        NARRATIVE OF THE CANADIAN RED RIVER EXPLORING EXPEDITION OF 1857 AND OF THE ASSINNIBOINE AND SASKATCHEWAN EXPLORING EXPEDITION OF 1858

      London: Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts, 1860. Two volumes. xx,494; xvi,472pp. plus seven maps (two folding) and folding profile, all partially colored; and twenty plates, fifteen of them colored. Antique half calf and marbled boards, leather label. Light soiling to text, a few plates in first volume lightly dampstained, one plate in second volume with a closed tear at top edge. A good copy. The expedition started from Toronto in order to ascertain the practicability of an emigrant route between Lake Superior and the Selkirk settlement, and to establish a new colony at Lake Winnepeg. During the course of his travels, Hind lived almost continuously among the Chippewa. He gives a good account of their customs and manners, with notes on their language. The magnificent plates were executed by Spottiswoode & Company, after sketches made by Fleming or photographs taken by H.L. Hime. The expedition added greatly to the knowledge of the region and facilitated the movement of prospectors to the gold fields of British Columbia. It also contributed data toward the establishment of a railroad route to the West. WAGNER-CAMP 360. FIELD 699. ABBEY 630. STREETER SALE 3730. PEEL 221. GRAFF 1892. PILLING, PROOF-SHEETS 1800.

        Lieut-General Sir James Outram's Campaign in India, 1857?1858;

      London: printed for private circulation only, by Smith, Elder and Co., , 1860 . comprising General Orders and Despatches relating to the Defence and Relief of the Lucknow Garrison, and Capture of the City, by the British Forces; also Correspondence relating to the Relief, up to the Date when that Object was effected by Sir Colin Campbell. Octavo. Original red-brown pebble-grain cloth, gilt-lettered spine refurbished and relined, covers panel-stamped with blind borders and floral centrepieces, red sprinkled edges, brown coated endpapers. Ownership inscription of William Simpson (dated 1864) to p. iii, and his bookplate to the front pastedown above the contemporary bookseller's ticket of Myers & Co.; blind-stamp of Aberdeen University Library to front cover. Light toning, a few trivial spots. A very good copy. First UK edition, greatly improved and expanded from the unprocurable Calcutta edition of 1858, and "printed for presentation to personal friends of Sir James Outram, who begs that it may be regarded as a private communication, and not a publication" (title page). It remains uncommon: five copies traced in British and Irish institutional libraries (Aberdeen, British Library, Leeds, National Library of Scotland and Oxford), OCLC adding a dozen world-wide. After the relief of Lucknow Outram was prevailed upon by his colleagues and subordinates to produce a digest of "authoritative statements regarding the recent campaign" (preface). In the original Calcutta printing "the Despatches and other documents were given, without reference to the chronological order of the events they described ? [and without] his Correspondence, both epistolary and telegraphic, which he had maintained during the recent stirring events" (preface). It survives in three copies in libraries world-wide (British Library, London Library, and University of Minnesota), and is untraced in commerce. Outram was the resident at Lucknow from 1854 to 1856, when he became commissioner at Oudh. Shortly before the Mutiny he was appointed commander in the Anglo-Persian War. He returned to Bombay in June 1857, "reached Calcutta on 31 July, and on 8 August was given command of two divisions of the Bengal army occupying the country from Calcutta to Cawnpore inclusive, while he was also made chief commissioner of Oudh in succession to Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence, killed in the defence of Lucknow. He took with him Robert Napier as his military secretary and chief of staff, and arrived at Dinapore on 19 August. On 1 September he was at Allahabad, and on 15 September he reached Cawnpore" (ODNB). From there he advanced with Havelock to Lucknow, graciously subordinating himself and accompanying Havelock only in his civil capacity as commissioner. Havelock's death left Outram to hold the Alambagh position until reinforced by Colin Campbell in March 1858. "The kaisarbagh fell to Sir Colin Campbell on the morning of 14 March. On 16 March Outram, having recrossed the Gumti, advanced through the Chattar Manzil and carried the residency. On the morning of 19 March Outram attacked the Musabagh, held by 5000 men and thirteen guns, and carried it, capturing twelve guns. So ended the capture of Lucknow" (idem). He was then made military member in the governor-general's council, and retired to England in 1860.

        Advertising exotic ‘lapdogs’ - a menagerie for Ladies?). Heute . zu sehen der kleinste Hirsch der Welt 6 Zoll gross 8 Jahre alt der Liebling und Schosshündchen der Damen von Java, das seltene noch nie hier gezeigte Moschus-Reh (aus Tibet), zwei der kleinsten und reizendsten 8 Zoll grosse Nachtigall-Aeffchen das Spielzeug der Damen in Brasilien. Diese so seltenen Thierchen werden nicht in einem Käfig gezeigt, sondern produciren sich frei und offen auf einem 20 Fuss langen Billard und werden von einer jungen Indianerin vorgeführt. Machen den spanischen Tritt, springen durchs Reifchen, über die Gerte etc. etc.

