Notes of lectures on "physiology," given at Univ. College . . . session 1859-60.

1859-1860, London 1859 - Sharpey, William (1802-80). Notes of lectures on "physiology," given at Univ. College . . . session 1859-60. Manuscript notes and drawings in the hand of a student, Thomas F. H. Green. 4 unnumbered leaves, 361 numbered pages, approximately 100 blank pages at the end. [London,] 1859-60. 227 x 189 mm. 19th century half leather, marbled boards, rebacked in cloth, light wear, original plain gray wrappers bound in. Very good. Small stamp of the Birmingham Medical Institute on 2 or 3 leaves. Sharpey was appointed professor of anatomy and physiology at University College in 1836; he was the first to teach a complete course of physiology and minute anatomy at an English medical school. He was the author of two classic papers on cilia and ciliary motion (see Garrison-Morton 600 and 603) and discovered the "fibers of Sharpey" in bone tissue (see Garrison-Morton 545); he also edited the fifth through eighth editions of Jones Quain’s Elements of Anatomy. Through his pupils Sharpey was the founder of the British school of physiology; his students included Michael Foster, first professor of physiology at Cambridge University, and John Burdon-Sanderson, the first to occupy the Waynflete Chair of Physiology at Oxford. These lecture notes cover the blood, tissues of the body, vascular system, digestive system, respiration, brain and nervous system, organs of special senses and reproduction. The notes are written on rectos only; several versos contain neatly executed drawings in ink or pencil, many illustrating aspects of microanatomy. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Royal Edinburgh Hospital The foundation of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital was triggered by the death in Bedlam, at the age of 24, of the poet Robert Fergusson. His medical attendant Dr Andrew Duncan, was so moved by the poet's plight that he resolved to fund a hospital in Edinburgh where the mentally ill could be humanely looked after. The first to hold that office was Dr William Mackinnon. Under Mackinnon's direction patients were encouraged to use whatever trade or skill they possessed. Dr Mackinnon was succeeded in 1846 by Dr David Skae, who was interested in the classification of mental illness. His lectures to medical students helped to establish the Asylum's reputation as a postgraduate training centre. In 1873 Skae was succeeded by Dr Thomas Clouston. - - - PLINY EARLE Asile de Bloomindgale à New York.

Clipper Ship Sailing Card. Wild Rover

This 1859 clipper card presents an iconic “sail beats steam” image - an increasingly desperate illusion propagated by the clipper ship industry. A fleet horseman (representing a speedy clipper ship) outpaces and even lassos the driver of a lumbering coal wagon (symbolizing a coal-fired steamship). Alas, the voyage advertised here was anything but speedy. Four times the Wild Rover passed Cape Horn, only to be blown back and forced to try again. She finally arrived in San Francisco almost six months after leaving New York. This card measures 6 3/8 x 4 1/8 inches and is printed by Nesbitt & Co. of New York. Save for a minor spot of discoloration in the upper left margin, it is in fine condition.

Autograph Letter Signed, 8vo, 3pp, Hartford, Conn., April 27, 1857

This is a beautifully handwritten letter to Mr. Austin. In this letter he refers to a forthcoming trip to South America. Two years after this letter, he produced his painting "Heart of the Andes" (1859), now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York City. He explains how he "attended to" his correspondent's "curiosities". "I had to pack them myself, as nobody else would have done it properly. I found most of the Alcohol evaporated from the jars which I replaced. I secured the stoppers and packed all in a box. I have my doubts about the Eel...I will find some place to store all of your trays safely...Shumway...has taken a new studio...and is doing very well...I am nearly dead with the great amount of work which I have had to do lately...Please tell Judge Skinner that I intend to undertake his pictures simultaneously after my return from South America...." Signed, "F.E. Church."

Norske Huldre-Eventyr og Folkesagn, fortalt. I. Anden forøgede Udgave. + Anden Samling (originaludgaven). [Komplet].

Christiania, Steenballes Forlag, 1859 + Christiania, C.A. Dybwad, 1848.

Band I-VII.

Marbled edges and endpapers. Boards and boards´ edges ruled in gilt. Blind stamped owner signature on front free endpapers (Th. E. Petersen). Light foxing in margins of appr. 1/4 of the pages. Rubbed at extremities. The textblock in volume II is very slightly waved and a bit stiff, this caused by damp. A fine, attractive set of this scarce work. ''Ranke [...] envisaged three distinct levels of historical concern. The first, 'the investigation of the particular, even of the single point,' evokes what historians today call micro-history. The second, which shows how the particular its part of a 'larger context', is also visible in present-day historiography. The third level, concerned with 'the great totality' - with 'comprehending the whole' - is hidden, but the idea of it is familiar to us: it is the idea of grand narrative; of a unified history of humankind.''         On Double Refraction in Matter moving through the AetherLondon: Taylor & Francis, 1904. First edition.

Rare offprint issue of the Brace experiment - the first optical experiment measuring the relative motion of Earth and the luminiferous aether which was sufficiently precise to detect magnitudes of second order to <i>v/c</i>. The Brace experiment was of great importance for the development of the Lorentz transformation and consequently of the theory of relativity. <br/><br/> "De Witt Bristol Brace [1859-1905], professor of physics and specialist in optics at the University of Nebraska, is best remembered for his experimental test of the Lorentz-Fitzgerald contraction hypothesis in 1904 ... In 1904 the opportunity arose for Brace to apply the extremely sensitive optical techniques he had developed to one of the crucial problems of his day. Two years earlier, Lord Rayleigh had proposed that the Lorentz-Fitzgerald contraction, if it existed, might produce an observable double refraction in a moving transparent medium. Rayleigh made experiments in which he failed to find the predicted effect, but his work was not quite accurate enough to be conclusive. Brace pointed this out and reconducted the investigation in his own laboratory, establishing beyond a doubt the absence of double refraction caused by movement of the refracting medium through the ether."         IRON MANUFACTURER&#39;S GUIDE TO THE FURNACES, FORGES AND ROLLING MIL

1859. Fine. LESLEY, J. P. THE IRON MANUFACTURER&#39;S GUIDE TO THE FURNACES, FORGES AND ROLLING MILLS OF THE UNITED STATES. With discussions of iron as a commercial element, an American ore, and a manufactured article, in commerce and in history. With maps and plates. New York: John Wiley, London: Trubner & Co., 1859. First edition. Illustrated with 5 folding maps, including two with color outlines, 1 plate, and text figures. Octavo. 23 cm. [1] publisher&#39;s adv. + [2],xxxiv,772 pp. Original publisher&#39;s brown cloth binding, with gilt-stamped spine title, and sides blocked in blind. Contemporary ink ownership, dated 5 June 1859, of John Simmons of Deepfield, Staffordshire, England, who managed the Ulster Iron Works at Saugerties, NY, where he developed double-puddling, hoop-making, and cold-rolling processes. Except for some very minor wear at heel and crown, and a bit of edgewear to the fore-edge of one folding map which extends a bit beyond the bookblock, this is a truly fine copy, being exceptionally clean and crisp. (Sabin 40187). This is one of J. Peter Lesley&#39;s major works, containing information and statistics on ironworks as well as a detailed geological discussion of iron deposits in Pennsylvania and elsewhere. The preface is notable for Lesley&#39;s attack on Henry Darwin Rogers, who directed the first state survey of Pennsylvania, and for whom Lesley worked on the survey during the years 1838-1841. Lesley accuses Rogers of scientific theft for not acknowledging the work of the young apprentices, like himself, who had assisted him in the survey. In 1873, Lesle became the director of the second state survey of Pennsylvania. (D.S.B.)
