        ç“¦ç‰ˆã€€æ¨ªæµœéŠå¥³ç”º [Kawaraban:Yokohama yÅ«jomachi]. News-sheet: Pleasure Quarter in Yokohama...

Edo: Ansei 6 (1859]. Black and white kawaraban or news-sheet announcing the opening of a new pleasure quarter for foreigners in Yokohama. Sheet measures 30.5 x 23.5cm. Right margin trimmed, few small creases otherwise very good. In 1858 the Edo government concluded an amity and commerce treaty with the United States, the Netherlands, Russia, England, and France and Yokohama became a port open to these countries. The following year a pleasure quarter, Gankiro, exclusively for foreigners was opened in Yokohama. This kawaraban gives a plan of the pleasure quarter, an illustration showing the ships from the five countries as well as Japanese boats and a price list at the right upper corner.         Adam Bede.

Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons,, 1859. 3 volumes, octavo. Original brown diagonal ripple-grain cloth, titles to spines gilt, floral border to covers in blind, yellow coated endpapers. Binder's ticket to rear pastedown of vol. I. Contemporary lending library labels of All Saint's Church, Glencarse (Diocese of Brechin) to front pastedowns. Light marks to cloth, very minor wear to tips, hinges repaired, occasional faint foxing to contents. An excellent set in bright cloth. First edition of the author's first novel. The condition of this set is surprisingly good, given its provenance from a lending library; the title is second on Sadleir's list of comparative scarcity for fine condition in original cloth, due to the high proportion of copies that were acquired by lending libraries. Sadleir notes that whereas Eliot's first book, Clerical Life, was bought by the public in a much higher proportion than normal, and only a small proportion went into circulating libraries, Adam Bede made "a hit with a different and much larger public: the Libraries re-order and second and third editions follow quickly. I venture a guess that the cognoscenti, slightly resentful that an author they had spotted should now have become popular, bought Adam Bede sparingly, taking the line that as it was a Library success they might as well borrow a copy and save their money".

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Meiningen, 29. I. 1859. - 2 SS. 4to.

        Anatomy Descriptive and Surgical

Philadelphia: Blanchard and Lea, 1859. First American edition. Very good antiquarian condition. Large 8vo. With 363 wood-engraved illustrations after drawings by H.V. Carter. Original publisher's sheep, black spine label, chipped (biopredation?) with loss; extremities lightly rubbed (not objectionable). Faint early inscription in pencil on first blank leaf; one or possibly two blank leaves excised (there are three blank leaves at end). Occasional minor blemishes in the text; overall in superior state. Preserved in a protective linen case. First American edition, scarce in such good, unrestored condition. "The first edition of 1858 was found to have a good many errors, most of which were corrected in the 1859 edition" (Heirs of Hippocrates 1915). It has not escaped our notice that the publication of this first American edition was timely, occurring as it did on the eve of the American Civil War, during which time at least 620,000 men died from disease or were killed in combat, and untold numbers were grievously wounded. Thus Gray's Anatomy was immediately employed on and off the battlefield, making it an indispensable tool of doctors, surgeons, and medical students nationwide. Thus is hardly surprising that so few copies of the first American edition survive intact, as they were literally read and reread to pieces. That the book belongs to an era which manufactured some of the worst paper stock in American history certainly did not improve its survival rate. Gray's Anatomy is so famous as to render praise redundant; the simple fact that it is still being published after 158 years attests to the enduring legacy of the author and artist. In the 2015 edition of "Gray's Anatomy" (41st Edition) we find the statement: "In 1858, Drs. Henry Gray and Henry Vandyke Carter created a book for their surgical colleagues that established an enduring standard among anatomical texts. After more than 150 years of continuous publication, Gray?s Anatomy remains the definitive, comprehensive reference on the subject." Indeed, Gray's anatomical textbook has been more widely studied by successive generations of medical students than any other. It is justly celebrated for the clarity of the illustrations and text, and its deceptively simple layout. "Gray's treatise was distinguished for the lucid and logical arrangement of a mass of detailed descriptions; clear new drawings based on dissections by the surgeon-author and the artist; and sections on the surgical anatomy of defined areas, such as the axilla, the elbow, the popliteal space, the perineum, and the laryngotracheal region" (Lilly Library, Notable Medical Books, 211). References: Garrison & Morton 418. Norman 939. Grolier, One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine 68. See also William F. Fox, Regimental Losses in the American Civil War 1861-1865 (Albany, 1889), p. 24, wherein he gives the official tabulation of the Surgeon-General: the number of wounded treated in hospitals was 246,712 but this figure includes only records of engagements for which statistics are known; furthermore, the figure excluded the number of wounded soldiers who were not treated in hospitals. To compensate for the lack of real data, Fox computed the ratio of mortally wounded to wounded (not killed) as being 1 to 4.8 -- an alarming figure given that the combined number of combat deaths for the Union and Confederacy are estimated to have been 205,000.

