Album containing specimens of Turkish calligraphy, documents, watercolours, hand-coloured lithographs, and a dated photograph.

Constantinople, Smyrna and other places, c. 1850.. Folio (370 x 265 mm). Comprising 15 hand-coloured lithographs, 3 prints, 14 costume watercolours, and 16 documents, one calligraphic poem, and a photograph. With a few other unconnected pieces. Original giltstamped cloth titled "Scrapbook".. A remarkable scrapbook evidently compiled in Turkey over a period of time, mainly the 1860s and 1870s. This album includes a number of prints from the well-known period lithographic series produced by the celebrated Smyrna printer Tatikian. The figures are notable for the naturalistic qualities which set them apart from the so many other stylised costume plates: "the drawings seem to be of real people, and are not idealized. Most of the plates depict the costume of the ordinary people of the Ottoman Empire, including a number from the region of Smyrna.. [...] Tatikian produced these lithographs as separate items, much as postcards are produced today, and the customer purchased only those which interested him. Thus the contents of different collections vary" (Atabey). The figures here present include Sheikhs, public scribes, Albanian priests, an Armenian water carrier, Greek ladies, etc., mostly living in Smyrna. The photograph, showing a "Kiosk erected in the Sultan's Valley at Baicas for the Empress Eugenie to review the troops", is dated Oct. 1869. Other material in this fascinating and wide-ranging trove includes diplomatic passports, quarantine passes in Ottoman Turkish, lithographs of Sultan Abdul Medjid Khan and Sultan Abdul Aziz, an outstanding leaf of Arabic calligraphy, consisting of an epitaph on Mehmed Chelebi by the poet Sururi (with English interlinear translation), a watercolour of "Mohammet's ascent to Heaven on 'Borak'" (with the Prophet's face veiled), and assorted collected invitations and deeds, many in Hebrew (indeed, the collector of this scrapbook would seem to have moved much within the Jewish community of Smyrna), as well as a few specimens of East Asian art. - Some spotting, extremities rubbed. An uncommon collection. - Cf. Atabey 1196f. Blackmer 1928.

        Fores's Hunting Accomplishments

1850. Hunting Accomplishments"Six Magnificent Hand Colored Aquatint PlatesALKEN, Henry. Fores's Hunting Accomplishments. Set of Six Plates Drawn by Henry Alken [Engraved by J. Harris]. London: Messrs. Fores, 1850. First edition. Oblong folio (12 3/4 x 19 3/16 inches; 325 x 488 mm). Specially printed title-page which also include a listing of the plates. Six hand colored aquatint plates in thick card mounts, each image size approximately 8 1/8 x 11 1/8 inches and each plate size approximately 10 x 13 1/4 inches. All plates window framed in 1/8 inch thick card, mounted on stubs. The fourth plate "In and Out Clever" has an expertly repaired, four inch tear at the top, plates one, two and six also have expertly repaired short marginal tears.Finely bound by Aquarius of London (stamp-signed on front turn-in) ca. 1990 in full red morocco over boards, front cover decoratively lettered and bordered in gilt. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt, decoratively gilt board edges and turn-ins. Fine. With the exception of the aforementioned expertly repaired tear to plate 4 this is a fine and clean copy in a very attractive binding. Dudley Snelgrove in The Paul Mellon Collection asserts "These are copies of the first six plates (of seven) of Qualified Horses and Unqualified Riders, 1815, which is in the collection". However we beg to disagree. We actually have an uncut copy (in the original wrappers) of the 1815 Qualified Horses and Unqualified Riders and whilst the titles are similar - the plate image sizes are not! The earlier book has seven hand colored aquatints with an average image size of 7 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches on a plate size of 10 11/16 x 14 5/8 inches. The Plates: All headed "Fore's Hunting Accomplishments. Pl. 1" [through 6] and "Drawn by H. Alken; Engraved by J. Harris; Published Novr. 1st, 1850." 1. "Going Along a Slapping Pace"2. "Topping a Flight of Rails and coming well into the next Field"3. "Swishing a Rasper"4. "In and Out Clever"5. "Charging an Ox Fence"6. "Facing a Brook""The aquatint process was developed to give the appearance of a water-colour and was used increasingly for over fifty years for large plates of grand views or small book-illustrations and for practically any subject, but it came to be used almost exclusively as the ideal medium for the best result in sporting prints. The sharp outlines and clear colouring gave them a briskness which sport required; horses seem to gallop and jump with greater verve in aquatint, while farm-horses munch more contentedly in mezzotint. Many engravers devoted themselves to the medium and, together with draughtsmen and colourists, enjoyed a steady livelihood with employment from such flourishing publishers as Rudolph Ackermann, Thomas McLean and Mesrrs. Fores. The method of soft-ground etching successfully simulated pencil-drawing and was used extensively for instructional drawing-books, but it was Henry Alken who used it constantly over many years in his albums with their countless cameos of sporting and comic incidents. Lithographs in hand-coloured form, although cheaper to produce, did not replace aquatints in popular esteem. Later in the century, the invention of chromolithography brought a high standard to colour printing, but initially it was to costly a process for the publisher of sporting prints."         Specimens of Ornamental Art Selected from the Best Models of the Classical Epochs Plate #7. Specimens of Bookbinding in the XVIth Century, from the Library at the Vatican.

