The Marsh King's Daughter

Watercolour, gouache, ink and pencil on paper. 14-7/8 x 10 in. Framed. Watercolour, gouache, ink and pencil on paper. 14-7/8 x 10 in. An unpublished illustration for "The Marsh King's Daughter," a fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1858, and one of those closest to his heart. In the story, a group of storks acting as a Greek chorus tell the tale of Helga, daughter of the Marsh King, who is a beautiful and violent girl by day, but a sad and gentle frog by night. She is redeemed after saving the life of a Christian priest doomed to be sacrificed by the Vikings, and here Andersen touches on the themes of faith and immortality so common in his writings. Kay Nielsen spent over 10 years working on his illustrations to Andersen's Fairy Tales, which was published in 1924. "The Marsh King's Daughter" and hence the painting, were not used in the book.

THE PERMANENT WAY AND COAL-BURNING LOCOMOTIVE BOILERS OF EUROPEAN RAILWAYS; WITH A COMPARISON OF THE WORKING ECONOMY OF EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN LINES, AND THE PRINCIPLES UPON WHICH IMPROVEMENT MUST PROCEED

Holley & Colburn; Privately Published, New York 1858 - This book was published just twenty-nine years after the first common carrier railroad in America became operational. Most new railroad mechanical and operational designs and methods were still coming from Europe. "In comparing our [United States] railways in these respects [Roadbed and Superstructure and Locomotives], with those of Europe, we find that while the first cost of roadbed and superstructure of those of the latter is but little greater, [however] their expenses per mile run, for Maintenance of Way, is but two-fifths that in this country, while their consumption of fuel for equal mileage, is less than 60 percent, of the quantity burned in our locomotives." Clearly, improvements in American railroading needed to be made. 168 pages with chapters on "Comparative Working of European and American Lines," "Earthwork and Drainage," "Ballast," "Sleepers," "Rails," "Rail Joints," "Coal-Burning Boilers; English and American Coal," "Combustion of Coal," "Coal-Burning Boiler of London and South Western Railroad," "McConnell's Boiler," and "Coal-Burning Boilers With Inclined Grate." All fifty-one engraved plates by J. Bien, plus two maps are present. Plates feature engravings of standard sections of roadbed, drainage, earthwork, creosoting sleepers, standard rail sections, rail joints, combustion, coal-burning locomotive boilers, etc. Bound in original brown cloth with design and border on the covers stamped in blind, and lettering on the spine stamped in gilt. Professionally rebacked with original cloth spine pressed on. Gilt lettering dulled. Occasional, seldom, small spots of foxing throughout. A handsome, very good copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

THE BRITISH EXPEDITION TO THE CRIMEA

London: G. Routledge & Co., 1858. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Frontispiece portrait, four plates, and ten folding maps and plans, including four housed in the rear pocket. London: G. Routledge & Co., 1858. First edition thus, a much expanded revision of Russell's The War (1856). The collected letters to The Times by its famous correspondent, covering the period from March 6, 1854 to June 29, 1856. Russell (1820-1907) left with the troops from Southampton, witnessed the unopposed landing at Evpatoriia on September 14, 1854, and reported all subsequent events until the proclamation of peace, bringing home to the British public the horrors of the war, the military mismanagement, and the heroism of the soldiers. Russell was knighted in 1895 for services to journalism and is described on his monument in St. Paul's as "the first and greatest of war correspondents." This copy bears the armorial bookplate of General Sir William John Codrington GCB (1804-84), a British general and politician who served in the Crimean War, on the front flyleaf. Codrington distinguished himself at the Battle of Alma, and again at the Battle of Inkerman, after which he assumed command of the light brigade as senior brigadier. Octavo. Original red cloth binding, with gilt titles. Some mild wear to the extremities; else very good..

A Personal Narrative of The Siege of Lucknow

London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans and Roberts. 1858.. First edition. 8vo. 380pp. Publisher's orange embossed cloth titled in gilt to spine. Bright and sharp, slight bumping to spine ends and corners, minor edgewear, very good indeed, a very pretty copy. Internally clean, brown, glazed endpapers with ads to pastedowns, Edwards and Remnants bindery label to rear pastedown, evidence of the removal of a similar label to the front pastedown. Portrait frontispiece of Sir Henry Lawrence looking somewhat grim, perhaps unsurprisingly. Minor offsetting to title page. With folding map of the Residency and surrounding city. An eyewitness account by a civilian present in the Residency for the duration of the siege, or sieges if you wish to be more picky, and its subsequent liberation. Often viewed as a measurement of British fighting resolve during the enormous blow that was what is referred to as the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 (also referred to as the First Indian War of Independence); the city was held, taken, lost and retaken at a cost of 2500 men, the final day's fighting of the lifting of the siege created no less than 24 Victoria Cross recipients, more than any other action in British military history. A handsome copy of a book more usually seen looking rather more mutinous.

