WHALING: [Secretarial Copy of an Autographed Letter Signed by David Glasgow Farragut Concerning a Seized Whaler, Copied by his Clerk and Signed by him: "D.E. Farragut, Comd'g."].

1855 - La Paz, Mexico, 20 November 1855. Small Folio (ca. 29 x 20 cm). One page. Brown ink on light blue wove paper. With fold marks and remnants of mounts on recto and verso, but overall a very good letter in a legible hand. The original letter had been written by United States consular agent Thomas Sprague, addressed to "the commanding officer of any American Man of War." Sprague complained that "General Blancarte has seized the American whale-ship Rebecca Adams, removed the officers and crew on shore, and put them in prison, without any lawful cause. I have demanded their release, but as yet have not been able to procure it. There are also several females among these sufferers. The presence of an armed vessel is required instantly at this Port." The Rebecca Adams had left San Francisco in April 1855, and Starbuck makes no note of this incident or the vessel's eventual return to port (page 532). Farragut's clerk copied out the present copy at the Mare Island Navy Yard in California April 1st 1856, where it was signed by Farragut and forwarded to another officer for response.

the Tour of Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque: A Poem

sp; - London - Nattali and Bond9.5 by 6; (iii)276pp., 1855. sp; - London - Nattali and Bond9.5 by 6; (iii)276pp., 1855 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A rare early edition of this famous comic poem, illustrated with plentiful colour plates. William Coombe was a writer of much miscellany, celebrated for his 'inexhaustible stock of anecdote. ' A schoolmate of the notorious William Beckford and 'wicked' Lord Lyttleton, he is famousfor a series of witty, rapscallion letters to newspapers purporting to have been penned by the latter. 'Dr. Syntax' isa charicature concocted by Coombe and engraver Donald Rowlandson; a rural minister and schoolmaster, and an unknowingly hapless blend of 'Don Quixote and Parson Adams. ' Tipped into ridiculous and socially-awkwardsituatuations by his creators, Dr. Syntax gained immediate popularity, and remains entertaining to this day. This edition appears to be a rebinding of the first volume ofNattali and Bond's 1857 three-volume edition of the 'Dr. Syntax' poems; though it stands quite handsomely on its own!Illustrated with comedic charicatures in the form of29 colour plates and 2 monochrome frontispiece platesOne of three volumes. Condition: Externally, rebound in half-calf using old label. Sound with some wear. Nice marbled boards. Wear to all extremities and some rubbing to boards. Internally, very firmly bound. Hinges strained. Some spotting throughout. Ink inscription to frontpaper 'J. A. B. 1857 - 978. ' Letter written on blank preliminary in ink. Overall: GOOD..

Six Original Watercolour Views of Bombay Harbour and the Konkan Coast].

1855 - [1855]. Six watercolours on watermarked laid paper. Four watercolours ca. 11 to 14 x36,5 cm (4 ½ to 5 ½ x 14 ¼ in), one watercolour ca. 17,5x 25 cm (6 ¾ x 10 in), and a large sepia watercolour ca. 25,5x36 cm (10 x 14 ¼ in). One watercolour captioned in ink, one captioned and dated in pencil; one - with additional watercolour sketch on verso. Recently matted. A very good collection. Six atmospheric watercolours of Bombay harbour and the surrounding Konkan coast, drawn by an officer of the Indian Navy George N.P. Mason. He served in the Bombay Presidency for over twenty years, starting as a midshipman in 1842 and retiring at the rank of Commander in the early 1860s. The "East India Register and Army List for 1854" reported of Mason as a midshipman on a steam packet vessel Feerooz (8 guns, launched in Bombay in 1846); and in 1858 he was already listed as a Lieutenant-Commander of a schooner Georgiana (launched 1855), tender to sloop Clive, Persian Gulf (Colburn's United Service Magazine for 1858, p. 802). The watercolours apparently created during Mason's service as a midshipman on Feerooz include four panoramic views and a large black sepia watercolour of Bombay harbour and the coast, with native sail boats at sea and distant mountainous shoreline in the background. There is also a colourful view of the Funnel Hill (Karnala Fort) - a 13th-century Indian coastal fortification, in possession of the British East India Company since 1818. Dated 23 April 1855, the watercolour was drawn at "3 p.m., after a very rainy morning". "For rounding the Prong and entering the harbour, a good mark in clean weather is the Funnel Hill, remarkable by a rock on it resembling a chimney, and is situated behind Caranja Island, about 18 miles eastward from Bombay Castle" (Bombay Harbour and the circumjacent land, with sailing directions// India Directory, or Directions for sailing to and from the East Indies. Vol. 1. London, 1826, p. 342).