[EAST COST OF NORTH AMERICA & CUBA] Puteshestvie po Severo-Amerikanskim Shtatam, Kanade i Ostrovu Kube [i.e. Travel across the North-American States, Canada and the Cuba Island]

St. Petersburg: Typ. of K. Wolf, 1859. 2 vols. bound together. [4], iv, 374; [4], [iv], 399, vii. 21x14,5 cm. With a large folding lithographed map. Contemporary quarter leather, spine with gilt lettered title. Binding mildly rubbed on extremities, otherwise a very good copy. First and only edition. Very rare Russian imprint with only six paper copies found in Worldcat. One of the first Russian books on North America, it describes the travels of a Russian lawyer, statesman and historian Alexander Lakier (1824-1870) to the major cities on the East Coast of the United States, Eastern Canada, and Cuba in autumn-winter 1857. Lakier visited and gave detailed description of Boston, New York, Hudson River, US Military Academy in West Point, Montreal, Quebec City, Bytown or Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, Chicago, and many others, went down the Ohio and Mississippi River to New Orleans, and thence by steamer to Cuba. The main question he wanted to answer in his book is: «How did this younger brother in the family of mankind manage to leave his elder brothers so far behind in trade, navigation, and production activity in general? Why already now the North-American States are in many aspects the example for Europe, when it has been only half a century after the beginning of its existence? Where is the core of the democratic equality which is absolutely incomprehensible for a European? What benefit, what edification can we extract from this great experience, presented by this country, the relations with which although hasn't started due to distance, but in time, as can be predicted, will take humongous scale across the Pacific Ocean?» (vol. 1, p. 2). Lakier leaves interesting notes on peculiarities of Christian churches in America, municipal administration, political and election systems, prisons, native people of Canada and the United States, slavery, passion of the Americans for money and wealth, and many others. His conclusion about the Americans is that «The people [of America] - young, active, practical, successful in their undertakings… will influence Europe, but use for that not weapon, not sword and fire, not death and ruins, but will spread their influence by the power of inventions, trade, industries; and this influence is stronger than that of every conquest» (vol. 2, p. 399). The book is supplemented with a large well executed map of the eastern coast of Canada and the United States illustrating the author's travels and displaying the railway network in the region. Lakier served as an associate in the Russian Ministry of Justice (since 1845) and later in the Ministry of Internal Affairs (since 1858). He is considered the first historian of the Russian heraldry and seals; his major work Russian Heraldry (SPb., 1855) received the Demidov award of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The trip to North America, was part of a larger voyage in 1856-1858, which also included Europe, Northern Africa and Palestine. Several short essays describing Lakier's impressions of European and American cities were published in Saint Petersburg newspapers and magazines (Sovremennik, SPb. Vedomosti, Otechestvennye Zapiski, and others), but it was only the account of the travels across North America that was published separately.

All The Year Round. A Weekly Journal. Conducted by Charles Dickens. With which is incorporated Household Words. Includes the very first appearance of Dickens's 'A Tale of Two Cities' and Wilkie Collins's 'The Woman in White'.

London: 1859-1866.. 16 volumes. Continuous from number 1 to 400. Contemporary binding of plum full morocco, extra gilt, with marbled edges and endpapers. Internally clean, very light wear to covers, one or two spine a touch sunned. A superb, very decorative set of this important periodical publication, edited by Dickens, in effect the continuation to Household Words. Charles Dickens owned All The Year Round with W.H. Wills. He remained its editor until his death in 1870. His son, Charles Dickens Jr., inherited his father's 75 per-cent stake in the business and, in January 1871, bought out Wills's 25 per-cent share, following the latter's understandable objection to Charley's decision to award himself both the editor's and sub-editor's salary. The journal continued under Charles Dickens Jr.'s editorship until 1888, and finally ceased publication in 1893. (Drew 12).

