Apteryx australis. der Kiwi

Germany: circa, 1850. Original watercolour, 228 x 178 mm., mounted. An original watercolour by the German artist Hochhauser, from a series of watercolours, one of them signed (hence the definite attribution possible here). The drawings from the series are all in the same hand and have been together as a collection from the 1850s. The watercolours were evidently prepared over the period between 1830 and 1855; they are both rare and decorative, and interesting today not least as representatives of the new natural history of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, in the words of C.M. Finney (To sail beyond the sunset. Natural History in Australia, 1984) a "vast natural history treasury of bizarre and alien plants and animals that challenged both the imagination and scientific dogma". It was usual for explorers to send all material of a scientific nature to institutions, and the development of the study of natural history in Australia has always been intimately connected with the history of exploration. In several of the watercolours, it is evident that Hochhauser was working from "stuffed specimens" in museums, which would have come to Europe this way. Other drawings by the artist evidently derive from engraved illustrations, published in books of the period.

        Ortschaft am Hang.

. Feder in Schwarz, auf bräunlichem dünnem Velin. 25:40,7 cm. Skizzenbuchblatt.

Australian Geography, with the Shores of the Pacific And those of the Indian Ocean

Sydney: J. Moore, George Street, 1850. Octavo, folding frontispiece map, lower margin of title-page a little marked, light scattered foxing, a good copy in original attractive patterned cloth, joints repaired. Scarce first edition of a pioneering Australian geography textbook, inscribed by the author Sir Thomas Mitchell, renowned explorer and Surveyor-General of New South Wales. The fine world map is by the Sydney engraver John Carmichael. The book was published in Sydney by the prominent bookseller Jeremiah Moore and was specifically designed for use in New South Wales schools. This work privileges Australia's location relative to Asia and the Pacific; indeed the ADB notes of Mitchell's textbook: 'this work must have been one of the first to place Australia in the centre of the world'. Printed by Robert Barr of York Street, the work was published by Jeremiah Moore, a prosperous Sydney bookseller and stationer active between 1849-1896. Mitchell's textbook features a locally printed frontispiece world map bearing the details of the engraver, John Carmichael of Kent Street, North Sydney. Moore published several maps during his lifetime and clearly did a good trade in this regard. A printed slip tipped to the half-title of this volume directs readers to Jones' map of New South Wales and Victoria, to be had from the George Street bookstore.

Expedition der Sloop Blagonamjerenny..." [in] Archiv für die wissenschaftliche Kunde von Russland

Berlin: Reimer, 1850. Octavo pamphlet, folding plate, comprising a single issue of the journal, the Gillsen account on pp. 272-94; an excellent unopened copy in the original printed lime-green wrappers. Companion work for the 1819 Russian Arctic voyages. The first detailed abstract of the Vasil'ev/Shishmarev voyage published outside Russia, based on the extremely rare Russian original published two years previous in 1849. The companion expedition of Bellingshausen is now well-known for the dearth of contemporary published material, and this Arctic voyage was not served any better. In 1819 the Russian Admiralty undertook a double polar expedition under Bellingshausen/Lazarev (Antarctic) and Vasil'ev/Shishmarev (Arctic). The sloop Otkrytie (Discovery) was under the command of M.N. Vasil'ev, while the sloop Blagonamerennyi (Good Intent) was under the command of G.S. Shishmarew. Leaving Kronstadt in 1819 the expedition reached Port Jackson via Rio de Janeiro and the Cape of Good Hope. The two ships sailed north to Kamchatka, mapping Nukufetau Atoll en route, and naming the "Inseln des Blagonamerennyi". The ships spent some time on both shores of the Bering Sea, and particularly explored Otkrytie Island (Nunivak). Heavy pack ice beyond the Bering Strait stopped the expedition from their planned work in the deeper reaches of the Chukchi Sea. No official report was published, and the only eyewitness account from either ship was written by the midshipman of the Blagonamerennyi, Karl Karlovitch Gillsen, and published in the St. Petersburg journal Otechestvennyie Zapiski in 1849. This German translation of Gillsen's account is the first European translation of a work that was not translated into English until 1983 (Rhea Josphson, Ethnohistory in the Arctic). The title translates as "Expedition of the Sloop Blagonamjerenny to explore the Asiatic and American shores beyond the Bering-Strait in the years 1819 to 1822", and the work made the 1849 St. Petersburg publication available for the first time to a wider European audience. On the Russian expeditions see: Barratt, The Russians and Australia, pp. 87ff & Russia in Pacific Waters, pp. 201-2; Howgego II, R34, T3.

