Autograph Letter Signed (with Signed Pamphlet by Stephens sent with letter)

Two pages on folded mourning stationary. "9 Hammersmith Terrace. London W. 19.2.06" written at top, to Whitworth Wallis (1855-1927), the first director of the Birmingham Museum and received knighthood in 1912. "Dear Mr. Wallis, I'm sending you a copy of my protest against Mr. Holman Hunt's outrageous attacks. I have partly explained what has been the cause of my delay in reply... it will give me great pleasure to show you and Mr. Holliday what drawings I have here, the most important of which is Rossetti's 'Hesterna Rosa.'" The four-page quarto-size 'pamphlet' is inscribed by Stephens and dated at top, with a small note at end. An interesting uproar had occurred over Hunt's published autobiography in which Hunt put forward 'grave charges against me [Stephens] regarding the grossest of which I trust you will... allow me to plead." An unfortunate split between Hunt and Stephens, former close friends and associates in the PRB, had begun years earlier in Hunt's criticisms of the Royal Academy to which Stephens was closely allied. Near fine.

The Sydney Drawing Book [later Elementary Free-hand Book] composed of Little Scraps for Little Hands in a Progressive Course

Sydney: Gibbs, Shallard, & Co., Lithograph and Letterpress Printers, 108 Pitt Street, n.d. but circa, 1855. Five fascicles, oblong octavo, each containing four unnumbered leaves of lithographed sketches; in good condition apart from some light foxing, each stitch-sewn in the original pink and blue printed wrappers, becoming brittle, preserved in a green cloth box. Rare and probably all issued; the two sets known to Ferguson (Dixson and Mitchell Libraries) and other sets since identified are also composed, like this set, of numbers 1-2 and 4-6 (the latter with the new title Elementary Free-hand Book). As Ferguson noted of the Dixson set, number 5 here is present in the third edition and number 6 in the fourth.Fowles arrived in Sydney in 1838. He was a popular artist and illustrator and by 1855 he was training art teachers in drawing for the National Board of Education; he received a royal appointment and was drawing master to many of Sydney's private schools, including Sydney Grammar and The King's School. At his death he was described as the "Father of drawing in the city".Gibbs, Shallard, and Company were enormously important Sydney printers, active under that name from around 1866 through to 1892. Prior to that date Shallard has been in business with Clarson, while Gibbs worked for them, chiefly responsible for publishing the Illustrated Sydney News. On 1 January 1866 a new arrangement was struck, forming the new partnership of Gibbs and Shallard in Sydney, and Clarson, Massina, & Co. in Melbourne. Ferguson, 9713 & 9714.

        Biographical Memoir of John Montagu

London: Harrison, 1855. Thick octavo, portrait frontispiece; a very good copy in original blind-stamped cloth. Fascinating work on colonial affairs, of particular note for the governorship of Tasmania. This is the copy of Adam Turnbull who served with Montagu in his time as Colonial Secretary under Governors Arthur and Sir John Franklin.Montagu, married to Arthur's neice, was an efficient reformer of the civil service, but was perceived by Sir John Franklin as one of the Arthur's 'clique', which Franklin was keen to break. Personal differences between Montagu and Franklin escalated in the wake of conflicting views on transportation and a charge (later quashed) that Montagu had been behind an article besmirching Franklin. Turnbull (an anti-transportationist, surgeon & Presbyterian Minister), along with Sir John Pedder attempted mediation but to no avail. With an appealing blind stamp of the Hobart bookseller Walch. not in Ferguson.

A SYNOPSIS OF THE CLASSIFICATION OF THE BRITISH PALAEOZOIC ROCKS. With a description of the BRITISH PALAEOZOIC FOSSILS in the Geological Museum of the University of Cambridge.

