Apotheose W. A. Mozart - Verherrlichungsblatt Mozarts, zeigt den Komponisten vor der an der Orgel spielenden Patronin der Musik, der "Heiligen Cäcilia".

      - Stahlstich v. Eduard Schuler n. - Sehr selten! Zum Künstler: Th.- B. XXX, S. 322.

Punch's Pocket Book (long run of 25 volumes)

1856 - LEECH, John. Punch's Pocket Book for 1857 [to 1881], Containing Ruled Pages for Cash Accounts and Memoranda for Every Day in the Year; an Almanack; and a Variety of Useful and Valuable Business Information. London: Punch Office (Bradbury & Evans), [1856-1880]. 25 volumes. 12mo, original full wallet-style straight-grain morocco (in various colors), front gusseted pockets, all edges gilt. Housed in two custom-made "book-shelves." $4500.Lengthy unbroken run of these wonderful 19th-century personal calendars and almanacs, from 1857 to 1881, with hand-colored folding frontispieces, illustrated title pages, and numerous in-text wood-engravings by John Leech and John Tenniel.Twenty-year mainstay artist at Punch and illustrator of Dickens' Christmas Carol (1843), caricaturist John Leech had studied with George Cruikshank and eventually developed "a convention of social humor that was to last until the 1920s" (Houfe, 207). "He comes, for practical purposes, between Cruikshank and Du Maurier, and in that order plays an indispensable part in the progressive transformation of humorous art from the broad brutalities of the earlier men to the gentler and more subdued satire now in vogue" (DNB). Leech's collaborator on Punch's Pocket Book was John Tenniel, who succeeded him upon his death in 1864 and later gained fame as the illustrator of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1866) and Through the Looking Glass (1872). He was ably assisted by Charles Keene and Linley Sambourne, both members of the Punch staff. First published in 1846 (with illustrations by Thackeray), the annual Pocket Book "was decidedly a welcome Christmas present, and it had a considerable, though, as it ultimately proved, an insufficient sale. It was a costly affair, as, apart from the expenses of the illustrations, there was a folding frontispiece, done by John Leech in colors; it was neatly bound in morocco, with a tab loop to fasten it; and the honorarium for stories". was at the rate of a guinea a page. "˜Now, gentlemen,' Mark Lemon [the editor of Punch] used to say to us as we sat round the table at dinner on the penultimate Wednesday in November""'Walk up! Walk up! Stories! A guinea a page! Be in time!" (Sir Francis Cowley Burnand). This is an unbroken run of 25 Punch's Pocket Books, from 1857 to 1881, in their original bindings and containing some of Leech's most admirable images, at once broadly humorous and exquisitely graceful. His work for Punch "constitutes the main monument of his genius" (DNB). Occasional bookplate. The 1857 and 1875 issues contain a number of original pencil and pen-and-ink drawings in Leech's style.Interiors generally quite clean (many with owner annotations), several bindings with moderate rubbing (four with some loss of spine, several with splits near tabs). A very scarce run (even Tenniel's own set lacked a volume), in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        CHAPMAN'S SECTIONAL MAP OF MINNESOTA

Milwaukee: Dyer & Pasmore, 1856. Large colored folding map, 29 3/4 x 23 1/2 inches. Neatly ex-lib., with small, unobtrusive stamp on verso of map, and old shelf label on spine. Overall a very good copy, with a single straight closed tear without loss, laid into original 16mo. green cloth boards, stamped in blind and gilt. A slightly later version of this important Minnesota map, drawn by Silas Chapman. The present incarnation, published by Dyer & Pasmore, differs from an earlier version published by Chapman himself, also in 1856. The present copy reflects the boom in Minnesota's population and economy brought on by the lucrative logging trade. The newest western and northern counties are named and drawn, and the logging region along the north shore of Lake Superior is shown in greater detail than in an earlier state of the map. This version not in Rumsey nor in Phillips' MAPS. Rare. CHECKLIST OF PRINTED MAPS OF THE MIDDLE WEST TO 1900 (MINNESOTA), p.124.

[SPEECH] DELIVERED BY RICHARD H. JACKSON BEFORE THE PEOPLE OF STOCKTON AND WARD'S GROVE TOWNSHIPS, JUNE 28TH, 1856. READ AND REFLECT!

