        [General Lafayette]

1850. Mixed method mezzotint and engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on fine india paper mounted on thick white wove as issued. In excellent condition. Image size: 9 1/8 x 7 inches. This is a wonderful proof impression of this lovely oval portrait of General Lafayette, the great American sympathizer. Lafayette's actions during the American Revolution earned him a place in America's pantheon of heroes. Joining the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, he was one of the first Frenchman to come to America's aid. Through his valiant commitment to the American cause, Lafayette became a close associate of Washington's, and he helped negotiate French aid for the rebellion. He was voted a major general at the age of 20 by the Continental Congress, and his actions at the battle of Yorktown helped corner the British forces, leading to their surrender. Returning to France, he became involved in Revolution, making him, ultimately, a hero in his own country and in the New World. In 1824, as the United States approached its 50th anniversary, President Monroe invited General Lafayette to return to America. He enjoyed a hero's welcome and toured the 24 states in triumph. Lafayette had a great love for the United States, a sentiment which is best expressed in his eloquent words to Henry Laurens, the Congressional President; "The moment I heard of America I loved her; the moment I knew she was fighting for freedom I burnt with a desire of bleeding for her; and the moment I shall be able to serve her, at any time, or in any part of the world, will be the happiest of my life". Through his involvement in the American and French revolutions Lafayette became a symbol of the ideals of liberty and release from tyranny. Lafayette's veneration for the United States was so strong that when he returned to France, he took with him a plot of American soil, within which he was buried.

Wanderings of a Pilgrim, in Search of the Picturesque,

London: Pelham Richardson,, 1850. during Four-and-Twenty Years in the East; with Revelations of Life in the Zenana... Illustrated with Sketches from Nature. 2 volumes large octavo. Original blue morocco-grained cloth, title gilt to the spines together with a block of Krishna playing his flute, large gilt panel incorporating Skanda mounted on a peacock to the front boards, the same design in blind to the lower. 49 plates, 21 of them chromolithographs, 4 with hand-colour and finished with gum arabic, the rest lithographic, 8 single-tint, uncoloured folding lithographed panorama of the Himalayas in an end-pocket to volume I. A little rubbed, and with some small repairs head and tail of the spines, endpapers renewed, light browning to the text-block, some spotting of the plates, the uncoloured lithographs being particularly affected, but overall a very good copy retaining the handsome original cloth. First edition. Uncommon, and highly sought-after particularly in the cloth. "Fanny and Charles Parks sailed for Calcutta in June 1822, finally leaving India in August 1845. Her account of her years in India, Wanderings of a Pilgrim in Search of the Picturesque, largely based on the journal which she kept for her mother, was published in 1850. The focus of the book was India, its people, and their culture. It thus gains momentum when, in 1826, the Parkses left Calcutta, where life was largely confined to British society, to live 'up country' in Allahabad. Here Charles spent almost all his time. Fanny, however, travelled extensively: she sailed by herself in their pinnace, the Seagull, up the Jumna River to Agra, and up the Ganges to Fatehgarh, and spent nearly a year visiting Cawnpore, Meerut, Delhi, and Landour in the Himalayas … Her husband, whom she describes as kind and considerate, encouraged her travels. The couple had no children, and he probably realised that, in a society which saw a woman's natural focus as her family, she needed an alternative outlet for her energies. These were considerable: she was characterised by remarkable physical stamina, and indefatigable enthusiasm and curiosity about every aspect of Indian life. Everywhere she went she sketched. She studied and noted every aspect of the peoples she met, and the plant, animal, and insect life she encountered, preserving with arsenical soap specimens for her renowned 'cabinet of curiosities', which also housed a heterogeneous assortment of interesting objects, especially Hindu figures. Her fluent Hindustani enabled her to penetrate Indian life, and she adopted some Indian customs, signing her writing and drawings in Persian script … and playing the sitar. She admired the dignity and grace of Indian life, in which she considered European ways were often an ugly intrusion. Although an Anglican, she was sceptical about attempts at religious conversion and the effect of some European philanthropic endeavours … Fanny Parks's book, which was extensively illustrated with drawings by herself, her friends, and Indian artists, was lavishly produced and won wide acclaim. Reviewers noted the accuracy, detail, and range of observation—as well as the unusual character of the authoress" (ODNB).

