Notes on Nursing: What it is, and what it is not

London: Harrison, [1860].. FIRST EDITION, slim octavo (21 x 14cm), pp. 79; [1], imprint; [1], blank. With printed advertisement endpapers on glazed yellow paper, listing 'Burke's Peerage, 1860' and 'The Foreign Office List for 1860'. Printed note on title-page '[The right of Translation is reserved]'. Publisher's stipple-grained dark brown limp cloth, gilt titles to upper board. Internally clean but for a news-clipping offprint to preface (three loose clippings from 'The Scotsman' dated 1899, 1907 and 1908, and one from the Daily Mail dated 1910, still present), spine frayed at joint else a particularly fresh copy of this notoriously fragile reference book. A terribly complex book, bibliographically speaking; Victor Skretkowicz, who studied over 100 copies and found a vast array of variations in binding, end-paper shade and type setting, as well as textual differences, concludes that 'given the considerable number of different states of each inner and outer form in every sheet, the idea of attempting to establish with certainty any specific `issue' of `Notes on Nursing' beyond the first is utterly impractical (The Library, March 1993).

        CATALOGUE OF HAT LABELS

A Catalogue of Hat Labels. c. 1860 - 1900. 4to. 310 x 280mm. A scrapbook collection of over 250 original hatter's labels and stamps. The crude canvas covers are worn and the delicate thin paper internally is chipped and worn. The examples are numbered 1 - 228, then 200 - 272, most pasted onto the rectos only: there are a few gaps from obvious losses and some where there never appear to have been an example inserted. The numbering system suggests that there may have been an index at some time but this is not present; many can be identified from names or designs. Hatter's labels and stamps would have been pasted or stamped inside the hat, either by the hat mould maker or the finisher or milliner. This is and extensive collection of mostly late nineteenth century examples and appears to have been started by a member of the Vero family, hatters of Atherstone, Warwickshire from the mid-nineteenth century. There are a few examples from Vero and Everitt, but the vast majority from other makers in England, North and South America, Continental Europe and even a few examples from India and the far East.

        Signed Contract 1898

Austrian composer (1860-1911) and conductor, one of the leading of his generation. Rare contract signed in 1898 by him as Director of the Vienna Court Opera (a position he held for 10 years, starting in 1897). In this document, conditions are specified for Hermann Regel (1869-1934) for the choreography of the 1898 world premiere performances of "Die Rothen Schuhe", a ballet with music by Hungarian composer Raoul Mader (1856-1940). Mader was known for his vocal music, operettas and ballet, being this his most important work. "Die Rothen Schuhe" is based on Hans Christian Andersen´s fairy-tale of the same name, and was later converted into a successful ballet film in 1948. In two pages with page two on verso of page one, size is 8.25 x 13.5 inches, has some minor fold marks, in excellent condition. Mahler´s bold signature is on page 2, together with Hermann Regel´s.

Accuraat geografisch kaart-boekje of zak-atlas van het keyzerryk en geheel Duytsland, de Oostenrykse Nederlanden, Haarlem, Bernardus Cleynhens, [ca. 1747?]. Small 8vo (16 x 10 cm). With 25 double-page engraved maps (2 overview maps), and an engraved plate with 8 scales, all hand-coloured, partly in outline. Half textured red cloth (ca. 1860?).

      - Koeman I, Cle 1; STCN (2 copies); WorldCat (2 copies). A surprisingly rare pocket atlas illustrating the theatre of the "tegenwoordigen" (present) war, probably meaning the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748) but possibly the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The title-page notes that it is suited for officers, travellers and lovers of geography to carry in a pocket. The text (in Dutch) gives a geographic description only of "Duytsland" (Germany), including Austria, Bohemia and a few other areas, whereas the maps also cover the Low Countries, the English Channel, northwest France and to the east as far as Warsaw, Krakow and Belgrade. The 23 detail maps were designed so that they could be assembled with the key map to make a single wall map, whose cartographic image would measure 53 x 90 cm.With a contemporary owner's, bookplate, embossed stamp and library labels. With the text leaves somewhat browned, not affecting the maps or the plate with scales, and the first 2 leaves slightly worn, but generally in good condition. A rare pocket atlas from the War of the Spanish Succession.

Tipograpfía de Nabor Chavez, Mexico City 1860 - 8vo, 21.5 x 14.5 cm, pp [2], [1-5] 6-74, [2], [34 (11 pieces of music)] and 6 hand-colored lithograph plates. First edition of the first Mexican dance instruction book. The origen of this work is treated in four letters included in the prefatory material, dating from 1858. In these letters it is stated that the purpose of the book was to entice the youth of Mexico away form such activities such as gambling, into the more wholesome activity of dancing, and mentions that there was no dance instruction book available for them: it is to that lack that Sr. Ibarra has composed his book. After a brief introduction, he quickly goes over the basic dancing steps. He then discusses dances meant for two persons (El Wals, La Polka, El Scotish, etc.), noting with some satisfaction that he and Eduardo Gavira invented the dance called "La Camelina." The discussion then proceeds to dances performed by four or more pairs (Mazurca de Tertulia, Cuadrillas Francesas, etc.) and concludes with a section on historical quadrilles, all of which fall under the major title of "La Guerra de Rusia," referring to Napoleon's invasion of same. The book concludes with the six plates, to which the text is keyed, and the eleven pieces of piano-forte music, the longest one of which also concerns the Russian War. Of the six plates, the first two demonstrate dance steps; plate 3 shows Le Wals; 4 shows contradanza (square dancing); 5 shows danza habanera (Habana-style); and 6 shows polka. Significantly all the pieces of music in it are new and by Mexican composers. The pieces entitled "La Camelina" and "Polka Camelina," both inspired by Dumas fils’ La Dame aux camélias. Ibarra also gives the history of each dance and when it was introduced into Mexico. Dancing was frowned upon by the Church, which explains perhaps the late appearance of this, the first book on dance in Mexico. It was not till Maximilian and the French invasion that the country opened up to dance and theater. Little is known about Ibarra. Very rare: one copy on OCLC, in the Biblioteca Nacional of Mexico, and only one of the second, in the same library; only 1 copy at auction on record, viz. this one. Original black half sheep over decorative cloth blind stamped on upper cover, spine gilt-lettered and decorated, original blue and brown marbled endpapers. Small snag in spine (no loss), lightly rubbed, fore edges of upper board moderately eroded, lower fore edge chipped, corners bumped. Some leaves lightly browned, but otherwise interior, including plates, is fine. An excellent, complete copy of a significant book. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Notes on Nursing: what it is, and what it is not

