4Page Autographed Letter Signed by a Soldier in the 3rd U.S. Cavalry from Fort Wingate, New Mexico Territory, on Orders to go to Fort Whipple, Arizona Territory. March 26, 1870

4TLS. A fascinating letter from a soldier who complains that mail takes a month to get from Springfield, Ohio to this "God forsaken country". In just six months he was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Fort Wallace (Colorado), Fort Union (New Mexico Territory), Maxwell's ranch, and finally was being sent to Fort Whipple (Arizona Territory). From jointing the army in Cincinnati he moved from Forts in more civilized areas to those which were part of what was known as the "hostile Indian frontier" During the 1860's, the U.S. Army in New Mexico announced a war of extermination against the Apaches and Navahos. ;He writes specifically about his time in Fort Wingate where every night both the Utes and Apaches give out terrible yells while the soldiers all sleep on their carbines, revolvers, sabres and fully clothed ready to mount their horses in a moment's notice. He address his friend Moses signs only with his initials G.W.L.

Recent Practice in the Locomotive Engine

Glasgow.: Blackie and Son.. First Edition.. 1860.. A publication issued in ten parts; original paper wrappers 15 x 11 inches, each part with two folding plates 15 x 20.5 inches save No. 10 which has a third plate, 15 x 10.5 inches; total 21 plates. Eighty-four pages of text, including a section "Descriptions of Large Engravings." The string binding of No. 10 perished; in addition to the last 12 pages of text this number contains the Title Page, Preface, Table of Contents, List of Plates, List of Wood Engravings, Index, and Instructions to the Binder. Light foxing to plates; text generally clean with light toning. The text on the paper wraps reads: "Recent Practice in the Locomotive Engine: (Being a Supplement to 'Railway Machinery,' Comprising the Latest English Improvements, and a Treatise on the Locomotive Engines of the United States. Illustrated by a Series of Plates and Numerous Engravings on Wood." The 20 folding plates depict locomotives belonging to railroads in England, Scotland, Egypt and the United States. The titles for the US equipment are: "Wood-Burning Passenger Locomotive by Wm. Mason & Co. Taunton, Mass. U.S."; "Passenger Locomotive by Danforth, Cook & Co., Paterson, New Jersey, for the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Railroad, U.S."; "American Locomotives--Cross Sections. Baltimore & Ohio Railway"; "Freight Engine, by M. W. Baldwin & Co. Philadelphia, U.S." A single page plate titled "Illustrations of American Locomotives as Carriages" depicts, through profiles rendered in outline, 36 American locomotives with the object of creating an historical overview that begins with a locomotive from 1837. A note in the final volume advises: "The plates are numbered in continuation of the Series in the Author's work on Railway Machinery," which explains numeration from 31 through 50 for the twenty folding plates. A scarce first edition, in paper wraps as issued; overall good clean condition with faults noted. .

        Manuscript Herbarium, with Specimens

West Virginia, 1860. Hardcover. Fine. Half gilt-ruled morocco and marbled paper over boards; 200 x 260 mm; approx. pp. 200, handwritten throughout in black ink in tidy script, plus 87 flower specimens (and one page with 9 leaves) mounted direct to the recto. Boards scuffed; spine tips and corners chipped. Internally very pretty, and specimens are in excellent condition. The work of Fanny Evelyn Chilton, with her signature and "Gilboa, Aug. 17th --60" on the FFEP. Two more hands contribute a history of this volume, on the verso of the FFEP, which reads, in part: "It came into possession of her niece Eliza Quarrier Chilton, and in the year 1921 of her grand neice Lettie Fisher Lynn of [illegible], in the state of Washington." In another hand, "I, Lettie F. Lynn pass it on to Anne Brainerd Lynn, great great great niece of Fannie Evelyn Chilton... February 1937." With the exception of these historical notes, the entire volume is in Fanny's careful hand -- the first ten pages contain a short introduction, "botanical explanations," classes and orders, orders of plants, and poisonous plants -- then the specimens follow. Specimens are labelled with the Latin and common name, the class and order, plus notes about the specimen (sometimes something about its origin, its medicinal uses, flowering habit, or connected myths) -- and Fanny has scattered quotes and poems throughout, the majority in English, with just a few in French. Includes fuschia, salvia, helianthus, oak of Jerusalem, chrysanthemum, petunia, hawthorne, primrose, and many more.

        Alphabet Lottery Cards

Mexico: n.p., n.d. (1860's). Very good. Set of 24 lottery alphabet cards about 1½ by 3 inches, lithographed in black on white stock and mounted on stiff card. The 24 cards cover the entire Spanish alphabet, except for Rr, but are complete as issued. Each card shows a lithographed scene, sometimes attributed to Yriarte, beneath which is the letter of the alphabet, followed by a word beginning with that letter, then a humorous verse, sometimes with a play on words. The lotería is well known in Mexico, a game a bit like our Bingo but which uses cards with pictures and sayings instead of numbered balls. The players each have a card with some of the card images on them--the tabla--and they mark the drawn cards on the tabla with beans, coins or other markers. In the 1880's Don Clemente Gallo issued lottery cards in what have become more or less standard images. Earlier cards are unbelievably scarce. This set of 24 cards is complete. Even the last card shows a vendor of the uncut sheets bearing the 24 images with the caption: 'x et z estivale la geta segun dicen, lector, los colegiales Acabó el alfabeto, mas tus reales Espero sepultar en mi gareta' 'The alphabet is finished now, but your gold I hope to bury in my attic.' Lottery cards prior to the 1880s are scarce, and variants such as this alphabet set are downright rare. We have been able to find only one other set, in the Southwest Special Collections of the University of New Mexico, but no copies of the tabla with which they are associated. The possible Yriarte connection derives from the description in the University archive. Captioned in archaic Spanish.

