In 1845, he set out on a journey to Tunisia and Libya, returning to Europe two years later by way of the Sinai Peninsula, travelling through Palestine, Syria, Turkey, and Greece. 'In 1849, on the recommendation of Bunsen and Ritter, and the Prussian ambassador in London, Barth was appointed to an expedition under the direction of the British explorer James Richardson, who had been selected by the British government to open up commercial relationships with the sub-Saharan states of North Africa' (Howgego). During this extraordinary five-year expedition, Barth explored large parts of the region, including the Libyan desert, the Sahara, and the Sudan, as well as becoming 'the first European to penetrate Agades officially' (Carr, The Nomad's Path, p. 30). The resulting five-volume work is one of the key works on North and Central Africa written during the 19th century, providing extensive information on the different languages, traditions, religious practices, and political institutions of the region.

Report on the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey Made Under the Direction of the Secretary of the Interior.

Washington Cornelius Wendell 1857 - "Report on the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey" With 346 Plates EMORY, William. H. Report on the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey, Made Under the Direction of the Secretary of the Interior. Washington: Cornelius Wendell, 1857. First edition. Three thick quarto volumes bound in two. Illustrated with 346 plates, many lithographed in color, plus charts, two map (one folding) and profiles. Publisher's original brown cloth, rebacked perserving the original spine with newer leather labels, decoratively blindstamped on covers, gilt-stamped on spines. Extremities lightly rubbed. Very good. One of the foundation works on the exploration and mapping of the Texas-Mexican border. Emory was first assigned to the Boundary Commission after the Mexican War. No sooner was the survey finished than the Gadsden Purchase necessitated a new survey, which is summarized in this work. Incorporated into these volumes, along with Emory's report, are numerous scientific reports by James Hall, T.A. Conrad, and others, as well as superb maps by Jekyll and Hall, and important views and plates after Schott, Weyss, and Vaudricourt. The commission undertook one of the first systematic studies of the topography and natural features of the area, and the boundary as surveyed has remained intact, with only minor alterations, for the last 125 years. Of special note are the twenty-five fine colored plates of birds, lithographed by Bowen & Company, included in the report "Birds of the Boundary" by Spencer Baird, and here present in fine state, as well as handsome color plates of Indians and scenery.         A handsome oil portrait, signed by the artist, of Washington Irving

In fine condition..27.5 x 21.5 inches in a simple (and probably original) wooden oak frame. On the back of the canvas are the large neat block letters identifying the subject. Charles A. Gray was born in Iowa in 1857. He painted portraits of Presidents McKinley and Garfield and playwright Eugene O'Neil, among others. This copy of the popular image of Irving was undoubtedly made to sell in his gallery. Gray made similar copies of other prominent American literary figures, including Harriet Beecher Stowe. A fine portrait of Irving after a famous photographic portrait that proliferated during the author's final years. The genesis of the photograph is not certain, but it was believed to have been taken circa 1850 by John Plumbe, sometime associate of Mathew Brady. Brady is known to have sold copies of the portrait in various sizes at his studio.

Edward Moxon, London 1857 - Superbly bound in full crushed green morocco with bold gilt embossed strapwork and floral design on both covrers and ornately on spine, by "J. Wright." John Wright was an accomplished bookbinder in the mid 19th Century whose bindings were described by Ramsden "a binder of the highest order." The Moxon Tennyson is heralded as containing the very first wide selection of art by the Pre-Raphaelites, only seven years after the publication of the Germ. With over 60 superb woodcut illustrations, the edition was reprinted many times in following years, but the original 1857 edition, with a medallion portrait of Tennyson by Thomas Woolner as frontispiece, remains the book of choice for any PRB collector. A superb fine copy with no browntoning or wear to any of the pages. Binding is also fine, with very minimal wear to top and bottom of spine. Scarce thus. [Attributes: First Edition]

Journal of the Constitutional Convention, of the Territory of Minnesota, Begun and Held in the City of Saint Paul, Capital of Said Territory, on Monday, the Thirteenth Day of July, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty-seven

