Five MS Letters Signed, to the Secretary of State at the Office of Justice On paper, in Spanish

Sucre Folio, 8 pp.. 11 March – 12 May 1858 The president of the Bolivian Supreme Court writes concerning the receipt of official decrees (11 March), the salaries of court employees (6 April), the court's opinion in the matter of substitute judges in the civil section of the judicial system (9 April), the court's decision to press criminal charges against a lawyer who had impugned the dignity of the court (10 May), and the court's opinion regarding the official title of judges in certain criminal cases (12 May). The Court had just come through a period during which a military ruler had systematically dismantled the courts and undercut their authority and dignity. Olañeta had assumed his presidency only days before the first document in the collection was penned. Very good condition. A few small tears at folds.

Os Amores . . . .

Rio de Janeiro, Bernardo Xavier Pinto de Sousa, 1858. - 11 volumes bound in 1.@ 8°, contemporary green quarter morocco (extremities a bit worn), flat spine, gilt letter, with horizontal gilt fillets. Internally very fine. Presentation inscription on recto of front free endpaper: "Ao Exm° Am° Jorge Cesar de Figaniére, tributo de admiração ao talento, á evidição ao merito litterario," signed by the brother of the translator "J.F. de Castilho". Overall a fine copy. Lithographic portrait, 119 pp.; 102 pp., (1 blank l.); 103 pp.; 784 pp. [unnumbered blank leaf after p. 604]. *** FIRST EDITION of the first Portuguese translation of the @Amores. The translation, in volumes I-III, is followed by the lengthy @Grinalda Ovidiana, with extensive notes on the text, a guide to mythological figures and a life of Ovid. On the leaf immediately following the title-page of volume I, the translator alerts "adolescentes de um e outro sexo" that the present work contains "mysterios de iniquidade," and that if they read it despite his warning, they have only themselves to blame. (Could there be a better way to entice teenagers to read the classics?) The only earlier translation into Portuguese of any of Ovid's works appears to be Castilho's translation of the @Metamorphoses, of which only volume I was published, Lisbon, 1841. He also translated the @Fasti and the @Ars amatoria, Lisbon, 1862.Antonio Feliciano de Castilho (1800-1875) ranks as one of the three best Romantic writers in Portugal, along with Almeida Garrett and Herculano. He published numerous works of poetry and prose, founded and edited the @Revista universal Lisbonense (1841-45) and began the series "Livraria Classica Portuguesa," for which he wrote the studies of Bernardes and Garcia de Resende. His translation of Faust roused a heated controversy among students of German language and literature ("a questão faustiana"), and his 1865 condemnation of the young writers of Coimbra?Antero de Quental, Teofilo Braga, Vieira de Castro?for "nebulosidade" incited Quental to write Bom senso e bom gôsto.A native of Lisbon, Castilho went blind at the age of six but nevertheless earned a degree in law from Coimbra. Aside from his literary activities, he invented a new method for teaching children to read, the "methodo portuguez," which he attempted to implement while serving as Comissario Geral de Instrucção Primaria.*** Innocêncio I, 134; VIII, 132: listing only the first 2 volumes. Gonçalves Rodrigues, @A tradução em Portugal 8623. Not in Palha. Not in Azevedo-Samodães, Ameal, Monteverde or Avila-Perez. NUC: MH, MiU. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Szózat Igor hadjáratárul a palócok ellen. (H?sköltemény az oroszok ?skorábul.) Magyarította Riedl Szende. [The Tale of Igor's Campaign. Epic Poem From the Ancient Time of the Russians.]

