      Berlin: Oilprinting Storch & Kramer [for] B. May, [circa 1855], 1855. One of two pirated editions produced in Germany in the 1850s, both by Bernardo May. Sabin 17748; Palau 5421. Unobtrusive repairs to the corners and endpapers; cloth a little soiled; very good copy enclosed in a custom clamshell box.. Oblong folio, original blind-tamped grey-green cloth, gilt decorations and lettering on the upper board. Color-lithographed title and 27 plates after lithographs by Pierre Toussaint Frederic Mialhe. Two folding maps. First published in Havana in 1847-48 as Viaje Pintoresco al Rededor de la Isla de Cuba, Frederic Mialhe's work was pirated twice in the next decade by the Berlin publisher Bernardo May, who succeeded in defending himself against a breach of copyright suit by Mialhe and his Havana publisher Louis Marquier. Ironically May's pirated edition guaranteed the availability of Mialhe's well into the future for the original Havana edition is virtually unobtainable today. This copy has the captions in Spanish only, and in quality of the lithographs and their coloring is superior to the other pirated issue. With Cuban provenance: on the front free endpaper is the pencil inscription to "Miss Julia Mellon, Havana March 17th, 1861, from W. Tinquet [?]."

        [PASTEL PAINTING OF A SCENE IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, PROBABLY THE COLUMBIA RIVER, WITH INDIANS LANDING CANOES ON A RIVERBANK, AND SNOWCAPPED MOUNTAINS IN THE DISTANCE]

      Oregon or Washington, 1855. Pastel on card, 19 1/2 x 39 inches. Signed lower left: "Gibbs." Framed and glazed in a period hardwood frame and gold gilt liner. The painting, with lovely, bright colors, is in excellent displayable condition. This beautiful painting of three Indians laying up two canoes on the bank of a river in wooded mountainous terrain is the work of George Gibbs (1815-73), ethnographer, mapmaker, geologist, historian, attorney, and, for nearly twelve years, an explorer, artist, and administrator in the Pacific Northwest. The scene is likely the western entrance to the Columbia River Gorge, with the Cascade Mountain Range in the near distance. The painting shares several geographic and artistic touchpoints with the annotated on-the-spot drawing from 1850 that Gibbs made farther east on the river at Oak Point, illustrated in David Bushnell's DRAWINGS BY GEORGE GIBBS IN THE FAR NORTHWEST, 1849-1851. The painting is signed in a slightly stylized version of the signature found throughout Gibbs' personal and professional papers. Gibbs learned to paint while attending the Round Hill School in Northampton, Massachusetts, the first experimental prep school in the country, founded by future historian George Bancroft, and Joseph Green Cogswell, later director of the first great public library in the United States, the Astor Library. Gibbs grew up surrounded by great American art. "Gibbs' father commissioned Gilbert Stuart to paint Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe; these portraits hung in Gibbs' childhood home at Sunswick Farms, Astoria, New York. Stuart also painted portraits of 'Colonel' George Gibbs and Laura Wolcott Gibbs, his parents" - Stephen Dow Beckham. Papers from Gibbs' adolescence indicate the development of his interest in science and in outdoor life; and one very interesting letter, a harbinger of a career to come, written in 1833 from Boston to his sister, Eliza, includes an account of seventeen-year-old Gibbs' encounter with John James Audubon (Wisconsin Historical Society): "Dear Sister, I have just returned from a visit to Mr. Audubon. THE Audubon. But I will tell you all in order. Saturday I went to see the prints of his birds at the Athenaeum. They are superb, of full size on elephant paper. Turkeys & eagles as well as small birds and large as life & the colouring & execution beautiful. They are all of them represented in the act of seizing their prey or in some natural and striking position. The landscapes birds butterflies animals etc are very fine. His son paints the flowers & branches of trees on which many rest, from nature, they are very beautiful. He has not near finished his collection, though about two hundred are done.... "I killed [a moth] this morning with nitric acid, and by way of introduction agreed to take him to Mr. Audubon's & Aunt Ruth who had been before went to. Mr. A was unwell & we took the pleasure of seeing him. He is a complete original & a remarkable man. [Audubon was] extremely glad of the moth & Mr. A [illegible] that I would accept of a little shell he had picked up on the coast of Florida as a remembrance. [Audubon] has a large collection of stuffed birds as a reference for description. He