In the fall of 1845, the church treated for its safety by promising to leave the State, which it accordingly did in the following winter and spring of 1846." Not in Flake/Draper.         The Poetical Works of William Cowper

Edinburgh - James Nichol, 1854. Edinburgh - James Nichol, 1854 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A set of The Poetical Works of William Cowper with life, critical dissertation, and explanatory notes by the Rev. George Gilfillan. Complete in two volumes. From the introduction: Cowper is one of the few poets who at once attained speedy popularity, and secured permanent power. William Cowper (26 November 1731 25 April 1800) was an English poet and hymnodist. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. In many ways, he was one of the forerunners of Romantic poetry. Samuel Taylor Coleridge called him the best modern poet, whilst William Wordsworth particularly admired his poem Yardley-Oak. He was a nephew of the poet Judith Madan. Although after being institutionalised for insanity in the period 1763-65, Cowper found refuge in a fervent evangelical Christianity, the inspiration behind his much-loved hymns, he often experienced doubt and after a dream in 1773 believed that he was doomed to eternal damnation. His religious sentiment and association with John Newton (who wrote the hymn Amazing Grace) led to much of the poetry for which he is best remembered. His poem Light Shining out of Darkness gave the English language the idiom God moves in a mysterious way / His wonders to perform. Condition: In amateur half calf leather bindings with red cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart with just some minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD.

Handley Cross; Or, Mr. Jorrocks's Hunt

London - Bradbury Evans and Co., 1854. London - Bradbury Evans and Co., 1854 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A superb binding and lovely condition for this favourite. Handley Cross; Or, Mr. Jorrocks's Hunt is a novel by Robert Smith Surtees withillustrations by John Leech including seventeen coloured engravings and numerous further engravings on wood integrated with text. Robert Smith Surtees (1805- 1864) was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer. He left for London in 1825, intending to practise law in the capital, but had difficulty making his way and began contributing to the Sporting Magazine. He launched out on his own with the New Sporting Magazine in 1831, contributing the comic papers which appeared as Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities in 1838. Jorrocks, the sporting cockney grocer, with his vulgarity and good-natured artfulness, was a great success with the public, and Surtees produced more Jorrocks novels in the same vein, notably Handley Cross and Hillingdon Hall. Another hero, Soapey Sponge, appears in Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour, possibly Surtees best work. As a creator of comic personalities, Surtees is still very readable today. Thackeray envied him his powers of observation, while William Morris considered him 'a master of life' and ranked him with Dickens. The novels are engaging and vigorous, and abound with sharp social observation, with a keener eye than Dickens for the natural world. Surtees most resembles the Dickens of Pickwick Papers, which was originally intended as mere supporting matter for a series of sporting illustrations to rival Jorrocks. Most of Surtees's later novels, were illustrated by John Leech (1817 - 1864) an English caricaturist and illustrator. They included Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour; Ask Mamma; Plain or Ringlets and Mr Facey Romford's Hounds. With WHS binder's stamp to rear pastedown. Condition: In a spectacular morocco binding. Externally, in a lovely condition with only minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with occasional slight spotting mostly to first few pages and plates and the odd handling mark to pages and a small ink annotation to list of illustrations. Overall: NEAR FINE.

A collection of essays from the Edinburgh Review written by Thomas Babington Macaulay, poet and politician. This model of human progress has been called the Whig interpretation of history. This philosophy appears most clearly in the essays Macaulay wrote for the Edinburgh Review. Complete in two volumes.         The Newcomes. Memoirs of a Most Respectable Family, Edited by Arthur Pendennis, Esq