      I. L. Kober. (On cover: Pest. Lampel Róbert.) [Printed in Prague by Friedrich Rohlí?ek.], Prága és Lipcse [Prague and Leipzig], 1858 - First Hungarian edition. Lampel's vignette on cover. In publisher's wrappers, printed in green. (9), 6-42 p., (14 [pages of advertisement of the publisher, printed by Jaroslav Pospe?il in Prague; and (8) p. advertisement of "Album. Bibliothek deutscher Originalromane".]). First Hungarian edition, early translation of one of the earliest Slavonic language writings "The Tale of Igor's Campaign". Translated by the Hungarian historian and linguist Szende Riedl (1831-1873) after the German edition. Riedl was an expert on the historical connections between the Slavs and the Hungarians, thus he found the story of Igor's campaign against the Polovtsians particularly important to be translated and introduced to the Hungarian public. The identity between the Polovtsians and the Cumans was recently proven by Riedl's colleague János Jerney, who even stated that their language was Hungarian and were the ancestors of the Hungarians. Riedl explains the importance of the text and its context in the ten-page foreword, that followed by the translation and the notes. "The Tale of Igor's Campaign" is one of the oldest Slavonic language text, a medieval epic poem from the late 12th century about the unsuccessful campaign of Prince Igor Svyatoslavich, prince of the Russian lands of Novgorod-Seversky against the Polovtsians (or Cumans). The tale was written anonymously around 1185 and its only manuscript, dated to the 15th century, was discovered in 1795 by Aleksei Musin-Pushkin and burned during Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812. Musin-Pushkin published the text in 1800 with the help of Alexei Malinovsky and Nikolai Bantysh-Kamensky, leading Russian paleographers of the time. It was first published in German in 1803 and in 1858 in Hungarian. Scarce, we could trace only three copies in institutional holdings worldwide. Artistically restored. In very good condition. In publisher's wrappers, printed in green First Hungarian edition. Lampel's vignette on cover. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The Defence of Guenevere and Other Poems

London: Bell and Daldy, 1858. First edition. Original brown fine-hatched cloth with embossed covers and gilt lettering on spine, original light brown endpapers. Headpieces and vignette designs. 248pp. Printed at Chiswick Press. Allan F. Vigers Copy, with his superb Nouveau-style bookplate on front pastedown, design by himself. "The architect Allan Francis Vigers took a highly individualistic approach to pattern design, informed by his skills as an illuminator... He specialized in intricate florals, composed of a mass of small flower heads, mounted like jewels on white or dark-blue backgrounds. At once naturalistic and highly artificial, his patterns featured typical English garden flowers... simply and accurately depicted, but arranged in consciously artful synchronized formations" (Lesley Jackson, Twentieth Century Pattern Design, Princeton, 2002). William Morris' first book and closely allied to the PRB movement. No ads, errata slip present. A superb copy with light sunning to spine, light wear to covers, internally fine, clean and bright with no signs of foxing.

Minimal angeschmutzt, kleinere Fehlstellen an den oberen Ecken. Provenienz: Süddt. Privatbesitz. Bd. II, Teil I, S. 15, vgl. Nr. 1.

The States of Central America; their geography, topograpy, climate, population

London: Sampson Low, Son & Co., 1858. First edition. Thick 8vo, 782 pp, with 3 large folding maps, 8 lithographic plates, and numerous woodcuts throughout. The contemporary hand coloring of the lithographs make it a particular attractive copy. Squier went to Nicaragua as the Charge d'Affaires to the Republics of Central America. His inquiring mind and passion for Indian antiquities -- heretofore exercised in his study of the mound cultures of the Mississippi Valley and the Indians of New York -- was vigorous in the execution of his tasks; he eventually wrote 5 or 6 books on the Central American states, and made a return trip in 1853 to study a proposed interoceanic railroad and pursue further his archaeological investigations. Later, he was appointed as U.S. Commissioner to Peru, where he made extensive studies of Inca remains, and published an important book on them. Many of the illustrations in his books are taken from photographs he himself made. In his busy life, he was a frequent contributor to Encyclopedia Britannica and was chief editor of Frank Leslie's publishing house.Squier was one of the foremost early students of Indian mounds and archaeological remains. Through Prescott's influence, he served for a number of years in Central America and Peru as diplomat. DAB notes that "he was honored at home and abroad as one of the most distinguished Americanists of the nineteenth century, and is perhaps the best single authority on the Central America of the period." This is a fine copy, hand colored, entirely free of the foxing that often plague the book due to the large amount of lithos and woodcuts. Bound in a later 3/4 dark red morocco over marbled boards.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Wien, 6. III. 1858.. 2 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. Folio.

De la Justice dans la révolution et dans l'église (Justice in the revolution and the church).

