Amerikanischer Circus.

English manuscript journal of a trip around the world by James Boughey Lingard-Monk, who went on this journey with his new wife Ellen Heburn. Including extensive entry's when visiting Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and North America. The entries contain personal and social information, general facts about the areas visited and also descriptions of the areas, customs etc. James Lingard-Monk (1853-1905) of Dunlewey (county Donegal, Ireland) was the son of the respectable magistrate Richard Boughey of Fullshaw Hall and appointed as High Sheriff of Donegal in 1901, as the British Crown's judicial representative. The journey starts in November 1894 when they depart on the SS Himalaya from London to Colombo (Sri Lanka). After that they visit Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and North America (including Monterey, San Francisco, Chicago and New York). Whether or not he intended to publish it, he certainly intended it to be read by others as the author mentions in the preface: "Perhaps there may be some person... who this diary may amuse, and perhaps not, no one can tell".In very good condition, with later manuscript index on endleaf..

THE AMERICAN FLORA, OR HISTORY OF PLANTS AND WILD FLOWERS: CONTAINING A SYSTEMATIC AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION, NATURAL HISTORY, CHEMICAL AND MEDICAL PROPERTIES OF OVER SIX THOUSAND PLANTS, ACCOMPANIED WITH A CIRCUMSTANTIAL DETAIL OF THE MEDICINAL EFFECTS, AND OF THE DISEASES IN WHICH THEY HAVE BEEN MOST SUCCESSFULLY EMPLOYED

New York, 1853. Quarto. Original red morocco, covers elaborately blocked in gilt, with title in covers, the flat spines decorated in gilt; expertly rebacked and cornered with original spines laid down. Very good. A set of this rare American flora with charming plates, including the very rare fourth volume. The collation for this work varies, as Stafleu notes, "The copies listed in The National Union Catalog show a great variation," but it is clear from an internal examination that two more plates are required in the first edition of the first volume, than in the second edition as here. Stafleu mentions a second edition and records the pagination correctly, but gives the incorrect number of plates, and the dates vary as well: 1855-1856-1855-1855, as opposed to the present example: 1853-1851-1852-1850. This edition of the first volume includes more text, but two less plates. The number of plates in the remaining volumes is the same in both editions, but the third and fourth volumes of the second edition each include four pages less text. The present set includes an 1853 issue of the first volume, which is complete with an uncolored portrait frontispiece, lithographic additional title, and forty- eight plates. The second volume includes a handcolored frontispiece, additional title, and forty-four plates; the third is complete with a handcolored portrait of Linnaeus, additional title, and forty-six plates; the fourth also has a handcolored frontispiece, additional title, and forty-four plates. Bennett writes: "The publisher clearly did not count pages of color plates when listing the numbers on the title pages, but counted every separate item on each page.

        Broadside. Begins: "A los venezolanos.

New-York Folio. [1] p.. 21 October 1853 In this address to his fellow Venezuelans, Paéz (1790?-1873), the exiled general and former president — who would serve as president yet again in the early 1860s— denies any part in revolutionary conspiracies against the regime of General José Gregorio Monagas (1798?-1858), then ruling Venezuela. Páez probably drew upon the pen of D. Antonio José de Irisarri (1786?-1868) for the composition of this publication. Handsomely printed on a single sheet, in two columns. Rare: We fail to trace this piece of exile writing via WorldCat, NUC Pre-1956, or Palau. In good/very good condition, save for short tears to margins. Good Venezuelan item.

4 (dav. ein eigenh.?) Briefe m. eigenh. Unterschrift.

Beirut, 1853-1858. BASIL: A STORY OF MODERN LIFE ...