Thomas M'Lean, London 1850 - A Near Fine Original Chromolithograph. Folio. 25.5 x 20 inches, 647.7 x 508 mm. This fine and rare plate was printed in multiple colors, requiring up 20 separate stones, and finished by hand. The work was most likely executed by Wickelmann & Sons of Berlin, for which they received the Metal Prize at the Great Exhibition in 1851. Considered the very height of Victorian color printing, the work was designed by Lewis (Ludwig) Gruner, (1801-1882). Born in Dresden, Gruner became Prince Albert's trusted adviser on art and design, particularly concerning details on the noted Crystal Palace, and potential acquisitions for the newly formed the South Kensington Museum, which was to become the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1852. In addition, Gruner was mentor to Owen Jones, whose massive book production, which included his popular treatise entitled The Grammar of Ornament, influenced the very nature of color plate printing and Victorian book design. In his invaluable bibliography entitled Victorian Book Design & Colour Printing, (University of California Press, 1972), Ruari McLean states, In Lewis Gruner's Specimens of Ornamental Art, many of the polychromatic plates are the finest yet seen in Britain, the craftsmanship to produce which must have rivaled that of the original artists, who include Giotto and Michelangelo, (and Raphael). Dedicated to Prince Albert, the expressed purpose of the work was to provide examples of design and ornament for industry, and is clearly one of the most impressive achievements of mid-Victorian color printing. (Faber Birren Book Collection 207, McLean 120.) slight foxing to edges of paper- not effecting the richness of the image.

Smith, 148 Hammond Street, New York, breaking the news that her husband has died due to a wound in the leg from an Indian attack that left an arrowhead sunk into an artery. Although the leg was amputated he died soon thereafter, despite being attended by five doctors (one of whom seems to also have been wounded in the attack).         Fores's Sporting Scraps. Plate 6. Coursing

Messrs. Fores, London 1850 - Four aquatint engravings on one plate, coloured by hand, by J. Harris. A fine example of Fores's excellent series, with images after one of the greatest British sporting artists. According to Siltzer the series was completed with eight plates (each with four images): one on racing, three on hunting, one on steeple-chasing and one on coursing. Henry Thomas Alken was born into what became an artistic dynasty. He studied under the miniature painter J.T. Barber and exhibited his first picture (a miniature portrait) at the Royal Academy when he was sixteen. From about 1816 onwards he "produced an unending stream of paintings, drawings and engravings of every type of field and other sporting activity. He is best remembered for his hunting prints, many of which he engraved himself until the late 1830s. To many, sporting art is 'Alken', and to describe his work or ability is quite unnecessary." (Charles Lane British Racing Prints pp.75-76). Siltzer p.65.

