A new dictionary of the English language

London: Bell & Daldy. 1858. "New Edition, containing a supplement of new words at the back of each volume ; 2 volumes, 4to, pp. [38], 1183, [1], 59; [4], 1185-2221, [1], 61- 125; freshly bound in recent quarter brown calf over marbled boards, black morocco labels on spines. The most substantial lexicographical undertaking in England between that of Samuel Johnson and the O.E.D. ""First published as part of the Encyclopaedia Metropolitana (1818-37), it consisted of a great many illustrative quotations drawn from literature, but with relatively few and brief definitions … Richardson's approach was based on the notion that quotations alone, if sufficient in number, could serve to elucidate 'true etymological meaning.' He went far beyond Johnson in collecting quotations, beginning at the fourteenth century [Johnson went back only to the end of the 16th century] … Richardson sought by his vast collection of quotations to justify the preposterous theory of John Horne Tooke that each word had a single immutable meaning. In his own work, each word and its derivatives were given one etymology and one meaning. His etymologies were as preposterous as his theories, but his dictionary was of great interest to lexicographers because it foreshadowed the historical collections of quotations that were later to form the basis of the Oxford English Dictionary"" (Landau, Dictionaries, p. 66). Based on the ""historical principle"" of lexicography, this work formed an important link between Johnson and the O.E.D. Kennedy 6449; Vancil, p. 205."

        Exceedingly Rare Autographed Letter Signed

Akron, Ohio, 1858. unbound. Outstanding and exceedingly rare autographed letter signed, 4to, 2 1/4 pages, Akron, Ohio, June 28, 1858, giving his brother and sister information on his whereabouts and quoting a letter he has received from their father John Brown who is on the run and is secretly heading back to Kansas for what will be his very last visit with his family before departing to Harpers Ferry. In small part: "...Father in company with two other men left Cleveland for Kansas on the 21st. I remember your kindness, your self-sacrificing in the best interest in our success and safety...and that part of your hard earnings you have divided with father...I won't forget you! I want to go to your place - but father thought I had better come here for the present. I have found that my health...are [sic] in a great measure at my control in temporance [sic]. Received a letter from father yesterday in Lawrence, Kansas 1: 'Dear son's and wife - I reached Kansas on the 26th - last night and leave here today for the scene of our last troubles...of which it would seem are not over yet. Write me secretly sealed blank envelope...of all that will interest me, directing outside envelope to Rev. Adair Osawatamie, Kansas...your affectionate father...AND may the God of our fathers by your father. We are not at all discouraged with the changes of our affairs and all is not lost that is delayed. Work together for the good of those who love the lord.'" In closing, Owen writes: "...John I am very anxious to hear from you - be kind as to write to me, not expecting any answer...your brother Owen." Much more great content. This letter is complete with no loss of words or content. Pages 3 and 4 are attached to 1 and 2, however instead of being 4to, it was cut down to small 8vo. A remarkable letter written at the very height of the tensions that would arguably lead to the Civil War. Excellent condition. Third son of radical abolitionist John Brown and the only family member to escape from Harpers Ferry. A participant in the revenge raid at Pottawatomie in which the Brown Clan killed five pro-slavery adherents from Missouri and later fended off a raid by pro-slavery advocates at "Osawatomie," in which his unarmed younger brother was murdered in the street. Owen was one of seven participants who escaped from Harpers Ferry out of 41 by evading Robert E. Lee -- traveling through swamps, pursued by soldiers and citizens with dogs and guns. Two of the seven ventured to get food and were captured and hung.