New York: D. Appleton & Company, 200 Broadway,. 1853. original black cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold and blind, yellow endpapers.. Light wear to cloth at edges, some spotting to cloth on front and. rear covers, faint stain to upper right corners of front flyleaf and. several text pages, a very good copy overall. (#147331). First U.S. edition. Collins' second full-length novel and his first to be set in contemporary times. "With BASIL ..., his first characteristic novel, Collins began his search for a cosmic viewpoint that would encompass fate and chance, and the workings of human character with respect to both. He did not fulfill his objective until sixteen years later in THE MOONSTONE, but even in BASIL there is an oppressive feeling of foreordained events forever threatening, a feeling in which the weather is made to play a part. Although much of BASIL is weak, the symbolic thunderstorm during which Basil confronts Mannion and the visions seen by Basil in delirium have been praised. The text of BASIL usually read by modern readers is that of the 1862 revision, in which Collins dropped much of the quasi-supernatural background. This editing may simply have been an attempt to restore balance to the story by removing padding, but it is more likely to have been an early instance of Collins' uncertainty (evidenced again in the appendix to ARMADALE) of how far to go in attributing to Providence a series of coincidences otherwise inexplicable." - Bleiler (ed), Supernatural Fiction Writers: Fantasy and Horror, p. 234. Bleiler (1978), p. 47 Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). Hubin (1994), p. 180.

First Lady Jane Pierce writes her niece from her room in The White House, referencing the recent tragic death of her son that defined her entire period as First Lady, and its effect on the President "looking sad and oppressed with the sense of his own sorrow ?"

Washington, DC, November 10, 1853. 4.5" x 7". "Black-bordered Autograph Letter Signed ""J M Pierce"" as First Lady, 4 pages, 4.5"" x 7"", front and verso on two conjoined sheets. Washington, November 10, 1853. To her niece, Anne, daughter of President Pierce's brother John (1796-1824). Fine condition. Their third son, Benjamin (1841-1853), was killed in a train accident in January 1853 near Andover, Massachusetts, as he and his parents were on their way to Washington for the presidential inauguration, hence this letter is black-bordered. In part, ""I know it must be with you - and then how true, as you say, that every hour and moment, every circumstance and place, is suggestive of the past in connection with the precious one we have loved and lost - stricken, afflicted, bereaved, desolate we are indeed dear Anne - and how utterly empty seems the satisfaction of earth without the beloved ones who made a part of every one of them - Your uncle came into my room a few minutes since, looking sad and oppressed with the sense of his own sorrow and the blank in all things where before there was an object to be interested in ... ""I hear good accounts from sister Mary and her family - William getting well and Alfred very comfortable and gaining - I hope you will see her - before you leave New England) to me Andover is bitterly sad, and thoughts connected with it agonizing..."" Their 11-year-old son Benjamin had been killed in a train accident near Andover 10 months earlier. A transcript of Mrs. Pierce's letter can be read in the images accompanying this description. Ex-Walter R. Benjamin Autographs."

Selections from the Records of the Government of India. (Foreign Department.)

Calcutta: Thos. Jones, "Calcutta Gazette" Office,, 1853. Published by Authority. No. III. Papers relating to the Resignation of His Excellency General Sir Chas. J. Napier, G.C.B., Commander-in-Chief in India. Octavo. Original grey limp cloth, paper label on front cover. Spine and periphery of covers sunned, bump at head of spine (with concomitant light creasing of leaves), otherwise clean and in remarkably good condition. First and sole edition, most uncommon: Copac locates only three copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (Oxford, LSE, SOAS), OCLC adds three more worldwide (University College Cork, Minnesota, Wisconsin). It was published at the request of Lord Dalhousie, whose "controversy with [Napier] regarding certain new regulations affecting the grant to the Sepoys of compensation for dearness of provisions, led to the latter's resignation" (Buckland, Dictionary of Indian Biography, p. 106). This copy has an Indian association as it is inscribed at the head of the title page: "Col[one]l Maclean - Ardgour House". This would seem to be George Maclean (d. 1862?), one of the sons of Alexander Maclean, 13th Laird of Ardgour (Lochaber); he was a colonel in the Royal Artillery, who served as ADC to Sir Colin Campbell when the latter was Governor of Ceylon and subsequently married one of his daughters. The Gentleman's Magazine for July 1847 describes him as "serving in India". During their service together in India Napier had accompanied a column of East India Company troops under Sir Colin Campbell on the north-west frontier. In 1852 Campbell resigned his post, angered by the attacks against him by Dalhousie and the press; Napier wrote "My friend Colin Campbell has been driven from India".

