Discoveries in the Ruins of Nineveh and Babylon

1853. LAYARD, Austen H. Discoveries in the Ruins of Nineveh and Babylon; with Travels in Armenia, Kurdistan and the Desert: Being the Result of a Second Expedition undertaken for the Trustees of the British Museum. xxiii, [1], 686, [2] pp. Illustrated with 5 folding maps and plans, 11 engraved plates of the ruins and their environs (2 folding), and 232 woodcuts illustrating the text, many being full-page. 8vo., 221 x 140 mm, bound in the original (and famous) Edmonds & Remnants blind-stamped brown ribbed cloth, blocked to a Babylonian motif, portraying a human-headed bull in profile, his wings spread round the upper covers, within a frame below a sample of cuneiform script, spine title lettered in gilt within the statue's breastplate, printed brick-red endpapers. London: John Murray, 1853. First Edition of Layard's account of his historic expedition, in which he investigated the ruins of Babylon and the mounds of southern Mesopotamia. Of the eleven engraved plates, six are in lithograph (three tinted). Until Layard's exploration, the identification of the site of Nineveh had long perplexed various archeologists. His excavations revealed palaces and a cuneiform library. The city of Nineveh, which is often mentioned in the Bible, was the capital of the Assyrian empire and reached its full glory under Sennacherib and Assurbanipal. The city fell in 612 B.C. to a coalition of Babylonians, Medes and Scythians. The successful results of the years Layard spent among the ruins are, of course, renowned. Some isolated foxing as usual. The elaborate Victorian publisher's binding (reproduced by Abbey on Plate XX) is in unusually fine condition. Blackmer 969. Abbey, Travel 364. Cat. Russica, No. L370.

Schoolteacher's letter describing a young slave's attack upon attack upon three children in her classroom

Wading River, Long Island, New York 1853 - This 4-page letter from a schoolteacher to her aunt, apparently in Bridgeport, Connecticut, measures approximately 6.5" x 8.5". It is in very nice shape. Much of the letter concerns news about family and friends, however Clarissa notes that "My school is not yet out but will be soon, and then I shall feel my self quite at liberty. I usually have 9 scholars, more than half must to be read in words of one or two syllables, which makes it quite tiresome and dull to me. But I have very little troble to make them mind; most are very good." However, she devotes two paragraphs to: "quite a scene [that] occurred at school. While myself and the elder children had gone to the beach for a walk, a colored boy belonging to Mr. Paynes came into the school room and began to beat three little children I had left there-two of them was not much hurt, but Laura Ann Hulse was badly injured. Her back was fairly black & blue, and the skin was broke in many places. Her head was all bloody and her hand and arms much swollen where he had beat her with my ruler which he took from the desk. The children were too small to offer any resistance, and he told them if they attempted to make any noise, he would kill them. Mrs. Hulse took the child before the 'village squire' and obtained a warrant for his apprehension. Accordingly, on Monday afternoon, he was carried to jail, where his is to stay three months." This calls to mind Nat Turner's massacre of ten white children at Waller's School, and even though Long Island in 1853 was a far cry from Southampton County, Virginia in 1831, it's quite surprising that Mr. Paynes' slave received such a light sentence for his violent and bloody attack upon these students. Very scarce. As of 2017, other than the testimony associated with Nat Turner's rebellion, no other first-hand manuscript accounts of such attacks are held by institutions per OCLC. None are in the trade; and no similar auction records are found at Rare Book Hub or ABPC.

ONE OF THE BEST AND CERTAINLY THE FUNNIEST ILLUSTRATED GOLD RUSH LETTERSHEETS; The Miner's Ten Commandments. Composed by Forty-Nine (James M. Hutchings), and illustrated by Harrison Eastman

San Francisco: Sun Print, 1853. Unbound. Very good. This lettersheet is printed on light blue paper measuring approximately 9.25" x 11.25". The text of the commandments is printed in three centered columns bordered on the right, left, and bottom by ten corresponding vignettes that satirically illustrate each An eleventh vignette, at the top center, features an elephant using its trunk to call a miner's attention to a Ten Commandments broadside that has been posted to the wall of "a clapboard shanty.". Unused and clean with two horizontal and three vertical folds. Minor edge-wear and pinholes at three of the fold junctions. The humorous, tongue-in-cheek, proscriptive Miner's Ten Commandments addressed bad habits, inappropriate behavior, and temptations associated with Gold Rush life: claim jumping, stealing, fighting, gambling, drinking, cheating, lying, etc. (A transcription of the commandments is included.). James M. Hutchings, who had made a fortune in the initial Gold Rush of 1849 but lost it all in a bank failure, first published his parody in the Placerville Herald newspaper in 1853. After it was reprinted as a lettersheet, it proved quite popular with the miners and was so profitable for that he was able to begin publishing his Illustrated California Magazine and amass a fortune once more. An early settler in and fierce promoter of the Yosemite Valley, Hutchings operated the Calaveras Big Tree Grove Hotel. Milford (B-167) notes that this was probably the most popular of the Gold Rush lettersheets. He also notes that the elephant was an allusion an American idiom popularized during the Mexican-American War, "If one has seen the elephant, on has seen it all," which refers to gaining worldly experience at a significant cost. Not often found in condition this nice.