showed me some of the original paintings. The feathers look like real ones every division accurately transferred...." Gibbs earned a Harvard law degree, then began a desultory, unenthusiastic, unprofitable law practice. "[In 1843, Gibbs became librarian of the New-York Historical Society], cataloging the collection and steering it toward an emphasis on American subjects. [Gibbs started another law firm], but his work for the historical society [which he genuinely enjoyed and committed himself to] absorbed more and more of his time. "The excitement over the discovery of gold in California finally dislodged Gibbs completely from his law practice, and in 1849 he left New York for St. Louis, Missouri. Joining a march of the Mounted Riflemen, he traveled overland from Fort Leavenworth to Oregon City. On the trip he made many drawings and kept a journal, portions of which were published in the New York papers. His lively entries described the climate and landscape, life in camp, and encounters with Sioux Indians and emigrants on the Oregon Trail. "Gibbs settled in Astoria, Oregon, near the mouth of the Columbia River. In 1850 he was appointed deputy collector of the port, but he resigned later that year in the aftermath of having embarrassed his superior by an overzealous prosecution of the customs laws. In 1851 he joined Reddick McKee on an expedition to draw up land treaties with Indian tribes west of the Sacramento Valley. In five months McKee's group met with nearly 10,000 Indians and concluded five treaties. Gibbs, who had already been interested in Indian languages, compiled vocabulary lists of fifteen indigenous tongues and worked on maps of the region. In 1852 he tried his hand at prospecting in northern California with less than impressive results. By the end of the year he was back in Astoria, again as a customs collector, but when Franklin Pierce took office in 1853, Gibbs lost his political appointment. "Gibbs soon found other work. In 1853 George B. McClellan hired him as a geologist and ethnologist to help survey a railroad route to the Pacific. In 1854 Gibbs left Oregon for good, settling near Fort Steilacoom in the Washington Territory on a farm he called 'Chetlah.' He was rarely there, however, continuing his surveying and conducting ethnological research. Working for the Indian Commission in the territory, Gibbs helped shape Indian policy. He argued for keeping Native Americans on their traditional homelands to preserve the cultural and linguistic diversity that he knew was dissolving quickly on reservations. He also campaigned for the use of Indian place names, which he often noted on the maps he made. Gibbs served briefly as the acting governor of Washington Territory and was appointed brigadier general of the militia in 1855. "In 1857 and 1858 Gibbs was again in the field, this time surveying the 49th parallel between the United States and Canada for the Northwest Boundary Survey. Working for Archibald Campbell, he traversed the border from the Pacific to the Rockies. Gibbs took every opportunity to add to his knowledge of Indian languages, and also collected animal, insect, and plant specimens, many of which he sent to scientists like Louis Agassiz and Asa Gray" - Bethany Neubauer, AMERICAN NATIONAL BIOGRAPHY. Raymond Settle's introduction to THE MARCH OF THE MOUNTED RIFLEMAN, which draws from the journals made by Gibbs and that expedition's leader, Major Osborne Cross, endorses the importance of Gibbs western sketches: "As an artist Gibbs exhibited considerable talent, both in sketching outdoor scenes and in drawing from life. He made what was perhaps the first drawing of Shoshone Falls, and sketched various scenes in eastern Oregon, on the Columbia River, and while crossing the Cascade Mountains...[In 1851, while associated with Oregon Territory Governor John P. Gaines in the making of treaties with the Calapooya Indians, and later that same year with Reddick McKee], Gibbs made many drawings...numerous drawings." Bushnell notes that Gibbs' sketches of the Pacific Northwest impressed Seth Eastman, who incorporated them into his own work. Eastman's sepia drawing, "Humboldt, California, 1851," later made into an engraving for Schoolcraft, is annotated: "S. Eastman from a sketch by G. Gibbs" (SETH EASTMAN - A PORTFOLIO OF NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS, pl. 47). George Gibbs authored, usually under the imprimatur of the Smithsonian Institution, several important books on Indian languages and dialects, and tribal life, in the Pacific Northwest. His scholarship in such works as NOTES ON THE TINNEH OR CHEPEWYAN INDIANS OF BRITISH AND RUSSIAN AMERICA (1867) and ALPHABETICAL VOCABULARIES OF THE CLALLAM