London: Harrison, bookseller to the Queen,, [1860]. Octavo. Original dark brown pebbled cloth, front cover lettered in gilt, blind-stamped ruling to covers, yellow advertisement endpapers. Short split down top of spine, text block sound, creasing to spine ends, few light spots to rear cover, a little bit of wear to extremities. An excellent copy. First edition, second issue. The first issue does not have the notice "[The right of translation is reserved]" at the base of the title page and has plain yellow endpapers. An autograph letter from Nightingale to the artist Gaetano Meo, artists model and painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelites, is bound in at the rear, dated 21 January 1887. Nightingale expresses her relief that "your son Rocco is sufficiently recovered to be moved from Brighton" and discusses arrangements for his transfer to Queen Square Hospital in London. Published six months before the opening of the Nightingale School at St Thomas's Hospital in London in June 1860, this work was not intended to be a textbook per se but as a book of hints for those nursing in the hospital ward and in the domestic sick room. Nightingale provides practical descriptions of the nurse's duties in supplying her patient's needs, and "indicated a new and more responsible role for nurses, one that required proper training and medical knowledge."         Speech of Abraham Lincoln of Illinois, Delivered at the Cooper Institute, Monday, Feb. 27, 1860 [Cooper Union Address]. WITH: Carte-de-Visite of the Mathew Brady "Cooper Union" photograph

New York Tribune, New York 1860 - FIRST EDITION of Lincoln's historic Cooper Union Address, delivered on February 27, 1860 at the Cooper Institute in Brooklyn, New York. The speech is largely credited to having launched Lincoln's Presidential bid. With silver print carte-de-visite of the Brady "Cooper Union" photograph. In the fall of 1859, James A. Briggs, who served on the lecture committee of the Plymouth Church in Brooklyn, invited presidential candidate hopeful Abraham Lincoln to speak to a New York audience on any subject of his choosing. Lincoln accepted the invitation, choosing to speak of the current political climate in America. William O. Stoddard, an Illinois journalist who worked for President Lincoln during his administration, noted that "No previous effort of his life cost him so much hard work as did that Cooper Institute speech" and that the resulting speech "was a masterly review of the history of the slavery question from the foundation of the government, with a clear, bold, statesmanlike presentation of the then present attitude of parties and of sections. It exhibited a careful research, a thorough knowledge and understanding of political movements and developments, that staggered even the most laborious and painstaking students. It showed a grasp, a breadth, a mental training, and a depth of penetration which compelled the admiration of critical scholars" (Stoddard, Abraham Lincoln: The True Story of a Great Life). "Horace Greeley had rushed out the speech in pamphlet form as 'Tribune Tract' Number 4, under the headline: National Politics. Speech of Abraham Lincoln, of Illinois, Delivered at the Cooper Institute, Monday Feb. 27, 1860. The pamphlet was ready March 6, while Lincoln was still traveling through Connecticut. When he returned to New York, he found it already available to the public. "Greeley marketed the eleven-page Tribune edition aggressively? As a bonus, the publication included Wisconsin Republican senator James Doolittle's February 24 speech attaching 'the new doctrine of judicial infallibility,' as did Lincoln's address at Cooper Union just three days later, and also, like Cooper Union, railing agains 'the headstrong zeal pursued by the other party to force slavery into Territories'? "It was as if Republicans were now speaking with one voice: identifying with the founders, attacking the Dred Scott decision, rebuking John Brown, and drawing their own 'dividing line' on slavery extension. Lincoln did not say it alone; but he said it best? 'Mr. Lincoln's is probably the most systematic and complete defense yet made of the Republican position with regard to Slavery,' the Tribune declared in its initial advertisement for the reprints. 'We believe no speech has yet been made better calculated to win the intelligent minds over to our standard. Will the friends of the Cause everywhere aid us to circulate it?' "The answer was yes. The Tribune Tract edition proved enormously popular, going through at least five additional editions? [Lincoln's] New York oration was enjoying a new and sustained life in pamphlet form, and was being purchased, individually, and in bulk alike, by admirers and groups across the North. "The Cooper Union address tested whether Lincoln's appeal could extend from the podium to the page, and from the rollicking campaigns of the rural West to the urban East? Cooper Union held the promise of transforming Lincoln from a regional phenomenon to a national figure. Lincoln knew it, and rose to the occasion. "As if to illustrate his metamorphosis, the Cooper Union appearance also inspired the most important single visual record on Lincoln's, or perhaps any, American presidential campaign: an image-transfiguring Mathew Brady photograph. Its later proliferation and reproduction in prints, medallions, broadsides, and banners perhaps did as much to create a 'new' Abraham Lincoln as did the Cooper Union address itself. "Supposedly, Lincoln volunteered when he encountered the famous photographer again a few months later: ' [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