Speeches of Sir William Molesworth... on the Bill for the Better Government of the Australian Colonies

London: James Ridgway, 1850. Octavo, 76 pp., original brown printed wrappers bound in, owner's name and stamp for "W.B. Rhodes", old tape repairs marking the wrappers, but an excellent copy in ochre crushed morocco by Sangorski. From the library of a New Zealand settler. A heated address to parliament delivered by Sir William Molesworth, a radical English M.P. who significantly contributed to the demise of transportation to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land. From the library of a prominent whaling entrepreneur who first sailed for New South Wales in 1834. Author of the famous 1837 report condemning transportation, Molesworth consistently advocated political self-determination for the colonies. In this speech he speaks in stark terms of the consequences of denying freedom to the Australian colonies while continuing convict transportation en-masse. He eloquently surmises their frustration: 'many of the colonists, unfortunately believing their rulers to be selfish and faithless, have begun to despair, and in despair ask one another how they can redress their grievances'. Molesworth then warns that the Canadian rebellion and agitation at the Cape Colony are openly discussed in Australia as viable alternatives to the present status quo. Directed against recalcitrant members of the Colonial Office, Molesworth's speech draws upon the British loss of American colonies to stress the need for urgent change: 'we ought to maintain our colonial empire; because we knew that discontent prevailed throughout our colonies; because we believed that a train of errors, similar to that which lost us the United States, was endangering the colonial possessions that remained… because we despaired of any such reform coming from the Colonial Office.' This copy was owned by the South Seas whaler and New Zealand settler William Barnard Rhodes, by the time this work was published having established his reputation as the "millionaire of Wellington

The Personal History and Experience of DAVID COPPERFIELD the Younger

1850. New-York: W. F. Burgess, [1850]. Without the original wrappers. First American Edition. Both John Wiley / G. P. Putnam of New York and Lea & Blanchard of Philadelphia issued this tale in monthly serial parts during 1849 and 1850, so those two may be considered the first American editions to be partly published; however, this Burgess edition, cheaply produced and originally bound in simple wrappers, was the first complete American edition (though no date appears on the title page, the date 1850 did appear on the (absent) front wrapper). It consists of 264 pages of text (though it begins on page 19); this copy has seven wood-engravings in addition to the preliminary title page portrait of Dickens -- eight in all.~Originally bound in yellow wrappers, this copy lacks those wrappers and thus begins with the illustrated title page. Except for the lack of wrappers it is a very good copy, with the usual occasional foxing. Podeschi (Yale) A126; not in Carr (UTexas); not cited by Wilkins.

        Clipped Signature and Inscription

1850. unbound. 1.75 x 3 inches, no place, no date, circa 1850. Rare full signature removed from the dedication page of a book which he signed to fellow chess player William G. Stearns, in full: "Elijah Williams to his friend William G. Stearns." Evenly toned and boldly written in iron gall brown ink. Tiny damp-stain on the left edge, far from the inscription. Very good(-) condition. Eminent British chess player of the mid-19th century considered one of the greatest of all time. He was the very first Grand Master and the first President of the prestigious Clifton Chess Club. Astonishingly, his career preceded the use of the time clock, and it was reported that he would take up to 2 1/2 hours for a single move. In the Grand Master Tournament of 1851, when a 20-minute-per-turn time limit was adopted (the standard that is used today), Williams won every match he played against the best players of Europe. Bobby Fischer, in an interview with Time Magazine, credited Williams' use of dynamic openings as the biggest influence on his career. Williams died of Cholera at the age 44.

Chart of the Arctic Regions from the Admiralty Surveys

London: James Wyld, [c. 1850].. Second edition. Map diameter 38.5 cm, overall dimensions 41 x 45 cm. An attractive folding circular projection of the Arctic, original colour in outline, mounted on linen, the map folds between original brown diced cloth, with the publisher's printed title label to the upper board and their printed advertisement to the inner cover, an old tracing of Baffin Bay and the surrounding region taken from another map on a larger scale on a separate sheet is loosely enclosed. The covers a little marked and discoloured, but sound, save for some mild offsetting, the map is in very good condition. The map is dedicated to Lady Franklin, whose husband Sir John had disappeared whilst exploring the Arctic in 1845. It is now assumed that he died in early 1847, but at the time many people assumed he was still alive and Lady Franklin's campaign to send search parties to find him and his crew received widespread coverage nationally and internationally. This edition of the map highlights the discoveries of various expeditions, namely Ross, Parry, Franklin & Richardson, Beechey, Back, Dease & Samson, Rae and Kellett, with a colour coded key to the lower right corner. An uncommon map, a handful of copies of various editions are listed on Copac spread between the British Library, the National Library of Scotland and Oxford.

