Autograph Letter Signed to M. Cap re publication of articles

Paris, 1850. Bernard, Claude (1813-73). A.L.s. to M. Cap, dated 25 fevrier 1850. 1-1/2pp. plus integral address leaf. 212 x 136 mm. Creased where previously folded, minor foxing & soiling, but very good. Regarding the submission of an article to an unnamed journal, presumably edited by M. Cap: "I have sent the medical review article for the next number to the printers. I must leave today for 8 or 10 days to go see my mother, who is very ill. I will thus not be able to correct the proofs. I ask you to give them a glance during my absence. . . ." Bernard also asked his correspondent to send him current issues of the Revue medicale, the Revue medico-chirurgicale and the "Journal des conn[aissances] medico-chirurgicales," so that he might recast the medical review article into a different form, "which I believe will be very profitable for your journal." We have not been able to discover which article Bernard is referring to here.

"Vot you say! Been here all day long and not catched anything. Ah! You should have been here last Wednesday. There was a chap caught an uncommon lot then to be sure."

n.p. c. 1850 n.p., [c. 1850]. Image approx. 8 x 10 inches; matted and framed to 14-3/4 x 16-3/4 inches overall. Pen and ink and watercolor on paper, initialled "JL", and captioned by the artist, as above. . John Leech (1817-1864) was one of the most prolific and successful of the English artists and caricaturists of the mid 19th century. "His humour was like his talent, gentle, warm-hearted and positive, his world, the ups and downs of middle class life, the sports of the squirearchy, and the peccadilloes of army officers and undergraduates" (Houfe). The conventions of social humor he established with his first contributions to the newly founded Punch, in 1841, lasted into the 1920s, but his greatest fame came through his book illustrations, particularly those for Surtees's sporting novels. "Extravagantly praised by Ruskin, Leech's often careless but never crude drawings have survived in charm and humour to give us a refreshing glimpse of mid-Victorian society." (Houfe)

Report of the Committee appointed to examine the life-boat models submitted to compete for the premium offered by His Grace the Duke of Northumberland: to which is added, a list of the existing life-boat, rocket, and mortar stations, and an abstract of the wrecks which occurred on the shores of the British Isles in 1850. With Appendix, maps, and plans.

London: Printed by W. Clowes..., l851.. FIRST EDITION. Folio, pp. [6], 77 (imprint on verso), frontis. hand-coloured map, 13 fldg. plates with colouring, fldg. hand-coloured chart at the end 'Wreck chart of the British Isles for 1850,' orig. blue cloth, upper cover lettered gilt and with coat-of-arms, sl. creasing and dust marks at blank fore-margin of fldg. plans, binding sl. dull. [With a leaf preceding the frontispiece 'Presented by the Duke of Northumberland.' The report is signed by John Washington, Captain R.N., and others. The report was in response to the loss of life caused by shipwrecks. The report concludes near the end : 'The path then is clear and distinct. The first step is to ensure a safe and powerful life-boat, and this the Committee feel confident has been accomplished; the next is to build a sufficient number of such boats, place them where required, organize and train the crews, and provide for their supervision and maintenance; - in fact, to do for the rest of the United Kingdom what your Grace has liberally undertaken to do for the coast of Northumberland, namely, to place a well-built life-boat at each of the most exposed points of the coast, and rockets or mortars at all the intermediate stations. There need be no misgiving for want of funds; no work of real benevolence in this country, when undertaken in the right spirit, was ever allowed to languish for lack of means...' "The Royal Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck (RNIPLS) was founded in March 1824. The RNIPLS provided lifeboats to local committees, the Coastguard and harbour authorities. The Duke of Northumberland financed a competition for a standard design of a lifeboat. The winner was William Plenty, of Newbury, Berkshire. These "pulling boats" (rowing) were between 18 and 26 feet in length and were powered by between 4 and 10 oars. They had cork in their hull and shaped air-cases fore and aft. Their double-ended designs could operate a rudder from either end, so there was no need to turn. The RNIPLS suffered from lack of funds and poor organization. Following the loss of the RNIPLS lifeboat Providence and 20 of her crew of 24 in the mouth of the river Tyne in December 1849, the need for reorganisation was recognised. Algernon Percy, 4th Duke of Northumberland, then First Lord of the Admiralty, took control. Richard Lewis was appointed secretary. The RNIPLS was replaced by the RNLI. Plenty's design was retired and a new design was introduced. These were larger, self-righting boats. They had a narrow beam, were 34 or 35 feet long with higher end-boxes containing the air-cases and were tested to self-right when capsized." Wikipaedia.

