A Letter to the Queen on a Late Court Martial, With Long Inscription

1850. "The Miserable Matter-Product of Ineffable Ingratitude and Profligacy" Warren, Samuel [1807-1877]. A Letter to the Queen on a Late Court Martial. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood & Sons/William Benning & Co., 1850. xiii, 262 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Original limp cloth, recently rebacked, blind frames to covers, gilt title to front cover, endpapers renewed. Light rubbing, moderate rubbing to extremities with some wear to corners. Light toning to text, inscriptions from Warren to front free endpaper, head of title page, entire verso of title page and head of following leaf. $1,750. * Only edition. Warren, an attorney and legal reformer, is best known as the author of Ten Thousand A-Year (1841), a satirical novel about English law. A Letter to the Queen is an ardent defense of Capt. George Douglas, who was accused on lying to a fellow office. Warren withdrew it from the market shortly after its publication. Warren inscribed our copy to his son, Samuel Lilckendy Warren on September 13, 1858. His detailed inscription expresses his embarrassment from this case. At the top of the title Warren has written: "Withdrawn from circulation-the reasons are explained on the back of this page. N.B. Every line of the proofs was carefully corrected by Lord Brougham.... I have the original proofs still by me." Warren was indignant at the perceived injustice and procedural flaws in his trial. This opinion was shared by Lord Brougham, who addressed the House of Lords about this case. As indicated by Warren's inscription, his work benefited from Brougham's advice and editorial assistance. Shortly after the publication of A Letter, "all was ruined by the infamous conduct of Mr. Douglas in eloping from Cheltanham with the daughter of a gentleman who wrote me in anguish & horror, that it was this letter of mine which gained Mr. Douglas admission to the house which he had desecrated. The news nearly broke my heart.... All my six months gratuitous labour & anxiety, my sacrifice of an entire long vacation, my expence in printing, publishing and adorning this "Letter"--my having risked the enmity of the Duke of Wellington & many other persons (including the Queen)--all thrown away in one moment by the profligate act of one I had done so much to serve...." Warren goes on to relate further embarrassment, the c.

St. Louis, MO, (N. R. Cormany), 1850. - 8vo. 200 pp. Contemporary red marbled boards. Sole German edition of this political and economical manifesto by John Pickering (1777-1846) from Massachusetts, equally appreciated as a lawyer and as a linguist. The English original ("The working man’s political economy, founded upon the principle of immutable justice, and the inalienable rights of man; designed for the promotor of national reform") was published posthumously in 1847, a year after Pickering’s death, which fact may have contributed to the unremarkable impact the work had at the time. More than a century later it enjoyed a modest revival when it was reprinted in the series "American labor from conspiracy to collective bargaining" in 1971. The German translation has remained even more obscure and cannot be traced bibliographically or in the trade; library catalogues list a single copy (Duke University Library). - Browned and brownstained (the title page more so), but well preserved. Cf. Kress C 7178 (only the English original). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      - "Dutch ideal landscape" original oil painting on cardboard approx.19x27cm; bottom right signed; around 1850 [Dimensions of the leaf-gilt wooden frame made by the Munich professional workshop Petzenhammer 26x34cm.] Bd., S. 300ff.).         TWO RIVERBOAT FOLDED-LETTER BILLS OF LADING FROM ST. LOUIS HIDE MERCHANTS; One folded-letter bill of lading for a grain, lard, and hide shipment sent by D. W. Matthews, Esq. via the riverboat E Bates, and one folded-letter bill of lading for a hide shipment sent by Charles F. Hendry Forwarding and Commission Agent via the riverboat Dr. Franklin No. 2