The Lake Regions Of Central Africa A Picture Of Exploration

London: Longman, Green, Longman, And Roberts, 1860., 1860. 2 Volumes. 8vo. pp. xvi, [1 leaf], 412; vi, [1 leaf], 468 +24(ads). with half-titles. folding partly coloured map, 12 chromoxylographed plates (incl. 2 frontis.) & 22 wood engravings in the text. original orange-red cloth (bit soiled, library markings neatly removed from titles & lower spines, otherwise very good). First Edition, Second Issue. An account of Burton?'s 1856-59 expedition in company with John Hanning Speke to central east Africa in search of the the source of the Nile. Setting out from Zanzibar, the expedition endured incredible difficulties and hardships due in part to the untrustworthiness of their followers as to opposion from native tribes before arriving at Lake Tanganyika, the largest of the Central African lakes on February 14, 1858 almost eight months later. Following three months spent exploring the shores of the lake, the return journey was commenced and Speke was detached to verify reports of another lake to the northward, which he only sighted from a distance, and surmised to be the true source of the white Nile. This lake, the Victoria Nyanza, was later proven by Speke to be the source on a subsequent expedition in company with James Augustus Grant, but his surmise led to a bitter and celebrated feud with Burton. In the preface Burton dismisses Speke as being no more than a subordinate on the expedition, never having held the position of surveyor as he claimed upon his return to England. Penzer pp. 65-66. Hosken p. 34.. 1st Edition. Hardcover.

Autograph Letter Signed, to J. Hogarth

[England Frame: 37.5 x 39.6 cm; letter: 17.5 x 12.5 cm.. ca. 1860?] Manuscript letter from the critic and artist to publisher and art dealer Joseph Hogarth, starting out, "I have brought you back your Lewis's, with thanks for loan of them," and continuing with a discussion of the Ruskin etchings Hogarth "may have — any of them — whenever you like" although Ruskin will "neither raise nor lower" the prices. (The list of etchings described as being enclosed has not been preserved here, but => the letter makes it clear that Ruskin would really prefer to keep them if he can't "exchange [them] for Durers.") The presentation offers the letter framed and matted alongside the envelope portion reading "Mr. J. Hogarth [/] Haymarket [/] J. Ruskin" and a portrait of Ruskin taken from a D. Appleton & Company publication. Three items as described above, in 20th-century black wooden frame, frame lightly scuffed with mat clean and well cut; Ruskin items age-toned but otherwise unblemished.

        Memoire sur la fermentation alcoolique.

Paris: Victor Masson, 1860. First edition, unopened in original printed wrappers, of Pasteur s definitive proof that alcoholic fermentation is due to the action of a living organism (yeast), and is not a purely chemical process as most chemists since Lavoisier had believed. What did this memoir add to the first deductions Pasteur had drawn from lactic fermentation? He now asserted that he was dealing with a living microorganism. This was his most original contribution. Having been unable to create life or to change it by means of molecular asymmetry, he had set out to study its reproduction. In doing so he had come to a revolutionary definition: Fermentation is the act of reproduction of the living germs that constitute yeast (Debré, Louis Pasteur (1994), p. 105). In December 1857 Pasteur published the first in a series of abstracts, notes, and letters on alcoholic fermentation that culminated in a long and classic memoir of 1860 [the offered work]. Divided into two major sections, dealing respectively with the fate of sugar and of yeast in alcoholic fermentation, it inflicted on the chemical theory what Duclaux called a series of blows straight from the shoulder, delivered with agility and assurance. Pasteur established that alcoholic fermentation invariably produces not only carbonic acid and ethyl alcohol as was well known but also appreciable quantities of glycerin and succine acid as well as trace amounts of cellulose, fatty matters, and indeterminate products. On the basis of these results, Pasteur emphasized the complexity of alcoholic fermentation and attacked the tendency of chemists since Lavoisier to depict it as the simple conversion of sugar into carbonic acid and alcohol. If the alleged simplicity of the process had formerly been seen as evidence of its chemical nature, he argued, then its actual complexity ought now to be seen as evidence of its dependence on the activity of a living organism. In truth, the complexity of alcoholic fermentation was such as to prevent the writing of a complete equation for it, a fact which was only to be expected, since chemistry was too little advanced to hope to put into a rigorous equation a chemical act correlative with a vital phenomenon. However impressive this line of attack against the chemical theory, an even more decisive mode of argument derived from Pasteur s ability to produce yeast and alcoholic fermentation in a medium free of organic nitrogen. To a pure solution of cane sugar he added only an ammonium salt and the minerals obtained by incineration of yeast, then sprinkled in a trace of pure brewer s yeast. Although the experiment was difficult and not always successful, this method could produce an alcoholic fermentation accompanied by growth and reproduction in the yeast and the evolution of all the usual products. If any one constituent of this medium were eliminated, no alcoholic fermentation took place. Obviously, argued Pasteur, the yeast must grow and develop in this mineral medium by assimilating its nitrogen from the ammonium salt, its mineral constituents from the yeast ash, and its carbon from the sugar. In fact, it is precisely the capacity of yeast to assimilate combined carbon from sugar that explains why it can decompose sugar into carbonic acid and alcohol (DSB). Pp. 323-426 in Annales de chimie et de physique, Troisième Série, Tome LVIII, 1860. 8vo (226 x 142 mm), pp. 512. Original printed wrappers, uncut and unopened. Light crease and two small holes to front wrapper, else very fine.