Phantastes: A Faerie Romance for Men and Women

By George Mac Donald, Author of “Within and Without.” London: Smith, Elder and Co., 65, Cornhill, 1858. (The right of Translation is reserved). Pp.[iv]+323+[i (blank)]; publisher’s inserted 16pp. catalogue at end, dated September, 1858, headed “Works in the Press”, and including this title as the seventh entry; olive green near horizontal straight grain morocco cloth, ruled and blocked blind on sides, ruled, blocked, and lettered gilt on spine; t.e. uncut, others rough-trimmed; end-papers coated dark cream; binder’s ticket of ‘Westleys / & Co / London’ (Ball, 103 C) on back paste-down. Almost invisibly re-cased without disturbing the front end-papers; back end-papers neatly strengthened at hinge with matching paper (visible only on the paste-down); cloth of spine a trifle faded and showing slight wear at extreme head and tail; faint damp-streak to cloth of front cover; one gathering slightly proud, but not loose; removable light pencilled notes on margins of one page; otherwise a very nice copy. The first issue, with the earliest advertisements, and the probable first issued state of the binding. Wolff, 4296d, records a presentation copy sent direct from the publisher in this binding, though he also records an anomalous copy in blue-green ripple-grain cloth differently blocked and lettered, but with the same catalogue, which may have been a binding trial. Locke, ‘Spectrum’, p.146, recording a copy similar to this; Sadleir, 1479, recording a copy with advertisements dated July 1859. Both note the extreme scarcity of this title in good, or even acceptable condition - the Locke copy having the joints repaired and being otherwise only ‘fairly good’. Gatherings Q and R are here signed also with a dagger, which may perhaps indicate substitutions, revisions having possibly been made during the course of printing. Macdonald’s best known book, which may have had influence both on ‘The Night Land’ and some of the writings of Lord Dunsany. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

Map of Suffolk County, L.I., New York

Philadelphia: John Douglass, 1858. Wall map, lithograph with full original colour, backed on linen, with contemporary rollers, trimmed in modern red cloth, with light discolouration in upper right corner, in very good condition. 49 x 57 1/2 inches. A very rare map, and the the best nineteenth-century map of Suffolk County; the 'Gold Coast' of New York State. This map was constructed by Chace under the supervision of the Smith-French survey of New York, the most ambitious and advanced mapping project for any American state to date. Due to the county's excessively long and narrow form, Chace has chosen to divide the map into two parts, with the western part of the county shown at top, and the eastern at bottom. Interspersed are thirty-three inset plans of Suffolk towns, including Southampton, Easthampton, Bridgehampton, Amangansett, Sag Harbor, Riverhead, Islip, Stoneybrook, Sayville, Patchogue, Smith Town, Amityville, and Greenport. Hundreds of property owners are identified by name on the map proper and the insets. OCLC locates only one copy, at SUNY Stony Brook. Ristow, p. 388; OCLC 26960792.

Die Cellularpathologie in Ihrer Begründung auf Physiologische und Pathologische Gewebelehre

Berlin: August Hirschwald, 1858 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (222x138 mm). xvi, 440 pp. including half-title, title with copyright on verso, 144 wood engravings in the text, of which one full-page and several white-on-black. Later half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt, ownership stamp to half title, occasional mild spotting (half title stronger). Provenance: Prof. Hueppe, Dresden. ---- <br><br> PMM 307c; Dibner, Heralds of Science 132; Garrison-Morton 2299; Grolier/Horblit 99; Grolier Medicine 69; Heirs of Hippocrates 1892; Norman 2156 - FIRST EDITION OF THE FOUNDATION WORK OF CELLULAR PATHOLOGY AND &#39;ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOKS IN THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE&#39;, (Garrison-Morton). In this work, an almost verbatim transcription of a series of 20 lectures delivered at the new Pathological Institute in Berlin in February-April 1858, Virchow set forth the now universally accepted concept of disease as a state of conflict between healthy and diseased cells. Virchow&#39;s research into the function, structure and development of cells was made possible by technical improvements in the microscope and in biochemical techniques. &#39;For Virchow the microscope became the central tool for reducing pathological processes to alterations occurring at the cellular level. Hence, the cell became the fundamental living unit in both health and disease--a biological rather than a mechanical entity. Virchow&#39;s notion of cellular pathology implied that all the manifestations of disease could be reduced to disturbances of living cells. Moreover, according to Virchow&#39;s famous principle, &#39;omnis cellula e cellula,&#39; all cells originated from other cells. Cellular function, in turn, depended on intracellular physiochemical changes which were reflected in the varying morphology&#39; (DSB). &#39;Every morbid structure therefore consists of cells, which, according to this axiom themselves come from pre-existing cells. The seat of any disease must therefore be in the cell. On this basis, Virchow analysed disease and diseased tissue and proposed the idea that disease is a conflict between healthy and morbid cells. This was the beginning of modern pathology...&#39; (Grolier Medicine)..