St. Louis, 1850. Unbound. Very good. The E. Bates two-page manuscript 1849 bill of lading, measuring 15.5" x 10 unfolded, is for 40 sacks of oats, 15 hides, and one barrel of lard and includes a letter to the purchaser. "B/L" is written in the upper right corner of the cover. "E. Bates," indicating the name of the boat that transported the goods along with the bill of lading is in the bottom left corner. The Dr. Franklin No 2 bill of lading from 1850 measures 8.75" x 11"; it is partially-printed on light blue paper and completed in both fine cursive and a calligraphic script that identifies the shipment as "'One Hundred', (100) Green Hides" weighing 6367 lbs. Instructions indicate that the receiver, Cornwell & Brothers, was to turn them over in care of A. I. Wilson Esq. of Danville, Kentucky for shipment to Dunn & Adam of Oregon, Kentucky. The cover is addressed to Mess'rs Conwall & Brothers of Louisville "per 'Dr Franklin No.2'" and postmarked with a bold, "Steamer / No. 2 / Dr. Franklin" handstamp. Just one month after the Ed Bates bill of lading was dated, the riverboats was destroyed in the Great St. Louis Fire of 1849. On 17 May, the paddle-wheeler White Cloud caught fire while docked at the St. Louis Levee at the foot of Cherry Street. The fire quickly spread to the Ed Bates, and when the Ed Bates broke free of her mooring she slowly floated down river igniting about 35 other boats and barges along the wharf. Although the Fire Department's nine hand engines and hose reel wagons responded rapidly, it was of no use. The flames jumped to nearby buildings and soon four city blocks were on fire. The flames spread to Main Street and burned out eight more blocks in the heart of the city. As a last resort, kegs of black powder were used to blow-up six buildings and create a fire break. When the fire was finally contained after 11 hours, 430 buildings were destroyed, 23 steamboats along with over a dozen other boats were lost and 3 people had died including a Fire Captain. As a result of the fire, the city modernized its water system and revised its building code to require new structures be built of stone or brick The Charles F. Hendry leather wholesalers were located at "No. 54 Water Street, corner Vine," which I believe today would be right along the Mississippi River about midway between Eads Bridge and the north leg of the Arch. The Dr. Franklin No. 2, a 189-ton sidewheeler, was launched at Wheeling, Virginia in 1848 and owned by the Harris Brothers who were based in Galena, Illinois, not far from Dubuque, Iowa. In 1852 at St. Genevieve, Missouri, its boiler exploded, apparently killing a number of people. Ned Buntline, the western dime novelist and friend of Buffalo Bill, was said to have been on board at the time. The riverboat was repaired, however it was destroyed by fire the following at the wharf in St.Louis. A nice pair of mid-19th century river commerce records. The Dr. Franklin's ornate postmark is especially scarce. As of 2017, none similar are for sale in the ephemera or philatelic trade, nor are there any records of institutional holdings. Only two similar examples have been sold at auction in the past 50 years.

        Harmonies économiques.

Paris: Guillaumin et Cie,, 1850. Octavo (211 x 132 mm). Contemporary quarter roan, spine lettered in gilt, compartments and raised bands ruled in blind and gilt. With the separately paginated publisher's catalogue to the rear. Ownership inscription, partially faded, to title page. Extremities worn, boards scuffed, hinges gently cracked but firm, contents a little foxed, upper edge of half-title shaved, overall a very good copy. First edition of Bastiat's exploration of the concept of harmony, published the year of his death. "In this brilliant work, unhappily never finished, Bastiat shows the contrast between the internal weakness of the artificial organisations which are founded on constraint, and the prosperity spontaneously arising in an economic condition in which the equilibrium of individual and collective forces results from their free and reciprocal balance. This is the fundamental thought (idée mère) on which the Harmonies économiques are based, and granted this as a philosophic basis, it could not have been developed with more skill" (Palgrave I, p. 123-4).

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS): "I regard New York as the most remarkable town in the world"

23 October 1850, Cooperstown - An incredible 3-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED on two sheets of 8-1/2" x 6-7/8" paper by the author of THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS written on behalf of James Henry Hackett (1800–1871) to his old friend Charles Augustus Murray (1806–1895) who was at this time consul-general in Egypt. In part: After imparting news of Hackett, Cooper reports on his age and on the development of his country: "Half my time passes me, in looking back. At sixty, if a man is ever to sum up the good and evil of his past life, it is high time he began. I was sixty-one last September and have grown gray. We are 'progressing' as we Americans call it, at a famous rate. New York must have doubled its population, recently, since you saw it. Taking all things together, I regard New York as the most remarkable town in the world. Trade is driving all before it, and has fairly invaded Broadway. Talking of the dust, which is so shortly to be my portion [Cooper died the next year], one of the most painful of my recollections of my own travels, is the great number of the dead, among the acquaintances I made. At one time it really seemed as if to know me was to die. My eldest daughter, whom you may remember, has ventured to give the world a book called 'Rural Hours.' In this country it has done very well. There is a good deal of rumbling in our body politic, but I think nothing will come of it, just now. The South has too much at stake to risk, and every day it loses, increases the disparity of the forces. This acquisition of California, hems in slavery, which must finally fall of its own weight. What we are to do with the blacks, God knows, but we shall never amalgamate." Cooper goes on to discuss the importance of gold in expanding business ("a circulating medium being the great necessity of America") and devotes a paragraph to a paranormal phenomenon which he calls "the knockings": "All attempts at explanation are failures. They are not confined to one family, or one place, but have been heard in fifty places." He closes "Do not ask Hackett about my comedy, premature damnation being best forgotten." Housed in a cloth folder titled on the spine. Hackett was a successful character actor on the New York and London stages, who was considered for a part in Cooper's sole and unsuccessful attempt at playwriting, UPSIDE DOWN. This letter was given to Hackett to present to Murray in London (and is noted by James F. Beard ed., LETTERS AND JOURNALS OF JAMES FENIMORE COOPER: 6:229, n.2 as "unlocated"). Fine condition with dark ink in a Fine folder of this exceptional letter [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Dedicated to the Right Hon. the Lady Mayoress, (without permission,) by a ragged scholar.

