History of the Indian Tribes of North America with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs. Embellished with one hundred and twenty portraits, from the Indian Gallery in the Department of War, at Washington.

Philadelphia Published by D. Rice & A.N. Hart 1855 - With 120 Fine Hand-Colored Lithographed Plates of American Indians McKENNEY, Thomas L., and James Hall. History of the Indian Tribes of North America, with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs. Embellished with one hundred and twenty portraits, from the Indian Gallery in the Department of War, at Washington. Philadelphia: Published by D. Rice & A.N. Hart, 1855. Third octavo edition. Three large octavo volumes. iv, 333, [1, blank]; xvii, [1, blank], [9]-290; iv, [17]-392 pp. With 120 hand-colored lithographed plates ("Lith. Printed & Cold. by J.T Bowen"). With tissue guards. Original brown morocco. Boards ruled and decoratively stamped in blind. Spines lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Dentelles stamped in blind. Some very minor rubbing to boards. A small amount of toning throughout, mainly to tissue guards. Previous owner's small bookplate on front pastedown of each volume. Overall a very nice set. Originally published in twenty folio parts (three folio volumes) between 1836 and 1844, with 120 hand-colored lithographed plates. The first octavo edition appeared in 1848-1850, with the plates reduced. Several octavo editions were published between 1850 and the 1870s, with varying numbers of plates, some maintaining the original 120, and some abridged to contain as few as forty or fifty plates. All are highly desired today. "As early as 1824, the practice was begun of taking portraits of the principal Indians who came to Washington, and depositing them in the War Department. They were chiefly painted by Mr. King, an artist of high repute, who has been remarkably successful in transferring to his canvas the strong lineaments of the Indian countenance. Col. M’Kinney [sic], who was for many years superintendent of Indian affairs at Washington, and was thus brought in constant association with the principal men of the nations and tribes which sent representatives to the seat of government, conceived the plan of making this rare and curious collection more valuable to the world by publishing a series of engraved portraits exactly copies and colored from these paintings. With each portrait is connected a biographical sketch of the individual whom it is intended to represent, interspersed with anecdotes and narrations. The work contains also a historical account of the various Indian tribes within the borders of the United States" (Sabin 43410a, describing the 1836-1844 edition). "The original oil paintings of which the plates were copies were all destroyed in the 1865 Smithsonian fire" (Howes). Howes M-129 ("the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed"). Sabin 43411 (describing the 1850 octavo edition). Field 992 (1837 ed.). Howes M-129. Howes. Sabin 43411. Streeter. HBS 67365. $18,500 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Manifesto, which the General of Brigade, don Jose Figueroa, commandant-general and political chief of U. California, makes to the Mexican Republic, in regard to his conduct and that of the Snrs. d. Jose Maria de Hijars and d. Jose Maria Padres, as directors of colonization in 1833 and 1834

Herald Office, San Francisco 1855 - (8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches). 104,[1]pp. Contemporary purple calf, covers bordered with a gilt roll tool, upper cover lettered in gilt, flat spine with gilt rules Provenance: booklabel on the front pastedown The scarce first English-language edition of Figueroa's defense of his conduct in a California colonization plan, following the extremely rare first edition of 1835, which was the first book-length imprint from Agustin Zamorano's pioneer California press. Hijar and Padres planned a project of colonizing California in the early 1830s, which brought to California many families who played a prominent role in the development of the province. The Mexican government secularized the missions in 1833, and the expectation was that the families would take possession of the mission lands. Hijar and Padres themselves expected to given governmental positions of importance. Orders from Mexico countermanded the promises, and Figueroa, governor of California, refused to hand over the lands, for which he was criticized. This is Figueroa's defense of his conduct. This edition is considered quite rare, and Howes affords it a "c" rating. Cowan, p.210; Graff 1320; Greenwood 562; Howes F122, "c."; Streeter Sale 2784; Zamorano 80, 37 (note).         Manuscript notebook account of the last months of his wife Mary???s life

Hagley Hall: 1855-1857. 8vo. 69 pp. Manuscript. Bound in limp cloth, faded, especially at backstrip. Marbled edges. In very good conditon. A ???Victorian deathbed account??? of Mary Lyttleton, née Gladstone, sister-in-law to Prime Minister W.E. Gladstone, compiled by her husband George Lyttleton. According to DNB a few copies of this manuscript were made for the family, not for publication or even distribution outside the immediate family, perhaps due to sensitivity to the mental health issues of Lord Lyttelton who eventually succeeded in committing suicide. DNB notes: ???Lyttelton's wife, Mary, died in 1857, exhausted by childbearing and leaving eight sons and four daughters. The third son, Neville Gerald Lyttelton, had a military career; the fifth son, Arthur Temple Lyttelton, was a bishop; the eighth son, Alfred Lyttelton, became colonial secretary; and the seventh son, Edward Lyttelton, was a schoolmaster and a cricketer. The second daughter, Lucy Caroline [see Cavendish, Lucy Caroline, under Cavendish, Lord Frederick Charles], was a churchwoman and promoter of women's education, as was the third daughter, Lavinia [see Talbot, Lavinia]. On occasion, the family fielded a full cricket eleven of Lytteltons.â?

Land, Labour, and Gold; or, Two Years in Victoria: with Visits to Sydney and Van Diemen's Land

London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1855. Two volumes, octavo, original green cloth (joints expertly strengthened and headbands repaired); with the 24 pp. advertisements in the second volume not noted by Ferguson; very good set. The state of affairs before the Eureka Stockade. First edition of a classic; probably the best of the digger narratives, it is a lively account of colonial and goldfields life noted for its vivid immediacy. Howitt attempts a thorough critique of colonial society, informed by his own radical liberalism. Writing before Eureka, his candid and reasoned criticism of the land laws and the administration of the goldfields gave articulate expression to the concerns and aspirations of the emigrant diggers. This set is from the library of the Chambers Institution, with bookplates, and later from the collection of Dr. Robert Edwards, AO.

Piatti marmorizzati. Punte in pergamena. Tagli a spruzzo azzurri. Bellissimo esemplare. Prima edizione. Lozzi, 6187. Inghirami, I, 268. Graesse, II, 551. Cfr. Carlo Fantappié in D.B.I., XLIV, 1994. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Wien, 5. V. 1855.. 1 S. Folio. Halbseitig beschrieben..