Illustrations of Furniture, Candelabra, Musical Instruments from the Great Exhibitions of London & Paris with Examples of Similar Articles from Royal Palaces and Noble Mansions

London.: J. Braund.. 1858.. 48 black and white engraved plates, 18 x 13 inches, plates loose in later portfolio with ties. Foxing to title page and first and last two plates. The rather crude portfolio (brown paper-covered boards) was evidently fashioned when the original binding of the book disintegrated. In general the plates are very bright and clean. A wonderful compendium of elegant and ornate furntiture including a baby&#39;s "Cot", bookcases, desks, tables, chimney pieces, beds, sofas, etc. The Description of Plates identifies the date of each piece, what it is made of, its provenance and the exhibition at which it was displayed. There is also a list of Names of Subscribers. The very fine engravings are by E. Salandri after drawings by J. Braund. .

The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments, according to the Authorized Version, with marginal readings, and original and selected parallel references, printed at length, and the commentaries of Henry and Scott. Condensed by John M'Farlane, LL.D., Glasgow, with a series of maps and tinted landscapes illustrative of the lands of the Bible, from original sketches by David Roberts. (The practical and devotional Family Bible)

William Collins, Glasgow 1858 - Folio (13 3/4" x 10 1/2"). 1276pp. Original blind-stamped leather with gold borders on front and rear cover, gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. All gilt edges. Marbled endpapers. Blue ribbon marker. Frontispiece. Illustrated title-page. This 1858 edition of the Family Bible was the first to include lengthy parallel passages, which suggest the appropriate meaning of the text. In general, the marginal references simply used to indicate the chapter and verse, here these important notes, "comparing spiritual things with spiritual," are quoted at length. The condensed comments by Matthew Henry and Thomas Scott constitute the principal value of this edition. Illustrated with 31 tinted lithographed landscapes after drawings by David Roberts, 5 maps, 1 plan of ancient Jerusalem and its environs, as well as a family index. Index partly filled-in with handwritten list of names of the "George King" family with birth dates. Lithographed plates protected by tissue guards.         The Governayle of Helthe: with the Medecyne of Ye Stomacke. With Introductory Remarks and Notes by William Blades

London, Blades, East & Blades, 1858.. Reprinted in 1858 from William Caxton&#39;s edition of 1490, and LIMITED TO 55 COPIES ONLY. 8vo, 200 x 135 mm, 8 x 5¼ inches, frontispiece with tissue guard is a printed facsimile of the first page of Caxton&#39;s book, repeated within, the text consists of a complete reproduction of Caxton&#39;s print in gothic type and "an annotated reprint" in roman type, pages: viii, [1], 25, [1], [36], [40], followed by 8 pages of Glossary, plus the prospectus for his Treatise on the Typographical Works of William Caxton, bound in full publisher&#39;s black morocco, gilt border to covers, rebacked to match, no lettering or label, all edges red. Small neat repair to fore-edge of upper cover, edges of covers just slightly rubbed, tissue guard browned and with a small chip at fore-edge, new pastedowns, inner hinges and one inner joint at front strengthened with bookbinder&#39;s linen cloth, contents clean and bright, binding tight and firm. A very good copy. "An effort has been made, by the use of Types very similar to those employed by Caxton, to give this reprint something of the Appearance of the Original. To effect this still further, the Types were cast expressly in Pewter, which, from its Softness, yields an Impression resembling more the Productions of the early Printers than could be obtained from harder materials. Great care has been taken to make the Text an accurate Reproduction of the Original". (Preface). Fifteenth century books on health are very rare. This is a health maintenance manual focusing on how to keep men (not women) healthy, with occasional notes on ill-health. Both parts were published anonymously and The Governayle of Helthe has been variously attributed to John de Bordeaux and also to Bartholomaeus Montagnana, the younger, the Medecyne of Ye Stomacke has been attributed to John Lydgate. Caxton&#39;s edition was not reprinted until our edition of 1858 which is beautifully printed. William Blades the editor and publisher of our edition was deeply interested in Caxton and wrote the Life and Typography of William Caxton, England&#39;s First Printer, which was published in 1861-1863.         The Palm Land; or, West africa, illustrated.