Plate 13 Antrostromus serico-caudatus, Cassin (Chuck-will's Widow) From The Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences

Philadelphia: The Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, 1850. first edition Fine with original hand-coloring A Fine original hand-colored lithograph. Folio (9.25 x 13 inches, 235 x 330 mm). The Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia was established by the learned naturalists of high Philadelphian society in early 19th century America to document the recent natural discoveries of a new nation. The founding members, and contributors, were the luminaries of early American natural history and sciences; Titian Peale, Thomas Say and George Ord, to name a few. The Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences was their clarion, and was illustrated with wonderful folio-sized hand-colored lithographs by J.T. Bowen and Co. in Philadelphia, America's premier lithographers of the mid-19th century, and the very same company to produce John James Audubon's landmark lithographs for the first seven Royal Octavo editions of the Birds of America (c. 1840-65) and both the Imperial Folio and Royal Octavo editions of the Quadrupeds of North America. (c.1840-54). In essence, the same artists and printers who produced Audubon masterful lithographs created this work. We classify these fabulous plates as one of the best unsung values in the art of 19th century ornithology.

[Antigua] Original watercolour drawing, inscribed 'Birds eye view / of the English Harbour / & the Ridge Antigua / taken from /[Great Fort George] Monks Hill / Antigua / April 11th / 1850"

Antigua, West Indies: 1850 [watermark date 1847]. Watercolour on paper, inscribed lower left and lower right. Sheet size: 9 7/8 x 13 7/8 inches. Excellent panoramic view from the Monks' Hill Fort looking south east down across Falmouth Harbour, English Harbour and out across the Caribbean. According to William R. O'Byrne's A naval biographical dictionary (London: 1849) Vol. 1, p.70, Bellairs joined the Navy in 1809 and made Lieutenant in 1819. From 1842 he served as Admiralty Agent on board a 'contract Mail steam-vessel'. He evidently travelled widely: the National Maritime Museum in London holds two of his West Indian drawings, the National Library of Australia a watercolour of a scene in Panama, and a collection of his drawings of the Far East were sold in 1982.As the present drawing shows he was clearly gifted, and more than a match for many of the professional artists working at the time. His 'professional' status received contemporary confirmation when his watercolour 'View of the town of St. Thomas, in the West Indies' was drawn on stone by W.L. Walton, lithographed and hand-coloured by Charles Hullmandel, and published as a separate print in 1843 (a copy of this print is held in the New York Pblic Library collection, and is described by Deak). All large quarto, half calf gilt in period style, very good copies, London, [Royal Society], 1850 - 1878. James Prescott Joule FRS (1818 - 1889). Joule studied the nature of heat, and discovered its relationship to mechanical work. This led to the theory of conservation of energy, which led to the development of the first law of thermodynamics. The SI derived unit of energy, the joule, is named after him. He worked with Lord Kelvin to develop the absolute scale of temperature, made observations on magnetostriction, and found the relationship between the current through resistance and the heat dissipated, now called Joule's law.

        Hog Hunting. The Tired Pig

London: Published by Messr. Fores, 41 Piccadilly, [circa 1850]. Colour- printed aquatint, finished by hand, by Messrs. Fores. Sheet size: 27 7/8 x 36 1/4 inches. An extremely rare aquatint depicting hog hunting in India. During the nineteenth century, field sports, particularly the hunting of wild game, were a common colonial leisure activity in India and Africa. Big-game hunting was considered the most thrilling and dangerous pursuit but hog hunting was also a favorite pastime for sporting Englishmen in the colonies. This superb image depicts an exciting hog hunt in India. A group of young Englishmen, all identified by name in the title space, are eagerly involved in chasing a wild boar across a grassy plain. This is one of a series of four large aquatint plates after Captain Platt, all with the general title 'Hog Hunting'. They were also issued separately (as here) and are all extremely rare and not often seen on the market. This is one of the finest images of English sportsmen in India. "John Platt, b. 1802, son of the Reverend Alexander Platt, was a Captin of the Native Infantry in India at the time he painted this set of Hog HUnting. He served in India from the age of eighteen, took part in the China War [First Opium War] in 1842 and was promoted Lt. Col. in 1853. His record shos him to have been a coldier of action with several decorations. He died on 1st July 1857, tragicallly murdered by mutineers from his own regiment."         The Scarlet Letter

Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1850. One of 2,500 copies published of this true first edition, on 16 March 1850, according to C.E. Frazier Clark Jr.'s definitive "Nathaniel Hawthorne - A Descriptive Bibliography". Number A16.1 in Clark's bibliography and number 7600 in BAL. This copy is in the following states and sub-states, again as described by Clark: Binding: in the style of Ticknor format A. Brown bold-ribbed T cloth with blind-stamped floral device inside ruled panels on both covers. Spine gold-stamped. Cream-colored wove endpapers. The contents are listed on pp. iii-iv and there is no preface. This is a key indicator of the first edition versus the second edition, which includes a preface. The other variants between the first and second editions are also present. These consist of sixty-nine typographical and spelling errors and punctuation changes throughout the text. For example, on page 21 line 20 "reduplicate" appears instead of "repudiate." Two of these variants (pg 31 line 20 and pg 132 line 29) are not as listed but these appear to be errors in Clark's list. Page 321 is in State x1 - line 10 has presence of work-up. Page iii is in State a2 - the "N" is beneath the "r" in "according" and the "1" of "192" is out of position. Four pages of ads were inserted between the front endpapers in most copies. This copy does not have any ads. It is unclear if they were lost or if this is one of the copies that never had ads. The text block is complete, although the stitching has loosened. The leaves are clean and unmarked except for a previous owner's name, dated 1850, on the front pastedown. The boards are in good condition, with some wear at the corners. The spine is in tatters, however, with some pieces missing. It is held to the boards with transparent tape.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Richmond Hill, Grenada. Original signed pencil and wash drawing, titled in pencil 'Richmond Hill Grenada July 1850'

Grenada, West Indies: 1850. Pencil and wash on paper, signed in ink lower right 'W.T. Bellairs R.N.', inscribed in pencil at top of image. Sheet size: 7 x 10 3/4 inches. An important view from the harbour of St. George's, Grenada, looking inland with the peak of Richmond Hill framed against the skyline According to William R. O'Byrne's A naval biographical dictionary (London: 1849) Vol. 1, p.70, Bellairs joined the Navy in 1809 and made Lieutenant in 1819. He evidently travelled widely: the National Maritime Museum in London hold two of his West Indian drawings, the National Library of Australia a watercolour of a scene in Panama, and a collection of his drawings of the Far East were sold in 1982.As the present drawing shows he was clearly gifted, and more than a match for many of the professional artists working at the time. His 'professional' status received contemporary confirmation when his watercolour 'View of the town of St. Thomas, in the West Indies' was drawn on stone by W.L. Walton, lithographed and hand-coloured by Charles Hullmandel, and published as a separate print in 1843 (a copy of this print is held in the New York Public Library collection, and is described by Deak).         Specimens of Ornamental Art Selected from the Best Models of the Classical Epochs Plate #34. Frieze, with children, from an Ancient painting at Pompei. (Size of the Original)

London: Thomas M'Lean, 1850. First printing Moderate foxing to edges of paper- not effecting the richness of the image. A Near Fine Original Chromolithograph. Folio. 25.5 x 20 inches, 647.7 x 508 mm. This fine and rare plate was printed in multiple colors, requiring up 20 separate stones, and finished by hand. The work was most likely executed by Wickelmann & Sons of Berlin, for which they received the Metal Prize at the Great Exhibition in 1851. Considered the very height of Victorian color printing, the work was designed by Lewis (Ludwig) Gruner, (1801-1882). Born in Dresden, Gruner became Prince Albert's trusted adviser on art and design, particularly concerning details on the noted Crystal Palace, and potential acquisitions for the newly formed the South Kensington Museum, which was to become the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1852. In addition, Gruner was mentor to Owen Jones, whose massive book production, which included his popular treatise entitled The Grammar of Ornament, influenced the very nature of color plate printing and Victorian book design. In his invaluable bibliography entitled Victorian Book Design & Colour Printing, (University of California Press, 1972), Ruari McLean states, In Lewis Gruner's Specimens of Ornamental Art, many of the polychromatic plates are the finest yet seen in Britain, the craftsmanship to produce which must have rivaled that of the original artists, who include Giotto and Michelangelo, (and Raphael). Dedicated to Prince Albert, the expressed purpose of the work was to provide examples of design and ornament for industry, and is clearly one of the most impressive achievements of mid-Victorian color printing. (Faber Birren Book Collection 207, McLean 120.)
