        Oeuvres de Jean Racine

Paris - Ancienne Librairie Furne, 1860. Paris - Ancienne Librairie Furne, 1860 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The complete dramatic works of French playwright, Jean Racine. In French. Jean Racine (22 December 1639 21 April 1699), was a French dramatist, one of the three great playwrights of 17th-century France (along with Moliere and Corneille), and an important literary figure in the Western tradition. Racine was primarily a tragedian, producing such 'examples of neoclassical perfection' as Phedre, Andromaque, and Athalie, although he did write one comedy, Les Plaideurs, and a muted tragedy, Esther, for the young. Racine's plays displayed his mastery of the dodecasyllabic alexandrine; his verse is renowned for elegance, purity, speed, and fury, and for what Robert Lowell described as a 'diamond-edge', and the 'glory of its hard, electric rage'. Racine's works are widely considered to be untranslatable, although many eminent poets have attempted to do so. Louis-Simon Auger (29 December 1772 in Paris - 2 January 1829 in Paris) was a French journalist, literary critic and playwright. With a portrait of the author to frontispiece, and one further plate toillustrate each of the 12 plays. With numerous signatures to front blank and two more to verso of front free endpaper. Condition: In a half morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally, sound with slight wear to extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Many pages are unopened.         Merlin L'Enchanteur

Paris - Michel Levy Freres, 1860. Paris - Michel Levy Freres, 1860 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An unusual French historical novel about the mythical wizard Merlin. Edgar Quinet (February 17, 1803March 27, 1875) was a French historian and intellectual. In 1860, he published a unique volume, partly reflecting the style of Ahasverus, and entitled Merlin l'enchanteur (Merlin the Enchanter). In French. Merlin is a legendary figure best known as the wizard featured in the Arthurian legend. The standard depiction of the character first appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae, written c. 1136, and is based on an amalgamation of previous historical and legendary figures. Geoffrey combined existing stories of Myrddin Wyllt (Merlinus Caledonensis), a North Brythonic prophet and madman with no connection to King Arthur, with tales of the Romano-British war leader Ambrosius Aurelianus to form the composite figure he called Merlin Ambrosius (Welsh: Myrddin Emrys).         Filippo Strozzi

London - Chapman and Hall, 1860. London - Chapman and Hall, 1860 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of this history ofthe lifeof Florentine figure Filippo Strozzi. Trollope liked to think of himself first and foremost as a scholar and historian. A History of the Commonwealth of Florence (1865) served, at the time, as a valuable introduction to the subject. For Trollope, the city's past was made all the more vivid through his daily and hourly study of living Florentines (T. A. Trollope, 2, chap. 12), and his historical writing is at its best when dealing, not with broad themes, but with the individuals involved, as in Filippo Strozzi: a History of the Last Days of the Old Italian Liberty (1860). The idea of recounting Florence's history through the life, not of a famous man, but of one typical of his age, was unusual for its time. (ODNB)Condition: Rebound in half-calf. Externally smart, with just some light shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and mainly clean, with just the occasional spot. Overall: NEAR FINE..

The Lake Regions of Central Africa

London: Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts, 1860. London: Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts,, 1860. A Picture of Exploration. 2 volumes, octavo (221 x 137 mm). Original purple pebble-grain cloth, titles to spines gilt, ornamental panels to boards in blind, yellow endpapers. Volume I: 6 two-tint wood-engraved plates, one coloured folding map, 8 wood-engravings in text. Volume II: 6 two-tint wood-engraved plates, 14 wood-engravings in text. Spines faded and a little soiled, ends lightly bumped and rubbed, ghosts of library labels to tail, corners slightly worn. Volume I: fore edges of boards very lightly bumped, top half of rear board partially faded, small closed tear to margin of map. Volume II: minor wear to fore edge of front board, small light blue mark to bottom edge. An excellent set with tinted plates still bright. First edition, first impression, in the favoured first issue cloth. Burton's account of his expedition with J. H. Speke to explore the great lakes of central Africa, with the objective to locate the source of the Nile, an expedition Burton began planning almost immediately after returning from the Crimean War in February 1856. 'The Royal Geographical Society approved the project, the government granted £1000 and the East India Company gave Burton two years' leave on full pay' (Howgego). They arrived in Zanzibar in late December 1856, where the expedition was delayed for several months, which Burton used to prepare for the trek inland. In June 1857, they finally sailed for Kaole and from there headed east. After numerous months of arduous travelling and illness, the expedition discovered Lake Tanganyika in February 1858; later, Speke would discover Lake Victoria while Burton recuperated at Tabora. The return journey to Zanzibar and onwards to Aden was less pleasant, as Burton and Speke had 'grown tired of each other's company and Speke's discoveries to the north now strained the relationship' (Howgego). They returned to England separately, with Speke arriving in London on 8 May 1859, while Burton remained in Aden. When Burton arrived in London 13 days after Speke, 'he was dismayed to find that Speke had lectured before the Royal Geographical Society, had proposed another expedition to Africa, and was claiming by far the greater share of credit for his and Burton's accomplishments. Speke became the hero of the moment and continued to extol his own achievements in speech and print; Burton, though usually an avid controversialist, made no public attack against Speke for several months. Not until early 1860 did he set forth his position with the publication of The Lake Regions of Central Africa' (ODNB).

Les Danseuses de L'Opera: Costumes des Principaux Ballets

Les Modes Parisiennes, ca. 1860. Paris: Les Modes Parisiennes, ca. 1860. Alophe, Menut. Les Danseuses de L'Opera: Costumes des Principaux Ballets. Paris: Les Modes Parisiennes, [ca. 1860]. Quarto. Original green wrappers, glassine. Glassine frayed, wrappers chipped a little at spine. A stain of blue ink affects the gutter margin at the bottom, plates are not affected. Very slight foxing to a few plates. Complete with 14 lithographs, colored by hand. Included are beautiful depictions of Taglioni, Rosati, Ferraris, Zina Richard, Marquet , Fiocre, Cassegrain, Emarote, Emma Livry, Caroline Plunkett, Vibon, and Lefevre. Les Danseuses de L'Opera is considered to be among the most charming of 19th century ballet prints. An elegant simplicity infuses the portraits. The prints are carefully hand colored and some are heightened in gold. The portfolio was published by Les Modes Parisiennes, the foremost fashion publication of the time. The prints provide an excellent look at the ballet costumes of the time which were then greatly influenced by national and folk dress. The complete portfolio is rare. Marie-Alexander "Menuet" Alophe (1912-1863) was an important Parisian painter and lithographer who did numerous albums and portraits. While he was most at home illustrating the fashionable life of Paris, he also was commissioned to do portraits of the royal family. Toward the end of his career, he founded an important photographic studio (Benezit). References: DDM 43; Leslie, no. 7; Magrile, 188; Niles & Leslie I., 7.
