11 tlw. eigenh. Briefe m. Unterschrift.

Alexandria, 1855-1963.. Zus. 91 S., 8°. u. 4°.. -

Essai sur l'Inegalite des Races Humaines.

Paris & Hanover: Firmin Didot freres & Rumpler, 1853-1855 - 4 volumes, octavo (214 × 128 mm). Contemporary French red quarter morocco, decorative gilt spines, red morocco-grain cloth boards, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. A little foxing. All half-titles present. A very attractive set of this very scarce work, according to En francais dans le texte only 500 sets were printed. First edition of Gobineau's magnum opus and a work which made a deep and dark impression on European thought and action, albeit one "quite disproportionate to its scholarly insignificance and inconsequential argumentation" (Printing and the Mind of Man). Gobineau (1816-1882) "proclaimed the theory, since entirely disproved, that "race" is a permanent and immutable phenomenon, and he proclaimed the unchallengeable superiority of the white race over all others (.) This farrago of biological nonsense, wishful romanticism and imperialistic dreams was lapped up eagerly by French and German intellectuals" (PMM). The influence on German thinkers and artists such as Nietzsche and Wagner led to Gobineau's theories feeding down to Hitler and the Nazis. En francais dans le texte 271; Printing and the Mind of Man 335.

The Practice of Photography, A Manual for Students and Amateurs

Photographic Instituion, London, Hardcover (Original Cloth), Book Condition: Very Good Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket, Revised EditionDELAMOTTE, PHILIP H. The Practice of Photography, A Manual for Students and Amateurs, London: Photographic Institution, 1855. 12mo, second edition, revised, pp. viii, 166, 10 (ads), original green cloth boards with blind-stamped decoration and gilt-stamped lettering on upper panel, rebound and rebacked, with two blanks added to the front and one blank added to the rear. Frontis albumen print, rear endpage with a manuscript formula for "Writing upon glass." The author famously photographed London's Crystal Palace while it was under construction from 1851 to 1854. The print (about 3.75x5.5 inches or 9x14cm) he used for the frontispiece here shows the Colossi of Aboo Simbel display in the Palace, near completion. This manual is very scarce in any edition. The formula set down by hand here apparently provides a way to get captions into prints. It is unknown to me who wrote it. For more on Delamotte's Crystal Palace project, see Parr & Badger, V.1., p. 42. Condition of this book: Boards rubbed at corners. Leaves tight, but the frontis is foxed, mostly off the image, with soiling in the gutter. The image itself is surprisingly sharp but with the yellowing common to albumen prints, and the darker areas showing some mirroring. Size: 12mo. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; Britain/UK; 19th century; Photography. Inventory No: 52116.

Okazaki, 39th station, yahagi no hashi-te (Yahagi Bridge)

Edo, Japan: Tsuta-ya Kichizo, 1855. The print being offered is from the 1855 series, Pictures of Famous Places on the Fifty-three Stations, also known as the Vertical Tôkaidô, i.e., in portrait orientation. Artist: Hiroshige, 1797-1858. Title: Okazaki, 39th station, yahagi no hashi-te (Yahagi Bridge). Series: Gojûsan tsugi meisho zue (Pictures of Famous Places on the Fifty-three Stations). Medium: Ukiyo-e. Woodblock Print. Date seal: nengetsu 1855 hare (Ansei 2), month 7. This is believed to be an early pull of an early [?] edition, and not a later reprint or a reproduction. Note, however, John Fiorillo's observation, "How can we possibly identify which impressions belong to which editions of Hiroshige's 1855 series 'Gojûsan tsugi meisho zue', which is said to have been periodically re-published from the original blocks until the 1880s?" Size (HxW):14.5" x 9.6" oban tate-e. Signature: Hiroshige ga. Publisher's mark of Tsuta-ya Kichizo. Condition: Very good impression, almost no soiling, colors very little faded, no creasing observed, two very small thin backing paper pieces attached to the reverse of the right margin, margins mostly intact. Sharp, mostly unbroken key block lines and with well-registered colors. Superb color choices. Grey-green river-bank, bridge supports and distant mountains, light jade green foliage at opposite river-bank, pinkish-beige upper structure of bridge, very light aqua-marine skyline as well as river, with deep blue in river foreground, with purple-tinged sky at the top. A somewhat serene image, with several pedestrians crossing the bridge, three small boats floating on the river, and a man washing a horse in the foreground. Compare to a probably very early copy in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, collection. Strikingly similar except that the MFA print with a red sky at the top and a blue-black river-bank at the bottom.. Signed by Illustrator. Very Good. Illus. by Hiroshige. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

The Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland. By Thomas Moore, Edited by John Lindley. Nature-Printed by Henry Bradbury

London: Published by Bradbury and Evans, 1855 [-1856]. First edition, folio, [10, 152]pp., 51 leaves of nature-printed plates, all printed in colours, by Bradbury & Evans under the direction of Henry Bradbury, some slight spotting and offsetting from tissue guards, endpapers, title and a few preliminary leaves a little creased, tear to centre of title expertly repaired with archival paper, several other expert repairs to a couple of text leaves, cont. half green morocco, rebacked with the original spine laid-down all edges gilt. First edition of Bradbury's chef d'oeuvre and a fine example of Nature Printing. Henry Bradbury (1831-1860), eldest son of William Bradbury of Bradbury & Evans, published the present work in 17 monthly parts between June 1855 and September 1856. With text by Thomas Moore (curator of the Chelsea botanic garden and co-editor of Gardener's Chronicle) and edited by John Lindley (1799-1865), the work was one of the first of the genre printed in Britain. Bradbury went on to publish an octavo edition of the present work and a four-volume work with nature-printed plates of sea-weeds. It is not known how the controversy surrounding nature printing affected Bradbury, but he committed suicide at the age of 29 by drinking acid. He left a number of unrealised projects, including two further nature-printed works on fungi and trees. The story behind the development of Nature Printing and Bradbury's role in this development has been most extensively detailed by Cave & Wakeman. Fischer 89; Nissen BBI 1400; Stafleu & Cowan 6275; Cave & Wakeman, Typographia Naturalis.

Journal kept during the Russian War:

London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans,, 1855. From the Departure of the Army from England in April, 1854, to the Fall of Sebastopol. Octavo. Original brown blind-stamped sand-grained cloth, title gilt to the spine, terracotta endpapers with ads to the pastedowns. A little rubbed, corners bumped, spine sunned, slight lean and mildly shaken, overall a very good copy. First edition. Elusive and highly desirable narrative of the Crimean War by the wife of Paymaster Henry Duberly of the 8th Hussars, part of the legendary light brigade. "Although she missed the battle of the Alma and saw only the aftermath of the battle of Inkerman, she witnessed the cavalry charges at Balaklava and the assault on Malakhov, experienced the winter privations, and rode into Sevastopol soon after it fell. Fanny recorded these events daily. She possessed a ready pen, eyes perceptive to detail, youthful self-confidence, and an incisive style softened by candid pathos. Anonymous extracts from her letters home were leaked to the London press, encouraging her to ask her sister Selina's husband, Francis Marx, to edit her journal for publication. He toned down suspected indiscretions and the book reads less vividly than her letters (now held in the British Library), but a convincing realism survived the excisions and the Journal Kept during the Russian War sold well at Christmas 1855. Readers who anticipated a more heroic romanticism were, however, left uneasy, while Queen Victoria was offended by Fanny's ingenuous wilfulness" (ODNB).

