One plate loose, with lower blank margin slightly soiled. A good, clean copy E.M. Forster's copy, with his bookplate "This book belongs to E.M. Forster." Forster has written on the front fly-leaf in ink: "In my mother's room. West Hackhurst. 1946." E.M. Forster spent forty years of his adult life living at his mother's house at West Hackhurst, Abinger Hammer. During the years 1925 to 1945, he lived with his mother, Alice Clare (Lily) in a house designed by his father, the architect "Eddie" Morgan, and previously occupied by his grandmother, Laura. Forster had to leave his home at West Hackhurst upon his mother's death in 1945, as the landlord refused to renew the lease.

Original gilt-lettered cloth, rebacked in three-quarter calf. New endsheets. Minute wear to extremities. First two leaves creased, titlepage creased with vertical repair through center, occasional marginal tears. Minute foxing, primarily on architectural plans, as usual. Save for the slightly stained image of H.L. Atherton's manse, the photo-lithographs remain clean and bright. Very good. In a cloth case, leather label. This book is the first large-scale use of photo-lithography in the United States, a medium which did not come into general use for another two decades. Its views are based on photographs made by A.A. Turner of large homes along the Hudson from upper Manhattan Island to Dobbs Ferry, mainly summer or pleasure homes of wealthy New Yorkers, and often exhibiting extravagant or playful architecture. The villas are remarkably lavish and some show considerable whimsy. Turner took the pictures in 1858 and 1859, and this lavish work appeared on the eve of the Civil War. All of the views have at least one additional color, and most have two (either brown or green, or both) applied by stencil, with the picture inside a gilt printed border. First published edition, 17 x 10.5cm (small 8vo), in publisher's dark blue criss-cross grain cloth boards re-backed in blue linen w/gilt ruling & title to spine, new head-bands & buff ep.s, a.e. untrimmed, [i-x], [1] 2-217 [218] pp. w/3-line Errata leaf to rear. Swinburne's 1st book, printed in 250 copies & ready for issue by late Oct. 1860. However, Swinburne reconsidered & asked Pickering to alter the title, & the book was finally issued in Jan. 1861 (ECB). This 1st trade edition retains the original half-title reading "The Queen Mother and Rosamond," adds title leaves before the 2 sections, & the Errata are reduced to 3 as indicated by the leaf at the rear. Pickering's edition can be determined by its blue cloth binding, while Moxon's is in green cloth. This is one of the very few copies that were sold before Moxon acquired the remaining sheets in 1865. Printed by Whittingham & Wilkins at the Chiswick Press, London. Binding Very Good (corner tips sl. bumped & worn); contents Very Good (3 short closed tears to half-title, 2 of which are mended w/archival tape).

        The Colored Fruit Book: For use of Nurseymen

      Rochester, N.Y.: D.M. Dewey, 1860. 4to., (11 2/8 x 9 inches). 64 chromolithographed and stencilled plates (many plates with expert repairs to verso and mounted on guards, some plates quite thumbed). Contemporary half black morocco, gilt, red morocco lettering-piece on the front cover, rebacked preserving the original spine, extremities worn). Provenance: with "H.H. Washburn" [?travelling seedsman] gilt stamped on the front cover; early pencilled ownership inscription on front free endpaper, and title-page. A travelling seedsman's custom-made sample catalogue assembled from stock plates, including examples produced by Dewey, but also plates lithographed for him by Kellogg of Rochester. "As Rochester's gardening flourished a local bookseller with an interest in the subject, D.M. Dewey, began to collect and publish coloured plates of fruit, flowers, shrubs, and fruit-bearing or purely ornamental trees. Selections of these plates sold by Dewey and others from the 1850s to the last decade of the century were usually bound into pocket-sized books about ten by six inches with stout leather covers, often stamped with the name of the nursery or the salesman offering the plants portrayed within. Dewey also recognised the wider appeal of the coloured plates described by Charles van Ravenswaay as 'an innovation in American popular art' ("A Nineteenth-Century Garden", 1977, page 20...). Their polychromic attractions were extended to a larger audience in small selections from a larger-sized series presented in decorative bindings, ... the earliest plates were simple watercolours, but later, as the demand grew, the technique of theorem paintings coloured with the help of stencils was used to multiply the number of copies as quickly and as cheaply as possible. Later still engraved or lithographed outlines were coloured by hand, and finally chromolithographs printed in colour began to replace more laborious procedures, though some of these were finished by hand too. Most of these processes involved the labour of teams of artists and colourists, one or two of whom went on to establish themselves as rivals to Dewey, though none achieved the same success" (Oak Spring Pomona 64). The first title "Pop-Gun," a signed presentation copy [in his florid hand, ending with an inimitable curlicue dripping from the last letter of his name] to J. F. Streatfield, Esq. [John Fremlyn Streatfield] "with the best regards, Feb. 20th 1860: " With armorial bookplate of latter on front pastedown. Napier's publication, HISTORY OF THE PENINSULAR WAR: "the excitement which followed the appearance of each volume is proved by the innumerable pamphlets issued by those who believe themselves to be attacked:" in this instance Cruikshank defends the British Volunteers. In the second title Cruikshank takes dead aim: "Questionable! --ay; so very questionable, in my opinion, is the fact of their coming at all, that I am now going to question whether they ever did, or can come."         Chapman's New Sectional Map of Wisconsin

