[Presse / Second Empire].

Trial; Court Martial; Kentish Guards
1852. 1808 Court Martial of Rhode Island Militia Officers Who Refused to Select Six Guardsmen for Federal Service [Trial]. [Court Martial]. [Kentish Guards]. Trial of Colonel David Pinniger, Lt. Col. William P. Maxwell, Major Nathan Whiting, Captain Allen Tillinghast: Officers of the Kentish Guards, Before a General Court-Martial Holden at the Court-House, In Providence, April 27, 1808, For Disobedience of Orders and Neglect of Duty. Warren [RI]: Printed by Nathaniel & John F. Phillips, 1808. 41, [4] pp. Errata slip pasted to verso of p.41. Octavo (7-3/4"x 4-3/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet, fragments to wrapper along spine, untrimmed edges. Moderate toning, early owner signature to verso of final leaf. * Only edition. Formed in 1774, the Kentish Guards of Rhode Island boasted General Nathanael Greene as an original officer. The Guards distinguished themselves at the Siege of Boston and elsewhere. In 1807 Colonel David Pinniger refused an order to select six guardsmen for federal service, asserting that the Guards's charter permitted the call up of the entire unit, but not individual soldiers. Pinniger's refusal precipitated his court martial and that of the fellow officers who supported him. All were removed from office without further penalty. The guards elected replacement officers; no one went into the U.S. Army. This pamphlet was published by the officers after the "unfavorable result" of the court martial in order to protect their reputations. All aspects of the case are covered.
. Charles Dickens
Chapman & Hall, 1852. First one-volume edition of the five Christmas Books, with a new short preface by Dickens. Bound in rich dark blue half leather and hand-made marbled boards. Five raised bands with title, author, four floral devices, and publication date, all in gilt at bottom spine. Frontis illustration from wood engraving by John Leech. New end-papers and paste-downs. This volume is significant as the first authorized edition of these famous stories. In the preface, Dickens notes that "the narrow space within which it was necessary to confine these Christmas Stories when they were originally published rendered their construction a matter of some difficulty, and almost necessitated what is peculiar to their machinery . my purpose was a whimsical kind of masque, which the good humour of the season justified." Mild creasing and slight foxing/discoloration to the external pages. Some insignificant darkening to the outer edges of some pages. An historically important collection, justified as such by Dickens in the preface, and wonderful to own or to give as a gift. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Paris: Allouard et Kaeppelin, [1852]. First Edition. Contemporary half calf with marbled boards.. Very Good; some wear to the binding; frontispiece reinforced at gutter.. 8vo, [2], vi, [7] - 372 pp. + frontispiece. AN ADDITIONAL 44 pp. MANUSCRIPT WITH MOUNTED ILLUSTRATIONS OF GAMES APPENDED TO THE TEXT BY ALFRED JUMELLE. A superb association copy with an important narrative regarding chess and the social and artistic life at the Caf de la Regence. The manuscript annotations and 'appendage' are by an habitu of the Caf de la Regence - the chess players and social rendezvous during the 18th and 19th century at the Place du Palais-Royal and then, after 1852, at 161 rue Saint-Honor - Alfred Jumelle, the Parisian aesthete and accomplished chess player. He was a member of numerous societies (e.g., Soc. de Gographie, Union centrale des Beaux-Arts appliqus l'Industrie) and a frequent contributor to the journal La Stratgie and the Parisian press. The Caf de la Regence played host to the greats of the game and society (Marx and Engels played there). Diderot makes note of it in his Neveu de Rameau; it was frequently cited by Philodor and Jean Jacques Rousseau. The decade of the fifties and sixties were its high point. It saw such notables as the great Paul Morphy - recorded here (alas, NOT the great "Opera" game that Morphy played on Oct. 21, 1858 at the Salle Le Peletier during the performance of Norma). On the front endpaper of this book is Jumelle's opening remark: "Le comte de Basterot m'avait fait l'honneur de m'entretenir de [son] ouvrage plusieurs fois la Rgence ( … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

It is an important work historically and is mentioned many times by Richard Wolfe in his Marbled papers (indeed, the only other copy we have owned, or for that matter ever seen, went to Mr. Wolfe about ten years ago). He gives a summary of the contents on his page 28, and suggests that Fichtenberg was German or German-trained; further on (p. 46) he refers to this 'extremely fine and valuable 1852 treatise.' Fichtenberg deals with much more than just marbled papers; some of them were chemically made patterns. The varieties of marbled papers are described by Wolfe on his p. 114. One of the most elusive and most charming of the nineteenth marbled paper books." Robles
Barcina, La Habana, 1852. Very important book of the history of CUBA XIX century. Printed in Imprenta y papelería de Barcina, Havana, 1852. 332,[2]pp. plus lithographic frontispiece, twenty engraved plates, and numerous in-text woodcuts. In Spanish. Modern half morocco and marbled boards. Very good condition. One of the most important works of costumbrismo in Latin America, and the first collection of its kind in Cuba, with contributions from several notable Cuban writers, and illustrated by Victor Patricio de Landaluze. In the early 1800s a large number of authors and artists in Spain participated in the costumbrismo movement, an important precursor to later 19th-century realism that generally involved written or pictorial sketches of a particular country's or region's social "types," customs, and manners. By 1830 the movement had spread to Cuba, among both native authors and Spanish artists traveling abroad. In the latter category was Victor Patricio de Landaluze (1828-89), the illustrator of the present volume, who eventually settled in Cuba and founded the satirical newspaper, DON JUNÍPERO. LOS CUBANOS PINTADOS. features twenty of Landaluze's illustrations of Cuban types ("La coqueta," "El tabaquero," "El litigante," etc.), engraved on plates by Jose Robles, and includes numerous in-text woodcut illustrations by Robles. The chalk-style lithographic frontispiece view, presumably by Landaluze, depicts a crowd viewing "TIPOS CUBANOS" in a peepshow box at an outdoor gathering. A total of thirty-eight types are described in the volume, often in a combination of prose, dialog … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Manuscript.
1852. I'm quite excited about this journal. Not only because it has significant historical content - which it does - but also because it was kept by a real, for lack of a better term, "character." Though "wise guy," "odd ball" or "cracker-barrel philosopher" might be equally suitable descriptors for journal-keeper B.C. Townsend. Here's how he begins the second part of his journal: "... Anybody had told me 2 months ago that I would be so soon off on another voyage around Cape Horn I'd shoot em or bust. One don't know when ones taking comfort till one don't take it. Thems my sentiments. No more theaters, stewed oysters or mint juleps... B.C. Townsend Ship Severn. Alias Tub as she has proved herself on several occasions. Mar 7, 1852." According to Fairburn the "Severn" was a 573 ton merchant ship built just before the clipper era in Medford, Mass. She departed New York in November, 1851, bound for San Francisco. On December 27th Townsend makes what will pass as a typical observation for this portion of the voyage, "Crew employed as usual on rigging with plenty to do + poor me to do it." They endured a typically stormy passage around Cape Horn (accompanied by Townsend's wry observations), and by March they'd reached Tulcahuano. "Crew employed on rigging as the old tub slowly wends her way..." and by the end of May were in San Francisco. Then the fun begins, as Townsend wanders about the docks and the town - both well known to him - and reports on what he sees, naming old shipmates and former ships. He also reveals that the "Severn" was carrying a cargo of lumber and staves. A … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]
