THE NORTH AMERICAN SYLVA; OR A DESCRIPTION OF THE FOREST TREES OF THE UNITED STATES, CANADA, AND NOVA SCOTIA

Philadelphia, 1853. [with:] Nuttall, Thomas: THE NORTH AMERICAN SYLVA.... Philadelphia: Robert P. Smith, Publisher..., 1853. Three volumes. 121 handcolored lithographs. Uniform contemporary green morocco stamped in gilt (with botanical design on front and rear covers), spines gilt, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Front hinge of second volume of Michaux set cracked, extremities lightly rubbed. A few fox marks, mostly on text leaves, with the plates generally clean and brightly colored. Overall a very good set, in uniform contemporary bindings. In two cloth cases with separate chemises for each volume, leather labels. An early issue of Michaux and Nuttall's classic work of American natural history. Originally published as separate works, these titles merged into a regularly produced combined work of six volumes beginning in 1851. The Nuttall appears to have the same collation as the first edition of 1842-49. The Michaux has virtually the same collation as the 1850/51 and 1852 issues which precede it. The beautiful color plates were printed in Paris, many after Redouté. The Nuttall contains 121 plates, as in the first issue of 1842/46/49. The Michaux contains 156 color plates, as called for on the titlepage, six more plates than in previous issues. This publication is the most important work relating to American trees prior to the 20th century. It is the product of the efforts of two of the greatest naturalists to work in 19th-century America, François André Michaux and Thomas Nuttall. The beautifully executed plates illustrate leaves and nuts or berries of American trees across the entire continent. Sabin says of the work, "It is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind, and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty." Michaux's work is based on his extensive travels in the eastern half of America, and those of his father, from the 1790s on. Both men were friendly with Jefferson and other leading figures, who aided them in their work and travels. The plates were executed by the great French flower painter, Redouté, and his associate, Bessa. The sheets of the first effort at reprinting the work were destroyed by fire, but the copper plates were separately stored and thus survived to be employed in a later combined edition issued by Rice and Hart of Philadelphia Thomas Nuttall was one of the most intrepid American naturalists of his day, travelling extensively in the Mississippi Valley and the Far West in the 1820s and '30s to gather botanical specimens. His work, designed to supplement that of Michaux, covers eastern species overlooked by the Frenchman, and new species Nuttall had gathered in the Midwest and West. His work was first published in Philadelphia in 1842-49. The more up-to- date method of using colored lithographs for the plates was employed in the Nuttall volumes, since the publisher did not have engraved plates in stock, as was the case with the Michaux work. A handsome set, in the publisher's original binding, of a classic of American natural history.

Wilhelm Carl August Zimmer (1853-1937). Landschaft im Hopfgarten bei Weimar. Öl

      - Wilhelm Carl August Zimmer (1853 Apolda-Reichenberg (Dresden) 1937). Landschaft im Hopfgarten bei Weimar. 1875 .

Ricordi,, 1853. Riduzione per pianoforte solo di Luigi Truzzi. Oblong folio (247 × 333 mm). Contemporary quarter grey cloth, navy blue boards, spine ruled in gilt, and stamped red leather name label affixed to front cover. Title with vignette by Ratti of a scene from the opera; 21 separate issues, with continuous pagination at bottom right and individual pagination at top right; 140 pp. Engraved throughout. A little rubbed, some foxing throughout, more strongly front and back, but overall very good. First edition. Piano score for one of Verdi's most enduringly popular operas. The libretto was based on the play El trovador (1836) by Antonio García Gutiérrez, his most successful play, and one which Verdi scholar Julian Budden describes as "a high flown, sprawling melodrama flamboyantly defiant of the Aristotelian unities, packed with all manner of fantastic and bizarre incident" (The Operas of Verdi, p.59), which perhaps goes some way to explaining its appeal. The première took place at the Teatro Apollo in Rome on 19 January 1853, where it "began a victorious march throughout the operatic world" (p.66). Ink stamp to the title page of Giuseppe Pugioli, "Neg. di Musica e Piano Forti, Nella Gran Piazza, Alessandra". Pugioli travelled to Egypt as a cornetist for the 1871 première of Aïda under the baton of Giovanni Bottesini, a great friend of Verdi's. He stayed and became instructor of the military band of the Citadel in Cairo, and also composed the Egyptian national anthem, which is often miscredited to Verdi.