AND THE LUMMI (1863) was so meticulously researched and well-illustrated that historian William Goetzmann calls Gibbs "one of the founders of scientific studies in the Far West." Gibbs' notes and interpretations of 19th-century treaties between Indian tribes and federal and state governments (the drafts for those treaties are often in his handwriting) are used to this day to argue lawsuits involving American Indian interests, many concerning the building of casinos on reservation lands Gibbs wrote books concerning American law. His propagandist history of the Federalist Party, MEMOIRS OF THE ADMINISTRATIONS OF WASHINGTON AND JOHN ADAMS (1846) began as a biographical study of his great-grandfather, Declaration of Independence signer Oliver Wolcott, the senior, and his grandfather, Oliver Wolcott, United States Treasury Secretary and Connecticut governor. Terrible health, rheumatic gout, kept Gibbs out of the U.S. Army during the Civil War, though he did volunteer. "He became an important member of the Loyal National League and the Loyal Union Club. During the latter part of his life he lived in Washington, D.C. ['in the Smithsonian tower!' (Beckham)], where his extensive knowledge of the northwestern Indians [and his collection of their artifacts] was often employed by the Smithsonian Institution" - DAB. Artwork by George Gibbs is rarely found in the marketplace. Artnet and AskArt do not report any works having come into the market. He donated the majority of his western sketches to the Smithsonian Institution. The Peabody Museum at Harvard University owns a small holding of his sketches, as does the National Park Service collection at Fort Vancouver. Aside from the present example, we are not familiar with any other large scale painting by Gibbs - nor is the leading authority on Gibbs, Lewis and Clark College professor Stephen Dow Beckham, who has written about Gibbs since his 1970 dissertation, "George Gibbs, 1815-1873: Historian and Ethnologist" - making this newly discovered, quite gorgeous, picture a significant addition to the art canon of the American Northwest. This series of exploration reports on a possible north-central route for a railroad line linking the eastern United States with the Pacific coast contains the most extensive contemporary information available on the American West, and is a major resource for scholars and collectors of Western Americana. In 1853, Congress authorized the Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis, to send expeditions west to determine the best route for a transcontinental railroad. There were four possibilities to survey and consider: one running along the Missouri River and over the northern Rocky Mountains; another across the central Plains to the Great Salt Lake and then on the coast along the 38th parallel; a more southern route along the 35th parallel, through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Soutern California; and finally a 32nd parallel route through central Texas, along the Gila River, terminating in San Diego. Parties led by Brevet Major Isaac Stevens and Captain George McClellan, explored these choices, sending updates back to Congress. This set contains their reports, correspondence, itineraries, and journals, as well as data collected on flora, fauna, geology, climate, and the Indian tribes encountered. The set is also notable for its cartography: Wheat devotes 24 pages of "Mapping the Trans-Mississippi West" to its maps. The reports are extensively illustrated, both in the text and with attractive lithographed plates, many of them colored, picturing Western scenery and geological formations, plants, and animals--the latter including a number of very pleasing color plates of birds. One volume is largely devoted to describing the Indian tribes encountered, with plates depicting scenes from villages, hunts, and celebrations, as well as Native tools and costume. This set stands as a testament to one of the greatest government-sponsored programs in American history, and continues to benefit researchers and historians to the present day.. 300 x 220 mm.       Sawyer & Graves,, Quincy, IL: 1855 - Folio broadside, 16.5" x 22". Printed using several different typesettings. Light crease from having been folded. Very Good. This rare broadside survival was printed during the early commercial development of Quincy, a Mississippi River town which became a thriving rail and river transportation center and, by 1870, the second largest city in Illinois. The Graves brothers-- Henry Littleton [1832- c.1882] and Washington Clay [1834-?]