"Fugue on a Subject by Rossini" - Autograph Musical Quotation

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Interesting AMQS of a short fugue penned by the influential German conductor and composer, mounted together with a reproduction photograph. The fugue, "Sopra un soggetto di fuga da Rossini" for three voices, begins with the whimsical chromatic subject in the bass and a countersubject above, continues through a complete statement of the subject in a third voice, and then comes to a sudden (but harmonically logical) conclusion after twelve measures - clearly demonstrating Hiller's tremendous compositional skill, while paying hommage to a composer with whom he was closely associated. He has signed below and dated Colonia [Cologne], June 3, 1858. Mounted together with the AMQS is a small reproduction photograph portrait of the composer. Heavy toning and some creases and spots of damage, but very legible and overall in very good condition. AMQS 7 x 6 inches (18.1 x 15.5 cm); photograph 2.75 x 4 inches (6.7 x 10 cm); total size 8.25 x 11.75 inches (20.9 x 29.6 cm).

Perhaps best remembered today as the dedicatee of Schumann's Piano Concerto and Chopin's Nocturnes, op. 15, Hiller was an extremely important figure in the musical world of nineteenth-century Germany. During his long career, he conducted the orchestras of Leipzig, Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Dresden, founded the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, composed six operas, three piano concertos, four symphonies, and a large body of chamber music, and taught pupils such as Max Bruch (whom he introduced to the melody of the Kol Nidrei, as he was Jewish). He was also an important lecturer and writer. Hiller had been encouraged by Rossini in his earlier years and they met again in Normandy in 1855. His close musical associates also included Mendelssohn, whom he met when they were both boys, Schumann, Schubert, and Wagner, with whom he worked closely in Dresden.

Villarancidio (con perdon del plagio) ó asesinato de un poema en once cantos mortales, que, con el titulo de Victoria de la Palma.

Lima, Typografia Nacional de N.N. Corpancho, por J.H. del Campo, 1858. - 4°, Original peach printed wrappers (some wear). Steel engraved vignette of a bat on title page [symbol representing the anonymous author]. In very good condition. (1 l.), 61. (3) pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION [?] of this rare pamphlet in verse with commentary in prose. This satirical work reproduces a poem praising President Ramón Castilla's 1855 triumph at the Battle of La Palma in Arequipa written by the magistrate Manuel V. Villarán (1812-1860) and originally published in Lima, 1856, now with extensive commentary by Fuentes in prose below the text of the poem. The commentary provides a biting indictment of Villarán's admiration for Castilla. Fuentes? wordplays and his mockery of the formality of juridical language throughout the commentary reveal an incisive political critique. Castilla, who had served as president of Peru from February 17 to December 11 1844, and from 1845 to 1851, had become president again during a bloody civil war, in which Fuentes had spent time in exile. In 1856 Fuentes had published from exile in Valparaíso a hostile biography of Castilla. In 1858, with Fuentes back in Lima, a constitutional convention enacted a new constitution greatly weakening the powers of the presidency. Shortly after this pamphlet appeared Fuentes switched sides, becoming a supporter of Castilla. This change in sympathies may account at least in part for the rarity of the present work. In 1860 Castilla arranged to have a new convention approve yet another constitution which restored presidential dominance, and remained in force until 1920. Manuel Atanasio Fuentes (1820-1889), born in Lima, studied law at the University of San Marcos in his native City, and was graduated in 1841, but soon began to concentrate more on journalism. He contributed to the @Heraldo of Lima, and afterward successively established @E1 Monitor de la Moda, @La Crónica, and @Semanario de los Niños. His most successful newspaper was @El Murciélago, founded in 1855. The name was taken from a pseudonym under which Fuentes had been writing [thus the bat vignette on the title page of the present work]. This newspaper, by its trenchant wit and its fearlessness, soon became known throughout Peru. As Fuentes never temporized, the journal was often suppressed and its editor exiled. FRA DIAVOLA’. An opera in three acts by ‘Auber’ - text by ‘Scribe’. First produced in Paris in 1830 with Boulanger, Prevost, Chollet, Fereol and Moreau-Santi.

      M. & N. Hanhart ca. 1858 - Each 30 x 24 cm. Small tear repaired. Two lithographs in vibrant original colour by John Brandard from a photo by Herbert Watkins, most probably inspired by the first performance in Italian at the Lyceum Theatre, London in 1857. Zerlina was played by the then famous soprano Angiolina Bosio and the title role by Italo Gardoni. Fra Diavolo’s two robber companions were sung by Zalgar and Taglianco. Herbert Watkins was one of the most significant photographers in the nineteenth century but today remains largely unknown. Daniel François Esprit Auber (1782-1871) was a French composer. Fra Diavolo, was his most successful opera.

Goto oku no hosomichi [trans.: The Narrow Road of Oku].