[Galena?:. 1856]. 17, [1 blank] pp. Caption title [as issued]. Stitched. Untrimmed and uncut. Widely scattered light foxing, Very Good Plus. "A defense of Douglas and the Kansas-Nebraska Act, a justification of slavery, and a vitriolic attack on the abolitionists. The townships are in Jo Daviess County. Jackson was a Galena attorney who had moved from the South in 1852" [Byrd]. The County Seat is Galena. Jackson gave his scarce Speech several weeks after the Democrats had nominated James Buchanan for the Presidency. Stephen A. Douglas, Illinois Democratic Senator and author of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, had dropped out of the running during the balloting for the sake of unanimity. Jackson claims here, with learned legal arguments, that the Missouri Compromise of 1820 did NOT foreclose further Congressional decisions about slavery in the Territories. That "disgusting subterfuge" is argued by opponents of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which permitted each Territory to decide the issue for itself. Resorting to Biblical as well as legal authority, he asserts that Negroes have been "'cursed' to be the servant of the white man." He denounces the "treasonable harangues" of Abolitionists, who are "intent upon the destruction of the Union." The great Democratic Party stands for "equal and exact justice for all WHITE men." Byrd 2482 [1- MoK]. OCLC 7494253 [3- Chicago Hist. Mus., U TX, St. Cloud State], 14276151 [1- Lincoln Pres. Lib.] [as of October 2014]. Not in Eberstadt, LCP.

Integral publishers advert leaves at the end of each volume (iii, i, ii) but bound without the publishers catalogue found in some copies of volume one. Some minor foxing to a few pages but generally a very good clean copy finely re-bound by Bayntun of Bath. Half brown morocco. Spines with raised bands, each with gilt decoration. Compartments double ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Tan cloth on boards Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. A lovely copy in a fine quality, highly attractive leather binding. The letter is undated but circa 1859 and discusses, among other things, the publisher Alexander Macmillan's approval of Clarence Dobell's illustrations for her new book, Our Year: A Child's Book, which was published by Macmillan in 1860. The book was dedicated to "Nora and Alice". She asks Alice to help her by gathering facts about the countryside "whatever a country child should look for or have noticed in walks every month" for the book which is to set out in 12 parts, each relating to one month of the year. A lovely copy with a charming contemporary letter to the Author's God Daughter and dedicatee of one of her best loved Children's books.

She was born at Beverley, Yorkshire, and showed an early interest in literature. She became a prolific and versatile writer, producing in addition to her lively and well-written novels many books on travel, and others dealing with historical subjects. She was a keen observer, and her travel to the East gave her an accurate and deep knowledge of the peoples and manners of the East. To modern readers she is probably best known for her books on her travels in Turkey, which are some of the earliest works by a woman on this area. In 1836 she traveled to Constantinople with her father, Major Thomas Pardoe. This voyage inspired her book The City of the Sultan (1836). Later she collaborated with the artist William Henry Bartlett to produce The Beauties of the Bosphorus (1839), an illustrated account of Constantinople. Lady Arabella; or The Adventures of a Doll would appear to have been her only children's book.George Cruikshank (1792-1878) was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience.

Autograph letter signed ("David Livingstone"). Hamilton, 31. XII. 1856.

1856. 8vo. 2 pp. on double leaf. Addenda. To Joseph Robertson, Chairman of Hamilton Council, agreeing to attend the forthcoming ceremony to mark his receiving the Freedom of the Borough: "I am sorry to find I am troubled by wheezing today and as I never felt any pleasure in hearing a wheezing speaker and suppose others feel similarly I hope only a few sentences will be expected on the occasion. I am grateful for the kind forethought exhibited in asking few persons to be present [...]". - Light dust-staining overleaf, fol. 2 with Robertson's contemporary endorsement ("Dr Livingstone/ African Traveller"). Together with a printed 8vo admission ticket to the ceremony, and a letter from Robertson to his daughter Ella (2 pp.). - Having only recently returned from Africa, Livingstone was spending Christmas with his mother and family in Hamilton, his father having died that February; Hamilton of course being near Blantyre, his birthplace. The present owner is the great-great-grandson of Joseph Robertson, responsible for conferring the freedom of the borough on him. Given that very few people were invited to the ceremony, it is likely that correspondingly few copies of the invitation, an example of which is included here, were printed. Also accompanying the letter is a later note by Robertson to his daughter, recalling that "At a subsequent Soiree or Conversazione at which I also presided [...] I first suggested that a large district, shewn on the sketch map of his explorations, which he produced, should be called Livingstonia, instead of the more modest name he had adopted [...] The suggestion was received by the very large audience, with Great Cheering".