The Chinese Revolution, with Details of the Habits, Manners, and Customs of China and the Chinese.

George Routledge,, London: 1853 - An unusual yellowback edition of this work on the Taiping rebellion, 1850- 1864, the first instance of total war in China, which brought it a new religion and a new dynasty. Hundreds of cities were destroyed in this war; millions of lives were lost and the Qing dynasty required the help of the British and French in order to suppress the rebels. The rebellion was instigated by Hong Xiuquan and his followers, whose goal was to create a "Heavenly Kingdom" in China, with Christianity as the official religion, as well as social reforms such as shared property, equality for women, and the replacement of traditional Chinese religions. The yellowback features a red paper pictorial cover with illustration of the rebellion's leader within an ornate Chinese architectural frame. The price (one shilling) is printed across the roof line of the Chinese style structure framing the illustration. We have not found other examples of Charles MacFarlane's work in yellowback edition; this volume also unusual in that it differs from the usual light topic material in yellowback fiction.         The Chinese Revolution, with Details of the Habits, Manners, and Customs of China and the Chinese

London:: George Routledge,. 1853.. Hardcover. Good +. An unusual yellowback edition of this work on the Taiping rebellion, 1850- 1864, the first instance of total war in China, which brought it a new religion and a new dynasty. It is also quite timely, being written as the Taiping Rebellion was unfolding, and demonstrates the increased interest of the Victorian reading public in sophisticated but inexpensive reading material. 16mo, vii, 243 pp, ads [7], including advertisement at rear inside rear board, folding frontispiece map. Boards rubbed and worn, red paper spine missing, rear board with advertisement for "cheap editions of popular works". Inner hinges starting, but holding.         The Pantropheon

London: Simpkin, Marshall, & Co.,, 1853. Or, history of food and its preparation, from the earliest stages of the world. Octavo. Contemporary tan half calf; sides, edges and endpapers all comb-marbled, spine gilt in compartments separated by flat bands with double fillet borders either side enclosing handsome arabesques, titles gilt to second on green morocco ground. Title page in black and gold, steel-engraved portrait frontispiece and 41 similar plates after Volant of which 2 double-page. Contemporary ownership inscription to head of title page. Sides slightly rubbed, internally crisp and fresh, the plates in superb condition. Withal an excellent copy. First edition of this work celebrating the "gastronomic marvels of antiquity". French-born Soyer is remembered as the first ever celebrity chef. He travelled to England as a young man and found fame as head chef at the newly-established Reform Club in London. He wrote several books, was instrumental in the introduction of gas-cooking and was even sent to Ireland to build kitchens to alleviate the famine; he was also greatly admired by figures such as Thackeray, who used him as the model for Mirabolant in Pendennis. It is now known, however, that Pantropheon was not written by Soyer at all but is in fact the work of one Adolphe Duhart-Fauvet, "who sold it to Soyer to translate and complete. This he did, but published it under his own name without acknowledgement to the original author. Soyer was a generous man, but craved publicity and, at that time, money, so it seems likely that, as with the Magic Stove, he considered the additions he made justified him in claiming the work as his own" (ODNB).

A Visit to the Indian Archipelago, in H.M. Ship Maeander. With Portions of the Private Journal of Sir James Brooke.: With Illustrations by Oswald W. Brierley.

London Richard Bentley 1853 - Keppel was a strong supporter of James Brooke both in his actions against pirates and in his role in establishing the Government of Sarawak. His account of events and individuals covers an important period in the history of British Borneo. Its publication was warmly welcomed by the influential Journal of the Indian Archipelago published by J.R. Logan in Singapore: "Captain Keppel need make no apology for entering into the field of literature, the chapters containing accounts of his own movements are always interesting, and his casual notices are often of greater value than those made by persons of greater pretensions. We can sincerely recommend these volumes; they have afforded us some pleasant hours, and the faults we have noticed do not detract much from the interest. We trust to welcome Captain Keppel again in these seas; the times promise to be stirring, let him come with a good squadron, do good service and then write another amusing book." - from the review. A very good clean set in original cloth, gilt, head of spine repaired. First edition Two volumes, pp.xiv, 301; vii, 286, 8 tinted lithographed plates, folding map.