Moore, Wilstach, Keys & Co., Cincinnati 1858 - Original cloth gilt, 8vo., pp. xi, (1), 13-456. Dozens and dozens of woodengravings in the text of which many fullpage plus a folding map. Corners and head and tail of spine bumped. Closed tear at the bottom side of the map. One page with a dogear. Further a very clean copy throughout with the spine a little sunned. Original blindstamped and gilt cloth. The gilt on the front board still very bright, the gilt on the spine a bit faded. A very peculiar book in that sense that it seems to be extremely rare. For this 1858 first edition there are no auction records, there are no copies in institutional libraries worldwide, including the British Library and the Library of Congress and there are no bibliographical entries. Most institutional libraries have a copy of the 2nd or 3rd edition, both published in 1859, or of later editions. Hess & Coger 5721 (for one of the 1859 editions). [Attributes: First Edition]

A Narrative of the Mission sent by the Governor-General of India to the Court of Ava in 1855, with Notices of the Country, Government, and People.

London: Smith, Elder, and Co., 1858 - Quarto (285 × 198 mm). Modern calf on marbled boards, dark blue morocco label, edges sprinkled blue. Ex-library copy, formerly in the Halifax Literary and Philosophical Society's Library with their small "C Library" stamp at the corners of the plates, which have been laid down on glazed linen, light browning and a scatter of foxing, but overall very good. Three-tint lithographic frontispiece and 3 similar plates, 10 single-tint, and 6 two-tint lithographs, 4 lithographed outline plans and one plate of architectural details, 3 full-page coloured maps, large folding general map at the rear. First edition. Rejecting a career in the law for which "his father had originally intended" him (ODNB), Yule trained at Addiscombe, and the Royal Engineers at Chatham, joining the Bengal Engineers in 1840 and being involved in many major surveying and civil engineering projects. In 1852 after a 3 year sabbatical "Yule returned to service in Bengal. Having fulfilled various tasks, including reports on the relatively inaccessible country between Aracan and Burma, and on the defences of Singapore, he was appointed under-secretary to the newly formed department of public works, with particular responsibility for the development of the railway system. His work on the railways was interrupted by an appointment in 1855 as secretary to Colonel Arthur Phayre's mission to Burma, which resulted in Yule's first widely acclaimed publication, A Narrative of the Mission to Ava, illustrated by his own sketches". Riddick considers that Yule's mixture of "diary entries personal observation describing the negotiations, the countryside, and historical and cultural aspects of Ava established a new level of understanding about Ava" (Riddick). Despite this, Yule is probably will always be best remembered for Hobson-Jobson, his much reprinted dictionary of Anglo-Indian. Abbey 408; Riddick 188 [Attributes: First Edition]

DR. KANE AT THE GRAVES OF SIR JOHN FRANKLIN&#39;S MEN. FOR SUBSCRIBERS TO THE NEW YORK "ALBION." 1858 [caption title]