Librairie de Garnier Frères, Paris 1858 - Volume 1: Half title + TP + 1-520; Volume 2: Half title + TP + 1-544; Volume 3: Half title + TP + 1-612; 12 mo. First Edition.First Edition of Proudhon's Most Massive and Powerful Work - Completing and Fully Explicating His "Philosophy of the Revolution" - Seized and Suppressed by the Government Just Six Days After PublicationJust six days after publication on April 22, 1858, remaining copies of the book were confiscated on the grounds that it was "an attack upon public and religious morals." Proudhon was indicted, convicted and sentenced to three years, one month and fifteen days in jail and assessed a 4,000 franc fine. He fled to Brussels to avoid incarceration and remained there for most of what was left of his life. De la Justice is Proudhon's most massive and most powerful work. The book is written in letter-form, addressed to Proudhon's former fellow-townsman, the cardinal of Besançon, Mahieu, who was considered to be one of the most eloquent defenders of the Catholic faith. Here was a perfect foil since Proudhon was claiming that the church was the disruptive element that stood squarely between the people and justice. But the church is just the worldly representative of the true secret enemy of mankind, God who is the sources of power in this world. In attacking God and the church, he argued vehemently for his own theory of "immanent justice" as opposed to the prevalent Christian concept of "transcendental justice." This was the heart and soul of his "philosophy of revolution" which is clearly and elaborately explained throughout these three volumes. contemporary cloth backed speckled boards. Label to spine of each volume with gilt lettering on a black field. Volume 1 is lightly foxed throughout with some foxing to the initial and final leaves of Volumes 2 and 3. Overall, a very nice set.         [AWV 16]. La Muette de Portici. Autograph musical manuscript of the first six measures of the duet "Mieux vaut mourir," signed "D.F.E. Auber"

1 leaf (250 x 230 mm), verso blank. Notated in black ink on hand-ruled 18- stave music paper, lowest staff blank. With autograph signature ("D.F.E. Auber") at head, tempo "Allegro non troppo" above first measure and "No. 3" to upper right corner (originally "No. 2"— corrected, most probably by Auber). Untitled. Fair copy of the first six measures of duet no. 8, "Mieux vaut mourir," of Mazaniello [!Masaniello] and Pietro from act 2 of the opera. Provenance: The German composer and choral conductor Siegfried Ochs (1858-1929); Louis Koch (1862-1930), a jeweler in Frankfurt whose large collection of musical autographs, inherited by his daughter Marie (b. 1895) and son-in-law Rudolf Floersheim (1897-1962), remains legendary. In very good condition. . Not in Schneider. Kinsky, Manuskripte, Briefe, Dokumente von Scarlatti bis Stravinsky: Katalog der Musikautographensammlung Louis Koch (Stuttgart: Krais, 1953), p. 142. The complete autograph full score of the opera is at the Bibliothèque nationale, Paris. A grand opéra in five acts to a libretto by Eugène Scribe and Germain Delavigne, La Muette de Portici was first performed in Paris at the Opéra on February 29, 1828. The opera was Auber's greatest success, with the duet "Mieux vaut mourir" being particularly famous. "The history of grand opéra begins with La muette de Portici. The characteristics of the genre include a new degree of magnificence in the sets and sensationally dramatic technical stage effects, the culmination of each act in a large tableau and ingeniously staged crowd scenes. The opera provided new opportunities for the director, librettist, set designer and costume designer to work together, and they made a careful study of the historical background of the Neapolitan revolt. The climax of the final scene with the eruption of Vesuvius was a sensation, and its influence was felt in grand opéra from Meyerbeer and his contemporaries to WagnerÂ’s Götterdämmerung." Herbert Schneider in Grove Music Online. "An operatic subject of such liveliness had not existed before... Here was a 'grand opera,' a complete tragedy in five acts and all in music. No trace of stiffness, bathos, high-priestly dignity, and all that classical stuff was left; it was burning hot and ravishingly entertaining." Richard Wagner: Reminiscences of Auber (1871).

