Michaelsen and Tillge, 1860. (Anonymous). Ghost-Thanks or the Grateful Unburied, a Mythic Tale in Its Oldest European Form [or] Sir Amadace, a Middle-North-English Metrical Romance of the Thirteenth Century. Reprinted from Two Texts, with an Introduction, by George Stephens . Cheapinghaven: Michaelsen and Tillge; (C. G. Iversens Boghandel), 1860. First edition of this text. Octavo, pp. [1-5] 6-11 [12-15] 16-74. The half-linen and moiré boards were probably added later to this book, present here in its original paper wraps issue -- a very fragile item -- with the added front cover hand-lettered in yellow, and added gray-green endpapers. Plentifully represented in UK libraries, but no holdings in the U.S. and scarce in trade. Scholarly marginalia (in pencil) scattered throughout. Boards quite worn at corners, spine panel perished but a sound, good copy nonetheless of a delicate book. #279. $150. This is the only known printed edition of this ballad, about a man who charitably pays the expense for the decent burial of a stranger, whose ghost subsequently does the man a signal -- and supernatural -- service. The editor notes the popularity of the plot in over a dozen works, from the apocryphal book of Tobit to Philip Massinger's play, "The Fatal Dowry." Presented in the original Middle English (a somewhat different dialect than Chaucer's but still fairly accessible to a reader of modern English) with the different texts from the two known manuscript sources printed side by side. Cocke, Philip St. George
1860. Autographed letter signed by Philip St. George Cocke and dated to January 30th, 1860. This letter is in manuscript, has four pages but only two are written on, and was folded multiple times. Letter measures 6 ¾" x 7". Letter is in very good condition with light soiling on verso, and light foxing on recto. This is a letter from Philip St. George Cocke to John Letcher, the Governor of Virginia from 1859 to 1863. Letcher was governor during the Civil War, and although he discouraged succession, it was under his administration that Virginia succeeded from the Union. In 1860, when this letter was written, Letcher had just taken office as governor. This letter from Cocke to Letcher references the "Armory Bill". This Bill was passed by the Virginia Assembly in January of 1860 in response to the Brown raid and was implemented to better defend the State. Around $320,000 was designated for rebuilding the state's armory and three Virginians were chosen by the governor to oversee operations. This "Amory Commission" included George Randolph, Francis Smith and, as this letter reveals, Philip St. George Cocke. Cocke gladly accepts the appointment and when writing to the governor he uses a tone of utmost respect. This letter was written on the brink of a chaotic time in United States history and documents correspondence between two important figures in Civil War history. .

ACUPUNCTURE CHARTS
A handsome and complete set of four woodblock-printed acupuncture charts, created in Japan for the medical profession. These are very rare and are based on various texts which were introduced into Japan from China in the beginning of the 17th century. The chief source for the woodcuts is Dou's Shinkan Kotei meido kyukyo [trans.: The Yellow Emperor's Canon of Moxibustion], published several times in Japan in the first half of the 17th century. It is a rare collection of dissertations on moxibustion and acupuncture. This work is a commentary and explanation of the Ling-shu, which "formed [along with the Su Wen] the theoretical basis of classical Chinese medicine…the Ling-shu…discusses mainly therapy - mostly centered on medicinal prescriptions, but also including physical therapies such as bonesetting and breathing exercises, and stimulation treatments such as acupuncture, moxibustion and massage."-Sugimoto & Swain, Science & Culture in Traditional Japan, p. 85. The charts were designed to be hung on walls for reference, each with names and locations of meridians printed at top: 1. "Gyojin meido no zu" [trans.: "Front View Human Profile 'Ming tang' Acupuncture Theory"]. Highlighted in yellow, brown, blue, and white. 2. "Sokujin meido no zu" [trans.: "Side View Human Profile 'Ming tang' Acupuncture Theory"]. Highlighted in yellow, brown, blue, and white, with names of the pressure points. 3. "Fukujin meido no zu" [trans.: "Back View Human Profile 'Ming tang' Acupuncture Theory"]. Highlighted in yellow, brown, blue, and white. 4. PRICE, Thomas Edward
Albumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 102 x 62 mm, verso with imprint of 'Photographed by Thomas E. Price, Taupo Quay, Wanganui.' The albumen print is in excellent condition (a couple of slight wrinkles in the sky area caused when it was originally laid down on the card, and a few scattered ink spots); the mount clean. An early New Zealand outdoor carte de visite showing a group of four women and three men posing on a croquet lawn. They are posed as if the game has just been completed, each holding a mallet. The focal point of the portrait is the beautiful young lady leaning forwards, third from left, whose dark eyes gaze challengingly into the camera. She has placed one of her feet, which protrudes from under her crinolines, defiantly atop two of the balls, her mallet raised as though she is about to strike them.

Scrapbook format, oblong, 37 x 24cm, 55 leaves, with clippings dating from the 1860's to maybe 1880- that's an estimate, since there are no dates on anything. The famous calendar stone is depicted as being still located on the cathedral wall, which was moved to the museum in 1885. The clippings are of architectural structures, political events and important political figures of that period. The clippings are in very good condition, as is the scrapbook itself.

Giotto | Explanatory Notice by John Ruskin
London: Arundel Society, 1860. Half Leather. An oblong elephant folio binding, with attractive plates taken from the Giotto frescoes in the Arena Chapel in Padua. The plates are sepia tinted with wide borders; there is foxing to the borders but the plates themselves appear clean. Despite the title page, this edition does not appear to contain Ruskin's explanatory text. There is some soiling to the endsheets and the hinges have been reinforced; some fade to the boards.