NARRATIVE OF AN EXPLORING VOYAGE UP THE RIVERS KWO'RA AND BI'NUE (Commonly Known as the Niger and the Tsadda) in 1854

London: John Murray, 1856. First edition. With a folding map, a large folding plan of the steamship “Pleiad”, a frontispiece engraving of said steamship, and a vignette titlepage . 8vo, very handsomely bound to correct period style in three quarter tan calf over marbled boards, the spine with gilt ruled raised bands and contrasting red and green morocco labels lettered and ruled in gilt, a.e.g. xvi, 456 pp. including appendices. A fine copy, internally with only the lightest of occasional spotting or toning, fresh and clean, the binding in excellent order, all plates in very appealing condtion. RARE FIRST EDITION IN FINE CONDITION. RARELY ENCOUNTERED THUS. Baikie was member of the government-sponsored Niger expedition of 1854, joining on as a surgeon and naturalist aboard the iron screw schooner “Pleiad. After the death of its captain, Baikie assumed command of the ship. Under his command, the exploratory steamship made the first successful navigation up the Niger and its principal tributary, the Benue, traveling over two hundred and fifty miles of previously uncharted water. The book is an important and detailed description of the travels complete with appendices relating to medical, natural history, commercial, geographical, philological, ethnological matters, it is also an exciting and well written narrative. Perhaps the most important of Baikie’s many observations was that of the value of quinine in preventing malaria, not a single one of the Europeans under Baikie’s command on the “Pleiad” died of fever.

Pike's Illustrated Catalogue of Scientific and Medical Instruments, Second edition Enlarged Volume 1 ONLY

New York: Benjamin Pike, 1856. First Printing. Cloth. First Printing. ix (1st blank), [10]-394, [4-blank] pages. Volume 1 ONLY of 2 volumes. In the original cloth with gold gilt embossed front panel illustration of scientific instruments. An exlibrary copy with several large bookplates affixed to front pastedown and front flyleaf. Properly withdrawn. Original yellow endpapers. Two institutional stamps to rear of frontispiece and title page. Pages 61-82 have creasing to the lower corner and some edge fraying with a bit of marginal loss to paper (not affecting any text or images). Corners worn at tips as normal with boards showing through. The spine panel is frayed at top and bottom. A previous owner did some hand coloring to the spine panel tops and rear gutter. While not overly offensive, the spine could be rebacked and the original spine laid down to remove this enhancement - binding is sound as is, which is unusual given the propensity for the spine panel on these to come loose when the cloth at the edges wears through. Still presents reasonably on the shelf, with spine lettering bright and front board decoration bright and clean. Cloth. Perhaps the best scientific instrument catalogue published in America. Highly illustrated, providing an excellent reference for this maker and the items carried in New York in the middle of the 19th century. A first printing of the second (and best) edition, expanded from the first edition published in 1848.

THE ENGLISH STRUWWELPETER or Pretty Stories and Funny Picturers for Little Children.

Leipsig, Friedrich Volckmar, and London at the Agency of the German Literary Society, circa 1856. NINTH ENGLISH EDITION circa 1856 after the 19th German edition, 245 x 200 mm, 9¾ x 7¾ inches, original buff (or cream?) card covers, wide decorative border on both covers, vignette on lower cover of 2 old people and 3 children, lettered on upper cover only. 24 pages of hand coloured illustrations in the design of the original edition: Peter's hair hangs down over his face (but no chamber pot under Frederick's bedside table). Recased long ago with 19th century dark roan reback, first 4 pages mounted on thin linen. Corners worn with 20 mm (¾") chips to surface paper, boards grubby along edges, a few small water marks to boards, inner paper hinges cracked, endpapers spotted, large closed tear to front endpaper repaired with archival tape. Small piece cut from top margin of first page, inscription below it dated April 1856, minute wormhole to top corner of first 2 pages, margins slightly fingermarked, occasional light margin soiling. A previous owner or his/her parent has tried to wash the blood which drips from Conrad's mutilated hand, resulting in a bit of a smear across the top of the page, smudging the tailor's trousers also. Still a decent bright copy of a very scarce early English edition. After about 1859 the illustrations were changed to show Struwwelpeter with a mop of wavy hair, as found in the reprints of today, none of it over his face.         "Boquet Album" of Mollie E. Walker

Harris County, Georgia. 1856-1865. Dark brown leather album with stamped gilt decorations and the words "Boquet Album" on the front cover measuring 8.5" x 6". Good only with a chipped crown, boards worn and near detaching. A Boquet Album started by Mollie Walker of Georgia just before the advent of the Civil War and continuing into the beginning of the War, with entries dated between 1856-1865. Walker collected handwritten letters, verse, poetry, essays, and floral illustrations from her friends, mostly women, stating on the first page, "my album is my garden spot, where all my friends may sow." Most of the writing is copied versions of famous texts, scripture, poems, adages, most having to do with death and the afterlife, presumably engendered by the deaths of friends and acquaintances in the War, as well as effusive essays on friendship, all dedicated to "Miss Mollie" at the beginning of the passages. A woman named Amanda writes, "lest cypress trees and willows wave, to mark the lonely spot; but all I ask to deck my grave shall be, "forget me not." Another quote dated 1865 reads, "it is not all of life to live or all of death to die."An intriguing look at the sentiments, fears, and aspirations of women during the heart of the Civil War South. .