      Frankfurt, J. G. Müller, s.d. (1860). - Typographic hand bill with xylographic bordure. Size: 13.5 x 9 inches. Minorily browned, but a fine copy. Very rare hand bill for a small and almost unknown menagerie, of which I only could find tiny advertisements in Bavarian periodicals from the years 1859/60. They mainly advertised the exhibition of well grown or particularly tall horses, in connection with the sale of exotic animals (monkeys, parrots and Asian cats). This hand bill though advertises the public exhibition of quite the opposite and appears to have been directed to a female audience, that would enter the Frankfurt autumnal fair : It would show the "smallest deer of the world – 6 inches tall and 8 years old, the darling and lap dog of the ladies of Java", "the rare and never shown musk deer (from Tibet)", and "two of the smallest and cutest nightingale monkeys of only 8 inches – the favourite toy of the ladies of Brazil". Stieglitz claims that none of his animals would be presented in a cage, but instead would freely show some tricks on a table under the guidance of a young Indian lady. 1001 g

        Les Paradis Artificiels- Opium Et Haschisch

      - Paris, Poulet-Malassis et De Broise, libraires-éditeurs, 9, rue des Beaux-arts, 1860 ( Alençon - Typ. De Poulet-Malassis et De Broise ) - Reliure In-octavo ( 198 x 135 mm) demi chagrin noire, plats en papier à la cuve raciné , dos à quatre faux-nerfs, fleuron doré ornant les caissons et titrage au petit fer, contre plats marbrés vert au veinules blanches, 5 feuillets composant la garde et IV feuillets fins dédiés à la mystérieuse G. J. F* , 304p-3f, ( 107 pages pour Le poème du Haschische ) non rogné, les feuillet 269 et 271 sont déchirés très solidairement en haut de page sur 1 cm, la reliure par elle même est frottée en bord de tête sur la tranche de titre , les plats sont élimés et arrondis, impact et léger creux de cinq mm sur le premier plat, ( voir clichés ), la pagination est exempt de rousseur. C'est, in fine un exemplaire peu flamboyant dans sa reliure, mais en bonne condition et de belle fraîcheur intérieure. * Vraissemblablement l'auteur lui-même, par un savant jeu de miroir. A vingt deux ans , avec le Club des Haschischins, Baudelaire goûtait à l’Opium, et c’est à ces souvenirs qu’est consacrée la première partie du livre. La seconde, «Un mangeur d'opium» , célèbre les voluptés de ce stupéfiant, évoquées à travers l'étude des Confessions de Thomas de Quincey dont il reprend la formule anglaise opium-eater. Il ne s'agit pas d'une adaptation mais d'une oeuvre originale, malgré les nombreuses citations qui s'amalgament à la pensée de Baudelaire. Il fut si satisfait de l'ouvrage que, parlant d'une éventuelle réédition avec Michel Lévy, il dira : "Rien à remanier, le livre est très bien comme il est.". Carteret I, 126-127.       London: John Murray,, 1860. of the Countries Visited During the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle Round the World. Under the Command of Capt. Fitz Roy. Tenth Thousand. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt, boards blocked in blind, brown coated endpapers. Engravings in the text. Front hinge partly split but holding, text block sound, light foxing to contents; an excellent copy in exceptionally bright cloth. Second edition, and the final definitive text. The Journal of Researches was first published as volume III of Fitzroy's Narrative of the surveying voyages of His Majesty's Ships Adventure and Beagle in 1839, and also issued as an independent volume at the same time. The second edition, extensively revised and reduced from about 224,000 words to 213,000, was first published in 1845 in the scarlet cloth of John Murray's Colonial and Home Library. It was reprinted in the same series in 1852, stated on the title page as a new edition, instead of second, although no changes had been made. The present edition is the next issue of the same second edition, and is the final text as Darwin left it. The parts from the original stereos are the same, but a postscript, dated 1 February 1860, is added to the preliminaries, and it is issued for the first time in a green cloth case of the same style as the first three editions of the Origin. "The page height is nearly two centimetres greater than before and the wider margins give the book a much better appearance." Darwin noted in his autobiography that "the voyage of the Beagle has been by far the most important event in my life and has determined my whole career?As far as I can judge of myself I worked to the utmost during the voyage from the mere pleasure of investigation, and from my strong desire to add a few facts to the great mass of facts in natural science. But I was also ambitious to take a fair place among scientific men?The success of this my first literary child always tickles my vanity more than that of any other books."