[York: n.p.] [c.1850] - single 4to broadside on thin paper printed on recto only with drop head title above 12 stanzas of verse in 2 columns; a few old folds but a remarkable survival. v.g. Not in the BL or Library of Congress; no copies recorded on Copac or OCLC; no other copies traced. A satirical poem written upon the occasion of a royal banquet on October 25th 1850 in support of the forthcoming Great Exhibition. Hosted by the Lord Mayor of York, George Hicks Seymour, the dinner was attended by the Prince Consort as guest of honour along with the Lord Mayor of London, John Musgrove, and the Prime Minister, Lord Russell. The banquet, overseen by Alexis Soyer, the celebrated French chef, included a choice of over 70 dishes with a 'Hundred Guinea' dish for the Royal table that combined turtle heads and all kinds of birds, from turkeys to larks. The pomp and excess of such a dinner is sarcastically attacked by the anonymous writer who plays the part of a pupil of a ragged school. ?The Guildhall is deck?d/In magnificent taste,/And Soyer has cooked/All his frogs and his paste./Two pounds and tens shillings/Each Mayor has to pay,/The value of which/They will soon stow away. I?d give you their speeches/If I were but there,/But I?m a ragged Scholar,/And not yet a Mayor./ I had hoped the spare grub/Would have come to our School,/But Soyer will bone it,/I?m told - aint this cool?? Established as the first ragged school in York in 1848 (and the only ragged school operating in 1850), the York Industrial Ragged School was designed to keep orphans, waifs and strays off the streets of the Parish. The school was overseen by the parish beadle George Pimm. Affected by alcoholism, paranoia and greed, he kept the children in cold and unclean conditions leading to the premature deaths of several of his charges. In order to keep the money attributed to each child, he would secretly bury those who did not survive the squalid conditions.

The dwellings of the labouring classes, their arrangement and construction; illustrated by a reference to the model houses of the Society for Improving the Condition of the Labouring Classes, and other buildings recently erected: being an essay, read January 21, 1850, at the Royal Institute of British Architects. With plans and elevations of dwellings adapted to towns, as well as to agricultural and manufacturing districts.

London: published by request and sold for the benefit of the Society for Improving the Condition of the Labouring Classes at no.21 Exeter Hall Strand; also by Seeleys Nisbet & Co. J.W. Parker; and Hatchard. n.d 1850 - royal 8vo., 12 unnumbered lithographic plates (each with closed and repaired tear but no loss), (8) + 34pp. + 35 - 44 + (2) + 45 - 47 ff., including the half-title, with numerous text figures and whole-page illustrations (these largely architectural plans and elevations of actual and proposed buildings), original blind-stamped cloth with short title in gilt on upper cover, neatly rebacked and recased with replaced endpapers. A very good copy. First edition. A founder member (1835) and fellow (1837) of the Institute of British Architects, Roberts was well established by the time he was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1838, but it is as a pioneer of working-class housing that he is of great historical importance. The Destitute Sailors' Asylum, Whitechapel (1835), marked the beginnings of his practical involvement in the subject, and in 1844 he became a founder member and the honorary architect of the reconstituted Society for Improving the Condition of the Labouring Classes (SICLC). With Prince Albert as the first president and Lord Ashley, later earl of Shaftesbury (1801–1885), as an effective vice-president, the SICLC was instrumental in changing laissez-faire attitudes to housing the poor, largely by erecting and publishing a variety of exemplary buildings, all to designs by the honorary architect. Roberts's most successful model dwellings for the society were the block of self-contained flats in Streatham Street, Bloomsbury (1849–50), and the celebrated exhibition building containing four flats financed by Prince Albert for the Great Exhibition of 1851, the published designs for which were influential and widely copied. Over the former the SICLC waged a successful campaign to get the government to abolish the taxes on windows and bricks that had imposed excessive financial costs on philanthropic housing societies until then. The latter building was re-erected at Kennington Park after the exhibition closed. Roberts was also the author of numerous publications dealing with philanthropic housing, the most important of which was The Dwellings of the Labouring Classes> (1850; subsequent editions, including that of 1867, also translated into French).

-Panning. B.Panning, Joseph Weiger und die Einführung der Anästhesie in Wien, WMW 141/13, 1991, S.291 - 293 Crowley 530 Engelmann Suppl.272 Walser, Einführung der Äthernarkose im dt.Sprachgebiet.
