"Run Bill-run and bring Isabella-heres a chimbley on fire

n.p., [c. 1850]. Image approx. 5-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches. Pen and ink and watercolor on paper, initialled "JL", mounted in a larger sheet of paper, matted. . John Leech (1817-1864) was one of the most prolific and successful of the English artists and caricaturists of the mid 19th century. "His humour was like his talent, gentle, warm-hearted and positive, his world, the ups and downs of middle class life, the sports of the squirearchy, and the peccadilloes of army officers and undergraduates" (Houfe). The conventions of social humor he established with his first contributions to the newly founded Punch, in 1841, lasted into the 1920s, but his greatest fame came through his book illustrations, particularly those for Surtees's sporting novels. "Extravagantly praised by Ruskin, Leech's often careless but never crude drawings have survived in charm and humour to give us a refreshing glimpse of mid-Victorian society." (Houfe)

        Dendrortyx Barbatus

John Gould (1804-1881) was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor, from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became an expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was able to meet with the country?s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, ?A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.? For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. His wife Elizabeth and other artists were able to transfer his sketches to stone; hand print and hand color them. Gould became the leading publisher of ornithological illustrations in Victorian Britain, creating over three thousand plates of birds in over forty volumes.John Gould commenced his "A Monograph of the Odontophorinae, or Partridges of America" in 1844 and published it in London in 1850 which contains 32 expertly hand-colored lithographic plates. This folio-sized, hand-colored lithograph from ?Partridges of America? measures 14.25? x 21.25? and is in excellent condition with a few faint foxing marks. Commonly called Bearded Wood-Partridges, these birds are expertly hand-colored with wings in shades of brown, rufous colored undersides and chests and gray necks and faces. Precise lines define and detail each feather and give intricate patterns to their rich plumage.

        Eigenh. Brief m. Unterschrift.

Collingwood bei Hawkhurst, 18. III. 1850.. 4 S., Gr.-8°.. [An den österr. Chemiker u. - Gefaltet. -

The British Dominions in North America; or a Topographical and Statistical Description of the Provinces of Lower and Upper Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, the Islands of Newfoundland, Prince Edward, and Cape Breton, Including Considerations on Land-Granting and Emigration.(TALLIS MAPS) THE BRITISH COLONIES, Vol I & II 8" x 11.3" 7 portraits.Vol. 1: Queen Anne, Prince Rupert, William Pitt, Sir Francis Drake (1/4" rounded top right corner)Vol. 2: Vignette title page, Sir Walter Raleigh, Francis Bacon, Queen Elizabeth6 Tallis maps (double page). The World (on Mercator's Projection), British America, East Canada and New Brunswick, West Canada, North America, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. First published in 1834 and extensively revised and extended over the next twenty years, Martin's comprehensive account of the British Colonies encapsulates the remarkable growth of the British Empire under Queen Victoria, although it is perhaps now most notable for the fine series of highly decorative handcoloured Tallis maps that illustrate it. It has proved a work "puzzling" (Hocken) or "difficult" (Ferguson) to collate and the numerous editions are difficult to identify. This set is not complete but it does contain 7 very nice English Royalty portraits and 5 Tallis Maps on British American with two volumes of support pages of information on Canada.

        Notes and Queries

William John Thoms, 1850 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An extensive set of early issues of the long runningliterary periodical Notes and Queries. Eleven volumes bound in half leather. Encompassing issues No. 1 November 3rd 1849 to Dec 29th 1855, missing July 1853 to Dec 1854 (volume viii). Notes and Queries is a long-running quarterly scholarly journal that publishes short articles related to English language and literature, lexicography, history, and scholarly antiquarianism. The journal has a long history, having been established in 1849 in London; it is now published by Oxford University Press. Notes and Queries was first published in 1849 as a weekly periodical edited by W. J. Thoms. It was founded as an academic correspondence magazine, in which scholars and interested amateurs could exchange knowledge on literature and history. The format consisted of Notes (miscellaneous findings of correspondents that they and the editors considered of interest to the readership), and Queries (and responses to queries), which formed the bulk of the publication. The magazine has been likened to a nineteenth century version of a moderated Internet newsgroup. Condition: The bindings are generally tight and firm. However, the back inner hinge of vol vis taped and the front board of vol vi is detached. Some of the title labels are missing. There is some wear to the extremities, including some fading and rubbing with loss to the leather. The pages are generally clean and bright with mild spotting to the first and last few pages of some of the volumes. Overall the condition is good..

Boston, 1850. 20.3 x 13.5 cm, half-fold menu. Ornately decorated and hand-colored dinner menu marking the twentieth anniversary of Harvard's Class of 1830. The dinner was presided over by Dr. Jonathan Mason Warren (1811-1867), third generation Harvard alumnus and member of the Class of 1832 (Memoir of Jonathan Mason Warren, page 30). A Boston landmark, the Exchange Coffee House on Congress Street was destroyed by fire in 1818, yet Yale historian Paul Freeman notes an 1830 meal held there, indicating its continued presence into the mid-19th century. Menu lightly creased from folding and a bit foxed, otherwise very fine.
