Eleven chromolithographs of fruit and flowers from "Fruits from the Garden and Field."

London.. [ 1850].. Each plate 10 x 7 inches. Plates have overall light foxing; the peach has discoloration at the top left of the sheet. Loosely laid into the original elaborately embossed leather binding which has been mended with a soft brown leather spine. Sold as a group of plates. This is a group of 11 of the 12 plates that were published in Fruits from the Garden and Field. As one would expect with a work associated with Owen Jones, the chromolithography is of an extremely high quality, including the use of gold lettering. These are naturalistic treatments of plants, as opposed to the decorative design of much of Jones work, but pattern is an important part of the image. Each plant is associated with a quality or sentiment, which is elegantly but lightly lettered in gold (and sometimes a little hard to read). The fruits and flowers are: apple (utility); pomegranate (hard to make out - amb..?); wheat and hops (strength & wealth); blackberries and other red berries (charity); strawberries (kisses); grapes (hospitality); hazelnuts? and grain (retrospection); cherries (smiles); mulberries? (tears); peach (sensibility?); apricots (independence). .

[NATIVE AMERICAN INDIANS] Organization of a New Indian Territory, East of the Missouri River: Arguments and Reasons Submitted to the Honorable the Members of the Senate and House of Representatives of the 31st Congress of the United States By the Indian Chief Kah-Ge-Ga-Gah-Bouh, or Geo Copway

New York: S.W. Benedict; No. 16 Spruce Street, 1850. First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. 32 pp. Modern drab wrappers. Ink spot on first 4 leaves, light dusting or foxing. Blistering Account of the oppression of the American Indians, presented before Congress by a Chippewa Indian Chief turned Methodist minister. "George Copway" (i.e. Chief Kah-Ge-Ga-Gah-Bouh) was was born in Ontario in 1818 and was raised as a Chippewa Indian. "His father was an hereditary chief of the Rice Lake Chippewas, a medicine man, and an excellent hunter" (DAB). After his conversion to Methodism he spent his life as a missionary in the Old Northwest. Described in the present volume as "the Chippeway Chief," Copway presents a feigned "sympathetic" portrayal of the oppression of American Indians. With America's great migration westward, "groans of the Indian are occasionally heard by the intoxicated and avaricious throng in the way of complaint; he has waited for justice, while those who have wronged him, like the wild horses of his prairie, neigh over his misfortunes." Copway argues for their rights. The deplorable conduct of white men, including introduction of a variety of diseases, is primarily responsible for the degraded condition of American Indians. He urges that the Indians be granted a vast tract of "unsettled land" between Nebraska and Minnesota, on the eastern banks of the Missouri river. * "While advocating for the sovereignty of tribal nations, he also struggled with the powerful tensions between his own nation's traditional values and institutions and the pull of modernity. His proposed 'organization' for a new Indian territory, along with a bill he drafted and presented to Congress in 1850, contains fascinating insights into his views on the nature of tribalism, native self-governance, the assimilative process, the role of education, and the relationship between the United States and Indian Nations" (SOURCE: David E. Wilkins McKnight, Documents of Native American Political Development: 1500s to 1933, Oxford University Press, 2008, Chapter 11, pp. 81 et sec.). * A copy of the "Bill to Provide for the Organization of an Indian Territory East of the Missouri River" is transcribed on pp. 18-25; this Bill received almost no Congressional support. * Letters and testmonials in support of Copway's plan appear on pp. 26-32. * Howes C771. Field 367. Sabin 16719. Not in Decker or Eberstadt. * Scarce: this appears to be the only copy on the market. Surprisingly, the work is not in Emory or Duke, two of the foremost Methodist libraries in America.

Personal Adventures in Upper and Lower California, in 1848-9, with the Author's Experience at the Mines

William Shoberl, London 1850 - Two volumes, 8vo, pp. 4 (ads), [iii], iv-vii, [viii], 347; [ii], 413, with twenty-three plates from drawings by the author. A handsome set in three-quarter leather and marbled boards, with red and black spine labels, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, extensive gilt decoration on the spines. Rubbing to the joints and lower corners, very occasional minor foxing, small bookplate (Anne Ford) on a front blank of Volume II. Near fine. "Ryan, an Englishman with a taste for adventure, enlisted in 1847 in Stevenson's First Regiment of Californian Volunteers [and] reached Monterey in February 1848. When the regiment was disbanded in August 1848, he went to the Stanislaus River for an unsuccessful try at mining, returning to Monterey in the winter of 1849. He gives a gossipy but quite readable account of his travels and life in California, much of it being trivial but all adding up to a picture of the time" (Streeter 2646). Kurutz (548) says the plates in this work "furnish the reader with some of the best contemporary views of mining, cities, pueblos, and daily life in California." Sabin 74532; Graff 3626; Howes R-558; Cowan p 547, noting "his descriptions are among the best of his time." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

DAS GOLDLAND CALIFORNIEN, ODER: BLEIB' IM LANDE UND ARBEITE FLEISIG.

