris Opera Ballet's current stars, Carolina Rosati and Amalia Ferraris.