St. Paul: Earle S. Goodrich State Printer, Pioneer and Democrat Office, 1857 - 209 p. Appendixes include the Enabling Act; Legislative Act Providing for the Expenses of the Constitutional Convention; the Constitution of the State of Minnesota, an Amendment to the Constitution, approved March 9, 1858; Vote upon Constitution, with tallies by county, and the volume also has an Analytical Index to the Constitution of Minnesota. H.H. Sibley, later a governor of the state, was elected president pro tem. This is the journal of the Democrats' Constitutional Convention. Theodore C. Blegen, author of Minnesota: A History of the State (University of Minnesota Press, 1963), explained "., Minnesota had two constitutional conventions [one Democrat, the other Republican], both functioning at the same time in the same building." The two never met as a single body, but eventually the two official, signed, constitutions were produced and still exist separately. However, a joint committee worked out a compromise that still serves the state, with some amendments agreed to by the populace. Original buckram [?] cover with pasted label, very good with a few light spots, small dent in upper edge of back cover, three very tiny worm or moth holes at back spine. The first 64 pages are browning, but not brittle; the remaining pages are very, very good. There are two spots and some light foxing at endpapers. An inscription is clearly written but a little hard to decipher, but it may have said , "Mr Wilford J. Whitefield from [or to?] his daughter Mrs. John H. Law," with additions indicating that the volume was presented to the Minnesota Historical Society, with the penciled date 12 Oct. 35. The seller offering this book purchased it some years ago as part of a large lot for which MHS took bids from booksellers. Not listed in Library of Congress catalog [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Ambrotype Portrait of John D. Rockefeller

Cleveland, Ohio: Wiliam C. North, c. 1857-1858 - ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAITS OF THE 19TH CENTURY. Sixth-plate ambrotype (3 3⁄4 x 3 1⁄4 in.), with Rockefeller?s cheeks hand-tinted. Oval brass mat and ornate brass retainers in decorated thermoplastic case with hidden single clasp; decorated red velvet lining. Old manuscript note reading ?J. D. Rockefeller Born July 8, 1839 at Richford, N. Y.? Engraved on the retainer is the photographer?s imprint: ?Wm. C. North Cleveland, O.? Minor specking to painted black areas; lacking seal; one large chip and several minor chips to case. Very good condition. This famous portrait of John D. Rockefeller is the earliest known photograph of the greatest titan of American business and industry. When he sat for this photograph in 1857 or 1858, the 18-year-old Rockefeller was working as a bookkeeper in Cleveland. He began his own business in 1859, built his first oil refinery in 1863, and established Standard Oil in 1870, revolutionizing the nascent petroleum industry. Rockefeller was the wealthiest man in history and the first great modern philanthropist. As a percentage of the United States economy, no other American fortune has ever come close to that of Rockefeller. Apart from the immense fortune his amassed (perhaps $1 billion at the turn of the century) and the national economy he helped fuel with Standard Oil and its descendants, Rockefeller established the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research and the Rockefeller Foundation, which for almost a century have been leaders in their fields. ?The rise of the Standard Oil men to great wealth was not from poverty. It was not meteor-like, but accomplished over a quarter of a century by courageous venturing in a field so risky that most large capitalists avoided it, by arduous labors, and by more sagacious and farsighted planning than had been applied to any other American industry? (Allan Nevins). Rockefeller chose this photograph to be the frontispiece to his autobiography, Random Reminiscences of Men and Events, published in 1909 when he seventy. In that book the portrait appeared with the caption: ?Mr. John D. Rockefeller at the age of eighteen.? The Rockefeller Archive Center holds a copy of this image printed on paper (presumably created when the ambrotype was unsealed in order to create the frontispiece for Random Reminiscences). This is one of the most valuable 19th-century American photographic portraits and a centerpiece of any collection of capitalism. Provenance: Rockefeller?s daughter Alta Rockefeller Prentice (1871-1962) and her husband, noted New York Republican Party official Ezra Parmelee Prentice (1863-1955), with a cut business card bearing a partial inscription: ? [PARME]LEE PRENTICE / 5 West 53rd Street.? Prentice married Rockefeller?s daughter Alta Rockefeller Prentice in 1901, and this photograph descended to their daughter Mary Adeline Prentice Gilbert (1907 ? 1981) and her husband Benjamin Davis Gilbert (1907 ? 1992).
