Edition originale contenant un bel envoi signé du voyageur dauphinois. Promeneur infatigable, Raverat cherchait à recueillir un maximum d’informations avant que les choses ne disparaissent. Voice from Kentucky, A:
[Louisville:: Hanna & Co., Printers,. 1861]. 16pp. Caption title [as issued]. Stitched and disbound. Very Good. The first edition of this Appeal, reprinted four additional times in early 1861, "to lend your influence in staying the storm that is sweeping to ruin both our social fabric and our political existence." Sabin identifies the author, who signs at the end as "A Voice from Kentucky," as William Coleman. He writes from Louisville in January 1861, after the secession of "several States," with other States "on the eve of severing their connection with the Federal Government." He blames northern disregard of the Fugitive Slave Act, and treatment of southerners as moral pariahs, for the crisis. He seeks help from "Conservative Brethren of the rolling back the tide of Black Republican fanaticism." FIRST EDITION. LCP 637. Bartlett 160 [noting that there were five editions]. Sabin 1783a [not identifying edition]. Not in Coleman, Decker, Eberstadt, Nevins.

MILL, John Stuart (1806-1873)
London, Parker, Son, and Bourn 1861. . VIII,340,[4 cat.]p. Orig. embossed brown cloth, back lettered gilt, back somewhat darkened and at foot faint remains of a label, very light wear, brown endpapers, remains of removed bookplate to front paste-down, front hinge tender. Stamp on verso of title, mild foxing of prelims and last pages only. A very good copy. First edition. Mill's major contribution to political philosophy, interesting both for his general outlook on democratic representation as for his recommendations for particular aspects of its institutions. Mill considered representative goverment as the best form because 'the only government which can fully satisfy all the exigencies of the social state, is one in which the whole people participate; that any participation, even in the smallest public function, is useful; that the participation should everywhere be as great as the general degree of improvement of the community will allow; and that nothing less can be ultimately desirable, than the admission of all to a share in the sovereign power of the state'. Mill of course supported universal suffrage, including for women, and pleaded for proportional representation to protect the rights of minorities against an oppressive majority. *Einaudi has the French translation (3901) only. Dickens, Charles
London: Chapman & Hall, 1861. First Edition, Second Impression. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, second impression. (Stated "Second Edition" on all title pages. 344; 351; 344pp. Complete in three volumes. Contemporary leather with gilt ruling and lettering on spine. Bound without ads, quite likely as issued. Bibliographer Walter E. Smith describes printings two through five as indistinguishable except for their title pages, which may have been printed at the same time to give the impression of brisk sales. All had the same textual errors, etc.) Bindings edge-worn, leather starting to split along spine edges, hinges a bit tender, gilt barely legible. Internally Very Good with some light corner creasing, stray light stains and foxing. A very nice set of the classic novel.