Map of South Australia, New South Wales, Van Diemen's Land , and Settled parts of Australia

London: James Wyld, n.d. but circa, 1850. Dissected hand-coloured engraved map, backed on linen as issued, 635 x 990 mm., some toning, but generally very good indeed; in the original brown cloth slip-case with the publisher Wyld's paper label to the front. An excellent Mitchell map. A fine and very attractive map of the Australian colonies circa 1850, dedicated to Sir Thomas Mitchell and issued by the famous London map-maker James Wyld the younger, Geographer to Queen Victoria, who was based in Charing Cross. The main map shows what is now New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, but there is also a series of important insets including: "Plan of Sydney", "Van Diemens Land", "Western Australia" and "Adelaide" (the last evidently based on William Light's map of "The District of Adelaide"). The Wylds seldom dated their maps, but a closely-related version of this map is thought to have been first issued in 1841; Tooley records six separate issues, and it is possible that this may in fact be another copy of Tooley 1421, despite only the handful of distinguishing features. The most likely date is in fact either 1849 or 1850 due to a combination of factors: Wyld added the premises at 2 Royal Exchange in 1846; an advertising label notes a map of the California goldfields; but this map, unlike some noted by Tooley, does not mention the Australian gold discoveries.

Parcs et Jardins des Environs de Paris

Monrocq Frères, Paris 1850 - Expertly bound to style in half brown morocco over original pebbled cloth covered boards, upper cover lettered in gilt, brown endpapers, gilt edges Provenance: Henry C. Gibson (signature) Beautifully-illustrated French work on garden design. This charming collection of color plate designs for garden plans, include many in the English style with curving walks and lakes and others in the strictly formal and geometrical French style. Victor Petit was an artist and chromolithographer who worked in Paris and northern France during the late 19th century who published several works on the subject. His interest and focus was on garden designs that would appeal to the bourgeois families who needed landscaping advice. These lovely chromolithographs are mostly bird's eye proposals or plans for small properties with various garden structures. The properties range from one sixth of an acre to more than seven and a half acres. The plans contain oval pathways, geometrical flowerbeds, plus some fruit and vegetable gardens as well. They also offer suggestions for parterres, belvederes, bridges, glasshouses, and birdcages. Scarce complete with the preliminary text leaves which describe each plate. Small folio. (13 3/8 x 10 1/4 inches). [8]pp. 50 colour lithographs. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The History and Practice of the Art of Photography; or the Production of Pictures, through the Agency of Light

New York: G.P. Putnam, 1850. Octavo, with several engraved diagrams; some staining of the preliminaries and final leaves, a good copy in original cloth (minor repair to foot of spine). Rare: second edition with a new preface, the first book on photography published in the United States of America, significantly revised with additional information on the provision of materials and chemicals required for daguerreotype production. Most of the book is devoted to the daguerreotype process, although a short chapter of some eleven pages devoted to the history of photography describes the paper negative method with detailed practical instructions. The author, Henry Hunt Snelling (1817-1897), was a keen photographer who also edited the Photographic Art Journal, a pioneering periodical of the 1850s. Snelling was professionally involved in the sale of chemicals required for producing daguerreotypes, and also worked as on the invention of specialised photographic equipment. The first edition of 1849 was a tremendous success and rapidly passed through four editions of 1000 copies each. In the preface to the second edition here offered, Snelling expresses his gratitude while extolling photography as a creative medium: 'The rapid sale of the first edition proves conclusively, that our artists, not satisfied with the mere mechanical knowledge of the art, are, on the contrary, desirous of improving both it and themselves.' In response to public curiosity, the second edition contains new information on chemical and technical process: 'Since the publication of the first edition of the Art of Photography, so many inquiries have been made for the recipes used in the art, I have deemed it advisable to append everything of the of the kind to the present issue, that can possibly be of any benefit to the operator. I would, however, express the opinion that, that in most instances it would be preferable to purchase the compounds of good chemists, or the dealers in Daguerreotype stock, than to trust your own compounding.' All editions of this book are rare - both auction and sale records are scant. As a handbook exposed to the myriad hazards of practical use, the attrition rate of the Art of Photography was presumably high. Given these considerations, the present copy is well preserved in the original cloth featuring a gilt blocked image of the daguerreotype apparatus.

Sketches of the Maribyrnong River , and the Barwon River at Geelong

Victoria: circa, 1850. Pair of drawings, 165 x 255 mm. and 182 x 260 mm., both in pencil heightened in Chinese white; in fine condition, mounted. A pair of drawings of rural Victoria from the mid-nineteenth century attributed to George Gilbert. George Gilbert arrived in Melbourne in November 1841, and immediately began work as a drawing master and teacher of lithography. He was also a pioneer in the field of photography, becoming the first resident photographer in Melbourne. Gilbert held two exhibitions at the Melbourne Mechanics Institute, in 1847 and 1849. The first included topographical views in pastel of Port Phillip and the Goulburn, Barwon, Yarra and Plenty rivers, and was described in the Port Phillip Patriot as, 'decidedly the best delineation of Australian scenery yet produced, possessing the semi-tropical peculiarities of colouring in depth and tone, which the description of crayon used and manufactured by the artist (Mr Gilbert) alone can communicate'. They were also viewed and praised by the governor of Victoria. In 1851 Gilbert exhibited drawings of Melbourne and Geelong at the Victorian Industrial Society's first exhibition; these were described as 'beautiful crayon drawings' of well-known scenery in Melbourne and Geelong which were highly commended by the judges. These two sketches of the Maribyrnong River, and of the hills above the Barwon River at Geelong are very typical of Gilbert's style, and show a picturesque landscape in pre-gold rush times.
