Geological Map of the British Isles and Part of France. Showing also the Inland Navigation by Means of Rivers and Canals, Railways and Principal Roads, and Sites of the Minerals..

London: Published for the Proprietor by Stanford... & by Grant & Griffith... (Late Harris) also at Edinburgh by W. & A.K. Johnston, 1859. A fine folding geological map of the country with bright original handcolouring illustrating the geological strata, an inset map of the Shetland and Orkney Islands to the upper right of the north east sheet plus 9 sections from around the country beneath also coloured, the map printed over four parts, each measuring c. 76 x 65.5 cm, i.e. 152 x 131 cm if joined, each part dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen, marbled paper to each of the folded end sections with miniature outline maps to one side of each part, publisher's green morocco slipcase, gilt ruled and lettered to the spine, the gilt arms of Prince Albert (to whom the map is dedicated) to the upper board. The foldover flap of the slipcase wanting, some scuffing to the extremities, a little offsetting to the map, a very good example overall. A revised issue of the second edition of Knipe's magnificent geological map of the British Isles, the first issue of the first edition having been published in 1843 with the first issue of the second edition appearing in 1851. As with Knipe's previous notable geological map, that of England & Wales published from 1835 onwards, the map was reissued at intervals and updated with fresh data collected from fieldwork. This edition has a printed list of "authorities consulted" that provides an illustrious roll call of Knipe's forerunners and contemporaries in the science: Smith, Greenough, Lyell, Mantell and Murchison to name but a few. This issue has an addenda to that list highlighting the sources of the data added to the map in the period between 1851 and the date of publication.

Friedrich von Schiller's Bibliothek. Mit einem Facsimile aus seinem eigenhändigen Bücherverzeichnisse. Zum 10. November 1859

      - One large folding facsimile plate. 16 pp. Small 8vo, orig. printed wrappers, stitched as issued and bound in modern wrappers. Berlin, J.A. Stargardt, 1859. One of a very few surviving copies of this bookseller's catalogue of a significant portion of the library of Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805), the German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. In 1851, the bookseller and auctioneer Stargardt acquired this part of Schiller's library from his son Karl. It proved difficult to sell, and in 1859 he produced the present catalogue, selling the collection in 1860 to the Hamburg bookseller I.S. Meyer. Meyer also had difficulties selling the collection, and in 1862 he held a lottery, which was won by a merchant named Helmcke, who received the 156 books and the manuscript list as his prize. Helmcke gave the collection to the Hamburger Stadtbibliothek in 1867, where it was absorbed into the general collections and the duplicates dispersed. In 1905 the remaining 114 volumes were reassembled and shelved separately. The engraved folding plate is a facsimile of a manuscript list of the books in Schiller's hand. Fine copy preserved in a green morocco slipcase. ? Roland Folter, Deutsche Dichter- und Germanistenbibliotheken, 664. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Nature-Printed British Ferns (being Figures and Descritpions of the Species and Varieties of Ferns Found in the United Kngdom). Two Vols.

Bradbury Evans, London 1859 - Bradbury Evans, London, 1859. Book condition as follows. Volume I in good condition. Some rubbing to green morocco of boards and decorative paper cover to rear board damaged to an area of approx 80 x 110mm. Binding sound to both vols. Some occasional light spotting and light offsetting. Vol II in very good condition. Slight rubbing/chipping to green morroco. Previous owner's name in pencil. 8vo. 122 colour plates nature-printed by Henry Bradshaw with tissue guards. Top edge gilt, remainder untrimmed. Contemporary dark green half morocco, elaborate gilt decorations to spine with maroon morocco labels. Very few books produced using this nature-printing process. Henry Bradbury took a technique invented by Alois Auer in 1852 and further developed it. The process took specimens and pressed them onto a thin lead plate to leave an intaglio impression with rather fine detail. Bradbury studied Auer's discovery in Vienna and went on to patent his own version in London without crediting Auer. The resulting controversy was very damaging personally to Bradbury who fell into despondency and ended by taking his own life through drinking acid. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Fuei shinsetsu [trans.: Manual of Gynecology, Obstetrics, and the Nursing Care of the Newborn]

      - Many woodcut illus. in the text. In Chinese with Japanese reading marks. 47; 27 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers (Vol. II with some minor marginal worming), new stitching. Kyoto: 1859. First edition to be published in Japan of a quite fascinating book. Hobson (1816-73), after studying medicine at University College, London, served with the London Missionary Society in China. Hobson arrived in Macao in 1839 and spent about twenty years in China in hospitals in Macao, Hong Kong, Canton and Shanghai. He was a pioneer in proposing the establishment of a medical school in Hong Kong for Chinese students and wrote many books, including an English/Chinese medical dictionary. A serious student of the Chinese language, Hobson also wrote in Chinese a series of four original medical books with two Chinese collaborators: Outline of Anatomy and Physiology (Quanti xin lun, 1850), First Lines of the Practice of Surgery in the West (Xiyi lüelun, 1857), Practice of Medicine and Materia Medica (Neike xinshuo, 1858), and the present work (1858). These books were not translations of individual European medical works but entirely new and unique distillations of what Hobson considered to be the best in Western medicine. They were widely used within the Chinese missionary medical schools for the rest of the century. Their immediate success caused the present work to be quickly published in Japan as well. A copy had been presented by one of Hobson's Chinese assistants to the Japanese publisher Fukuchi who added the Japanese reading marks and issued it in Tokyo for the Japanese market in 1859. Vol. I deals with conception, pregnancy, and birth. The second volume is concerned with pediatric medicine. The fine woodcuts depict many views of the pelvic girdle, the fetus in utero, and birth positions. Fine set. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Stanford's Library Map of Australasia

London: Edward Stanford, 1859. Folding map of the continent in four parts, each measuring 74 x 80 cm, i.e. 148 x 160 cm if joined, original colour in outline, contemporary manuscript annotations in pencil and ink on all four parts recording the course of H.M.S. Salamander to and around Australia, dissected into 16 sections and mounted on linen, blue patterned paper to the folded end sections, the small discreet circular stamp of the "Dept. of Soc[ial] Anthrop[ology] Oxford" to one panel on the verso of each map, housed in the publisher's black morocco slipcase with a foldover tab perished on one joint, gilt lettered to the spine. The slipcase worn, but sound, the map in very good condition overall. HMS Salamander was first commissioned in 1832 and saw active service across the world, most notably in the second Anglo-Burmese War. She suffered damage during a voyage in Arctic waters in the 1850s and was extensively refitted at Chatham before being sent to Australia in late 1863. An inset chart of the world to the lower left corner of the south east sheet shows the course of the Salamander's voyage to Australia with dates of her staging posts. On the main body of the map the annotations continue in the same manner, showing the course around the south of Australia thence north along the eastern coast and up to the Adolphus Channel.
