        RECOLLECTIONS OF A DETECTIVE POLICE-OFFICER

London: J & C. Brown & Co., [1856]., 1856. First edition. First edition. First edition of this Queenâ??s Quorum title (#2, preceded only by Poeâ??s Tales in the history of the detective short story. A rare book to find in the original yellowback format; original covers laid down, lacking the spine, former owner's small name stamp on front pastedown sheet and a small inked number on the front fly leaf, else a very good copy with interior clean. "Waters" is identified as a detective in the Metropolitan police and many of his cases are reported in this book, which is quite readable. This book is a result of the publicity and public relations of the new Metropolitan Police which had been established in the 1820s. An interesting and early historical book in the early days of crime and mystery fiction. Also an early Haycraft/Queen Cornerstone mystery title and a rare book. Housed in a cloth clamshell case with titles stamped in red on the spine and front cover of the book reproduced on the front of the case.

(Wikipedia)

Voyennyie rasskazy [i.e. The War Stories]

St. Petersburg: Tipografiya glavnogo chtaba e.i.v. po voenno-uchebnym zavedeniyam, 1856. [4], 382, 1 pp. 19,5x13 cm. Contemporary quarter leather. Raised bands, the title, author's name and previous owner's initials gilt on the spine. The first book by the author. Rare. According to N. Smirnov-Sokolskii it took him 'quite a while' to find this book for his collection. The collection of stories were written by Tolstoy when he was serving in Sevastopol during Crimean War. The short story Sebastopol in December of 1854 quickly became popular among the readers in Russia and even Emperor Nicolas I asked to «take care of the talented officer». That was the beginning of recognition on national level for 28-year-old author. Tolstoy's impressions during this war later were used in 'War and Peace'. The roots of the pacifist and anti-patriotic ideas that he formulated later in his life also lie in this book. The last copy that was sold at auction went for 34850 GBP (Christie's, Nov 21, 2012). Smirnov-Sokolskii. 1190; not in Kilgour.

Sense and Sensibility; Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

Richard Bentley 1856 - Two volumes, being vols I and IV of ?The Works of Miss Austen? (so titled on spines). Half titles, additional engr. titles. Orig. purple bead-grained cloth, gilt by Westleys a little rubbed. WITH: 4pp ALS from W. C. Macready to his daughter, Cecilia Benventura, later wife of Frederick O?Bryen Horsford, pinned to leading free endpaper of Sense and Sensibility and her ownership signatures in both volumes. See Gilson, page 229 for this reprinted set of the five ?Standard Novels?; the fact that it is a set is only indicated on the spines. The long, affectionate, ALS, June 3rd 1865, Wellington Square, Cheltenham, 58 lines on 4pp, is from the great actor and friend of Dickens, William Charles Macready, 1793-1873, commending Austen to his daughter when she was 18, two years before her marriage. ?My own most darling Butty . I would not send this little volume without a word or two . I promised to send it to you and shall take the opportunities as they may offer of forwarding you other volumes of Miss Austin?s (sic) works. I do not know better teachers, than they are, to the young for the minds? regulation and the formation of manners. The style is simple and lucid, and the satire keen and instructive.? Macready refers at length to Pride and Prejudice: ? unless you read these stories to think upon them - to picture the characters before you - to draw a moral from them, and make examples to yourself from them - seeing in others what would be repulsive in yourself, I may as well keep the books at home. There is one called Sense and Sensibility, which if you have not got, and are unable to get, I shall (D.V.) send out to you. In it is a character, Elinor, that I should most particularly commend to your attention .? and compares her favourably to her sister Marianne. ?Elizabeth learns wisdom, as you will see in Pride and Prejudice, and becomes happy by growing wise.? Macready refers to his daughter Katie ?correcting her proof sheets? and preparing for a visit to Glasgow and sends a ?kiss and a hug? from Baby . ?God for ever bless you, my own darling, darling Butty . your truly affectionate father W.C. Macready?. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The accuracy of hiswork is attested to by the contemporary naval biographer W.R.O'Bynre and they enable a clear impression to be gained of thepersonalities being dealt with. . Pearce's achievement was thathe put the flesh upon the bones of the subject, and for that hisworks have placed polar historians in his debt". I.R. Stone, PolarRecord, 1988. Between 1851 and 1877, Stephen Pearce (1819-1904),painted, among other subjects, portraits of most of thedistinguished 19th century British Arctic explorers. The ArcticCouncil discussing a plan of search for John Franklin is his mostfamous painting. The National Portrait Gallery catalogues 25 ArcticPortraits.