NEWCOMES. MEMOIRS OF A MOST RESPECTABLE FAMILY. Eduted by Arthur Pend

1853. Paperback. Good. NEWCOMES. MEMOIRS OF A MOST RESPECTABLE FAMILY. Edited by Arthur Pendennis, Esq. London: Bradbury and Evans, October 1853-August 1855. First edition, in the original 23/24 monthly parts, as issued. A very good clean set, a few back strips skillfully mended. all the wrappers in first state, and all the advertisements except the prodigiously rare "Great Northern Railway" slip in part 10, which seems only to occur in a few copies--it was lacking in VanDuzer's. The advertisement insets in parts 4 and 9 are here of the single variety; some sets having, in part 4 for instance 2 slips instead of 1 relating to the Edinburgh Guardian. these slight variations from VanDuzen's collation (some of which he mentions) are of quite minor importance. (VanDuzer 147).

BASIL: A STORY OF MODERN LIFE ...

New York: D. Appleton & Company, 200 Broadway,. 1853. original black cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold and blind, fore and bottom edges rough trimmed, cream endpapers.. Previous owner's name penciled on several pages. Very small chip from. lower spine end at front joint, lower front corner tip worn, a near. fine copy with tight, clean interior and clean binding with bight. gold stamping on spine panel. (#130251). First U.S. 180.

BARGAINING FOR A HORSE Engraved from the original painting in possession of the New York Gallery of Fine Arts

New York, 1853. Small crease at bottom edge, else fine. Engraving by Charles Burt, after William Sidney Mount's famous painting of New England horse trading. This work is typical of Mount's style, capturing a scene from everyday rural American life. Standing outside a rickety stable, two men whittle sticks as they negotiate the price of a saddled horse, standing near a fence behind and to their left. Charles Burt was a Scottish-born engraver who emigrated to New York City, where he gained both experience and renown. This is among his better- known works. Though the line beneath the title attributes the date as 1851, the very small print at the bottom notes a copyright date of 1853, after the American Art Union had been dissolved. A lovely copy of this iconic image.

Alexandre Houssiaux, 1853. Fine. Alexandre Houssiaux 1853, 13x21,5cm, 20 tomes en 20 volumes reliés. - First impression of the works in Houssiaux which bought the bottom of the library Furne, in which the works were originally published, he completed the three new volumes (Theater, comical tales ...) that appear for the first time in the works. The edition will be reprinted in 1855. As always with these editions of the complete works, ours has, one is tempted to say "naturally" some notable features. Tome II : 7 figures Tome III : 7 figures. Tome IV : 6 figures. 1855 Tome V : 7 figures Tome VI : 8 figures Tome VII : 8 figures Tome VIII : 4 figures Tome IX : 6 figures. Tome X : 8 figures Tome XI : 8 figures Tome XII : 6 figures. 1855.

-- [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        BLEAK HOUSE

New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 329 & 331 Pearl Street, Franklin Square,. 1853. nineteenth-century three-quarter black leather and marbled boards.. Contemporary ownership stamp of George L. Trendwell at the bottom. edge of each title page and his signature in pencil at the top edge. of the front free endpaper of each volume. Mild rubbing to binding. extremities, frontispiece tissue guard foxed, a remarkably clean,. very good copy. A nice copy of a scarce edition. (#148187). First U.S. book edition, preceded by Harper's issue in parts. "Dickens was a significant figure in the development of the mystery novel ... In BLEAK HOUSE (1853), Dickens introduced the intrepid Inspector Bucket, a sort of nineteenth-century Columbo, who was the first fiction English police detective." - Pronzini and Muller, 1001 Midnights, p. 207. "The ponderousness of the Court of Chancery works to evil and terrifying ends, as numerous persons involved are ruined, go mad, and die because of its effects. The physical horrors of London slums are concrete phenomena that enhance the psychic and social horrors so pointedly unfolded in the story." - Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 2-30. "The court serves here as the oppressive house (castle, monastery, etc.) of Gothic romance -- labyrinth and minotaur in one -- that confines and confuses, then devours its victims. Dickens' innovation is to render the Gothic mood via a contemporary setting and mundane subject matter (what could be more mundane than the law?). The daunting, positively Russian, size of his cast of characters moves away from the claustrophobically small cast found in earlier Gothics, and this also echoes the labyrinthine complexity of the law. As England dominated the world in the nineteenth century, London dominated England, and Dickens, more than any other British author, showed the literary potential for the fantastic in such an ostensibly mundane setting (as Sue did for Paris and Lippard for Philadelphia), revealing the city as the new fairy-tale forest of mystery and danger." - Robert Eldridge. Haycraft-Queen cornerstone. Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p. 269. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 2-30. Podeschi A133.