Photograms Of An Eastern Tour: Being Journal Letters Of Last Year, Written Home From Germany, Dalmatia, Corfu, Greece, Palestine, Desert Of Shur, Egypt, The Mediterranean, &c

John Farquhar Shaw, London, 1859. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. THERE IS NO AUTHOR GIVEN JUST AN S APPEARS IN THE TITLE AREA AS A GREEK CHARACTER. 'The dedication of this volume tells nearly all that is to be told. The entertainment that his letters seemed to afford at home-as reported from time to time to the writer-led him to think, for the first time when approaching the Coast of Palestine, that they might possibly afford amusement and information to others. This made him ask that they might be preserved and copied against his return, and induced him to endeavour to journalize more carefully for the future. From those letters, mutatis mutandis, amplified occasionally from a private journal and notes, this volume is composed. His object having been to bring every interesting scene he witnessed, and any interesting remarks he heard, clearly before his friends at home (who led him to think he had in some measure succeeded), suggested the title of " Photograms of an Eastern Tour." He has only to add, that he has sought by strict accuracy to make his matter worthy of that title, and that he believes much information of practical utility will be found in the contents-which he, at least, could not discover in other books, especially regarding the Desert of Shur-hitherto little noticed, and now of much importance. In conclusion, he has to state that he trusts he has written throughout in the spirit of a Protestant Christian, humbly desirous to aid the cause of true religion, and to the support of which any profit from the sale of this work will be devoted'. Book - in Good red boards with blind stamped decoration, gilt lettering and small gilt illustration to the front board - some grubbiness to the boards, sunning to the spine but the gilt is still quite bright, some bumping and wearing to the extreme corners and bumping to the extreme edges of the spine.         Geological Map of the British Isles and Part of France. Showing also the Inland Navigation by Means of Rivers and Canals, Railways and Principal Roads, and Sites of the Minerals..

London: Published for the Proprietor by Stanford... & by Grant & Griffith... (Late Harris) also at Edinburgh by W. & A.K. Johnston, 1859. A fine folding geological map of the country with bright original handcolouring illustrating the geological strata, an inset map of the Shetland and Orkney Islands to the upper right of the north east sheet plus 9 sections from around the country beneath also coloured, the map printed over four parts, each measuring c. 76 x 65.5 cm, i.e. 152 x 131 cm if joined, each part dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen, marbled paper to each of the folded end sections with miniature outline maps to one side of each part, publisher's green morocco slipcase, gilt ruled and lettered to the spine, the gilt arms of Prince Albert (to whom the map is dedicated) to the upper board. The foldover flap of the slipcase wanting, some scuffing to the extremities, a little offsetting to the map, a very good example overall. A revised issue of the second edition of Knipe's magnificent geological map of the British Isles, the first issue of the first edition having been published in 1843 with the first issue of the second edition appearing in 1851. As with Knipe's previous notable geological map, that of England & Wales published from 1835 onwards, the map was reissued at intervals and updated with fresh data collected from fieldwork. This edition has a printed list of "authorities consulted" that provides an illustrious roll call of Knipe's forerunners and contemporaries in the science: Smith, Greenough, Lyell, Mantell and Murchison to name but a few. This issue has an addenda to that list highlighting the sources of the data added to the map in the period between 1851 and the date of publication.

Friedrich von Schiller's Bibliothek. Mit einem Facsimile aus seinem eigenhändigen Bücherverzeichnisse. Zum 10. November 1859

      - One large folding facsimile plate. 16 pp. Small 8vo, orig. printed wrappers, stitched as issued and bound in modern wrappers. Berlin, J.A. Stargardt, 1859. One of a very few surviving copies of this bookseller's catalogue of a significant portion of the library of Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805), the German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. In 1851, the bookseller and auctioneer Stargardt acquired this part of Schiller's library from his son Karl. It proved difficult to sell, and in 1859 he produced the present catalogue, selling the collection in 1860 to the Hamburg bookseller I.S. Meyer. Meyer also had difficulties selling the collection, and in 1862 he held a lottery, which was won by a merchant named Helmcke, who received the 156 books and the manuscript list as his prize. Helmcke gave the collection to the Hamburger Stadtbibliothek in 1867, where it was absorbed into the general collections and the duplicates dispersed. In 1905 the remaining 114 volumes were reassembled and shelved separately. The engraved folding plate is a facsimile of a manuscript list of the books in Schiller's hand. Fine copy preserved in a green morocco slipcase. ? Roland Folter, Deutsche Dichter- und Germanistenbibliotheken, 664. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