London - Bradbury and Evans 1854 - %0D%0A%0D%0AA first edition of William Makepeace Thackeray's 'The Newcomes' - volume one. %0D%0AThe novel tells the story of Colonel Thomas Newcome, a virtuous and upstanding character. It is equally the story of Colonel Newcome's son, Clive, who studies and travels for the purpose of becoming a painter, although the profession is frowned on by some of his relatives and acquaintances notably Clive's snobbish, backstabbing cousin Barnes Newcome. %0D%0AThe colonel and Clive are only the central figures in The Newcomes, the action of which begins before the colonel's birth. Over several generations the Newcome family rises into wealth and respectability as bankers and begin to marry into the minor aristocracy. A theme that runs throughout the novel is the practice of marrying for money. Herein we find first use of the coined word capitalism , as reference an economic system. Religion is another theme, particularly Methodism. %0D%0AThe Newcomes was published serially over about two years, as Thackeray himself says in one of the novel's final chapters. The novel shows its serial origin: it is very long (an undated but clearly very old edition with tiny type fills 551 pages) and its events occur over many years and in several countries before the reader reaches the predictable conclusion. The main part of The Newcomes is set a decade or two after the action of Vanity Fair, and some of the characters in Vanity Fair are mentioned peripherally in The Newcomes. The narrator is Arthur Pendennis, the protagonist of Pendennis. %0D%0AWilliam Makepeace Thackeray (1811 1863) was an English novelist of the 19th century. He was famous for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair, a panoramic portrait of English society%0D%0AThe volume is illustrated throughout by Richard Doyle (1824 - 1883), a notable illustrator of the Victorian era. %0D%0ACondition: %0D%0ARe-backed calf binding.         Treasures of Art in Great Britain: Being an Account of the Chief Collections of Paintings, Drawings, Sculptures, Illuminated MSS &c. In three volumes

London - John Murray, 1854. London - John Murray, 1854 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Waagen's scarce seminal work,a journey of discovery into British art by an expert visiting England from Germany, cataloguing the art treasuresin private collectionsof the 1850s. Bookseller's stamp of Knibb, Leamington to front pastedowns. Binder's stamp of Edmonds and Remnants, London to the rear pastedown of volume I. With copperplate signatures to front pastedowns. Publisher's catalogue to rear of volume II. Waagen's publications highlighted the hitherto unknown wealth of the private collections of Great Britain, while his application of the new techniques of German art historical studies and museology revolutionized British practice. Treasures of Art in Great Britain was a straightforward catalogue of the 200 most important collections of the country, the most complete survey ever made. Waagen was the first to question many of the legendary and optimistic attributions of pictures in the private collections of the British aristocracy: his Treasures of Art is still used in auction rooms today to establish a painting's provenance and quality. Through his detailed study of British collections, his desire to enlighten a nation which he considered in need of education in art historical matters, his fluent advocacy of the seriousness of the fine arts and their economic and social importance, Waagen shaped the development of public provision for the arts in Britain to a greater extent than any of his peers. DNB Dr Waagen was director of the Royal Gallery of Pictures, Berlin. Condition: In originalcloth bindings, could be rebound. Externally, bumped and rubbed to extremities with wear to the spine tops and tails. Half the backstrip of volume I is coming away. Two joints are cracked, three starting.         The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

      - London - John Murray, 1854. - London - John Murray, 1854 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A detailed account of the final days of the Roman Empire, and the reasons behind its collapse from eminent historian Edward Gibbon. Illustrated with14 maps, most of which are folding and coloured, andone plate (collated, complete). Gibbon offers an explanation for why the Roman Empire fell, a task made difficult by a lack of comprehensive written sources, though he was not the only historian to tackle the subject. Most of his ideas are directly taken from what few relevant records were available: those of the Roman moralists of the 4th and 5th centuries. Gibbon's prose, the vehicle for this subtle historical vision, has been found by some to be decorous and mannered to a fault. Perhaps this estimation relies on no very close reading, since Gibbon's writing arguably does exhibit change and development within an overall continuity of manner. But if it were truly so, then this would enforce the judgement that the Decline and Fall is a very different book when viewed in the perspective of literary aesthetics, rather than as a contribution to a series of intellectual debates. For in the latter, the Decline and Fall is remarkable for the way Gibbon pushed at the edges of received opinions, and found fresh and fruitful ways of linking approaches and subjects which elsewhere lay unconnected. It is for this reason that the Decline and Fall occupies the summit of European Enlightenment historiography. It engages with, carries forward, and extends what is most vital in that body of writing. (DNB)Three volume bound by Nutt of Cambridge (binder's ink stamp to verso of front free-endpaper). Complete in eight volumes. Condition: Three volumes in calf bindings, and five volumes rebacked in morocco with the original baords preserved. Externally, sound, though with some rubbing and a few white marks. Loss to head of two spines. Three joints starting, with one joint failed and board detached. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright, though with some scattered foxing (prominent to the first and last few pages) and some foxingfrom the plates. Overall: GOOD..