-- were Kentuckians who became Illinois farmers before they were out of their teens. They became partners with James T. Sawyer [c.1818-?], a native Tennessean with a well-stocked mercantile business. Their establishment is noted in the directories of the era. Sawyer later served as a director of the Quincy, Missouri Pacific Railroad. Afin d'éviter les commérages qui déclencheraient la jalousie de Mme Ha?ska, Balzacl lui demanda de se travestir en jeune homme et de se faire passer pour son page qu'il appela Marcel, nom du domestique de Raoul de Nangis dans l?opéra de Meyerbeer, Les Huguenots. Balzac lui dédia La Grenadière : « A Caroline, à la poésie du voyage, le voyageur reconnaissant » et s?inspira de sa vie et de sa personnalité pour le personnage de Dinah dans le roman La Muse du département (1843). Claire Brunne eut une longue liaison avec l'écrivain. En 1844, elle publia Une Fausse Position, roman à clef où Balzac est mis en scène de façon assez désagréable sous le nom d'Ulric (Maison de Balzac, Fonds Caroline Marbouty). Alexandre Despierres formé par Simier, participa à l'Exposition universelle de 1855 (année de la parution de l'ouvrage) où une collection très variée de ses reliures fut présentée : « La grâce, l'originalité, la légèreté, l'élégance, l'harmonie, la richesse d'ornementation et de composition qui abondent dans chacun de ses échantillons provoquent l'étonnement et les éloges de chaque groupe.       Hanover, 1855. 8vo. 32 page German manuscript, a poetic or theatrical composition dealing with California and dedicated to Queen Marie, Consort of King George V of Hanover, during the California Gold Rush. Dedication page, written in French, signed and dated by 'Gontard' who was an affluent art collector and chairman of an elite German art museum, and whom had evidently just met the Queen in person at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Exquisite red morocco binding by Hof-buchbinders Wilhelm Ermold (binder to the Royal Hanover Court), beautifully finished in gilt with a crowned monogram 'M' for Marie, royal blue cloth endpapers, satin bow dividers. Evidence of an imbedded gift-wrapping ribbon to boards, slight foxing to first few leafs, otherwise very good condition, internally clean and bright, a pleasing work in an elegant binding fit for royalty. Title: Die Reise nach Californien. Nach dem französischen bearbeitet von Eduard Suhren. [A Voyage to California. From the French, edited by Edward Suhren.] The ambiguously titled manuscript may be a German rendition of the French theatrical opera by Dondey Dupré titled "Le voyage en Californie ou notice explicative du panorama" which concerned travels across the United States and explorations in the West - by John Charles Fremont, first explorer to cross the Sierra Nevada in winter, foremost US Senator, abolitionist, who prospered during the California Gold Rush. Content includes the explorer's sighting of pines in the Sierra Nevada oak forest at 3500 feet, melting gold, and so forth. Frémont's father was a native of France, who died only eight years after the French Revolution. As such, his gallant endeavours and accomplishments in the New World would certainly garner much attention in France, as with other European nations with colonies abroad. The French opera was first publicly performed 8 August 1850 in Paris, at the Théâtre des Variétés. Gontard, who met the queen, and dedicates this manuscript to her, may have been involved in a German production, performed for the House of Hanover. A full page dedication inscription, in French, is addressed to the Queen of Hanover, by Huguenot descendant Jakob Friedrich Moritz Gontard (1826-1886), chairman and administrator of the Städel art museum in Frankfurt, officially the Städelsches Kunstinstitut und Städtische Galerie. Queen consort of Hanover from 1851 to 1878, née Princess Marie of Saxe-Altenburg, recipient of this dedicated manuscript, was the wife of King George V of Hanover, the last monarch of the short-lived Kingdom of Hanover. In his dedication, dated Hanover, 12 July 1855, Gontard thanks the monarch for having come to see his panorama at the International Exhibition held on the Champs-Elysées, stating that her visit inspired the work which forms the volume, and which he humbly offers to her. He references materials which were given to her onsite, which would elucidate the obscure details of the creative piece. The date indicates that King George V and Queen Marie of the short-lived Kingdom of Hanover attended the event in its first eight weeks. Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom paid a visit to the Parisian Exhibition in August. Unique manuscript volume, bound in the Royal Court of Hanover, written at the height of the California Gold Rush and featuring historic Americana content. . Signed. Manuscript.

