(French Sand-Operated Automaton)

(Paris, c. 1850). Cased stipple-engraved picture, hand-colored, with cut-out figures. Image is circular and measures seven inches in diameter, within a frame that measures 12 by 14 by 3 inches. The picture shows a boy playing the pipe and drums, while activating a pair of dancing dolls on a plank of wood with his foot. This tableau is set by the wall of a dwelling, and three children look on, one of whom leans out the window of the dwelling. Turning the piece around feeds the fine sand into the mechanism, causing the boy to bang his drum and tap his right foot, both of which are hinged. This is accomplished via a system of wheels and levers. A printed label on the glass-covered mechanism reads “Tableaux Mecaniques Circulaire Brevete” and contains brief operating instructions in French. Several old repairs to black frame, which is worn at corners, crack to glass covering mechanism, few small areas of color rubbed in image.

VOICES FROM THE PRESS; A COLLECTION OF SKETCHES, ESSAYS, AND POEMS, BY PRACTICAL PRINTERS

Charles B. Norton, New York 1850 - An anthology containing pieces by Bayard Taylor, Horace Greeley, and "The Tomb Blossoms," a short story by Walt Whitman. More importantly, this book contains a two-page biography of Whitman, the first biographical article ever written about him. Whitman worked as a printer for Brenton, and the article discusses his printing career. The book lacks both endpapers though there is a blank at the rear and there seems to be one endpaper mostly adhered to the front pastedown. In any event the book opens to the title page which is partly marred by an old waterstain, not too heavy, which decreases in both darkness and size the further one goes into the text. Most of the text is fairly clean and quite bright. The original cloth, which has a gilt portrait of Ben Franklin on the front cover, has fraying at the spine tips and along the spine edges, mostly the front edge. Naval Tactics and Trials of Sailing

London,: Charles Wilson (at the Navigation Warehouse and Naval Academy), 1850.. Quarto, with seven plates (five folding), and many illustrations in the text, many highlighted in red and blue; occasional light spotting, one plate browned; good in slightly rubbed original green cloth, gilt. First edition of this important study of naval tactics by the experienced mariner George Biddlecombe, RN. In this work Biddlecombe provides a substantial and detailed review of British naval tactics at mid-century, and his work was much studied at the time (although it came to be criticized for its overly cautious and mechanistic approach). For several years Biddlecombe served as master of the St Vincent, which bore Admiral Sir Charles Napier's flag from 1847 to 1849, and it is this 120-gun vessel that is depicted under sail as the frontispiece. By the time he wrote this work Biddlecombe was safely ensconced as the master of Her Majesty's Yacht Victoria and Albert, but few officers had seen more active service in their career. He served on the famous HMS Blonde and was part of the rescue of HMS Challenger off the coast of Chile in June 1835 (so ably described by another participant, FitzRoy of the Beagle). In his later career he reconnoitred many parts of the Baltic, and was influential in the region until he took up the position of assistant master attendant at Keyham yard, Devonport, in 1855, being promoted to master attendant of Woolwich yard in 1864. He was knighted by the queen at Windsor on 26 June 1873 and received a Greenwich Hospital pension soon afterwards. This work is not commonly seen, especially in such handsome condition. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Robert T. Tempest of York.

A second edition was published in 1858. Both are scarce. This work is attributed to Galvan Rivera in some sources, but he was actually the publisher. The actual author was Rodriguez de San Miguel. OCLC locates 11 copies of the 1850 edition in North American law schools. Clagett and Valderrama, A Revised Legal Guide to the Law and Legal Literature of Mexico 136.

        [Letter on Public Executions]

1850. In: The Tioga Banner. Wellsboro Penn., January 8, 1850. One broadsheet (35" x 22") folded to make four pages. On November 13, 1849, Charles Dickens (with his friend, the illustrator John Leech) witnessed in Horsemonger's Lane, London, the public hanging of George Manning and his wife Maria (for the murder of her former lover). Dickens was disgusted not by the executions themselves, but by the fact that they were public -- it is estimated that the hangings were witnessed by about 30,000. Later that very day Dickens wrote a letter to the editor of The Times, and it appeared the next day...~In it he expressed his shock at the behavior of the crowd at the hangings, going on to ask that public executions be abolished.~... When I came upon the scene at midnight, the shrillness of the cries and howls... made my blood run cold. As the night went on, screeching, and laughing, and yelling in strong chorus of parodies on Negro melodies, with substitutions of "Mrs. Manning" for "Susannah," and the like, were added to these. When the day dawned, thieves, low prostitutes, ruffians and vagabonds of every kind, flocked onto the ground, with every variety of offensive and foul behavior... When the two miserable creatures who attracted all this ghastly sight about them were turned quivering into the air, there was no more emotion, no more pity, no more thought that two immortal souls had gone to judgment... than if the name of Christ had never been heard in this world...~This letter by Dickens prompted editorials by The Times and responses by other readers over the following week -- which in turn prompted a second letter from Dickens. For the rest of his life Dickens kept arguing against public executions; it was not until 1868 that a law was passed abolishing them, and they finally ceased in 1869, the year before Dickens died.~What we have here is an unusual American printing of the first Dickens letter to The Times. A resident of Blossburg in north-central Pennsylvania, signing only as "Yours for Humanity, Anti-Gallows," has written a letter, dated December 28, 1849 (six weeks after the hangings) to The Tioga Banner of nearby Wellsboro, in which he or she says, ~A few months ago a man and wife by name of Manning were executed in England. A more barbarous exhibition never came to my knowledge than the scene on that occasion, as described by Charles Dickens. I send you Mr. Dickens' letter, and request you to publish it.~... after which Dickens's letter is indeed printed in full. We do not know how many other American newspapers might have reprinted either of Dickens's letters on this subject, but it is quite likely that this is the only extant copy of this issue of The Tioga Banner outside of perhaps a local historical society. Condition is very good, hinged at the fold with archival paper that does not impinge upon print. The text of Dickens's two letters may be found in the Pilgrim Edition of his Letters, Vol V pages 644-645 and pages 651-654; not noted by Podeschi (Yale) nor by vanderPoel (Texas).