Philadelphia 371 Walnut Street 1853 - Quarto (28.5 x 25 cm), iv, 1011 pp., 2 blank family record leaves, short closed tear to leaf F3, some light foxing. Contemporary calf gilt, spine in six compartments, red morocco label lettered in gilt to second, raised bands. A very good copy. The first complete translation of the Old Testament by a Jewish translator into English. This work was built upon Leeser's 1845 translation of the five books of the Torah. Previous editions published by Jewish translators in England (such as Levi and Alexander) had simply utilized the King James translation. Leeser's preface explains that this massive undertaking sprung from "a desire entertained for more than a quarter of a century, since the day he quitted school in his native land to come to this country, to present to his fellow-Israelites an English version, made by one of themselves, of the Holy Word of God." Readers would now "have an opportunity to study a version of the Bible which has not been made by the authority of churches in which they have no confidence." Rabbi Isaac Leeser (1806-1868) was born in Germany and emigrated to America in 1824. The head rabbi of the Synagogue Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia, he became America's most influential Jewish writer, editor, and teacher. He promulgated Jewish culture and religious activity in the United States by providing American Jews with the numerous basic religious texts and conceptual tools they needed. Goldman 12 ("first English translation of the complete Bible by a Jew"); Hills 1540; Singerman 1271; Wright, page 124. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        H. R. 336 [To accompany report no. 421.]

Washington DC, 1853. United States. Senate. 32nd Congress, 2nd Session. H. R. 336 [To accompany report no. 421.] In the Senate of the United States. February 19, 1853 . . . Amendment . . . 3pp. [Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1853.] 297 x 205 mm. Unbound. Some dampstaining, edges a bit frayed but very good. Docketed. First Edition of this rare ether controversy document, with no copies listed in OCLC. In January 1853, responding to renewed debate over who deserved credit for inventing ether anesthesia, the U. S. Senate appointed a select committee to determine whether W. T. G. Morton, Charles Jackson or Horace Wells had the best claim to the discovery. On February 19 Senator Isaac P. Walker, the committee's chairman, submitted an amendment to army appropriations bill H. R. 336, confirming the U. S. government's right to use and benefit from the discovery and proposing an award of $100,000 to "the discoverer." The final version of the amendment, which we are offering here, also proposed that the issue of priority be decided in federal court, with Morton, Jackson and the representatives of Horace Wells appearing as defendants to prove the merits of their respective cases. The Senate ended up rejecting the amendment, leaving the question of priority unsettled for the time. Wolfe, Tarnished Idol, pp. 316-17; 330-335.

THE WORKS IN PROSE AND VERSE

William Pickering, London 1853 - 229 x 152 mm. (9 x 6"). Two volumes. Extremely pleasing contemporary Cambridge-style calf, handsomely gilt, covers with mitered-corner gilt frame formed by plain and decorative rules bounding an inch-wide inlay of lighter tan calf, fleuron cornerpieces extending obliquely from the frame, raised bands, spines densely gilt in compartments with large central fleuron enclosed in a lozenge of small tools and scrolling cornerpieces, each spine with two red morocco labels, densely gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With engraved frontispieces, one a portrait of Herbert, the other a view of Bemerton. Keynes, p. 60 (citing the 1846 printing). Spines faintly sunned (the gilt with a slight loss of brightness), extremities with a bit of rubbing (one spine top with very shallow loss part of the way across), mild marginal foxing to plates, other trivial imperfections, but still quite a pretty set in excellent condition, the text clean and smooth with generous margins, and the decorative bindings completely sound and with nothing approaching a fatal defect. This is a handsomely printed and bound set of the works of 17th century religious poet George Herbert (1593-1633). After serving for a period as a university functionary, Herbert experienced a call to the clergy and thereafter devoted himself to the religious life. In 1630, he received from Charles I the rectory at Bemerton (pictured here in the frontispiece to the second volume), and served there as a dedicated cleric for the remainder of his life. As an outgrowth of his rector's experience, Herbert wrote "The Priest to the Temple," a practical, wise, and often witty manual for the country parson (which occupies half of our first volume). Through this, and especially through his incandescent religious poetry, Herbert became, posthumously, one of the most influential religious figures of the 17th century. Published in 1633, his "The Temple" (occupying the main part of Volume II here) contains some 160 poems, nearly all the verse he wrote, and this work assured his place in the pantheon of early English poets, devotional or otherwise.       2 p.l., 35 pp. 8vo, modern wrappers. Paris: A. Aubry, 1853. A very rare sale catalogue. Huvé (1783-1852), was a leading architect of his time who was chosen to complete la Madeleine after its original architect, Vignon, died. At the height of his career, Huvé was president of the Société centrale des architectes, professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and a member of the Institut, having replaced Charles Percier. He was closely associated with many aristocratic families in France, including that of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, an employee at Huvé's firm. A staunch adherent of the neoclassical style, he designed hospitals, theaters and churches, many of which still exist to this day. The catalogue of 339 lots describes many of the classic architectural manuals as well as numerous books on the history and architecture of Greece and Rome. There are works on subjects such as hydraulic architecture, construction techniques, the design of monuments and public spaces, and interior decoration. Fine copy. ❧ N.B.G., Vol. 25, cols. 661-62.

        Kasteel Vaeshartelt - Muller + Lemercier, 1853.

VOGELVLUCHT GEZICHT OP KASTEEL VAESHARTELT?Plan g?n?ral des trois ch?teaux Vaesharteld?, lithografie in kleur vervaardigd na 1853 door Theodore M?ller, uitgegeven door Lemercier te parijs. Afm. (incl. tekst) ca. 46 x 60 cm. In lijst. Prijs: ?975,- (incl. lijst).