      Milwaukee: S. Chapman; New York: McKenzie & Simmons; Chicago: Bamford & Baldwin, 1860 [Engraved and printed by L. Lipman, Practical Lithography, Milwaukee]. Folding pocket map, printed on two sheets joined, full period hand coloring, ornamental border. Folds into publisher's blindstamped cloth, title stamped in gilt on the upper cover. (Inked stamp on verso, short repaired tear). 33 1/2 x 29 1/2 inches. Scarce issue of Chapman's sectional map of Wisconsin depicting the entire state. First issued in 1853, with successive editions in 1855 and 1856, Chapman's pocket map of Wisconsin depicted the southern half of the state, the area surveyed at the time of the map's publication. In 1857, Chapman first issued a map depicting the entire state; i.e. using the lower half of his map from 1853 and attaching a second sheet depicting the upper half. New surveys, particularly in the northwest part of the territory, prompted this 1860 issue, with substantive changes to counties, railroads, etc. The addition of New York and Chicago publishers suggest that Chapman attempted to market this map to a wider audience. Unten links ausführlicher Text mit Anmerkungen zur Karte und zur Demarkationslinie mit Auflistung noch umstrittener Punkte der Grenzziehung. Der spanische General, Militär-Ingenieur, Geograph und Kartograph Francesco Requena y Herrera erbaute in Südamerika einige Festungen und öffentliche Gebäude. An der 4. Grenzziehung zwischen Spanien und Portugal in Südamerika war er durch seine Vermessungen für die spanische Seite maßgeblich beteiligt. Die auf der Grundlage seiner Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts durchgeführten Entdeckungsreisen entstandene Karte erschien erstmalig um 1860 bei Bourquin in Philadelphia im Druck.13 Segmente der Karte mit wenigen kleinen Wurmlöchern, 2 Segmente rückseitig als Deckel für die zusammengefaltete Karte durch violettfarbenen Karton verstärkt und das Kartensegment mit dem Titel rechts mit leichter Bräunung.Bedeutendes und für die Geschichte Südamerikas interessantes Zeitdokument, nur ganz wenige Exemplare können in Sammlungen oder im Handel nachgewiesen werden.