Autograph letter signed "H. Berlioz," possibly to Georges Hainl, conductor of the Paris Opéra

      - Berlioz was the leading French composer, conductor, and critic of his age. "In many senses the Romantic movement found its fullest embodiment in him, yet he had deep Classical roots and stood apart from many manifestations of that movement. His life presents the archetypal tragic struggle of new ideas for acceptance. and though there were many who perceived greatness in his music from the beginning, his genius only came to full recognition in the 20th century." Hugh Macdonald in Grove Music Online.Although Berlioz finished Les Troyens in 1858, it was not performed in its complete form until years after his death, in 1890. The première of Acts 3-5, which included several of the singers mentioned in this letter, occurred at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris on November 4, 1863. The performance mentioned in this letter may have taken place in late 1864 or 1865. ("Violetta"--i.e. the French version of Verdi's La Traviata--enjoyed 102 performances at the Théatre Lyrique between October 27, 1864 and 1865.) The intended recipient of this letter was perhaps Georges Hainl (1807-1873), conductor of the Paris Opéra and the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire from 1863 until 1872. 2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated ca. late October 1864-1865. In black ink. In French (with translation). An important letter in which Berlioz includes information for the first playbill of a projected concert performance of excerpts from his grand opera, Les Troyens. He lists the names and addresses of the singers who are to appear: Mme. [Anne] Charton- Demeur, Mlle. [Palmyre] Wertheimber, Mr. [Jules] Montjauze, Mr. [Louise- Émile?] Wartel, Mr. Péront, Mr. Legrand, and Mlle. Estagel. He also mentions a Mr. [?Prosper] Bagier, likely the director of the Théâtre- Italien in Paris. Finally, he includes a number of special woodwind and percussion instruments that must be added to the orchestra. "Here are the addresses and a short agenda. You will find the last five artists at the Théâtre Lyrique on evenings when they play Violetta. [You] will include the names of the artists only later, in order not to upset Mr. Bagier."Slightly worn and stained; creased at folds.

Autograph letter signed in full to arts administrator Richard Sternfeld

      - "[Wolf] intensified the expressive vocabulary of the lied by means of extended tonality and post-Wagnerian declamation while retaining the defining elements of the song tradition he had inherited from Schubert and Schumann. Profoundly responsive to poetry, he incorporated detailed readings of his chosen poems in the compositional decisions he made about every aspect of song: harmonic nuances, tonal form, melodic design, vocal declamation, pianistic texture, the relationship of voice to piano, etc. Seeking an art ‘written with blood’, he went below the surface of poetry – even where his musical purposes were inevitably distinct from the poet's – in order to recreate it in music of remarkable intensity, written, as he once proclaimed, for epicures, not amateurs." Eric Sams and Susan Youens in Grove Music Online.Richard Sternfeld (1858-1924) was a prominent arts adminstrator in Berlin at the time. A board member of the Wagner-Verein, he organized several performances of Wolf's works. The Berlin concert Wolf was planning at the time finally took place on January 8, 1894—but not as a "popular" concert. Siegfried Ochs, director of the Philharmonischer Chor, conducted some of Wolf’s choral-orchestral works. Three pages of a bifolium. 8vo (175 x 110 mm.). Dated Döbling [now part of Vienna], November 4, 1892. In black ink. In German (with translation). Wolf asks Sternfeld (who is not named in the letter but may be identified by circumstantial evidence) about the "popular concerts" series in Berlin, which Sternfeld had suggested as a venue for showcasing Wolf's music. He doubts whether the setting of these concerts was suited to the purpose:"Would you please, most esteemed [Sir], be so kind as to reveal to me the character of the so-called popular concerts in Berlin? Are your popular concerts such at which [the audience] is eating, drinking, and smoking? Of course such concerts would prohibit the performance of vocal music, and when you proposed a popular concert to me, you intended to perform my instrumental works only. In such a case a popular concert would not serve me well because, as you know, my specialty is vocal music. However, should it be otherwise and should the said concerts also include vocal music then I would of course prefer such a popular concert to one at the Singakademie, if only to save money. It also would appear that these popular concerts are held in the hall of the Philharmonic, which should not be underestimated."Creased at horizontal fold; short split to lower portion of central fold.

CROY GEBETBUCH DRoLERIEN - Faksimile Luzern

Luzern, Faksimile Verlag.
