The Present State of Moral Principle in the Supreme Government of the British Colonial Empire? Not Published

Printed by G. Barclay, London 1850 - Slim octavo, 45 pp., very good in recent tan half calf, marbled boards. Gawler on the colonies and his reputation: "not published" Very rare privately published work by the former Governor of South Australia, and the last serious effort he made to rehabilitate his reputation in his vicious quarrels with his successor, George Grey. Gawler, who had been Governor of South Australia from 1838-41, had returned to London with his reputation in tatters, in no small part due to the energetic self-promotion of Governor Grey. Gawler had petitioned hard to have his efforts recognised, but was trumped by Grey at every turn, and by the late 1840s had all but given up any public role. It is interesting, therefore, that in 1850 he wrote the present work, 'a petition to the Queen seeking redress for the injustices done to him by successive secretaries of state. He accused George Grey of dishonesty and claimed that through his own efforts South Australia was 'the only cheap and brilliantly successful new colony in modern history'. On 11 July 1850 he was informed that Earl Grey had laid the petition before the Queen 'but could not advise her Majesty to give any orders on the subject' (ADB). Gawler's publication is understandably rare. Ferguson originally found only a copy in the then Public Library of South Australia, and another has since been noted in the National Library.         Album containing 68 original portrait studies of trades and types

India, 1850. Fine album of costumes of India. N.d. [ca. 1850]. India- In 4to (270 mm x 200 mm; drawings approximately 105 mm x 75 mm). 68 gouache on mica drawings. Finely bound in brownish morocco in the 19th century by P. D. Colnaghi, boards heavily tooled, gilt frame, interlacing and arabesque patterns, spine with discrete raised bands, also gilt in the same fashion. Some drawing removed, some loose, else fine.An attractive collection of mostly full-body portrait studies of Indian trades, costumes and types of the mid 19th century. Each drawing, clearly made by an Indian hand, is captioned in English, with the description of the trade of the person portrayed [i.e., "carpenter", "wife of the farmer", "cow keeper" and administrative figures, in full attire].The detail the drawings show provide us with a valuable iconographic rendering of real costumes in India, without the input of a European aesthetical value, usually seen in plate books of the period. Most likely the album was requested by a British soldier -a higher rank officer would have afforded a more lavish production or skilled artist- or officer.

Australian Geography, with the Shores of the Pacific And those of the Indian Ocean?

      J. Moore, George Street, Sydney 1850 - Octavo, folding frontispiece map, lower margin of title-page a little marked, light scattered foxing, a good copy in original attractive patterned cloth, joints repaired. Scarce first edition of a pioneering Australian geography textbook, inscribed by the author Sir Thomas Mitchell, renowned explorer and Surveyor-General of New South Wales. The fine world map is by the Sydney engraver John Carmichael. The book was published in Sydney by the prominent bookseller Jeremiah Moore and was specifically designed for use in New South Wales schools. This work privileges Australia's location relative to Asia and the Pacific; indeed the ADB notes of Mitchell's textbook: 'this work must have been one of the first to place Australia in the centre of the world'. Printed by Robert Barr of York Street, the work was published by Jeremiah Moore, a prosperous Sydney bookseller and stationer active between 1849-1896. Mitchell's textbook features a locally printed frontispiece world map bearing the details of the engraver, John Carmichael of Kent Street, North Sydney. Moore published several maps during his lifetime and clearly did a good trade in this regard. A printed slip tipped to the half-title of this volume directs readers to Jones' map of New South Wales and Victoria, to be had from the George Street bookstore.         Album Artistique de la Reine Hortense. Livre D'Art de la Reine Hortense. Une Visite a Augsburg, Esquisse Biographique. Lettres, Dessins, et Musique

Paris: Typographie Plon Freres, Heugel & Cie. Paris: Typographie Plon Freres, Heugel & Cie.. Half Morocco. Very Good Minus. Circa 1850 to1860. Oblong, 27.5 by 38 cm, or 10.5 by 15 inches. 23, [67] pp. Hortense was the step-daughter of Napoleon (she was the daughter of Josephine). She was married off to Napoleon's brother, Louis, who was made the king of Holland during the years 1806 to 1810.Significantly for this particular production, Hortense was the mother of Louis Napoleon, also known as Napoleon III, who at the time this opulent work was published, was the ruler of France, which thus explains the opulent commemoration of her here, as evident in the use of gold in its printing! Hortense was, in fact, of an artistic bent, and so contained herein are examples of her painting and musical compositions. There are six plates engraved by F. Sorrieu after paintings by Hortense and 24 pages of musical score by her (lyrics by the Comte de la Garde). Includes letters written by Hortense and a biography by Hippolyte Prevost. The gorgeous chromolithographs, seven in all, were done by Lemercier.Leather is rubbed and scuffed. Foxing, heavy in a few places, generally because of the card or paper.

        Clipped Signature and Inscription

1850 - Eminent British chess player of the mid-19th century considered one of the greatest of all time. He was the very first Grand Master and the first President of the prestigious Clifton Chess Club. Astonishingly, his career preceded the use of the time clock, and it was reported that he would take up to 2 1/2 hours for a single move. In the Grand Master Tournament of 1851, when a 20-minute-per-turn time limit was adopted (the standard that is used today), Williams won every match he played against the best players of Europe. Bobby Fischer, in an interview with Time Magazine, credited Williams' use of dynamic openings as the biggest influence on his career. Williams died of Cholera at the age 44. 1.75 x 3 inches, no place, no date, circa 1850. Rare full signature removed from the dedication page of a book which he signed to fellow chess player William G. Stearns, in full: "Elijah Williams to his friend William G. Stearns." Evenly toned and boldly written in iron gall brown ink. Tiny damp-stain on the left edge, far from the inscription. Very good(-) condition.

Berlin, E. S. Mittler und Sohn, 1850.. . - Friedlaender 113. ADB XXXII 742. Bibl. d. Preuß. Generalstabes S. 478.

Schaumburg, 10. I. 1850.. 10 SS. auf 6 (= 3 Doppel-)Blatt. 4to.. An Karl Frh.

Printed by Imprimerie Auguste Bry. Typography: Henri Plon Paris: Au Bureau du Journal Les Modes Parisiennes. Printed by Imprimerie Auguste Bry. Typography: Henri Plon. First Edition. Wraps, with Custom-Made Folder. Very Good . N.d., circa 1850. Colas 103 gives an earlier date, 1838, but this is improbable based on some of the dancers and roles depicted. Fourteen hand-colored plates of the leading ballerinas of the day, all in performance: Taglioni, in La sylphide (a role she created in 1832); Rosati, in Corsaire; Ferraris, in des Elfes; Zaina Richard, in Marco Spada; Marquet, in Marco Spada; Marquet, in le ballet du Dieu et la bayadère; Fiocre, in L'amour de Pierre de Medicis; Cassegrain, in Marco Spada; Emarot, in Guillaume Tell; Emma Livry, in Herculanum; Caroline, in Marco Spada; Plunkett, in La mañola de La favorite; Vibon, in le ballet Vert-Vert; and Lefevre, in Orfa. Aided by the restrained use of color, which bears a similarity to how photographs would be hand colored, the illustrations have a near-photographic quality, and they thereby convey to us the physical aesthetic that prevailed in the mid-nineteenth century on the dance stage. Measuring 34 by 25 cm. The green wraps have a paper infill where there was edge chipping and tearing. Spine paper now gone. After heavy soiling on the first tissue guard, though, the plates are all clean and bright, and other than tiny corner creases, without issue. A handsome tan cloth custom-made box now houses the book.