        The Natural History of Birds

Concord: New Hampshire, Merrill, circa, 1850. Duodecimo, with twelve wood-engravings; original pictorial wrappers, crudely sewn at spine, some tears at gutter and at foot of a couple of leaves, dusted, some foxing and stains, presentation inscription from a teacher to a student on verso of cover. Rare American children's natural history primer, including a lyrebird. Each of the ten birds is fully described and illustrated with naïve word blocks. "The Lyre Bird of New Holland" is pictured with a description of its appearance, habits and song, "This singular bird lives almost wholly on the ground, like our common poultry… The inhabitants of New Holland even call it the mountain pheasant. Its voice is far more melodious than either the bird of paradise or any domestic fowls…". The heading on the front wrapper reads "Museum of Natural History", indicating that it was evidently part of a series by this publisher. Early ephemeral books for children rarely survive, and this one with an Australian reference is not known to Ferguson.

One small marginal tear repaired, not affecting the image and the margins are a little browned but quite acceptable. Not framed or mounted at present as I hope to find an antique 'birds eye' maple to complete the authentic period piece.         Niagara Falls: General View (not titled)

[New York], [published by Goupil, Vibert & Co.] 1850 - Hand-coloured lithograph,New York & Paris [probably printed in the latter]. 1849-1851. Title ["The Rapids at Niagara" 18] and other description line trimmed off thus the paper size is much smaller than was originally printed. Paper size: 8-3/4 x 12-1/8 inches Image size: 7-3/8 x 11 inches Condition: Some light soiling and wear, a couple of old fold lines on the top left side in border, clouds in sky a pinkish colour, otherwise image is very good. The "General View" shows the sweep of the falls as seen from afar, with small figures in the foreground enjoying the sites. A lovely image of the famous falls. Lane, Impressions of Niagara 216. Kollner was a prolific and long-lived Philadelphia artist (he lived until 1908), working with most of the major firms in the city before striking out on his own. He produced a large series of views of American cities between 1848 and 1851, and these views of Niagara are among his works from that period. "At mid-century August Köllner produced an ambitious portfolio of fifty four lithographs, entitled VIEWS OF AMERICAN CITIES, which included eight images of the Niagara River. Though small in size, these lovely prints were of finer quality than the mass-produced popular lithographs. Whether sold as a set in the portfolio or as separate prints, they would have appealed to those who wanted top quality works of art" - Lane. [Attributes: First Edition]

Album Artistique de la Reine Hortense. Livre D'Art de la Reine Hortense. Une Visite a Augsburg, Esquisse Biographique. Lettres, Dessins, et Musique

Typographie Plon Freres, Heugel & Cie., Paris - Circa 1850 to1860. Oblong, 27.5 by 38 cm, or 10.5 by 15 inches. 23, [67] pp. Hortense was the step-daughter of Napoleon (she was the daughter of Josephine). She was married off to Napoleon's brother, Louis, who was made the king of Holland during the years 1806 to 1810. Significantly for this particular production, Hortense was the mother of Louis Napoleon, also known as Napoleon III, who at the time this opulent work was published, was the ruler of France, which thus explains the opulent commemoration of her here, as evident in the use of gold in its printing! Hortense was, in fact, of an artistic bent, and so contained herein are examples of her painting and musical compositions. There are six plates engraved by F. Sorrieu after paintings by Hortense and 24 pages of musical score by her (lyrics by the Comte de la Garde). Includes letters written by Hortense and a biography by Hippolyte Prevost. The gorgeous chromolithographs, seven in all, were done by Lemercier. Leather is rubbed and scuffed. Foxing, heavy in a few places, generally because of the card or paper.