Hand-colored lithographed title and twenty hand-colored lithographed plates containing eighty-six humorous scenes with captions. Lithography by Ch. Fernique. Original quarter green pebble-cloth over green grained-paper boards with blindstamped decoration and gilt lettering. Of Amédée de Noé, ”known as Cham (that is, Ham, the son of Noah)…it was said that he had ‘an idea a day’ for Le charivari. A good proportion of his thousands of lithographs were gathered into albums. His contributions to the Album du siège (173), in which Daumier was his collaborator, are typical of his work” (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book, pp. 155-156).In the eight-nine years (since 1923) that ABPC has been recording auction results not a single copy of this work has fallen under the hammer. All albums by Cham are scarce; the volume under notice is extremely so.       London: Not published, 1860. Two page letter, written entirely in the hand of and signed by English architect and Civil Engineer Thomas Page. The letter reads "6 Hanover Square. 15 April 1860. My dear Mr. Cooke [E. W. Cooke, (1811-1880) English Painter and Botanist], I am ashamed of the delay in acknowledging your letter - your very witty + characteristic letter which I have just received back from E.W. Dallas [1809-1879]. I think - nay I am sure that your letter is the best part of the whole performance..." It continues in the same vein for another page and is signed boldly by page. Moderate discoloration from old adhesive along one edge. Page designed the embankment of Thames in 1842, and Westminster Bridge. Included is a 19th century engraving of the Thames Embankment.       London: John W. Parker and Son,, 1860. Octavo. Original purple cloth blocked in blind to spine and boards, brown coated endpapers, titles to spine gilt. Pencilled ownership inscription to front free endpaper, pencilled inscription to title, newspaper clipping tipped-in to rear pastedown. Cloth rubbed, contents shaken, some worn spots to joints and ends of spine, small spot to lower board, corners bumped, occasional spotting to contents, spine cracked in the gutter at several places, a good copy. First edition of this groundbreaking collection of theological essays, the first assault on Biblical literalism from within the ranks of British theologians. The edifice of literalism had been crumbling for several decades, under assault from the science of Lyell and Darwin and the new Biblical criticism of Baur and Strauss at the University of Tübingen. "But all these were outside the Church of England, and it was thus with a double force that Essays and Reviews, when it generally became known, struck clergy and laity. Not only did the book subscribe to the modern non-literal concept of the Bible text, but, far worse, the authors were with one exception beneficed clergy, and the majority came from the sanctuary of Oxford" (PMM 348). Two of the contributors, Rowland Williams and Henry Bristow Wilson, were found guilty by the Court of Arches, though the verdict was overturned by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, and in the long-term the Church came to accept much of what the essayists advocated. Rare, particularly in the original cloth.