Första Resa fran Cairo till Arabiska Öknen i April 1845. Fragment.

Helsingfors (Helsinki), (S. Baranovskij for) J. Simelius, 1853. - 8vo. VII, (1), 126 pp., final blank f. With lithogr. map at the end of the volume; printed notes of a Bedouin melody within the text. Green half calf with contemp. marbled boards and giltstamped title to rebacked spine. First edition, published posthumously. - Extremely rare account of Wallin's principal journey through Arabia, unknown to most bibliographers: "It was not until two years after his death", writes Henze, "that the report of his first (and most important) journey (performed in 1845, a year before the appearance of the first volume of Carl Ritter's 'Arabia') was published". This refers to the English "Narrative of a Journey from Cairo to Medina and Mecca", which was printed in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1854. In fact, an extensive account of the first leg of this highly significant journey was first given to the world in December 1853, but little more than a year after the author's passing. Of this Swedish-language book, edited by Berndt Otto Schauman, less than two dozen copies are known worldwide, 12 of which are in Finnish libraries (the remainder distributed throughout Sweden [4 copies], Germany [2 copies], Denmark, France, and the U.S.A. [a single copy each]). In contrast with the later JRGS publication, the present work includes an appendix rendering Arabic terms and phrases that occur throughout the text in the original language and script. - Like his more famous contemporary J. L. Burckhardt, Wallin was fluent in Arabic and, in local costume, was capable of passing for a scholarly sheikh. Indeed, the two explorers are often compared: "I see many points of resemblance between them, the same iron constitution, the same versatility, the same indomitable energy, the same imperturbable temper" (H. C. Rawlinson, quoted in Henze). Financially backed by his alma mater, the University of Helsinki, Wallin departed for the Middle East in 1843 and set out on his expeditions from Cairo under the name of Abd al-Wali. "In 1845, proceeding southeast across the wastelands of the Nafud Desert, he reached Ha'il then continued by force of circumstances southward to Medina and Mecca. From there he returned to Egypt" (Howgego). More precisely, he "moved eastwards from Wadi al-Araba, first touching upon the upper regions of Wadi Sirhan, then on to the oasis of Djuf ('Algawf') and crossed the central regions of Shammar, via Djobbah ('Gubbi'), the Great Nefud ('Nufood'), and Hail [.] Of Shammar and its inhabitants he provided the fullest account, unsurpassed by later travellers in its scholarly precision" (Henze). After his return to Europe in 1850, Wallin was made Professor of oriental languages at Helsingfors. His notes provide a detailed overview of the political and religious movements and the role of the different tribes in Palestine and especially in Saudi Arabia. - Stamped ownership "L. L. Cygnaeus, Helsingfors" to flyleaf. A fine, largely unbrowned copy. K.-E. Henriksson (A Wallin Bibliography), in: Studia orientalia 17 (1952), p. 13-16, at p. 13. OCLC 551923531. Cf. Macro 2262. Howgego II (1800-50), W12, p. 627. Henze V, 452 (all citing only the 1854 JRGS publication). Cf. Fück 198 (mentioning the journey). Not in Gay or Ibrahim-Hilmy.         Autographed letter signed ("Charles Dickens").

Tavistock House (London), 10. VI. 1853. - 8vo. 2½ pp. on bifolium. To Mr. Breach, the proprietor of the Folkestone inn, where Dickens stayed for three days while travelling to Boulogne on Sunday, June 12th. Dickens mis-dated this letter as, according to another letter in the VanderPoel Dickens collection (A85) written from Folkestone dated Saturday the 11th, this letter, written on Thursday, would have been the 9th of June. In his letter Dickens asks the proprietor to have a "quiet and cheerful" room prepared for him and his family who plan on coming for the summer. Dickens was particularly fond of Boulogne as, the previous summer, he had completed two chapters of Bleak House while vacationing there. - Minor overall toning; brown spot to upper middle crease. Property from a Private Chicago-area Collection. Edgar Johnson, 756-759; The VanderPoel Dickens Collection, A85.