[New York: Printed by R. Dalton, ca. 1858].. Engraving, 26 3/4 x 18 inches. Three very light stains in lower caption, not affecting image. Near fine. Matted. A striking print, presenting the scene of the famous arctic explorer, Elisha Kent Kane, standing before the graves of Sir John Franklin&#39;s men. The graves, dating from 1846 and located on Beechey Island, are for three seamen from the Franklin expedition who died. Kane is pictured in the frozen Arctic, looking to the left and standing before three grave markers with the names of the dead explorers. He is dressed head to toe in furs and carries a telescope. Large, dark glaciers rise out of the background and his ship, the Advance, is seen on the left. British explorer Sir John Franklin and his expedition of more than 125 men were lost and died during his third arctic exploration, around 1850. After a few years, several British and American groups set out to find them. Elisha Kane was the senior medical officer of the first United States Grinnell expedition in 1850, and commanded the second Grinnell expedition of 1853-55. His heroism on that expedition and the fame gained from his subsequent book, ARCTIC EXPLORATIONS, and lecture tour, launched him to international stardom. "ARCTIC EXPLORATIONS lay for a decade with the Bible on almost literally every parlor table in America" - DAB. Kane, who was of frail health due to childhood illness and was exhausted by his explorations and touring, died in Havana on his thirty- seventh birthday, in 1857. The present image was originally painted by James Buckingham Wandesforde (1817-1902), a Scottish-born Canadian artist best known for his portraits. He created the image shortly after Kane&#39;s untimely death, most likely as a tribute to the heroic explorer. The engraving was executed by D.G. Thompson, and the print was sent out to subscribers of the New York ALBION. DAB X, pp.256-57.

        CHARMED FAWN

1858. Paperback. 1. McLOUGHLIN PUB. THE STORY OF THE CHARMED FAWN. The title page reads NY: Elton & Co.. The front and rear covers read NY: John McLoughlin Publisher, no date, circa 1858. 12mo (5 1/8 x 6 1/2"), blue pictorial wraps, [24]p., nearly As New. Illustrated by Harrison Wier with 6 full page hand colored wood engravings, this was a title in the Pleasure Book series. John McLoughlin, Jr. had worked for R.H. Elton as a young man and he went on to work for his father, John Sr.. By then, John Sr. was in business with Elton. After a major fire, John Jr. set out on his own. "When he did he also bought out the stock, wood blocks and other materials of the firm Robert Elton.... Under the imprint of Elton & Company he [Elton] and McLoughlin began issuing toy books for children... (from a thesis on McLoughlin Brothers written by Julian Lapides). So this title is an example of the transitional books published before 1855 when John&#39;s brother came into the firm with name changing to McLoughlin Brothers. This copy comes from a 19th century shop whose contents were found intact. Rarely found in this condition.

        DOCTOR THORNE

1858. In Three Volumes. [In Vols II & III: Second Edition.] London: Chapman & Hall, 1858. Bound in 3/4 red morocco with black spine labels, and with marbled boards and endpapers. Mixed edition (first edition of Vol I, "Second Edition" of Vols II & III) of this early Trollope novel -- the third of the six "Barsetshire Novels," centering upon Frank Gresham and his love for Mary Thorne, whose past is a mystery. Of this title Walpole said, "There are... fire-and-thunder Trollopians who will die for DOCTOR THORNE. By not a few it is considered the best Trollope of them all."~The first edition was issued in late May 1858, and it is estimated to have consisted of only 750 copies (Sadleir devotes considerable effort trying to deduce why Chapman & Hall paid Trollope so much for this title and then produced so few copies). The book was a big hit and sold out in a fortnight, and 250 more copies were printed by early June, at about the same time the first "cheap" one-volume edition was being prepared for readers to buy (rather than rent, as with these three-deckers). Yet this was not your typical "second printing" masquerading as a so-called "Second Edition": this really was a second edition...~What a second edition! The printer&#39;s reader simply went at the text with a scalpel. Practically every signature in the three volumes was reset, and the total number of changes is upwards of 500. [Carroll Wilson quoted in Sadleir]~There would be no other three-volume editions after this one.~This set is bound in 3/4 red morocco with black spine labels and marbled boards (and endpapers); there are no ads (the original set would have had a catalogue at the end of Vol I), and there are no half-titles but there never were any for this title. Condition is just about fine. DOCTOR THORNE is ranked by Sadleir as the second-scarcest of all of Trollope&#39;s first editions (behind only THE MACDERMOTS OF BALLYCLORAN). See Sadleir (TROLLOPE) 7, & also pp. 265-266 & Addenda p. 2. All three volumes bear the penciled signature of Trollope bibliographer Walter E. Smith.