A loyal Southern Democrat, Turner tells Foster "that your doctrines involve a war upon the principles of the Declaration of Independence, of the State and Federal Constitutions, of a republican form of government, and therefore of civil and religious liberty." The Know-Nothings oppose "religious toleration," which is "the corner stone of our political edifice. You can't destroy that without pulling down the whole superstructure." He defends the loyalty of American Catholics and denounces the Know-Nothings for attempting to limit their participation in American civic life. Turner says, "The Democratic party has administered this government for nearly half a century. Under this administration a great Empire has sprung up, almost as if by magic." He charges Foster's Party with "pandering to the abolition influence at the North" and for favoring Congressional power to restrict slavery in the Western Territories. Not in De Renne. A beautiful copy in a handsome contemporary binding: the first full edition of the great sixteenth-century work on Spanish voyages, and 'the source from which most literary writers have drawn their accounts of the early occurrences in the New World' (Church). Oviedo's 'massive work? if published when it was written, might have given its author the literary stature of Barros? As Oviedo's work stands, it is a noble monument; in fact, it is the greatest classic of the early years of Spanish activity in the New World to be chronicled by a contemporary?' (Penrose). This canonical edition includes much of Oviedo's manuscript for the first time, and includes the first full-length printing of the various sections originally partially published in Spain in 1526, 1535, and 1547. It is a superb achievement: as Palau notes it is 'magnifica en todos conceptos, tanto por el merito historico y literario como por la presentacion nitida y correcta.''The Spanish historian Oviedo was born at Madrid in August 1478. Educated at the court of Ferdinand and Isabella, in his thirteenth year he became page to their son, the Infante Don John, was present at the siege of Granada, and there saw Columbus before his voyage to America. On the death of Prince John (4 October 1497), Oviedo went to Italy, and there acted as secretary to Gonzolo Fernandez de Cordoba. In 1514 he was appointed supervisor of gold-smeltings at San Domingo, and on his return to Spain in 1523 was appointed historiographer of the Indies. He paid five more visits to America before his death, which took place at Valladolid in 1557.'Besides a romance of chivalry entitled Claribalte (1519) Oviedo wrote two extensive works of permanent value: La General y natural historia de las Indias and Las Quinquagenas de la nobleza de Espana. The former work was first issued at Toledo (1526) in the form of a summary entitled La Natural hystoria de las Indias; the first part of La Historia general de las Indias appeared at Seville in 1535; but the complete work was not published till 1851-1855, when it was edited by J.A. de los Rios for the Spanish Academy of History. Though written in a diffuse style, it embodies a mass of curious information collected at first hand, and the incomplete Seville edition was widely read in the English and French versions published by Eden and Poleur respectively in 1555 and 1556?' Housed in a new quarter cloth and pastepaper clamshell box. Stéphane Geoffray (1827-1895) banker, lawyer and photographer, was the inventor of the waxed paper process with cerolein. This was an improvement upon Gustave Le Gray's waxed paper process and produced sharper, and faster results. This and a similar collodion process for glass were described in a paper published in 1855.This manual covers the sensitizing and processing of photographic papers, with details about gelatin coatings, making this among the earliest reference to suggest a viable commercial manufacturing of photographic papers. Contemporary half calf, gold-tooled spine with title ''Na lau Hawaii', kept in modern brown cloth dropback box.

      - Blunt, The art of botanical illustration, pp. 138-142; cf. Cave, Impressions of nature, pp. 60-64, 137-145. Important and unique Hawaiian nature-print album showing numerous life-size plant specimens from Hawaii and other Pacific Islands. The contemporary title on the spine of the volume, "Na lau Hawaii", roughly translates 'The leaves of Hawaii'. The collection was most likely created by an American sailor, involved in whaling or the China trade. Most samples are identified in pencil. Among the plants featured in the album are the taro plant, the huge leaf of the palapalai fern, several varieties of fruit plants, including banana, breadfruit, pear, guava, pineapple, lime and papaya, and plants such as arrow root, bamboo, wild raspberry, mulberry, Indian rubber plant, tamarind, and various ferns as well. Five of the later pages are headed "Aitutaki", the name of one of the Cook Islands south of Hawaii. These are followed by two pages headed "Leaves from Akaroa, N.Z.", indicating that they are specimens from the eastern coast of New Zealand's South Island.The album is undated, but "Parsons Co. Booksellers & Binders of 107 Union Street, New Bedford" (Massachusetts) operated at that address about 1855 to 1860.Re-backed preserving the original backstrip; some folds and small tears; slightly foxed. Contemporary uniform polished half calf over marbled boards. Spines with five raised, gilt and black-lined bands, red and black morocco labels with gilt title, number and year (volumes 1-9), and gilt