        Harmonies economiques.

(Einaudi, 325. Goldsmiths, 36728). Quelques rousseurs. Bon exemplaire, bien relie a l'epoque..

FIRST EDITION OF FOUCAULT'S DETERMINATION OF THE VELOCITY OF LIGHT, here proving that light travels more slowly in water than in air. Significantly, his findings contradicted the corpuscular theory but were in complete accord with the wave theory of light. "In 1850 Foucault joined the debate over the then-competing particle and wave theories of light. Arago had demonstrated in 1838 that a crucial test could be made by comparing the velocities of light in air and in a dense medium, and he was experimenting to determine the velocity of light with a rotating-mirror method devised by Charles Wheatstone in 1834. Lack of success and ill health led Arago to pass the task on to Foucault in 1850. "Success came in the same year, when Foucault observed a retardation of the velocity of light in water, giving support to the wave theory. He then saw how the rotating-mirror method could be refined to measure the absolute velocity of light in a restricted space. Foucault overcame the technical problems and in 1862 obtained a value of 2.98 x 1010 centimeters per second, the first accurate measure of this fundamental physical constant" (Encyclopedia of World Biography). Foucault's experiment was so conclusive that it was widely understood to have "driven the last nail in the coffin" of Newton's corpuscular theory of light" (Cassidy, Understanding Physics). ALSO IN THIS VOLUME: First edition of an important nerve experiment by Helmholtz marking the beginning of the field of 'neurophysiology'. CONDITION & DETAILS: Complete volume. Ex-libris bearing only a deaccessioned stamp on the back of the title page and slight ghosting at the spine where a spine level has been removed. 4to (11 x 8 inches; 275 x 200mm). [6], 886, [2]. Bound in clean full blue cloth, gilt-lettered at the spine. Solidly and tightly bound. Very occasional toning, otherwise clean and bright throughout.

n.p., [c. 1850]. Image approx. 8 x 10 inches; matted and framed to 14-3/4 x 16-3/4 inches overall. Pen and ink and watercolor on paper, initialled "JL", and captioned by the artist, as above. Very good . John Leech (1817-1864) was one of the most prolific and successful of the English artists and caricaturists of the mid 19th century. "His humour was like his talent, gentle, warm-hearted and positive, his world, the ups and downs of middle class life, the sports of the squirearchy, and the peccadilloes of army officers and undergraduates" (Houfe). The conventions of social humor he established with his first contributions to the newly founded Punch, in 1841, lasted into the 1920s, but his greatest fame came through his book illustrations, particularly those for Surtees's sporting novels. "Extravagantly praised by Ruskin, Leech's often careless but never crude drawings have survived in charm and humour to give us a refreshing glimpse of mid-Victorian society." (Houfe)

        Dendrortyx Barbatus

John Gould (1804-1881) was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor, from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became an expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was able to meet with the country?s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, ?A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.? For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. His wife Elizabeth and other artists were able to transfer his sketches to stone; hand print and hand color them. Gould became the leading publisher of ornithological illustrations in Victorian Britain, creating over three thousand plates of birds in over forty volumes.John Gould commenced his "A Monograph of the Odontophorinae, or Partridges of America" in 1844 and published it in London in 1850 which contains 32 expertly hand-colored lithographic plates. This folio-sized, hand-colored lithograph from ?Partridges of America? measures 14.25? x 21.25? and is in excellent condition with a few faint foxing marks. Commonly called Bearded Wood-Partridges, these birds are expertly hand-colored with wings in shades of brown, rufous colored undersides and chests and gray necks and faces. Precise lines define and detail each feather and give intricate patterns to their rich plumage.

- Gefaltet. -
