        Gesammelte Abhandlungen zur wissenschaftlichen Medizin.

. Frankfurt am Main, Meidinger Sohn, 1856, 8°, XIV, 1024 pp., zahlr. Holzschn., 3 z.T. handcol. Taf., feiner Halbleinenband im Stil der Zeit.. Erste Ausgabe. - - Rudolf Virchow is the 'most prominent German physician of the nineteenth century' (DSB) and the founder of modern pathology. Gesammelte Abhandlungen is a collection of papers published between 1846 and 1853, and includes 'the first clear description of thrombosis and embolism' with 513 pages, his very important articles on white cells and leukemia (in which Virchow gave the disease its present name), and discussions of developmental pathology, gynaecological subjects and diseases of newborn babies. - Garrison-Morton 3006 & 3064; Heirs of Hippocrates 1891; Norman 2155; Waller 1005.

San Francisco: Printed by Monson, Valentine & Co., 1856.. xxxix,[1],140pp., followed by [8]pp. of ads. Original half sheep and printed green boards, spine gilt. Boards rubbed, stained, and edgeworn. Bookplate on front free endpaper. A touch of occasional foxing or tanning, but generally quite clean and neat internally. A very good copy. In a cloth chemise and half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. A very nice copy, in original condition, of an early and rare Sacramento directory. This is the fourth and last of Colville's annual Sacramento directories (the first was published in 1853) and only the fifth Sacramento directory overall. Why Colville referred to this 1856 directory as "Volume VI" on the titlepage is unknown. It is the most substantial Sacramento directory to date, and the first to feature biographical sketches of notable residents, as well as descriptions within the directory of certain businesses, fire companies, churches, etc. The directory is prefaced by a lengthy description of the city, its civic structure, public utilities, and private businesses. The front board is taken up by an advertisement for Wells Fargo's banking and express services, and a multitude of ads appear throughout the text. Included are notices for druggists, hotels, theatres, stone cutters, attorneys, machinists, stage and steam companies, bakeries and ice vendors, booksellers, and more. Prominent among the ads is a full-page notice for Stanford Brothers merchants, operated by Leland Stanford, who would become one of the "Big Four" railroad barons, serve as governor of California, and found Stanford University. "Rare" - Quebedeaux. QUEBEDEAUX 49. ROCQ 6522. GREENWOOD 730. GRAFF 843. SPEAR, p.327. COWAN, p.171.

Washington. 1856.. Three volumes. Ninety tinted lithographic plates, maps (some folding), and numerous in- text woodcut illustrations. Original cloth, stamped in gilt and blind; first and third volumes rebacked, original backstrips laid down; second volume recased. Old library stamp on each titlepage. Scattered light dampstaining and some foxing affecting margins of some plates in first volume. Some dampstaining in upper margins of preliminary leaves of first and second volumes. This copy contains the suppressed nude bathhouse plate opposite page 408 (first volume), which is not included in the list of illustrations and which is lacking from most copies. Overall just about very good. In 1852, Perry was appointed head of a naval expedition charged with inducing the Japanese government to establish diplomatic relations with the United States. In 1853 the Japanese were finally forced to accept a treaty demanding better treatment of shipwrecked seamen and which allowed American ships to dock at two Japanese ports to purchase fuel and supplies. "The most important result, however, was that the visit contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the modernization of Japan" - Hill. The lovely plates depict the country, Japanese natives, and their customs. "In this valuable scientific work the first successful attempt at producing a coloured lithograph, in imitation of drawing, is introduced" - Sabin. HILL 1332. SABIN 30958. REESE, STAMPED WITH A NATIONAL CHARACTER 74.

Jerusalem. Etude et reproduction photographique des monuments de la ville sainte depuis l'epoque judaique jusqu'a nos jours. Planches.