Leitmeritz: C.W. Medau, 1850. - 84pp. with six engraved scenes on three plates. Original yellow printed paper-covered boards. Minor edge wear, light toning and foxing to text. Near fine. In a brown half morocco clamshell case. A very early account of life in California gold country. "After a brief overview of America, Müller began CALIFORNIA LAND OF GOLD OR STAY AT HOME AND WORK HARD with a business-like look at California history, the gold discovery, mining life, equipment, weather conditions, and routes to California. The second portion is the pitiful story of Friedrich Berwick, a master joiner from Germany, and his unfortunate experiences as a gold seeker." - Kurutz. The illustrations as well as the text make a strong case for staying at home, including a family encountering a coffin-maker, besieged in bed by rats, stumbling through a jungle, and watching a house burn. A truly rare work, with no copies in OCLC. Not listed in Graff or Wagner-Camp. "An apparently unknown Gold Rush narrative. Not in Cowan, Wheat, Sabin, and no copy in auction records; we have never seen another copy" - Eberstadt. HOWES M876, "aa." KURUTZ 456a. EBERSTADT 131:134.

ROCKY-BAR MINING COMPANY, CALIFORNIA. CIRCULAR, ARTICLES OF ASSOCIATION, RESOLUTIONS, ETC. 1850 [wrapper title]

[New York. 1850].. 12pp. Original blue wrappers printed in gold. Old vertical center fold, a few light fox marks, else very good and fresh. In a half cloth and paper archival folder. An early and quite rare California mining stock promotion prospectus. The Rocky-Bar Mining Company was organized in July 1849 as an association of forty miners digging for gold on the Big-Bar on the middle fork of the American River, some seventy miles from Sacramento. From the text: "The Rocky and the Big Bars are considered by the old miners as the richest, or to say the least, among the very richest portions of the gold region in California...It is in the first place freely admitted, that all calculations heretofore made on this subject, are wholly speculative. It is however not impossible that the wildest estimates may be fully realized." According to Kurutz, "over 100 pounds of gold were taken out of the river in less than three weeks. President Philo D. Mickles and Secretary James Delavan wrote the first segment. It is dated November 4, 1850. Delavan...contributed the remainder of the text. Included are two resolutions, dated July 22, 1850, from Big-Bar, and July 29, 1850, from Sacramento City." Delavan, whose name appears in print at the end of this report, was the author of NOTES ON CALIFORNIA AND THE PLACERS (1850), in which he recounts his experiences of 1849 as part of the Feather River Party. "In this scarcely known brochure Delavan gives his narrative of the little band of miners, consisting of himself and 39 others, who went up the Feather River in 1849 and took out upwards of 100 pounds of gold in less than three weeks. Of the forty who started out, only twenty-five were able to withstand the hardships involved, during which they suffered 'everything but death itself from privation, disease and sickness'" - Eberstadt. Wheat referred to the Rocky-Bar Mining Company as "the first organized project for mining quartz in California." The only published California mining promotion preceding this was the report of the American Quicksilver Company of California. Handsomely printed. The Jay Snider copy, with his bookplate on the inside front cover of the archival folder. HOWELL 104 (this copy). COWAN, p.539. VAIL, p.22. SABIN 72456. WHEAT GOLD RUSH 58 (note). KURUTZ 541.

Album of 55 exquisitely colored lithographs and watercolor drawings in the style of Pompeiian frescoes

[Italian?], 1850. Each plate (8-1/2 x 10-1/2 in., and smaller) is tipped to a larger sheet; two are entirely uncolored, another only partially. 1 vols. Folio. Bound together in three quarter red morocco by Pawson & Nicholson, Philadelphia, with their ticket. Rebacked in goatskin, original spine laid down, inner hinges reinforced with period cloth. Exquisite Images of Pompeian Frescoes A superb collection of lovely lithographed images which, in many instances are so delicately and minutely colored as to be indistinguishable from watercolor drawings - and indeed, several of them we believe to be entirely original drawings - each in the style of the ancient art of Pompeii in its frescoes, geometric mosaics, and ceramics. There are scenes of mythological figures (e.g., a satyr cavorting with a goat); scenes of purely decorative nature, suggestive of Pompeian vase art against a black gloss background; domestic scenes of husband, wife, and children; cupids; pastoral scenes; fish and game; and several images of an openly erotic nature suggestive of the relaxed style of Pompeiian attitudes toward nudity.

DAS GOLDLAND CALIFORNIEN, ODER: BLEIB' IM LANDE UND ARBEITE FLEISIG

Leitmeritz: C.W. Medau, 1850.. 84pp. with six engraved scenes on three plates. The second portion is the pitiful story of Friedrich Berwick, a master joiner from Germany, and his unfortunate experiences as a gold seeker..." - Kurutz.

Personal Adventures in Upper and Lower California, in 1848-9, with the Author's Experience at the Mines

London: William Shoberl, 1850. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Two volumes, 8vo, pp. Kurutz (548) says the plates in this work "furnish the reader with some of the best contemporary views of mining, cities, pueblos, and daily life in California." Sabin 74532; Graff 3626; Howes R-558; Cowan p 547, noting "his descriptions are among the best of his time.