Small, thick 8vo: iv,5-456pp, with portrait frontispiece of Whitman in first state (engraver's name given as 'Schoff;' printed in black with irregularly shaped light tan background) and protective tissue inserted before title page. Publisher's binding B (no priority established) terra-cotta cloth incised with vertical wavy grain, beveled covers with title and earth-and-clouds vignette (upper) and sunset-at-sea vignette (lower) stamped in blind, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, grayish tan end papers. A stunning copy, binding tight (spine ends lightly restored, slightly canted), frontispiece and tissue-guard spotted, else clean and fresh without foxing or stains. BAL 21397. Myerson A2.3.a1. Grolier American 100, 67. & "Leaves of Grass ultimately went through six entirely different editions, and each edition had multiple issues, often with different bindings, different paper size, different cover designs, and different configurations of content . . . [as Whitman] altered the arrangement and number of poems, shifted titles and typefaces, and kept Leaves of Grass a shifting series of quite different texts—each one responding to a particular biographical and cultural moment . . . Many of the previous poems had undergone extensive revision. For the first time, Whitman's "Calamus" poems appear, a cluster devoted to male-male affection, along with "Enfans d'Adam," later renamed "Children of Adam," a group of poems dealing with male-female attraction [Emerson tried to convince Whitman to remove the "Enfans d'Adam" poems, both because they were immoral and because they would hurt the book financially; Whitman refused.] . . . [S]permatic imagery (Whitman in his long first poem talks of how "a spirt of my own seminal wet" offers more to mankind than all the empty talk of philosophers and religious prophets about the universe) is everywhere through this volume, and so Whitman has redesigned his title page to turn the very letters of "Leaves of Grass" into sperm, adding the distinctive tails that had become familiar in medical textbooks of the time . . . For the first time the publisher's name appears prominently on the title page. . . . The book features a new frontispiece engraving of Whitman produced by S. A. Schoff (based on a painting by Charles Hine, which itself may have been based on a photograph of Whitman taken in the late 1850s), which sharply contrasts with the engraving used in the previous two editions of Leaves of Grass. The Schoff engraving gives us a more elegant and full-faced Whitman, presumably sitting, with shirt, jacket, and tie. Schoff's engraving appeared in three forms, because he was not finished with the engraving when the volume was ready for binding, so the various issues contain increasingly more finished states of the engraving. . . . One of the most striking features of this edition is that Whitman gives up the green binding that had seemed so appropriate for his title. He had the 1860 book bound in a number of different bindings—from yellowish brown to reddish orange to purple. This color change is significant. As the last antebellum edition of Leaves, this book appeared on the edge of the Civil War. . . . The color shift from green to dark red, burnt orange, or purple is one that Whitman would play on for the rest of his life, issuing some of his final books in both green and dark red covers, as if to suggest that his work (and all life) hover between green and red, nature and blood, spring and autumn, beginnings and endings." He was a clergyman and religious and temperance writer, was the son of Digby Joseph Stopford Ram, a Church of Ireland clergyman of Brookeville (Co. Cork), and Penelope Wallis of Renny (Co. Cork). He was descended from the Ramsford and Clonattin (Co. Wexford) branches of the Ram family and was a cousin of Revd Richard Sinclair Brooke. He received his education at St John's College, Cambridge, graduating BA in 1849 and MA in 1852. He was ordained in 1849 in Armagh and became minister at Tynan (Co. Armagh, 1849-51), after which he moved to England. He ministered at Elkstone (Staffs.,1841-54); Christ Church, Stratford (Essex, 1854-58); Pavenham (Beds.,1859), and was then vicar of Christ Church, Battersea (London). He was appointed associate secretary for the Irish Church Missions in 1858. His writings reflect the aims of this organization. He was author of The temperance movement, its importance and Christian character (London, 1856), and other tracts. He married in 1849 Eleanor Mary Hawkshaw (d. 1881), with whom he had nine children. This format has been long considered to be the first authorized edition, however some maintain that the 'first' authorized printing by Firth, Pond & Co. had no advertisements on the rear cover (see Fuld, Book of World Famous Music, and Dichter/Shapiro, Early American Sheet Music). Others have stated that the copyright date on the front cover of the 'first' authorized printing was originally and mistakenly shown as 1858 (see Christie's Sale 2011, Lot 23, 12 June 08). A complete suite of six large hand-coloured original lithographs by Gustave Doré. 45.5 by 61.4 cm, Each plate with the running title 'Corrida de Toros', individual captions in Spanish and French and with 'G. Doré del. A fine set with occasional evidence of age. FIRST ISSUE AND VERY RARE, A SUITE OF IMAGES ON BULL FIGHTING AS SEEN AND CHRONICLED BY GUSTAVE DORÉ. In Corrida de Toros, Doré captured the strength and movement of the bull, the tension, the danger in the ring - it almost seems as if the bull has a chance, not just at survival but of actually conquering the men on foot and horseback who are supremely annoying it to rage. Doré appears to sympathize with the bull and the tragedy of bullfighting rather than the glory of the fighters. ‘The French artist, Gustave Doré, was born in Strassburg in 1832. In 1848, he moved to Paris where it was noted that “his facility as a draughtsman was extraordinary.” He was a prolific worker whose talents and creations are greatly valued to the present day. Doré’s first illustrated story was published when he was only fifteen years old. His talent was evident even earlier, however. At age five he had been a prodigy troublemaker, playing pranks that were mature beyond his years. Seven years later, he began carving in cement. Subsequently, as a young man, he began work as a literary illustrator in Paris, winning commissions to depict scenes from books by Rabelais, Balzac, Milton and Dante. In 1853, Doré was asked to illustrate the works of Lord Byron. This commission was followed by additional work for British publishers, including a new illustrated English Bible. A decade later, he illustrated a French edition of Cervantes's Don Quixote, and his depictions of the knight and his squire, Sancho Panza, have become so famous that they have influenced subsequent readers, artists, and stage and film directors' ideas of the physical "look" of the two characters. Doré also illustrated an oversized edition of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven", an endeavor that earned him 30,000 francs from publisher Harper & Brothers in 1883. Doré's English Bible (1866) was a great success, and in 1867 Doré had a major exhibition of his work in London. This exhibition led to the foundation of the Doré Gallery in Covelant Bond Street. After an illness, he died in January of 1883.

