Anene Aiabai Kristian Ni Karaoiroa Iehova, "A Na Karaoiroiko, Te Antu, Aomata; A Na Bane Ni Karaoiroiko Aomata"

Content is in the Gilbertese (Kiribati) language, printed in the Republic of Kiribati, formerly known as the Gilbert Islands, located in the central Pacific. The island were until the second half of the 20th century a British domain. This pamphlet is the first hymnbook printed in the Gilbertese language. Hiram Bingham II, a protestant missionary to the Hawaii and Gilbert Islands, is credited with the first translation of the Bible into the Gilbertese language around 1857. The location of publication, Abaian, is likely referring to the island "Abaiang," located in the northern part of the Kiribati Islands, where Bingham first arrived. A rare imprint with only six copies found in institutions, all of which appear to be microfilms of the later edition, rather than the original edition.

An attractive and skillfully executed drawing heightened with watercolour. Two Chinese figures carrying baskets have been sketched in the foreground but have not been finished.         Charles Sumner Calls for a Zone of Freedom to Contain and Transform the Slave States

Boston 1860 - Autograph Quotation Signed, from a speech given at the Cooper Institute in New York City on July 11, 1860, "The Republican Party; Its Origin, Necessity and Permanence." Boston, July 25, 1860. 1 p., 5 x 8 in. Complete Transcript-or, better still, joining hands together, the new States shall become as a zone of Freedom about the slave States, -radiant, like the ancient cestus of Beauty,[1] with transforming power.Charles SumnerBoston 25th July '60.Historical BackgroundAfter being savagely beaten on the Senate floor, Charles Sumner was finally able to return to the Senate three years later, in 1859. His first speech following his return was "The Barbarism of Slavery," delivered on June 4, 1860. Five weeks later, he spoke to a meeting of the Young Men's Republican Union of New York.Four and a half months earlier, Republican Presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln had spoken at the same place in his famous Cooper Union speech that launched him into national prominence. In Chicago, the Republican Party had selected Lincoln as its presidential nominee, and the 1860 presidential campaign began in earnest.Sumner's July 11 speech was widely circulated in the Tribune, Times, Herald, and World, along with a pamphlet edition of more than fifty thousand copies. Senator William H. Seward wrote to Sumner, "Your speech, in every part, is noble and great. Even you never spoke so well." This document is a quotation, written and signed for an admirer, from near the end of Sumner's fiery speech delivered two weeks earlier. It forms the end of the penultimate paragraph, after which Sumner urged all to "press forward in the work with heart and soul," and ended with a quotation from Alexander Pope's 1711 poem, An Essay on Criticism.Complete text of "The Republican Party: Its Origin, Necessity, and Permanence."Charles Sumner (1811-1874) was born in Boston and graduated from Harvard College in 1830 and from Harvard Law School in 1834. Admitted to the bar in 1834, he joined a private practice in Boston. From 1837 to 1840, he traveled in Europe and became fluent in French, Spanish, German, and Italian. He met many of the leading statesmen of Europe and determined to be an abolitionist when he returned to America. He became a popular orator for formal occasions, spoke against slavery and the Mexican War, and worked with Horace Mann to improve public education. In 1848, he helped organize the Free Soil Party, and in 1851, Democrats gained control of the Massachusetts state legislature in coalition with Free Soilers. The legislature elected Sumner to the U.S. Senate, where he served from 1851 to 1874, initially as a Free Soiler and later as a Republican. He became a leader of the opponents of slavery in Congress. When Sumner mocked pro-slavery Senator Andrew Butler of South Carolina in 1856, Butler's cousin Representative Preston Brooks retaliated by beating Sumner into unconsciousness on the Senate floor. While Brooks became a hero in the South, most northerners were outraged at the assault on free speech. Sumner traveled to Europe twice to recuperate and did not return permanently to the Senate until 1859. During the Civil War, Sumner was a member of the Radical Republicans, who pressured President Abraham Lincoln to issue an emancipation decree. Sumner served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, from which he orchestrated U.S. recognition of Haiti in 1862. After the Civil War, Sumner was instrumental in the impeachment proceedings against President Andrew Johnson.ConditionSmall "Delarue & Co. London" blindstamp at head.         Notes on Nursing: What it is, and what it is not

London: Harrison, [1860].. FIRST EDITION, slim octavo (21 x 14cm), pp. 79; [1], imprint; [1], blank. With printed advertisement endpapers on glazed yellow paper, listing 'Burke's Peerage, 1860' and 'The Foreign Office List for 1860'. Printed note on title-page '[The right of Translation is reserved]'. Publisher's stipple-grained dark brown limp cloth, gilt titles to upper board. Internally clean but for a news-clipping offprint to preface (three loose clippings from 'The Scotsman' dated 1899, 1907 and 1908, and one from the Daily Mail dated 1910, still present), spine frayed at joint else a particularly fresh copy of this notoriously fragile reference book. A terribly complex book, bibliographically speaking; Victor Skretkowicz, who studied over 100 copies and found a vast array of variations in binding, end-paper shade and type setting, as well as textual differences, concludes that 'given the considerable number of different states of each inner and outer form in every sheet, the idea of attempting to establish with certainty any specific `issue' of `Notes on Nursing' beyond the first is utterly impractical (The Library, March 1993).

        CATALOGUE OF HAT LABELS

A Catalogue of Hat Labels. c. 1860 - 1900. 4to. 310 x 280mm. A scrapbook collection of over 250 original hatter's labels and stamps. The crude canvas covers are worn and the delicate thin paper internally is chipped and worn. The examples are numbered 1 - 228, then 200 - 272, most pasted onto the rectos only: there are a few gaps from obvious losses and some where there never appear to have been an example inserted. The numbering system suggests that there may have been an index at some time but this is not present; many can be identified from names or designs. Hatter's labels and stamps would have been pasted or stamped inside the hat, either by the hat mould maker or the finisher or milliner. This is and extensive collection of mostly late nineteenth century examples and appears to have been started by a member of the Vero family, hatters of Atherstone, Warwickshire from the mid-nineteenth century. There are a few examples from Vero and Everitt, but the vast majority from other makers in England, North and South America, Continental Europe and even a few examples from India and the far East.