The Ship-Builder’s Manual, and Nautical Referee.

NY: by the Author, 1856. x. Two vol. in one. iv, 200; 188, 2,2, pp. Sepia frontispiece, b/w plates. This is a rare work, not to be confused with the earlier (1850) and more common “Treatise on Marine Architecture.” In this book Griffiths concentrates less on the theoretical and more on the technical “nuts and bolts” aspects of construction. He includes material on timbers and timbering, scantlings, fastenings, spars, ground tackle, sails and rigging, and much more of the kinds of information that would be useful to an actual shipwright. This book also contains 17 sets of lines and diagrams. Brewington says, “Griffiths works of great value. Contain many plates of lines, details, masting rules, tables of off-sets, etc.” Brewington Bib. NYPL list p. 315. This is the second, expanded, edition (first was 1853), with new material and four index pages. Bound in original quarter leather over boards with gold spine lettering. Title page lightly foxed, with private owner’s embossed stamp in lower right. Scattered light foxing, with occasional text pages more heavily foxed. A very good copy of a very scarce book. WorldCat shows only six American libraries holding copies.

London: J. King, 1856. OCLC (copies at the NYPL and Harvard Theatre Collection only; another copy at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London). No copies recorded in ABPC as having been sold in the last 40 years. Piccolomini first performed the role of Violetta in La Traviata in Turin in 1855 to great acclaim. She performed the same role in London at Her Majesty's Theatre for the first time on May 24, 1856, also with much success. The present publication was most likely inspired by her London performance. Forrester, a noted English artist and illustrator, is especially noted for his well-executed anthropomorphic caricatures of dancers and others.. Oblong folio. Full dark red textured cloth boards with titling gilt to upper, original gray wrappers with printed titling within decorative border bound in. Four etched plates of scenes from Verdi's opera La Traviata, featuring Marietta Piccolomini (1834-1899), each with printed titles and signed in the plate by the artist. 156 x 122 mm. + wide margins, unnumbered and uncoloured. With tissue guards. With 19th century armorial bookplates of John Ayris and Henry A.A. Thorn to front pastedown.         Ye chronicles of Gotham. Buik ye first

imprinted by Andrew Foulis, and sold by him at his shop in the Westergate, and all buiksellers, Glasgow 1856 - First edition (?), 12mo, pp. 110; 22 plates; original brown cloth, gilt-stamped on upper cover with an oval ornament with the motto "Let Glasgow Flourish"; front hinge cracking, else very good. This copy with an ownership signature of "Wm. Connell, Glasgow 1877." Not common: 5 in OCLC as of 3/16, only Stanford in the US who mistakenly attribute this work to Richard Grant White who did in fact write in 1871-72 The Chronicles of Gotham, a political satire of New York City. "The book may be viewed as the comic history of Gotham [almost certainly Glasgow] during several years, 1852 to 1856. The writers have avoided giving names, and the dramatis personae have to be learned from the narrative" (from the prefatory note to the 1856 edition ostensibly printed at Glasgow). This edition bears the subtitle "Or the facetious history of official proceedings." Henry Sotheran & Co. catalogue 516 (June 24, 1892) attributes the book to the Rev. Dr. Smith. Another edition, "printed and published for ye subscribers at Frog Terrace," with the fictitious date of 1690, bears the subtitle: Being a Fictitious Narrative of a Pilgrimage Through the Land of Gotham: with an Account of the Local Wars which Occurred There. With Illustrations." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