A'Becket (1847-1904), son of Thomas A'Becket, Sr. (1808-1890), and brother of Thomas A'Becket, Jr. (1843-1918). His father, Thomas Sr., was an actor and musician who was active in Philadelphia in the 1840s and 1850s and throughout the United States in later years. His brother, Thomas Jr., was a musician who was a pianist and composer of music for piano. James A'Becket probably compiled this collection of theatrical tunes about 1860, when he was a teenager and his father was active as a performer in and manager of various Philadelphia theaters. In 1864 James served as a musician with the 196th Regiment of Pa. Volunteers, Company F. In 1868 he married Laura V. Middleton; he worked for most of his adult life as a grainer (someone who painted faux wood or marble grain). A rare and perhaps unique snapshot of popular theatrical music from the American stage of the mid-19th century. In Very Good Condition: cloth over spine is split; boards are slightly soiled; first 2 and last 2 leaves appear to have been glued along the edges to the boards, from which they have separated, leaving part of the first leaf and last attached to the adjacent board; faint dampstain along lower edges of a few leaves; otherwise clean and tight. &

With 12 chromoxylograph plates, 22 woodcuts, one folding map. 8vo, handsome contemporary binding of three-quarter navy calf and marbled boards, the spines with raised bands gilt ruled, the compartments decorated in blind, red morocco lettering label gilt, volume numbers gilt within compartments. xvii, 412; vii, 468. A handsome copy in period binding. Text blocks especially clean and well preserved. To this day, “ The Lake Regions” is considered one of Burton's very best books. Burton returned to Africa, after his expedition to Harrar, to undertake an exploration of the "then utterly unknown Lake regions of Central Africa." His stated intention was to correct certain geographical errors (of which there were many at that time) concerning Africa and to survey as fully as possible the resources of Central and intertropical Africa. But the real reason he wanted to venture into that unknown wilderness was to find the Jebel Kumri, the fabled "Mountains of the Moon," and to find the source of the Nile river. Burton and Speke first stopped at Zanzibar, then explored the coastal regions around Mombassa, and returned to Zanzibar, from whence they set out for Ujiji--about a thousand miles inland, on the shore of the relatively unknown Lake Tanganyika. It took seven and a half months to arrive, and when there they explored the lake ineffectually due to their wretched physical condition and the unwillingness of the natives and Arab traders to assist them. Upon the point of the direction of flow of a certain river attached to the lake--whether it flowed into, or out of, the lake--they received conflicting information from locals. They returned to Kazeh, two-hundred and sixty miles east, where they recovered somewhat their health, and Burton sent Speke alone to investigate a large lake that the Arab traders had said lay fifteen or sixteen marches to the north. Speke visited the lake briefly, obtained some vague information from the locals, and decided he had discovered the true source of the Nile, a decision that "would affect men's careers and lives and lead to his own death," as Edward Rice puts it (p. 310). After Speke's return from the side-trip, the expedition returned to Zanzibar. This expedition into Central Africa was perhaps the most taxing of Burton's career; his journey to the Holy Cities of Arabia was a cake-walk by comparison as far as physical harships were concerned; and the storm of geographical controversy that greeted him upon his return to London, where he found that Speke had published his erroneous conclusions and attached all the glory of the expedition to himself, left Burton "disgusted, desponding, and left behind in the spirit and in the flesh," according to his old friend, Alfred Bate Richards.

FIRST EDITION WITH AUTOGRAPH OF THE AUTHOR. THE WOMAN IN WHITE survives as one of the twin peaks of Wilkie Collins' achievement. It is "drenched in atmosphere," and on that atmosphere he relies for the "thrills and chills" that other writers of his school get through violent action. Outlined in early 1859, Collins began to write the novel around the middle of May. By August 15 he had completed the first installment of what has since been described as the "finest plot novel in the English language." The story began its remarkable career in "All the Year Round", the literary journal edited by the author's friend Charles Dickens.

