NEW YORK AND THE WHITE MOUNTAINS; WITH A COMPLETE MAP, AND NUMEROUS WOOD-CUT VIEWS OF THE PRINCIPAL OBJECTS OF INTEREST UPON THE LINE [bound with two other titles].

Boston, MA: Bradbury & Guild, 1852 An early American railroad travel guide along the Connecticut River by railroad from Harlem to St. Johnsbury, a distance of 322 miles, made up of the following individual railroads: Harlem Railroad; New York and New Haven Railroad; New Haven, Hartford, and Springfield Railroad, Connecticut River Railroad, Vermont and Massachusetts Railroad, Vermont Valley Railroad, Sullivan Railrod; Vermont Central Railroad; and the Passaumpsic Railroad. "Throughout the entire length of this line there are scarcely a dozen miles without some object of interest to an intelligent traveller. 80 pages illustrated with woodcuts plus a seven foot long folded map of the entire route along the river. Title page has long shallow chip along gutter caused, I suspect, during production. The map is near fine showing only a little toning. This title is bound together with two others; "The Philosophy of Electrical Psychology: in a Course of Twelve Lectures," by John Bovee Dods (1851) and "A Month at Constantinople," by Albert Smith (1851). This was probably done by the publisher for odd titles remaining in stock and sold at a discount, a common practice back in the day. Bound in original half red leather over marbled paper covered boards with raised bands. Endpapers and several of the initial and final pages are foxed, though there are several minor spots of foxing throughout. Bookplate of George D. Kilborn on front paste-down endpaper. A very good plus, handsome copy.. First Edition. Hardcover. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

A complete set of the entire run of monthly issues from July 1852-December 1858, bound in 13 mostly half calf or full leather volumes. Octavos. Illustrated with wood-engravings. William Cullen Bryant, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edgar Allan Poe, and many other important contemporary American literary figures are featured in its pages. Among the articles on religion are many that focus on New England transcendentalism and mystical Christianity, and the travel articles most often feature exotic places and peoples in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Asia, including arctic explorations. The magazine serialized many articles over several months. These include: "Birds; or, Recreations in Ornithology" illustrated with especially fine wood-engravings, and two other illustrated geographical surveys: "Lakes & Legends of Central New York," and "The Valley of the Naugatuck" (the Naugatuck River Valley of Western Connecticut). Most boards are worn and scuffed, with four volumes in full leather lacking part or all of the spine backs, else overall a good only, scarce complete set. .

        Fisiología del Gusto

1852. First Edition . BRILLAT-SAVARIN, Jean Anthelme. Fisiología del Gusto. Mexico City: Juan R. Navarro, 1852. Large octavo, contemporary half black morocco, raised bands, patterned cloth boards, marbled endpapers. $4200.First edition in Spanish—and the first translation in any language—of “the most famous book in gastronomy,” with engraved portrait of the author and in-text wood-engraved headpieces and illustrations after those in the 1826 French first edition.""One of the most witty discussions on food ever writtenÂ… The work is filled with entertaining anecdotes and commentary on good eating, including several pages of impressions about the United States"" (Feret, 38). Brillat-Savarin fled to the United States after the Revolution, only to return to France in 1797 and secure an appointment to the Supreme Court of Appeal. While he held that post until he died, his greatest passions were exercised in his leisure time. Brillat-Savarin wrote extensive treatises on art, culture, science, and, of course, gastronomy. His appreciation for restaurants was virtually unparalleled and he was known for throwing elaborate dinner parties at his home in Paris. He was known for his tuna omelette, stuffed pheasant garnished with oranges, and fillet of beef with truffles. In 1825, just two months before his death, this work was published. It made him the most famous gastronomist of the day and he became known as the ultimate authority on food and dining. The initial 500 copies of the French first edition immediately sold out and the book has never been out of print since then. Includes histories of cooking, gourmands, coffee and chocolate, international specialties, a study of obesity, and more. Text in Spanish. This Mexican Spanish-language edition precedes the first American edition, issued in 1854, as well as the first Spanish edition, which did not appear until 1869. Cagle 1199. Gernon, Une Affaire de Goût 138. Bookbinder label on front pastedown.Discoloration to blank verso of frontispiece; bit of scuffing to spine ends. An extremely good copy, scarce.

Large 4to, 35 x 26 cm. 206 plates (114 litho plates (vol I has the usual unnumbered plate following pl 76) and 96 plates. 6 plates printed in full colors and 46 printed in tints), and numerous drawings and plans to scale. HITCHCOCK 1192. KARPEL B238. "According to George Tatum, `Of the architectural books published in Philadelphia during the nineteenth century, none was of more importance or had greater influence than those of Sloan.' The plates are among the best examples of American lithography." Sloan's first book. This was one of the most important and influential of all the design books published in the mid 19th century. The plates, printed by P. S. Duval, are among the best examples of American lithography (see Wainwright, Philadelphia in the romantic age of lithography, p. 69, 73). The designs are a veritable treasure trove of mid 19th century eclecticism: Norman, Italian, Elizabethan, Gothic and Oriental villas; English Gothic cottages, Italianate town houses, board and batten cottages and all manner of small ornamental buildings. Scattered, intermittent foxing, mostly marginal, moderate extremity rubbing, two black leather spine labels printed in gilt, chip with loss to Vol.II leather spine label, plus front cover gilt lettered spine labels of "S, Emlen Sharples.

