Bradbury & Evans. London. 1855 - 1856. - Nature-printed color plate, sheet 21 3/4 x 14 1/2 inches. Light foxng to edges, faint scattered foxing; very good, bright condition. This beautiful folio-sized antique botanical print is Plate XIII from "The Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland ., Nature-Printed by Henry Bradbury" published in 1855-1856 "one of the finest pieces of nature-printing ever achieved. The plates were produced 'by passing the plant, under pressure, between a plate of soft lead from which an electrotype could be made' (Blunt). As a result the plates record the smallest details of flowers and the finest venations of leaves. Bradbury, whose father was of the publishing house Bradbury & Evans, studied at the Imperial Printing Office in Vienna." (de Belder catalogue #237). The mania for ferns (or "pteridomania") was one of several plant fixations of the Victorians, fueled by discoveries from abroad and a rapidly expanding middle class interested in plants and gardening; ferns were ideal indoor plants for the Victorian home and their graceful forms were much used in decorative art.

Assault of Sevastopol. Two Topographical & Panoramic Sketches, representing the Advanced Lines of Attack, and the Russian Defences, in Front of Sevastopol. With a Description and Remarks. [Together with;] Topographical Sketches of the Ground before Sevastopol, accompanied by an Explanatory Description. Part II. Shewing the Mamelon, the Malakhoff Tower, and the Redan; with the Connecting Works. [and;] Part III. Sketch V. - Shewing the White Batteries, the Mamelon, and the Quarries with all the Ground gained on the Night of the 7th June.

London: Chapman and Hall; Woolwich: Printed at the Royal Artillery Institution; London: Edward Stanford, [1855] - Folio Original brown ripple-grained cloth, title gilt to the upper board, rebacked. A little rubbed, rebacked in brown cloth as noted, light marginal staining to fore-edge of some leaves, otherwise very good. 5 folding lithographic panoramas, one extending to almost 1m in length. First edition. Uncommon and attractive visual memoir of the famous siege operations at Sebastopol in the Crimea. Only 4 complete sets on COPAC, with OCLC adding just 3 more. Biddulph was commissioned as second lieutenant in the Royal Artillery in 1843, and served at various stations including Bermuda, promoted second captain in 1850. On the outbreak of the Crimean War he was sent to Turkey, he "accompanied the army from Varna to the Crimea in September, and took part in the battles of the Alma, Balaklava, Inkerman, and the Chernaya. During the siege of Sevastopol he served as assistant engineer in the trenches outside the city, helped repulse a Russian sortie on 26 October 1854, and assisted in the three bombardments of the fortress Biddulph was later attached to the quartermaster-general's staff during the remainder of the conflict, and was appointed director of submarine telegraph cables in the Black Sea For his services during the war Biddulph was mentioned in dispatches, given a brevet majority and a brevet lieutenant-colonelcy, was made a member of the Légion d'honneur, and received the Turkish Mejidiye (fifth class)." (ODNB) The three parts each issued by a different publisher, the two sketches in the first, lithographed by Day & Son, show signs of having been "worked up" from Biddulph's drawings to a greater extent than those, printed by Hullmandel & Walton, in the subsequent parts which are far less finished. Apparently the Committee of the Royal Artillery Institution made arrangements that "one copy of the work may be furnished gratis to every member at home and abroad." Either lack of enthusiasm on the part of members, fragility of the format, or a combination of both has ensured that this is a rare piece. [Attributes: First Edition]

        La Crinolinomanie

Maison Martinet, Paris, 1855. Hardcover. Very Good. (Veuillez m’écrire par e mail pour voir l’information en français) Vernier’s satirical collection of lithographs gives us a humorous insight into the impracticalities of the mid-nineteenth century fashion for enormous, reinforced skirts, the “jupon-cage” or “crinoline”, supposedly devised and certainly popularised by the Empress Eugénie. The illustrations are caricatures, not just of this “mode de femme”, but of the pretentiousness of the bourgeoisie of the period. This is a very rare collection and it appears there are complete books held only in a handful of museums and art galleries worldwide, and individual lithographs only exist in few catalogued art collections There are 14 pages of hand coloured lithographs. The internal plates are by Destouches. The book measures 34cm x 26.5cm, with pale green boards with black titling and sketch of “La Crinoline a du bon!”, lithograph by Charles Fernique. The board covers (back and front) are detached and are rubbed and marked. There is only part of the spine present. The front and rear end-papers are foxed and the rear end-paper is creased and has a small amount of pencil writing along the top edge. The actual pictures have some foxing to the page edges and to the description printed under each picture but on the whole the prints themselves are very clean, bright and unmarked. The page numbers are not consecutive but the book has 14 bound pages (there is no text other than under each picture) and this agrees with the publisher's information I can find, so the book appears to be complete. The majority of the plates show Vernier’s signature. Charles Vernier was born in Paris on 23 April 1813 and died in Versailles on 2 August 1892 was an French artist, cartoonist and lithographer. He worked for Le Charlivari and illustrated and published several collections, most famously his various caricatures of contemporary society. An excellent collection in surprising good condition.         Autograph letter

Texas, 1855. unbound. Exceedingly rare A. L. signed twice with initials "J.S.B." 4 pages, 4to., Fort McIntosh, Texas, August 6, 1855, a lengthy personal letter to his younger sister, Abbie. In small part: "...I was ordered right out into camp and have been scouting...since...I am still here on a Court Martial and should not wonder if an order came up by the next mail to create the Court to 18 members and try a man for Murder and 3 for mutiny...The men I alluded to above belong to Capt. Rhetts Company. One of them shot down the orderly Sgt. with his revolver, putting one ball through his head and then stood deliberately over him and fired two through his body...We have a real tedious case before us a Dutchman with an interpreter...I grow more and more tired of foreign gibberish..." Signature has been clipped out of final page, with minor text loss as a result, yet two initialed signatures remain. Very good. Bowen was a Confederate major general attached to Breckinridge's division at Shiloh, where he was wounded. He also participated the the Vicksburg campaign until his death. Bowen in rare in any form.

An interesting hybrid, being Volume III, section 3 of the quarto series of the Pacific Railroad Survey reports, with fifteen added plates from Emory's boundary survey report and Ives' Colorado report, all of southwestern Indians. The attractive lithographic plates, many of them handsomely colored, are after drawings by Möllhausen and Schott.