The American Flora, or History of Plants and Wild Flowers: containing their scientific and general description, natural history, chemical and medical properties, mode of culture, propagation, &c. designed as a book of reference for ... (Truncated)

Hull & Spencer, 1855, Hardcover, Book Condition: Good ConditionFull Book Title: The American Flora, or History of Plants and Wild Flowers: containing their scientific and general description, natural history, chemical and medical properties, mode of culture, propagation, &c. designed as a book of reference for botanists, physicians, florists, gardeners, students, etc.Size: 19cm x 24,5cm, The American Flora, or History of Plants and Wild Flowers: containing their scientific and general description, natural history, chemical and medical properties, mode of culture, propagation, &c. designed as a book of reference for botanists, physicians, florists, gardeners, students, etc. // New York // Hull & Spencer, 1855, 4 volumes, octavo. 4 lithographic frontispieces (1 uncoloured portrait of the author, 1 hand-coloured portrait of Linnaeus, 2 hand-coloured plates), 4 hand-coloured lithographic additionnal titles, 182 lithographic plates, some printed in colours, all finished by hand, extra-illustrated with a duplicate plate in vol. III ('Belladonna Lily') and 4 leaves of duplicate text (pp. 35-42), also in vol. III. (Some spotting and browning as usual). Original publisher's red cloth gilt, covers with a gilt-ruled border around a large rococo design incorporating the title, the flat spine with a decorative overall design incorporating the title, volume number and the publisher's name at the foot, gilt edges (small expert repairs to spines). Covers are lightly rubbed and soiled, but still in good condition and tight. // A beautifully bound four-volume set of the later issue of this complicated work with charming plates, including the very rare fourth volume: "Complete sets... are extremely difficult to locate" (Bennett). This work was first issued periodically between 1846 and 1850. The present re-issue was published in 1855 and is recorded, with a limited amount of detail, by Stafleu & Cowan (they admit that their data is "obviously incomplete"). A definitive collation for this work is problematic, as Stafleu & Cowan state: "The copies listed in the National Union Catalog show a great variation." Bennett writes: "The publisher clearly did not count pages of color plates when listing the numbers on the title pages, but counted every separate item on each page." (p.103). The present copy with its duplicate plate and text bears mute testament to the haphazard production methods applied to this work, whilst the binding is a very fine example of decorated publisher's cloth - the gilt design blocked on the covers is particularly note-worthy. Friederich Quenstedt (1809-1889), German paleontologist and mineralogist. In crystallography Quenstedt extended the work of C. Weiss, and in geology that of L. von Buch. It begins with a short history of mineralogy, which is followed in the introductory portion by discussions of goniometers, crystallographic notation and methods of projection, descriptions of the crystal systems, Haüy's and Levy's crystallography, optics, polarized light, optical properties, and pseudomorphs. The descriptive porition of the text reviews the reasons for systematic mineralogy and then persents the descriptive mineralogy. A reference list concludes the work" (Schuh, Biobliography of Mineralogy).

In 1826 Ménétires was invited to St Petersburg and became curator of the entomological collections of the Zoological Museum of the Academy of Sciences and the present work describes the butterflies of the collection. Together with Eduard von Eversmann, Fischer de Waldheim, Ménétries became one of the most important Russian entomologists.//Provenance: Bookplate of Otto Bang-Haas and Japanese stamp of Kikumaro Okano on title.//Horn-Schenkling 14933.

London: W.H. Smith and Son, 1855 - Small octavo (164 × 97 mm) Original red embossed cloth, title gilt within laurel wreath to the upper board, mid-blue surface-paper endpapers. Very slightly rubbed, mild off-set from the card at the endpapers, but overall a really excellent copy. Die-cut and embossed memorial card "Sacred to the Memory of the Heroes slain in the Battles of Alma, Inkerman & the Eastern War." First edition. Extremely uncommon memorial volume - just 4 copies on OCLC, none in the US, all but the BL copy apparently second editions - this much enhanced by the addition of the extremely attractive card, which, mounted against the blue of the endpapers, gives the impression of a Wedgwood plaque. This copy with the ownership inscription of the Rev. J.N. Dalton, tutor to Queen Victoria's grandsons Prince Albert Victor (Eddy), Duke of Clarence and Avondale, and his younger brother Prince George, Duke of York (afterwards George V).
