PRIMA EDIZIONE.

Zeitung vom 5. 9. 1917). - Umschlag etwas fleckig, sonst gutes, unbeschnittenes Exemplar im Orig.-Lieferungszustand. - Goed. XIII 389, 56. Borst 2396.

The chronology of creation; or, geology and scripture reconciled

Calcutta: W. Thacker, 1850. First edition. <p>Hutton, Thomas. The chronology of creation; or, geology and scripture reconciled. [2, half-title], xvi, [2, errata], 503pp. Half-title printed in red. Hand-colored lithograph frontispiece and 3 handcolored plates. Calcutta: W. Thacker & Co., 1850. 227 x 139 mm. Original green blind-stamped cloth, gilt-lettered spine, light rubbing. Minor dust-soiling, but very good. Ownership signature on half-title.</p><p>First Edition. A rebuttal of Buckland&#39;s Geology and Mineralogy Considered With Reference to Natural Theology (1837). Hutton, a strict Biblical literalist, rejected the more liberal views of earth history and species development expressed by Buckland, who</p><p>"particularly emphasized William Paley&#39;s position that the world was not made for man alone but for the pleasure of all species of life; in relation to the object to be attained, all organic mechanisms are equally good, are evidence of beneficent adaptation. He reasserted that it is futile to try to reconcile geological epochs with the days of creation in Genesis . . . As a geological system Buckland chose, possibly borrowing from De la Beche and Conybeare, progressive development from an initially hot earth, with discontinuous assemblages of organic life being created and dying out. To express a secular development while simultaneously rejecting continuous progress and transmutation, he deliberately kept the rhetoric of the Great Chain of Being, but with missing links or gaps in the present creation being filled up by fossil organisms from past time periods. This was a noteworthy change from Cuvier, and a major step in the conversion of a balanced Malthusian ecology into a system maintaining its balance while it changed over time" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). </p><p>Buckland&#39;s advocacies of change over time-an idea basic to evolutionary theory-were anathema to Hutton, who refused to accept Buckland&#39;s theory of successive creations. </p><p>"[W]ith regard to our Earth having arisen out of the &#39;wreck and ruins&#39; of a former world, there is decidedly not the slightest foundation for such a belief to be gathered from any sentence in the Mosaic narrative, but, on the contrary, when we are told that &#39;in the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth,&#39;-we are told so in reference solely to our own actual planet, and not to any world which may have preceded it. The materials from which our Earth was at length produced, were apparently called into being expressly for that purpose. We are not taught to believe that in the beginning, God created a Heaven and an Earth, from whose ruins our world was at length phoenix-like to spring forth; but that they were created with reference to the present system alone, for in the whole narrative of Creation nothing appears to be brought forward but what has strict and sole reference to us, and to the Earth which we now inhabit" (Hutton, pp. 53-54).</p><p>Hutton&#39;s book was first published in India, where he was a captain in the Bengal Army. A London edition was issued in 1851. Morton, G. R., "Nineteenth Century Opponents of Geology and Evolution," <http://home.entouch.net/dmd/nineteenth.htm></p>

Vollständiges französisch - deutsches und deutsch - französisches Handwörterbuch. Nach den neuesten Bestimmungen und Forschungen herausgegeben ., Zwei Bände.

Leipzig; Philipp Reclam, o.J. (ca. 1850). - 874 S. und 936 S. Einbände berieben; Band 2 Lederrücken löse (liegt bei); Seiten gebräunt u. tlw. fleckig. - Zweiter Band in zwölfter Auflage. Bernard also asked his correspondent to send him current issues of the Revue medicale, the Revue medico-chirurgicale and the "Journal des conn[aissances] medico-chirurgicales," so that he might recast the medical review article into a different form, "which I believe will be very profitable for your journal."         Mr. Briggs receiving a proper invitation from Major Plumper to come over again to Ireland in the Hunting Season and have a day with the Galway Blazers-Mr. B., says he would like it extremely immeasurably.

n.p., [c. 1850] - John Leech (1817-1864) was one of the most prolific and successful of the English artists and caricaturists of the mid 19th century. "His humour was like his talent, gentle, warm-hearted and positive, his world, the ups and downs of middle class life, the sports of the squirearchy, and the peccadilloes of army officers and undergraduates" (Houfe). The conventions of social humor he established with his first contributions to the newly founded Punch, in 1841, lasted into the 1920s, but his greatest fame came through his book illustrations, particularly those for Surtees's sporting novels. "Extravagantly praised by Ruskin, Leech's often careless but never crude drawings have survived in charm and humour to give us a refreshing glimpse of mid-Victorian society." (Houfe) Approx. 5-3/4 x 8-1/4 inches. Pencil and watercolor on paper, signed "John Leech", mounted on board, matted. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Whampoa Anchorage with American, British and Danish Shipping

Chinese, circa 1850 - Tingua and his studio Chinese, c. 1845-1855 Gouche on pith paper Framed size: 17 1/4&#148; x 21 1/2&#148; The studio of the artist Tingqua was perhaps the most prolific source of Chinese export painting during the nineteenth century. Located at 16 China Street, Guangzhou, the school specialized in gouache and watercolor paintings influenced by Western artistic traditions. These works became known in America primarily through the American China trader Augustine Heard, who brought a substantial collection of Tingqua paintings back to the United States in ca. 1855. These are now located at the Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. Tingqua was from a family of Chinese artists, each of whom were recognized for there skills in painting scenes suitable for the export market. His father, Guan Zuolin, often known by his western name, Spoilum, was the first identifiable artist of the Cantonese export school. These exquisite little views absolutely typify Tingqua&#146;s style and technique. All four works display the Tingqua denotation of the sea by regular parallel lines, sometimes with ripples in the foreground. Moreover, his characteristic mannerism of representing trees as thick clusters of yellow-green leaves is amply demonstrated in his paintings of the Canton Waterfront with the U.S. Steamer &#147;Spark&#148; and Whampoa Anchorage with American, British and Danish Shipping. These watercolors also illustrate the diversity of countries trading in China, particularly in the former work, with the flags of the American, British, French and Danish nations displayed prominently along the skyline. Above all, Tingqua&#146;s work is perhaps most recognized for its exquisite characterization of daily life and for its exceptional detail. The precision of the brushwork and concentration upon light effects is superb, and in each scene the importance of world trade with China is beautifully displayed.

Les Parures. Fantasie par Gavarni. Texte par Méry. Histoire de la mode par le C.te Foelix [i. e. L. F. Raban].

Paris, (Lacour für) G. de Gonet, Martinon, Veuve Louis Janet sowie Karl Twietmeyer (Leipzig), [1850]. - Small folio. (4), 300 pp. With hand-coloured engr. frontispiece and 15 hand-coloured engr. plates with laced edges and tissue guards. Original giltstamped red cloth. All edges gilt. First edition. - Charming work of French fashion illustration, also depicting acessoires, jewels, and flower decorations. The 16 steel engravings are by Geoffroy, based on drawings by the much-sought Gavarni (1804-66), and depict "studies of beautiful women, fashionably attired for the most part, which were drawn in London. Méry wrote the 'fantasy' accompanying them to fit Gavarni's designs" (Ray). - This is the "appealing [.] special edition in which the steel engravings are printed and delicately colored on paper with borders cut to various lace patterns. So presented, Gavarni's designs become fashion plates of the first order" (ibid.). Another similarly designed volume was published that same year, a fact pointed at by the series title "Perles et Parues". - Slight foxing; tiny defects to spine-ends. Hungarian library stamp.