        The Life of Napoleon Bonaparte

Edinburgh - Adam and Charles Black, 1855. Edinburgh - Adam and Charles Black, 1855 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce edition of Sir Walter Scott's biography of Napoleon. With illustrated half-title. Written near the end of Scott's life, this was first published in 1827. Scott presents a dispassionate, unpartisan view of Napoleon, paying tribute to his military genius and administrative skill and underlining his legacy to France in the form of a national system of education, greatly improved communications, and the Code Napolon. Refusing to paint him as the bloodthirsty despot presented by many a fellow Tory, Scott notes his mild and humane temperament and genuine love of his country. The seeds of his downfall lie in his progressive self-identification with the French people and in his vision of himself as the man on whom the nation's destiny rested. His life ultimately becomes a tale of hubris, where overweaning ambition and self-blinding egotism lead to defeat in the Russian snows. (WS)Condition: Ina full morocco binding with gilt detailing. Externallygenerally smart, though with a few marks and some light rubbing. Corners are slightly bumped. Internally firmly bound. Ink inscription to recto of front free-endpaper dated 1856.         SAKOONTALA; OR THE LOST RING. AN INDIAN DRAMA Translated . From the Sanskrit of Kalidasa

Hertford: Stephen Austin, 1855. Hertford: Stephen Austin, 1855. A fine exhibition binding by Zaehnsdorf (with their exhibition stamp to the rear endpaper) with excellent provenance - see below; pp. xxviii, 227, [1], 24, [2]. Highly decorated with colour and gilt printing throughout, 16 colour-printed plates. Crushed brown morocco, with the boards tooled in gilt with an Indian influence, four large corner pieces with a central oval boss, the spine decorated in gilt and with five wide raised bands; double fillet edge-rolls; wide turn-in extravagently decorated in a repeating floral pattern; orange silk doublures with "Bound by Zaensdorf"stamped to the front. All edges gilt. Binding very good with slight rubbing to extremities; contents good and tight, some pages with a little foxing but mostly light, a few pages more pronounced. A fine book in a fine binding. PROVENANCE: With the bookplate of Cynthia Graham (née Duncombe) with the signature of the same dated Christmas 1889 to the front blank. Cynthia Duncombe was one of the daughters of the 1st Earl of Feversham and wife to Sir Richard James Graham, 4th Bt. She was sister to Helen Venetia [Duncombe] Vincent better known as Helen Viscountess D'Aberon, who was described as the most beautiful woman in England - as captured in John Singer Sargent's famous portrait. The Duncombe sisters inhabited a world of grace and elegance and, above all, wealth, and were able to enjoy the finest "trinkets" that the then world could offer. This book was evidently a Christmas present. BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: "The pictorial borders to the illustrations, as well as that round each page, and the other ornaments and decorations, are taken from MSS in the British Museum and the Library of the East India House. They have been designed by Mr T Sulman Jun, and engraved by Mr George Measom." Stephen Austin of Hertford was printer to the East India College, established by the East India Company in 1805 outside Hertford. He began to print and publish oriental books using wood-engraving rather than chromolithography for his lavish decorations, sometimes with four or five colours. This is his most successful work.. First Edition. Full Leather. Very Good. Small 4to.

Introduction to the Literature of Europe in the Fifteenth, Sixteenth, and Seventeenth Centuries

London - John Murray, 1855. London - John Murray, 1855 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A uniformly bound set of Henry Hallam's survey of European literature. Hallam (9 July 1777 21 January 1859) was an English historian and the father ofthe prematurely deceased Arthur Henry Hallam, about whom Tennyson's 'In Memoriam' was written. In the first chapter of the 'Introduction' Hallam sketches the state of literature in Europe down to the end of the 14th century: the extinction of ancient learning which followed the fall of the Roman empire and the rise of Christianity; the preservation of the Latin language in the services of the church; and the revival of letters after the 7th century. For the first century and a half of his period he is mainly occupied with a review of classical learning, taking short decennial periods and noticing works which they produced. For the period 15201550 there are separate chapters on ancient literature, theology, science, speculative philosophy and jurisprudence, the literature of taste and other miscellaneous literature; and the subdivisions of subjects is carried further in later periods. Thus poetry, the drama and polite literature form the subjects of separate chapters. An author may be mentioned in many chapters: Shakespeare, Grotius, Francis Bacon and Thomas Hobbes appear in half a dozen different places. Fifth edition. Bound by Edmonds and Remnants of London. Complete in four volumes. Condition: In full cloth bindings. Externally, some shelfwear and slight discolouration to extremities. Some small marks to boards. Hinges of volumes III and IV strained. Internally, firmly bound. Good, clean copies with just some scattered light spotting throughout, most prominently to first and last few pages. Overall: GOOD..

        Definitions

New York: Daniel Burgess & Co. 1855 - Asa Smith Illustrated plate Smith’s Illustrated Astronomy New York: Daniel Burgess & Co., 1855 Hand-colored wood engraving 16 ½” x 18” framed; professionally framed in a museum quality frame, with hand-painted gold leaf stars, mounted with all archival materials and uv plexiglass. Science and art come together in Asa Smith’s astronomical illustrations in order to engage even the most difficult of audidences: students. Smith’s Illustrated Astronomy became the most popular American pictorial astronomy book of the 19th century, demonstrating the important effect visual stimulus plays. Written by the principal of Public School No. 12 in New York City, Asa Smith, this work culminates in one of the most historically and artistically important manifestations of astral iconography published in America. Certainly, in addition to their lavish aesthetic appeal, the astronomical illustrations of Asa Smith comprise one of the most visually effective illustrations of the Universive. Indeed, Smith stated his goal as “to present all the distinguishing principles in physical Astronomy with as few words as possible.” The charts of the planets and stars are printed predominantly in black, which makes the images as similar as possible to what one would actually see in the night skies, in addition to creating a pleasing asethtic. Originally copyrighted in 1848, numerous editions followed including the 1855 edition prints shown here. Of all the sciences, the history of astronomy is the most resonant with a sense of mystery and intellectual excitement. Asa Smith’s illustrations of the universe succeed in conveying that resonance.

        Der Blick in den Spiegel