ornaments and title (volumes 10-12). Marbled endpapers. Speckled edges.l A rare, fine set of the start of the most important, and longest running German geographical journal, in particular dealing with uncharted parts of African, the Far-East, and artctic regions, by explorers such as Barth, Livingstone, Vogel, Kane, Prinz Waldemar von Preussen, Petermann, Philippi, A. von Humboldt, Roth, Perther, Von Heuglin, Rohlfs, etc. Especially important because of the many original, often very detailed maps of hitherto unknown or poorly known regions of the world. Subjects are geographical, topographical, and/or geological. The series was founded by the cartographer August Heinrich Petermann (1822-1878), and bear his name ever since. "Petermann was responsible for drawing most of the maps in the first few years of the journal. His strength was in the analysis and evaluation of all sources available. As such one can say that the indication "Originalkarte" (original map) in many titles was well earned, for few slavishly copied what explorers or other experts had sketched" (Wikipedia). Peterman uniformized the maps by always using the metric system, and the Greenwich meridian as prime reference. Next to geographical maps these volumes include several views, profiles and even some anthropological illustrations. In the rear of volume 9 there are two "Ergänzungshefte": publications outside the series, but sometimes included. The last three volumes have a different, also contemporary, binding. Some scattered spotting in a few sections, minimal shelfwear, mainly to board edges. in all a very good set. Very rare, especially in this state.

Contemporary uniform half morocco over marbled boards. Spines with five raised bands, gilt title. Marbled endpapers, speckled edges.l The works of Buffon, Cuvier, and De Lacépède went through many editions. This 4to edition offers the complete work of all three authors, has excellent images, follows the Linnaean system, and is in all these respects superior to the 18th century editions. This edition, edited by Flourens and published by Garnier, is not in Nissen; in fact, of the "Cuvier" part there is nothing similar in Nissen at all. The "Buffon" section, including the parts on mammalogy and ornithology, was published in 12 volumes; the "Cuvier et Lacépède" section, with herpetology and ichthyology, and additional mammal and bird plates, was published in four matching volumes. The fine, hand-coloured plates are by, e.g. Traviés, and Acarie Baron. According to Nissen (ZBI 705), the Buffon-part of a similar, but not identical work does not have 150 plates (per the title page, as in this edition), but 163. However, his collation differs widely from this set and doubtlessly refers to a different edition (and so does his number 704). In this set the Buffon part has several plates bound in at variance with the "indication pour le placement des planches", and does not have a plate of fossil teeth, and two bird plates ("Le petit mouche et son nid", and "L'echasse Le tourne-pierre, l'huitrier"), all called for in the index but never bound in, and indeed has 147 plates, including the maps, tinted frontispiece, and portrait; the index to the "Cuvier" part calls for a "baleine" plate in volume 1, but it is not included. Original red and black printed front wrapper of volume 11 bound in. Two leaves with a small repair to the top edge, some very light spotting, mainly to tissue-guards and near the top edge, but generally quite clean and in all a very attractive, uniform set. Nissen ZBI, 704-705 (not this edition).

Charles Reade (1814-1884) was born in London. He was an English author whose novels expose, with passionate indignation, the social injustices of his times. His greatest work, however, The Cloister and the Hearth (1861), a brilliant historical romance, relates the adventures of the father of Erasmus.As a young man Reade was an active partner in a Soho violin business and was himself a fair performer on that instrument. In 1843 he was called to the bar but never practiced law. In 1851 Reade became vice president of Magdalen College, Oxford, but treated the position as a sinecure. A loyal friend of Reade's, Laura Seymour, an actress, became his housekeeper from 1856 until her death in 1879. Reade's 14 novels reveal his humanitarianism and concern with social issues. Mr. Kean is Charles J. kean (1811-1858) noted English thespian who had acted in Reade's adaptation of the "Courier of Lyons" during the previous year. Taylor is Tom Taylor (1817-1880) editor of "Punch", playwright and sometimes dramatic collaborator with Reade.From the letter: "By all means try your hand at the difficult passage and then we will sit in judgement on you instead of being sat upon. Of course I will read "the First Presenter" on Thrusday if you wish it. But if you would ont his particular occasion be good enough to represent the Authors I for one should feel obliged as the reading would interrupt work of imporantce in which I am hard pressed for time.I am glad the piece as amended begins to look satisfactory.It owes much toyour care and vigilance. Sie hatte aber nur eine kurze "Lebenzeit", denn sie ging in einem Taifun vor Yokohama am 2.9.1860 im Rahmen der preußischen Ostasienexpedition (1859-1862) unter. Zweck der Reise: Nach der gewaltsamen Öffnung der japanischen Häfen durch den nordamerikanischen Kommandanten Perry wollte auch Preussen mit Japan Handel treiben. - Vorliegende Darstellung (umgeben von einer breiten Bordüre) zeigt die "S.M.S. Frauenlob" vor der Insel Rügen.