Uncle Tom's Cabin; Or, Life Among the Lowly

Boston and Cleveland: John P. Jewett and Jewett, Proctor & Worthington, 1852. First edition, first issue of the author's classic work. Octavo, original cloth, volume with title vignettes and six wood-engravings. First issue, with "spilt" (rather than "spiled") in Volume I, 42, line 1; "cathecism" (rather than "catechism") in Volume II, 74, line 5; and all other first issue points. In near fine condition, early 20th century ink ownership signatures at head of title-pages and front free endpapers. Housed in a full custom morocco clamshell and chemise. A superior example. In the emotion-charged atmosphere of mid-19th century America Uncle Tom's Cabin exploded like a bombshell. To those engaged in fighting slavery it appeared as an indictment of all the evils inherent in the system they opposed; to the pro-slavery forces it was a slanderous attack on 'the Southern way of life'... the social impact of [the novel] on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since" (PMM 332). "Within a decade after its publication Uncle Tom's Cabin had become the most popular novel ever written by an American... there is substantial evidence that the book precipitated the American Civil War" (Downs, Books That Changed America, 108).

The 1830 title with its fluid but restrained calligraphic swirls framing stiff gothic lettering contrasts with the inserted leaf from 1852 which follows it, containing a variety of shaded capitals, exuberant decorative display letters, and two calligraphic figures of putti. 15 of Cominotti's 16 engraved samples are of cursive script; the last shows an alphabet in three sets of decorative capitals including one of ornamented gothic. On the back of the 1852 wrapper is a list of 19 publications of the brothers Vignozzi, all works of instruction, many for children or youth, in literature, Italian language and grammar, French, geography, arithmetic, history, and religion. Cominotti seems to have been one of the Vignozzi house engravers and graphic artists: ICCU lists two maps by him, and an 1827 Metodo per imparare a scrivere in sette lezioni, all published by the Vignozzi. Not found in the standard calligraphy bibliographies; OCLC locates a single copy of the 1830 issue, at the Newberry Library.

Full crimson morocco gilt by Stevens & Haynes, a.e.g., marbled endpapers. Fine. Cruikshank, George. First Cruikshank edition. With 27 illustrations on wood by George Cruikshank, including the frontispiece portrait of Stowe. [xxiv], 391, [1 ad] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Immensely best-selling in England and America. BAL identifies one edition (BAL 19518) - not illustrated - which precedes this edition by a few weeks, but the Cassell edition, being by far the more desirable, has traditionally been called the English first "In the emotion-charged atmosphere of mid-ninteenth-century America Uncle Tom's Cabin exploded like a bombshell. To those engaged in fighting slavery it appeared as an indictment of all the evils inherent in the system they opposed; to the pro-slavery forces it was a slanderous attack on 'the Southern way of life.' Whatever its weakness as a literary work - structural looseness and excess of sentiment among them - the social impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin on the United States was greater than of any book before or since" (PMM).         Autograph letter from architect Andrew Jackson Downing to Philadelphia wallpaper company re: decorating his Home in Newburgh, NY

Newburgh on the Hudson, NY, 1852. Very good condition. Downing's letter, written about 2 months before his tragic death, is addressed to Howell & Brothers the makers of the first machine printed wallpapers in America. A leading American advocate of the Gothic Revival, Downing designed his own cottage home, Highland Gardens in Newburgh, NY. In this 1852 letter to Howell & Brothers, Philadelphia wallpaper manufacturers, he discusses the decoration of his own home: "You will remember my calling at your store some three weeks ago & bringing away some samples of paper hangings. I wish to paper a large drawing-room in my own country house here with paper of the enclosed pattern [not present here]. Please send me enough of this for a room 20 x 24 ft and 12 1/2 feet high..." As to settling his bill, Downing directs Howell & Brothers to "Robert Buist, seedsman" of Philadelphia. Buist was an important nurseryman, credited with introducing the poinsettia to the United States. Andrew Jackson Downing (1815 - 1852) was an American nurseryman, landscape designer, architectural pattern book writer, and leading He is considered the founder of American landscape architecture. In the present letter, Downing writes as an architect: "As I am an architect practicing [indistinct] on the Hudson & in New York, I can sometimes send you orders for papers". Downing's growing interest in architecture lead him to establish an office at Highland Gardens with architect Calvert Vaux (1824 - 1895) in 1850. This 1852 letter from late in the career of Andrew Jackson Downing provides valuable insights into the decoration of his own home (regrettably demolished in 1963) and to his new career as an architect. He was tragically killed in the explosion of the Hudson River steamer, "Henry Clay" some two months after this letter was written. Small 8vo, [3]pp ALS. Clean, contemporary folds, 7 1/2 x 5"