Eleven double-page & three single-page finely color-printed woodcuts. 29; 26 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. orange wrappers, title labels on upper covers, new stitching. Osaka: 1858. A picture scroll created in 1770 by Yosa Buson, the great Nanga painter and haiku poet, entitled "Oku no hosomichi emaki" (today an "important cultural object" at Kyoto National Museum) was based on a travel journal -- entitled "The Narrow Road to the Interior" -- kept by Matsuo Basho, written in the late 17th century. Basho's diary is considered one of the major texts of classical Japanese literature. This picture scroll is part of the genre called "haiga" (sketches used to illustrate the themes of haiku and haikai) and a number of books in this style followed by well-known artists in the "Narrow Road" tradition. The present work is one of the rarest in the genre (WorldCat locates only the 1983 reprint). It is illustrated by eleven double-page and three single-page illustrations, all delicately color-printed, of Matuso Basho and his travelling companion Kawai Sora. The woodblock calligraphy throughout is of the highest quality. In fine and fresh condition with excellent coloring. The first two leaves of Vol. I slightly soiled. .

The MINER'S OWN BOOK, Containing Correct Illustrations and Descriptions of the Various Modes of California Mining, Including All the Improvements Introduced from the Earliest Days to the Present Time

San Francisco: Published by Hutchings & Rosenfield, 146 Montgomfry [sic] Street, 1858. 1st Edition (Cowan I, p. 154; Cowan II, p. 431; Graff 2813; Greenwood 967; Howes M639; Kurutz 444a; Norris 547; Rocq 15965; Streeter 2839; Wheat 141). Publisher's original printed brown paper wrappers, sewn. Image of miner with pick to center front wrapper. Some age-toning & staining to paper. A few leaves with short horizontal splits to fore-edge, no doubt from 'thumbing'. At top of front wrapper, ownership signature of Matthew Leggett, who is presumed to be the individual employed with Bayley & Cramer, San Francisco photographers, during this period. A VG copy.. 32 pp. Illustrated with 30 cuts [1 to front wrapper, 2 adverts, 27 intratextual] by Charles Christian Nahl. this copy with the p. 23 cut, "Washing the Blankets", correctly oriented. 8vo. 9" x 5-3/4" Published by Hutchings, and thought to be by him the "first book of its kind", and presumed to have been issued for the Fraser river miners [per Cowan]. Much of the material first appeared in his Illustrated California Magazine for 1856 & 1857. The illustrations by Nahl, considered California's first significant artist, are "now recognized as classics." [Kurutz]. Regarding the inverted cut 'point', we quote a 1939 Midland catalogue on this issue, "A point without a point; for the book bears ample evidence of having been printed direct from type. In which case it is a safe assumption that the woodcut was correctly set in the first place; dropped out while in use, and was replaced up-side-down; the error not being discovered until a number of sheets had been run. As evidence of priority of issue we would suggest that the printed line, above the woodcut in the present copy, is coincident with the edge of the block, and thus demonstrates that the block was out of place---probably loose---at the time the sheet in this copy was printed. Anyway we’ll take our illustrations standing up, and we resent the intrusion of these half-baked typographical 'points' into the glorious field of Americana. So there! Mr. Cowan." In our opinion, Midland has a point about this point. ABPC shows no copies to auction these last 30+ years, with RBH showing their last in 1957, as offered by Goodspeed. Curiously enough, RBH does not record the Streeter copy, sold in 1968. Even so, given this track record, we feel comfortable saying, "Quite rare in the trade."

A compendium of Kafir laws and customs,

8vo., vii (1) 168pp., with three folding tables, original green cloth with printed spine label (the label largely defective, however), with an old light stain on upper cover. A very good presentation copy inscribed in ink by Maclean to Robert Vigne*, and with a coy note in a contemporary hand at head of title: "Not altogether fit for ladies". "This volume, the results of the author's efforts to form a compilation of facts concerning the native races, is regarded as one of the best in the subject, and contains many valuable papers by the Rev. H.H. Dugmore, and Messrs. Warner, Brownlee, and Ayliff. The geography, government, laws, and customs of the natives are fully described, and the mass of information thus presented is extremely useful to students of the habits of the aborigines of South Africa. The genealogical tables assist in explaining the somewhat complex system of the Kaffir laws of inheritance and descent, and a census of British Kaffraria in 1857 is appended." [Mendelssohn, loc.cit.] * Robert Vigne was one of the magistrates in British Kaffraria.

Octavo (9" x 6") bound half speckled leather with red label lettered in gilt to spine and four raised bands over marbled boards. Edited by J.S. Bell. (Abbey 655, Palau 329979) First edition. Gustavus Ferdinand von Tempsky was a Prussian adventurer, artist, newspaper correspondent and soldier in New Zealand, Australia, California, Mexico and the Mosquito Coast of Central America. He was also an amateur watercolourist who painted the New Zealand bush and the military campaign. In 1844 he was commissioned into his father's regiment in the Royal Prussian Army, possibly the Garde-Fusilier Regiment in which his brother, Benno Waldemar von Tempsky was a second lieutenant. In 1846, tiring of routine, Tempsky left the regiment after only nine months for the Prussian settlement on the Mosquito Coast of Central America. He accepted a commission to command a force of Mosquito Indians, which had been set up by Britain. In 1850 he went to the new California goldfields, but did not strike gold. In 1853 he returned to the Prussian colony, via Mexico, Guatemala, and Salvador, and later wrote a book, Mitla, about his journey.