London, John Parke and Son; Cambridge, Deighton Bell & Co., 1855.FIRST EDITION EDITION 1855. THERE ARE 2 PRESENTATION LABELS, ONE FROM W. W. WATTS and ANOTHER FROM O. M. B. BULMAN. Thick 4to, approximately 325 x 260 mm, 12¾ x 10 inches, 25 full page lithograph plates, 2 double page, each with a page of explanatory text at rear of volume, pages: xcviii, viii, 1 - 644, viii, [645] - 661 including index, original publisher's brown cloth, gilt lettering and decoration to spine and gilt coat of arms to upper cover, original pale yellow endpapers. Binding slightly rubbed, 1 inch split to top of lower hinge, corners slightly worn and bumped, pale foxing and age - browning to the first three pages and the last three, occasional brown spot, otherwise a very good copy. Adam Sedgwick (1785?"1873), British palaeontologist; namer of the Devonian and Cambrian periods. One of the foremost scientists of his era. Charles Darwin attended Sedgwick's lectures In the summer of 1831 and just before Darwin sailed aboard the H.M.S. Beagle, Sedgwick took him on a "geologising" trip through northern Wales, where he taught him how to draw geological maps and to collect and describe specimens. This experience stood Darwin in good stead on the voyage, and he later sent Sedgwick many of the fossils he collected during the course of his duties as the Beagle's shipboard naturalist. Though he had guided the young Charles Darwin in his early study of geology and continued to be on friendly terms, Sedgwick was an opponent of Darwin's theory of evolution by means of natural selection. See: Dictionary of Scientific Biography, Volume XII, page 275. William Whitehead Watts FRS was a British geologist, whose label is on the first free endpaper, and Oliver Meredith Boone Bulman was a British palaeontologist, whose label is on the pastedown. He was Woodwardian Professor of Geology at the University of Cambridge. (Wikipedia). MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.         Autograph manuscript titled:] The effect of heat upon the absolute magnetic force of bodies.

[London, not after November 22 1855] - Half page on a folded folio sheet (322 x 420 mm), 20 lines, with a few corrections, the sheet folded for posting, labelled on outside in ms 'Mr Faraday abstract' and 'Abstract of Dr Faraday's Paper', together with enclosing sheet folded for posting, addressed in Faraday's hand to 'Dr [William] Sharpey, Secretary, Royal Society, Somerset House' and with Faraday's signature in lower left corner, with red wax seal (broken), together in a cloth box. £12,500Autograph manuscript by Michael Faraday, an abstract of his paper for the 30th series, section 40, of his Experimental researches in electricity, published as a series of papers in the Transactions of the Philosophical Society between 1832 and 1855. The abstract itself was published before the Phil. trans., in Proceedings of the Royal Society, vol 7, pp 524-6 (1855). This is the only Faraday scientific manuscript I am aware of appearing recently for sale. The full paper was read before the Royal Society on November 22, and published in the Phil. trans. in 1856. Interestingly, the three papers of the 30th series were not included in the collected edition of the papers, volume three, which also appeared in 1855 (nor do they appear in the later reprints). This manuscript represents some of Faraday's final work on electromagnetism, and his experimental investigations of fields of force, the precursor of Maxwell's field theory. It continues the theme of sections 38 and 38, titled respectively 'Constancy of differential magnecrystallic force in different media' and 'Action of heat on magnecrystals'. It begins: 'Results were sought for by which the magnetic force of bodies already examined in the condition of magnecrystals might be compared with the whole paramagnetic or diamagnetic force of the same bodies, taken in the granular or amorphous state.' followed by an examination of the change of magnetic properties in relation to the temperature of the object.'During the 1850s when the stream of highly speculative papers on the nature of force and its transmission were appearing in the Philosophical Magazine . Faraday continued his experimental researches. The concept of the lines of force and the field now provided him with an overall picture of physical reality. The chain, in a sense, was complete. Only here and there was a link missing, and these Faraday sought to discover' (L. Pearce Williams, Michael Faraday, a biography, p 465). 'By the mid-1850s Faraday had gone as far as he could go. He had provided a new perspective for those who would look on all manifestations of force in the phenomenal world. His description of this perspective was fuzzy and imprecise but capable of clarification and precision if taken up by someone who could share Faraday's vision. Such a man was James Clerk Maxwell, who, in the 1850s and 1860s, built field theory on the foundations Faraday had laid' (DSB).Faraday's manuscripts are in the Royal Institution and the Royal Society, including the majority of papers read to these institutions. Letters by Faraday do occasionally appear for sale, but no scientific manuscript has been offered on the market in my experience. Both enclosing sheet and manuscript are on paper watermarked 'W. Stradling 1851'.For the published version see Jeffreys 427 and Wheeler Gift 2998