The fine depiction of Sydney Harbour is very closely modelled on the view "Vooloo-mooloo au Port Jackson" which was published in the official account of La Place's grand voyage in La Favorite. This view had originally been drawn in Sydney by the voyage's artist Barthelemy Lauvergne, and was prepared for publication as an aquatint by Sainson."Nouveau Jeu de Loto..." is a particularly fine example of the deluxe nineteenth-century French children's games - beautiful and practical educational devices which made drawing-room geographical study a pleasure. The fine lithographs were printed by Engelmann and Graf, the company established by pioneering French lithographer Godefroy Engelmann.Scarce when complete and especially so when in such fine condition.

        Church and Conventual Arrangement With Copious References, A Complete Glossary and an Index - Extra Illustrated with Engravings, Architectural Plans and letters including one by the Bibliophile Thomas Phillipps

      Atchley and Co, London 1860 - pp 222, [2] [with elaborate extra illustration] A remarkable extra illustrated copy of Mackenzie Walcott's Church and Conventual Arrangement, with a lively four page letter from Sir Thomas Phillipps bound in along with two sixteenth century German woodcuts and a cornucopia of other manuscript and printed material relating to the Victorian passion for church restoration and architecture. The letter by Sir Thomas Phillips is written over four pages of a bifolium. Dating from 18 October 1841, addressed Middle Hill, in quick succession the hyper active collector asks his unnamed correspondent to allow him to subscribe to 'the repairs of the Round Church' in Cambridge, promising to order his bankers Drummond to make the arrangements 'for life'. Phillipps encloses (no longer present, alas) 'an extract from one of my MS. concerning the mode of ornamenting the Churches with Paintings about the end of the 12th Century', mentioning a private edition of twelve copies of this Latin manuscript which he had printed and asks for help with his research on county visitations, requesting details of his correspondent's 'Cambridge visitations' by 'County/ Date/ Size/ Date of Transcript/ from whose collection, or by whose gift to the College', requesting that 'If you have a Copy of my Index of visitations, I would only beg you to collate it with your Indexes and send me any new names of Pedigrees which are not inserted in mine.' Phillipps suggests that his enclosed twelfth century manuscript might be translated by someone with skill in 'the Latin of the darker ages'. The letter closes with a postscript about the imminent arrival at Middle Hill of the antiquary William Collings 'Lukis here tomorrow but Sir Henry [Dryden] I am sorry to say, cannot come. Lukis is getting a paper ready for you.' The book has been extra illustrated by two nineteenth century owners who have left a clear chain of ownership recorded in the book. A letter (tipped in) from the author to the editor of The Gentleman's Magazine, John Gough Nichols, records that it began as a review copy which then passed into the hands of the Suffolk antiquary Alfred W Morant whose signature is laid down by the next owner the bibliophile, Frederick Hendriks, whose 1893 bookplate appears on an endpaper. Hendriks has noted that: 'The five plans with which this volume is illustrated are by him [Morant] and he has added many interesting M.S. notes - all the other illustrations, views have been inserted by me - Fred[eric]k Hendriks.' A statistician and collector, Hendriks' books were sold at Sotheby's on November 12, 1909 (Lot 407, to Thorp). Later passing into Gloucestershire County Library who sold the book in the late 1990s; remains of library bookplates on the front endpapers and two stamps on the preliminaries. Hendriks had the book rebound in attractive half red morocco over cloth allowing the book to swell to about double its usual size. Apart from several dozen eighteenth and nineteenth century engravings and numerous minor manuscript items, insertions of note include a watercolour by the author of a liturgical procession. A very fine wall map of the state of Connecticut, based on the latest surveys During the 1850s, Richard Clark published a large number of wall maps based on actual survey of Connecticut towns and counties. Many of those had been the work of the distinguished Philadelphia surveyor, G. H. Hopkins, who was responsible for this accomplished general map. Each township in the state is individually coloured, and many schools, churches, cemeteries, post offices, stores, mines, mills, factories, iron works, etc., are located throughout rural Connecticut. Nine inset maps give detailed plans of the cities of Middletown, Waterbury, Stamford, Norwalk, New London, Bridgeport, Hartford, Norwich, and New Haven. A table gives population statistics for Connecticut's eight counties, and for the major towns and cities in each county. Grist mills and sawmills are shown, as are railroads and common roads. The mapping of the Connecticut coastline is especially fine, giving depths for the entire stretch of Long Island Sound, and showing several islands lying off the coast. This map is the second edition, the first having been printed in 1859, and is an excellent detailed look at Connecticut on the eve of the Civil War. Not in Phillips' America. Georg Hartung also met and corresponded with Charles Darwin and with Sir Charles Lyell, the pioneer of modern geology, from whom he received scientific samples. FINE CONTEMPORARY GREEN STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT, covers framed by multiple rules and wide, ornate dentelle, the whole enclosing a detailed Greek urn centerpiece, raised bands, spine densely gilt in compartments featuring many small botanical and floral tools, gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. With allegorical frontispiece featuring a portrait of Cats, 60 large tondo emblems, and 60 tailpieces by John Leighton and others after Adriaen van de Venne. Front flyleaf with ink presentation inscription, "Wilhelmina Colquhoun Jones / 1863 / with Charlotte Harriet Jones' / Love and best wishes" (see below). Spine darkened to an olive brown (as almost always with green morocco), just the faintest hint of wear to joints, occasional minor foxing or stains, but AN EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE COPY, the very decorative contemporary binding bright and scarcely worn, and the text very fresh and showing no signs of use. This is a beautifully bound, attractively illustrated, and very well-preserved copy of an uncommon Victorian book featuring emblems produced by the Dutchman Jacob Cats and the Scotsman Robert Farley in the 17th century. Each entry, devoted to a particular virtue, opens with a Cats emblem and closes with one by Farley, with numerous quote from philosophers and poets of all eras appearing between the two. A statesman of considerable importance, Cats (1577-1660) has long been considered Holland's household poet, having written a large quantity of insightful and charming philosophical verse, including some of the most important works of emblematic literature produced in the Netherlands. Farley (or Farlie) is an obscure figure known best for his "Lychnocausia," published with 58 full-page emblems in London in 1638. Leighton's interpretations of the illustrations by van der Venne (1589-1662) retain the charm of the originals, which include engravings with allegorical pictures and epigrams, sometimes freighted with mystical profundity, but also winning scenes of life, full of the fascinating detail of costume, architecture, furnishings, recreations, social intercourse of several kinds, and all the other varied physical and interpersonal dimensions of living. Former owner Wilhelmina Colquhoun Jones (1841-1910) likely received this as a wedding gift for her 1863 marriage to Edward Talbot Day Jones, apparently from a relative--perhaps a sister--of her new husband. Whoever Charlotte Jones may have been, she was important enough to the couple that they named their first daughter, who grew up to be the historian Helen Charlotte Foxcroft, for her. The especially handsome binding here is unsigned but is exactly the kind of thing Hayday was producing during its best days. For more on Leighton (1822-1912), see next entry.