Showing the Sections, and Fractional Sections, on all Navigable Streams, the Military Land District, in which are located all those forfeited lands, which are now subject to donation to actual settlers ... The whole carefully constructed from the United States surveys, and other reliable sources of information

Little Rock, AR [engraved by Edwin O. Reed, Cincinnati]: 1850. Engraved folding pocket map, full period hand colouring, printed on two sheets joined, 33 x 35 1/2 inches. Table of references along the right side, printed attestation by the Surveyor of Public Lands in Arkansas at the lower left. Folds into publisher's green cloth portfolio, covers decoratively stamped in blind, upper cover titled in gilt, silk ties, marbled pastedown. The very rare first issue of the finest of all 19th- century maps of Arkansas, here in superb original condition. This large and colourful map of Arkansas is copyrighted 1849 and is dated in the cartouche 1850. Rumsey, whose famed collection contains only an 1859 Colton re-issue of Langtree's map, writes: "It is the largest scale pre Civil War state map of Arkansas that we have seen, and it is highly detailed in its showing of lands owned by the U.S., the state, private grants, Seminary lands, and Salt Spring lands. It is not listed in any of the standard references." The map depicts the state divided into 51 counties, with each plotted for settlement; the impressive detail includes towns, roads, post offices, prairies, swamps, lead mines, sulphur springs and more. OCLC records only a handful of copies of the aforementioned 1859 Colton re-issue and no other copies published prior to the Civil War (a later edition being published in 1866). The only other extant copy of this map appears to be in the National Archives (Special List 29, item 71, RG 77: MD 50). Rumsey 4804 (1859 Colton re-issue). Not in Phillips.

        NIGHT BIVOUAC IN NEW GRENADA

[New Grenada (i.e. Colombia). January/February 1850].. Pen-and-ink and watercolor on an octagonal sheet of wove paper. Sheet size: 12 ¾ x 18 1/2 inches. Corners clipped, else very good. Provenance: Sotheby's, May 29, 1958, lot 377. Wonderful mid-19th-century watercolor of a night scene in the jungle of New Grenada. Fane, from a prosperous Lincolnshire family, joined the Army and served in the West Indies and in Canada in the late 1840s. In January 1850 he left Antigua for a sojourn in New Grenada, arriving on January 19 of that year. Fane's diary, located in the National Archives, United Kingdom, records the circumstances surrounding this scene: on January 24 he "Started an expedition to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta with two Indian guides," and the following day "hired donkeys and engaged an interpreter." The present watercolor shows Fane at rest in a hammock, whilst the interpreter and one of the Indians cut wood, and the other Indian tends the fire. Fane reached the "Perpetual Snow" on February 13, arrived back in Santa Martha on February 22 and arrived at Cartagena on February 29. He returned to Antigua via Jamaica the second week in March of that year. In 1857, Fane would raise a regiment to fight in the Indian Mutiny and would become a noted diarist and watercolorist. For the above quoted diary: National Archives, U.K., RECORDS OF THE FANE FAMILY, 1 Fane 6/8/1/3.

        Hog Hunting. The Tired Pig

London: Published by Messr. Fores, 41 Piccadilly, [circa 1850]. Colour- printed aquatint, finished by hand, by Messrs. Fores. Sheet size: 27 7/8 x 36 1/4 inches. An extremely rare aquatint depicting hog hunting in India. During the nineteenth century, field sports, particularly the hunting of wild game, were a common colonial leisure activity in India and Africa. Big-game hunting was considered the most thrilling and dangerous pursuit but hog hunting was also a favorite pastime for sporting Englishmen in the colonies. This superb image depicts an exciting hog hunt in India. A group of young Englishmen, all identified by name in the title space, are eagerly involved in chasing a wild boar across a grassy plain. This is one of a series of four large aquatint plates after Captain Platt, all with the general title 'Hog Hunting'. They were also issued separately (as here) and are all extremely rare and not often seen on the market. This is one of the finest images of English sportsmen in India. "John Platt, b. 1802, son of the Reverend Alexander Platt, was a Captin of the Native Infantry in India at the time he painted this set of Hog HUnting. He served in India from the age of eighteen, took part in the China War [First Opium War] in 1842 and was promoted Lt. Col. in 1853. His record shos him to have been a coldier of action with several decorations. He died on 1st July 1857, tragicallly murdered by mutineers from his own regiment." Snelgrove, British Sporting and Animal Prints. Snelgrove, p. 130; Silterzer p. 335; Schwerdt III p. 122.