PEN KNIFE SKETCHES; OR, CHIPS OF THE OLD BLOCK. A SERIES OF ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATED LETTERS, WRITTEN BY ONE OF CALIFORNIA'S PIONEER MINERS, AND DEDICATED TO THAT CLASS OF HER CITIZENS BY THE AUTHOR

Sacramento, 1853. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt. Modern bookplate on front pastedown. Light foxing and thumb-soiling to text, light vertical crease throughout. Very good. An important and rare piece of illustrated Californiana, comprised of witty text by Alonzo Delano, (a.k.a. "Old Block"), and wonderful illustrations by the masterful Charles Nahl. Delano was born in Auburn, New York, and was living in Illinois in 1849. He travelled overland to California where he mined in the diggings and operated a shop selling provisions in San Francisco, before settling down in Grass Valley as a banker and agent for Wells Fargo. His writings provide a comic, but also realistic, view of life during the Gold Rush. The great illustrations by Nahl, the "Cruikshank of California," depict scenes in San Francisco and at the gold mines. "Delano...began publishing his witty and delightful observations of California for the PACIFIC NEWS and the CALIFORNIA DAILY COURIER. Well received, they were gathered with other Delano writings into book form in 1853...The publishers enriched the volume with full-page wood engravings by Thomas Armstrong based on drawings by Charles Nahl. The portrait of the long-nosed Old Block on San Francisco's Long Wharf is a classic" - Kurutz. A rare work, accorded a "b" by Howes, and a basic document of the Gold Rush.

THE NORTH AMERICAN SYLVA; OR A DESCRIPTION OF THE FOREST TREES OF THE UNITED STATES, CANADA, AND NOVA SCOTIA

Philadelphia, 1853. [with:] Nuttall, Thomas: THE NORTH AMERICAN SYLVA.... Philadelphia: Robert P. Smith, Publisher..., 1853. Three volumes. 121 handcolored lithographs. Uniform contemporary green morocco stamped in gilt (with botanical design on front and rear covers), spines gilt, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Front hinge of second volume of Michaux set cracked, extremities lightly rubbed. A few fox marks, mostly on text leaves, with the plates generally clean and brightly colored. Overall a very good set, in uniform contemporary bindings. In two cloth cases with separate chemises for each volume, leather labels. An early issue of Michaux and Nuttall's classic work of American natural history. Originally published as separate works, these titles merged into a regularly produced combined work of six volumes beginning in 1851. The Nuttall appears to have the same collation as the first edition of 1842-49. The Michaux has virtually the same collation as the 1850/51 and 1852 issues which precede it. The beautiful color plates were printed in Paris, many after Redouté. The Nuttall contains 121 plates, as in the first issue of 1842/46/49. The Michaux contains 156 color plates, as called for on the titlepage, six more plates than in previous issues. This publication is the most important work relating to American trees prior to the 20th century. It is the product of the efforts of two of the greatest naturalists to work in 19th-century America, François André Michaux and Thomas Nuttall. The beautifully executed plates illustrate leaves and nuts or berries of American trees across the entire continent. Sabin says of the work, "It is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind, and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty." Michaux's work is based on his extensive travels in the eastern half of America, and those of his father, from the 1790s on. Both men were friendly with Jefferson and other leading figures, who aided them in their work and travels. The plates were executed by the great French flower painter, Redouté, and his associate, Bessa. The sheets of the first effort at reprinting the work were destroyed by fire, but the copper plates were separately stored and thus survived to be employed in a later combined edition issued by Rice and Hart of Philadelphia Thomas Nuttall was one of the most intrepid American naturalists of his day, travelling extensively in the Mississippi Valley and the Far West in the 1820s and '30s to gather botanical specimens. His work, designed to supplement that of Michaux, covers eastern species overlooked by the Frenchman, and new species Nuttall had gathered in the Midwest and West. His work was first published in Philadelphia in 1842-49. The more up-to- date method of using colored lithographs for the plates was employed in the Nuttall volumes, since the publisher did not have engraved plates in stock, as was the case with the Michaux work. A handsome set, in the publisher's original binding, of a classic of American natural history.