        New Map of the State of Texas Compiled from J. De Cordova's large Map.

      New York.: J. H. Colton & Co.. Copyright 1855. [ 1856].. Hand-colored map on sheet size 18 1/2 x 29 inches with central vertical fold. Light toning to margins, overall very good condition. Accompanying the map is a full page text 18 1/2 x 31 inches titled "The State of Texas." There are three inset maps: "Plan of the Northern Part of Texas"; "Plan of Galveston Bay"; "Plan of Sabine Lake." An uncommon edition of this impressive map of Texas. The map is dated along bottom edge below Sabine Lake inset; the last two numerals are not fully formed but appear to establish an 1855 date; this issue was published in Colton's Atlas of the World in 1857. The map is distinguished from later editions by two text blocks, one straddling the fold at the bottom of map titled "Explanations," with images and varying fonts identifying "Railroads," "Common Roads," "Cities," "County Towns," etc. The other appears at the top of the map to the eastern boundary of New Mexico. It reads: "Note: From the head waters of the Red Brazos and Colorado Rivers to the Rio Pecos is a desolate and sterile plain from 100 to 200 miles in width, elevated about 4500 feet above the Gulf of Mexico, without water or timber and with a scanty vegetation." The land speculator Jacob De Cordova was hired by the Texas General Land Office to compile a map for promotional purposes; it was first published in 1849, with subsequent editions revised to show new counties, public lands, settlements, etc. De Cordova's map was the basis for this early Colton map. .

Roberts (1796-1864), "gehört zu den geschätztesten Architekturmalern der neueren Zeit" (Thieme/B. 28, 428); vorliegende Ansichten aus dem Nahen Osten, Arbeitsergebnisse einer Reise in den Jahren 1838 und 1839, erschienen zuerst ab 1842 in Imperial-Folio und mit Handkolorierung der damals 118 Tafel und 120 Textillustrationen als 41 Lieferungen im Zeitraum von 7 Jahren. Roberts war einer der ersten Künstler, der nicht nach Hörensagen, Skizzen und Berichten anderer Illustrationen fertigte, sondern nach eigener Anschauung arbeitete. Als früherer Theatermaler war er sich der Wirkung von Inszenierungen bewußt, die er hier, in seiner zweiten Schaffensphase angelangt, und zuerst als Aquarell mit sicherem, feinem Strich aufs Papier brachte. Das Werk insgesamt ist sowohl ein Höhepunkt der lithographischen Buchillustration wie der ästhetischen Aneignung des (antiken) Orients durch Europa; es liegt hier in der zweiten Ausgabe vor. Der Text stammt von George Croly (1780-1860), einem irisch-englischen Schriftsteller (Drama, Lyrik, Roman) und Historiker, seinerzeit bekannt, einflußreich und als Geistlicher seit 1835 Rektor von St. Stephen Walbrook in London. Auch bei ihm ist das Wissen um die theatralische Wirkung von Inszenierungen vorauszusetzen, wobei es faktisch unterfüttert ist von historischen Kenntnissen. Etwas berieben und bestoßen; papierbedingt gebräunt; teils stockfleckig; Besitzvermerk auf Vorsätzen; auf hinterem Spiegel mit Buchbindermarke: "Bound by Leighton Son and Hodge". Bd 1: oberes Kapital mit Einriss und knittrig; Innengelenke angeplatzt; Titelporträt auf Vorsatz montiert; Titel und ein Textblatt am Rand mit Klebefilm unschön verstärkt (verfärbt).