Paris, Gide & Baudry, 1856.. Folio (335 x 432 mm). 3 ff. of letterpress matter (half-title, title and list of plates). With 40 mounted calotypes. Contemp. marbled half morocco on five raised bands with gitstamped spine title; marbled endpapers.. Rare original edition: the plate volume of the reduced version of this magnificent work, containing 40 calotypes. Wishing to support L. F. J. Caignant de Saulcy in the controversy concerning the dating of the wall of Jerusalem that followed his journey to the Dead Sea, Auguste Salzmann set out for the Holy Land on 12 December 1853. With the help of his assistant Durheim, he prepared some two hundred waxed-paper negatives of the Jerusalem monuments during his four-month stay. While his findings were first published in a monumental volume in 1854 (the copy of the Duke de Luynes commanded 463,500 Euros at Sotheby's Paris in 2013), the present reduced edition, with prints by Blanquart-Evrard, is the better known. "It was an expensive book, a livraison, or fasicle of three prints costing 24 gold francs. A single print was 10 francs [...] Salzmann was acutely attentive to both patina and pattern in attempting to define the architectural strata of a city in which building was built upon building, thus leaving a vertical record of the various cultures that had occupied the city and left their remains on the foundations built by earlier conquerors [...] Salzmann himself described his pictures as having 'a conclusive brutality', but to modern eyes their poetic aspect seems paramount. It would appear that Salzmann was at one and the same time both expert and layman, dispassionate observer and enthusiast. His pictures have this dual quality, flickering rapidly between documentary and poetry. This, one might suggest, is the ideal goal for any photographer". - Binding slightly rubbed and chafed in places. Marginal foxing throughout, affecting only a few photographs; insigficant waterstain to edge; old ownerships erased from title, leaving slight traces. - Parr/Badger, The Photobook I, 25. Tobler 181f, Röhricht 440f. Baier, Geschichte der Fotografie 452f. Gernsheim, History of Photography 186. Witkin/London, Photograph Collector's Guide 86f.

Apotheose W. A. Mozart - Verherrlichungsblatt Mozarts, zeigt den Komponisten vor der an der Orgel spielenden Patronin der Musik, der "Heiligen Cäcilia".

. Stahlstich v. Eduard Schuler n. Joseph Führich, 1856, 37,5 x 29,3 (H) - Blattgr. 50,3 x 40,2 cm. - Sehr selten! Zum Künstler: Th.- B. XXX, S. 322.

Portrait of Sir Charles Augustus FitzRoy

London: Henry Graves, 1856. Mezzotint portrait, 510 x 795 mm., (plate size), some expert paper repairs, a little chipped at lower margin, framed. Large and impressive full-length portrait of Sir Charles Augustus FitzRoy, tenth Governor of New South Wales between 1846 and 1855. The aristocratic FitzRoy was also the half-brother of Robert FitzRoy, commander of the Beagle on which Charles Darwin served as naturalist.Charles Fitzroy was born in 1796 and received his first military commission at the age of sixteen. He fought at Waterloo and served in the colonial administration of the Cape Colony, South Africa, and elsewhere before his appointment as Governor of New South Wales in August of 1846. FitzRoy was renowned for his conciliatory temperament: he replaced the staunch and often unpopular Sir George Gipps who retired amidst massive public disagreement on land allocation to powerful squatters. FitzRoy appeased the squatters with the assistance of new Secretary of State, Earl Grey. He was later commended for maintaining law and justice during the massive upheavals in Australian society following the discovery of gold in 1851, and oversaw the end of convict transportation to Australia. He departed Australia in 1855, learning later in that year that his eldest son had lost his life in the Crimean War.This portrait is dated August 1856 and depicts Sir Charles FitzRoy in the full dress and regalia of a Colonial Governor, complete with the decorations earnt while an infantry officer earlier in his career.

Philadelphia; Stereotyped For The Author By L. Johnson & Co. [1856] - 5616. Original Cloth. 12mo. X, 134 pages. 19 cm. Third edition. Singerman 1437. Dedicated to Rebecca Gratz. Preface to Third edition: "The favourable reception which this manual met with on its first appearance induced me to issue, in 5605, a second edition, differing scarcely from the first; [ ] About eleven years have now elapsed since this book was reissued; and, as it has by degrees found its way into many schools, I now present it in a manner more permanent than before, --the title slightly changed, and with such verbal corrections here and there as a careful revision has pointed out to be needed. The second edition had indeed not been exhausted by the public demand; but, a calamitous conflagration having destroyed the remainder of the same, a new supply had to be provided, to answer any demand which may be made for it; and it is to be hoped that the Catechism in its new form may be the means of an extended usefulness for many years to come. And, in this connection, I cannot avoid stating that it is a gratifying phenomenon that, notwithstanding the indifference which many express towards religion, there is a deep-seated feeling that something ought and must be done to enlighten the youthful mind. Therefore, if any event in my life can afford me some degree of satisfaction, it is the consciousness of having added one contribution, by this unpretending work, to satisfy the demand for information in the ways of the law of God. [ ] With these few words the Catechism is again offered to the indulgent kindness of the American and British Israelites, in the full hope that it may be of service to those for whose edification it was composed. " Subjects: Jewish religious education. Jews - Education - United States. OCLC lists 6 copies. Lightly stained and lightly foxed. Wear to original boards. Good + condition.