Original purple bead-grained cloth, the covers blocked in blind with an elaborate border, expertly rebacked to style, the flat spines divided into five compartments by triple fillets in blind, lettered in gilt in the second, third and fourth compartments, cream endpapers. An important American work of ornithology by two of the foremost American ornithologists of the 19th century, beautifully illustrated with colour plates. The chief virtue of this spectacular contribution to the literature of American ornithology is that it completes the work started by the first octavo edition of John James Audubon's Birds of America (1840- 1844) and continued by John Cassin's IIlustrations of the Birds of California, Texas [etc.] (([1853]-56). As Baird notes in the preface: "the first series [of Cassin's work], containing fifty species not given by Audubon, was completed in 1855, and has not been extended, having been superceded by the present work" (Preface, p.I, Atlas vol.). "The present work is part of the General Report on North American birds ... published in October, 1858, as one of the series of "Reports of Explorations and Surveys of a Railroad Route to the Pacific Ocean." In this volume, however, will be found many important additions and corrections, including detailed lists of plates, ... descriptions of newly-discovered species, &c, not in the original edition. The Atlas contains one hundred plates, representing one hundred and forty-eight new or unfigured species of North American birds. Of these plates about fifty appear for the first time, having been prepared expressly for this work. The remainder form the ornithological illustrations of the Reports of the Pacific Railroad Survey [1858], and of the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey [1859] under Major Emory ... All have, however, been carefully retouched and lettered for this edition, and quite a number redrawn entirely from better and more characteristic specimens.