      1860. "His Execution, In the Sight of Hundreds of Vessels, Was in the Best Maritime Tradition" [Trial]. Hicks, Albert W. [c.1820-1860], Defendant. Fowler, L[orenzo] N[iles] [1811-1896]. The Life, Trial, Confession and Execution of Albert W. Hicks, The Pirate and Murderer, Executed on Bedloe's Island, New York Bay, On the 13th of July, 1860, For the Murder of Capt. Burr, Smith and Oliver Watts, On Board the Oyster Sloop E.A. Johnson. Containing the History of His Life (Written by Himself) From Childhood up to the Time of His Arrest. With a Full Account of His Piracies, Murders, Mutinies, High-Way Robberies, Etc. Comprising the Particulars of Nearly One Hundred Murders! To Which is Added the Account of His Arrest, Imprisonment, Trial and Execution: Also, His Phrenological Character, As Described by L.N. Fowler. New York: Robert M. De Witt, [1860]. [vi], [7]-84 pp. 8 plates of woodcuts. Verso of front wrapper and rear wrapper have publisher advertisements. Octavo (9-1/2" x 6"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in pictorial wrappers, untrimmed edges. Light soiling, some edgewear to wrappers, which are partially detached, spine worn away at ends, binding slightly cocked. Moderate toning to text, internally clean. * Only edition, one of two issues, the other with 68 pp. "Hicks was a triple murderer, but only technically a pirate. He was a member of the crew of an oyster sloop, and he chopped up the captain and two crew members in lower New York Bay, but being in the ebb and flow of the tide, it was technically a crime on the high seas and a federal offense. The little money he took got him to Providence, where he was caught. His execution in New York Harbor, in the sight of hundreds of vessels, was in the best maritime tradition (McDade). A notable feature of this account is the "psychological" profile by Fowler, the notable phrenologist, based on a post-mortem study of Hicks's skull and digestive organs. OCLC locates 10 copies in North American law libraries. McDade, The Annals of Murder 473.

        Western Australia During Convict Era

      Perth, Western Australia, circa 1860-1863. Five (5) Original colonial photographs of Perth and environs, including a rare view of the Government House in its formative years and captioned in manuscript "... Gov't House... unfinished." Sepia photographs mounted onto ivory cardstock leaves, four of which measure approximately 15,5 x 10 cm, two of which measure 8 x 8 cm. Very rare, original colonial photographs taken in Western Australia around 1860, illustrate the life of early settlers of the upper class, their lives differing greatly from the convicts whose labour built their fortunes. Three of the photographs show the newly built, but not yet completed Government House in Perth. The largest view is captioned accordingly, in a colonial hand. Governor John Hampton may have had just taken up residence there at the time this photograph was taken. The two smaller photographs capture a group of men and women in fine clothing playing croquet. [The website of the State Library of Western Australia shows one of these croquet photographs and dates it "circa 1860."] Colonial residences are captured in the other two photographs, one of which is an brick exquisite dwelling with wrap-around veranda, a fine trim, and elongated windows. Three adults and one child pose on the veranda in formal attire. Beside the home is a wheelchair, then called an invalid wheelchair, this one with three wheels, in the style of Carters (J & A) Limited, of London. Further research is warranted to identify the home owners. Government House is the official residence of the Governor of Western Australia, situated in the central business district of Perth (the state capital). It was built between 1859 and 1864 at a cost of £15,000 largely by convicts. Governor John Hampton took up residence in 1863, prior to its completion in 1864. In the 1890s, a ballroom was added, designed by or under the direction of government architect, Hillson Beasley who designed a number of other public buildings in the city. Following the establishment of the Swan River Colony in 1829, the first governor Captain James Stirling and his family were initially housed in tents on a site near the corner of Barrack Street and St Georges Terrace, known today as Stirling Gardens and Supreme Court Gardens. In 1832 a temporary wooden building was constructed on the same site and used until the so-called original Government House was built a short distance away near the present-day site between 1834 and 1835. This building served successive governors until work began on the new present-day Government House, for which the foundation stone was laid on 17 March 1859. These views are contemporary to the convict era, when Western Australia was a penal colony. Between the years 1850 and 1868, some 9721 convicts were transported to Western Australia on 43 convict ship voyages. Although transportation ended in 1868, there were still 3,158 convicts in the system by the end of that year, and it took many years for these remaining convicts to die or receive their freedom. Indeed, one of the most famous events of Western Australia's convict era, the Catalpa rescue, did not occur until 1876, eight years after the cessation of transportation.

        ???? [Tsukuba hikan]. Secret Letter from Tsukuba

      Man'en 1.1860. 6 double folded leaves, original paper covers, red chop and ink title upper cover. Some light soiling and small section of insect damage covers, generally very good. 27 x 20cm. This very interesting manuscript titled 'Secret Letter from Tsukuba' ia a copy of a letter addressed to Ii Naosuke, ???? (1815-60), then Chief Minister of the Edo Government and although there is no name of the sender, the copier having only written 'Sender' where the author's name would be expected. Since Tsukuba is the name of a mountain which symbolises the Mito Domain [present Ibaraki Prefecture], the sender is probably Ii's political foe, Tokugawa Nariaki ???? (1800-60), who was a warlord of the Mito Domain. Ii Nariaki, then the Edo Government's Coastal Defence Officer, was one of the prominent leaders of the Pro-emperor jo-i groups (those who wanted to expel foreigners), while Ii was supporting the opening of Japan to the outside world. The letter discusses trade, Christianity, open ports, setting up of a consulate after the arrival of the American ships led by Commodore Perry in 1853. .