Folding colour frontispiece (Bird’s Eye View of Niagara), map of Niagara, folding view of Niagara Falls, folding Fossil Mammalian Remains (clumsily repaired); frontispiece (folding colour geological map), view of coal seams in Pennsylvania, folding view footprints of birds on Bay of Fundy. Lyell’s journal of his travels in eastern North America written for the general public, with remarks certainly on geological matters but also, for example, on the nomenclature of places-- traveling out of Albany, Lyell was bemused to find himself visiting Syracuse, Utica, Rome, and Parma; breakfasting at St. Helena and dining at Elba before returning to Albany via Troy. Traveling through the Carolinas, Lyell remarked on the condition of slaves (It didn’t seem to worry him much, as he was wont to think of them as simple and childlike), and upon reaching Philadelphia one of several periodic financial disasters caught his attention. Quite good folding colour maps and additional illustrations in the text. With the bookplate of Sidney Edward Bouverie Bouverie-Pusey (1839- 1911), author of Permanence and Evolution: an Inquiry into the supposed mutability of animal types (London, 1882) and a critic of Darwin (ODNB). "Important Autograph Letter Signed, ""John Brown,"" 1 page, 7.75"" x 9.75"", Rockford, Illinois, June 4, 1855, addressed in his hand on the integral transmittal leaf to ""Henry Thompson North Elba Essex Co. New York."" Brown, who had set out to Illinois to sell of his herd of cattle, writes in full: ""Dear Children[,] I write just to say I have finally sold my cattle without risking much sacrifise [sic]; & expect to be on the way home Tomorrow. Oliver expects to remain behind & go to Kansas. After I get home I expect to set out with the family for North Elba as soon as we can get ready; yet we may possibly get off this week; but hardly think we can. I have heard nothing yet from the Boys at Kansas. All were well at home a few days since. Your affectionate father, John Brown"". True to his word, Brown set out east reaching Hudson, Ohio on June 18, and on June 28 he arrived in Syracuse, New York, just in time for the first day of a major anti-slavery convention where he received ""a most hearty approval of my intention of arming my sons and other friends in Kansas"" from the likes of Gerrit Smith, Frederick Douglass and other prominent abolitionists. This ""hearty approval"" included sixty dollars in donations, with $20 from Gerrit Smith alone. At the convention, Smith proceeded to read aloud two letters from Kansas written by Brown's son John, ""and read with such effect ... as to draw tears from numerous eyes ..."" (Franklin Benjamin Sanborn, The Life and Letters of John Brown, 1891, 193-194)Brown continued on to Springfield, Massachusetts where he shipped some guns and other supplies to Cleveland, and then returned to North Elba to prepare for the journey to Kansas. On August 13, 1855, Brown departed North Elba in the company of the recipient of this letter, Henry Thompson, a staunch abolitionist, who married Brown's daughter Ruth (b. 1829) in 1850. Thompson and Brown arrived in Chicago fifteen days later (picking up Brown's son Oliver in Rockford, Illinois along the way) and purchased a young horse and loaded their wagon with supplies and concealed arms. The three arrived at Brown's Station on October 7, 1855. (David S. Reynolds, John Brown, Abolitionist, 2009, 135-136). The following year, Brown would gain public notoriety when he took matters into his own hands, attacking a pro-slavery settlement north of Pottawatomie Creek, in response to the sacking of Lawrence, Kansas?"starting what became popularly known as ""Bleeding Kansas.""         Scolopendrium vulgare

London.: Bradbury & Evans.. 1855 - 1856.. Nature-printed color plate, sheet 21 3/4 x 14 1/2 inches. Light scattered foxing, 1/4 x 1 1/2 inch abrasion to mid lower edge (outside image and text area); good, bright condition. This beautiful folio-sized antique botanical print is Plate XIII from "The Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland ..., Nature-Printed by Henry Bradbury" published in 1855-1856 "one of the finest pieces of nature-printing ever achieved...The plates were produced 'by passing the plant, under pressure, between a plate of soft lead from which an electrotype could be made' (Blunt). As a result the plates record the smallest details of flowers and the finest venations of leaves. Bradbury, whose father was of the publishing house Bradbury & Evans, studied at the Imperial Printing Office in Vienna." (de Belder catalogue #237). The mania for ferns (or "pteridomania") was one of several plant fixations of the Victorians, fueled by discoveries from abroad and a rapidly expanding middle class interested in plants and gardening; ferns were ideal indoor plants for the Victorian home and their graceful forms were much used in decorative art. .
