Prijs: ?1.650,-(incl. lijst).

        Rio de Janeiro - Sabatier, c. 1850.

RARE MID 19TH CENTURY VIEW OF RIO DE JANEIRO?Rio-Janeiro?. Lithography by Léon Jean-Babtiste Sabatier and Lauvergue after Sabatier and Bayot, printed at Cattier in Paris for Bulla & Jouy and Ernest Gambart around 1850. Coloured by a later hand. Size (view): 40 x 55,5 cm (sheet: 63 x 79,5 cm).View of Guanabara Bay on May 6, 1843, before princess Francisca, sister of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil, and her husband, François d?Orléans, Prince of Joinville, board the ?Belle Poule?. The couple married in Rio de Janeiro on 1 May 1843 and headed for France in the days thereafter. (Read more about the Marriage Princess Francisca and Prince de Joinville, May 1843)The 60-gun frigate Belle Poule (1828?1888), famous for bringing back the remains of Napoléon from Saint Helena to France in 1840, was under command of the Prince of Joinville.19th-century Empire of Brazil, until 1822 a colony of the Kingdom of Portugal, was under the rule of Emperors Dom Pedro I and his son Dom Pedro II. Unlike most of the neighbouring Hispanic American republics, Brazil had political stability, vibrant economic growth, constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech, and respect for civil rights of its subjects, albeit with legal restrictions on women and slaves. The monarchy managed to bring peace and stability to the country, which eventually became an emerging international power. With prosperity and economic development came an influx of European immigration, including protestants and jews, although Brazil remained mostly catholic. Slavery, which had initially been widespread, was restricted by successive legislation until its final abolition in 1888. Brazilian visual arts, literature and theatre developed during this time of progress. Although heavily influenced by European styles that ranged from Neoclassicism to Romanticism, each concept was adapted to create a culture that was uniquely Brazilian.Until the early years of the 20th century, Rio de Janeiro was largely limited to the neighbourhood now known as the historic city centre, on the mouth of Guanabara Bay.Léon Jean-Babtiste Sabatier (? - 1887) was a French painter, engraver and draftsman who made a number of picturesque views. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1827 to 1870, obtaining a bronze medal in 1839. An other view by Sabatier can be found here.Price: ?1.750,-.

New York 1850 ? Louis Le Breton.

NEW YORK 1850 ?BUSTLING WITH ENERGYLithograph by Auguste Bry after the design of Louis Le Breton, published in Paris by E. Savary around 1850. Coloured by a later hand. Size (image): 32,5 x 48,5 cmLouis Le Breton (1818-1866) was a surgeon in the French Navy from 1836-48. During that period he made several very long expeditions including Dumont d'Urville's second circumnavigation (1837-40) aboard the Astrolabe. During that journey and on subsequent trips, he made drawings and watercolour views of noteworthy places, including Sacramento and San Francisco, New Orleans and Boston, Rio de Janeiro, sites in Oceania, New Zealand and Africa, as well as this view approaching New York. Le Breton's watercolours of the Astrolabe voyage were exhibited at the Salon de Paris during the years 1841-48.The boat in this New York scene is a paddlewheel steamship-triple masted sailing ship: the smoky, dangerous transitional boats that ultimately became all steam and built of steel. We see it steam, pumping out a black funnel of smoke, towards the East River, Fort William on Governor's Island on the right, Fort Clinton at the Battery on the left. As we look at the city, there are a number of fanciful architectural additions mixed with the buildings that were actually there. This is however clearly based on first-hand impressions. The scene the visitor to New York in the 1840s encountered would have been nearly overwhelming. There were far more boats in the harbour than there are today. The lower portion of the island was lined with piers and warehouses. There was an immense amount of activity , both import and export, rapidly establishing New York as the primary American port.Le Breton, in a characteristically French way, added elegant turrets and spires and made the warehouses more evocative than they could have been, but in all communicating a true impression of a city exuding energy.Price: ? 2.950,- (incl. frame).

Pictorial Map of the United States

1850. ENSIGN & THAYER. Pictorial Map of the United States. [Engraved by J.M. Atwood]. New York: Ensigns & Thayer, 1850. Large hand-colored, linen-backed and varnished wall map, measuring 43-1/2 by 30 inches, with decorative border illustrations. Mounted to original rollers, silk matted and framed, entire piece measures 51-1/2 by 37-1/2 inches. $9800.Original large rolling wall map of the United States, altered from Ensigns & Thayer’s 1847 imprint to feature the Gold Regions of California. In response to news of gold in California, “commercial [map] publishers revised and updated previously published maps to take advantage of the gold field interest” (Ristow, 452). This is one such map, first published in 1847 and re-issued in 1849 and 1850 with the denotation, “Gold Region” extending from north to south along the Sierra Nevada foothills. Ensigns & Thayer also used the earlier 1847 map as a template for their famous Map of the Gold Regions of California (1849) (Wheat 84; Peters, 181), which in turn informed this 1850 version of the entire United States. A decorative pictorial border flanks the map on all sides, with depictions of such key historical events as the “Landing of Columbus,” the signing of “The Declaration of Independence,” and the “Battle of Monterey.” New York City lithographers Timothy and Edward Ensign were active in a series of partnerships between 1841 and 1861, working with Phelps and Humphrey, with Horace Thayer (Ensigns & Thayer as here), and finally, as Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. See Wheat III: 75 (609); 149 (713). Minor fraying to linen edges, horizontal cracking near rollers. Coloring fine. Expert repair to map where attached to top roller. Extremely good condition, beautifully framed.

Dispensation Document 'under the Ring of the Fisherman' addressed to J. SERNICOLI, Vicar General in Spiritual Matters of Nicola CAPUTO, (Giovanni M. Mastai-Ferretti, 1792-1878, Pope from 1846 who proclaimed the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception and whose Vatican Council formulated the Dogma of Papal Infallibility)]

1850 - (1774-1862, from 1818 Bishop of Lecce), headed PIUS.PP.IX and signed by the appropriate officials, in Latin with transcription and translation, in a small but clear hand, explaining that the Pope has received a petition from Nicola Serinelli, layman, and Vita Antonia Miglietta, of the Diocese of Lecce, who, knowing that they are related in the First and Second Degrees of Affinity, in that Nicola's first wife, now deceased, was Vita Antonia's aunt (or just possibly niece or granddaughter), need the Pope's permission to marry. Owing to lack of means, Nicola cannot come in person to the Roman Curia, both of them existing only by their own labour and industry. Although they have not had carnal knowledge, suspicion has already arisen, and unless they get married Vita Antonia will remain gravely defamed and scandal will arise. Sernicoli is to get independent information about them, to examine them, separately and then together, about the truth of all their statements, and to make sure the proposed marriage is not because Vita Antonia has suffered rape. Dispensation depends first on absolution with penance, in order to remove ecclesiastical or civil censure or proceedings. The Pope lays the fitness of this on Sernicoli's judgment and conscience. If Sernicoli is satisfied, he can convey the Pope's Dispensation, they can marry in Church using the Tridentine rite, and Sernicoli will declare any offspring legitimate. If however Sernicoli asks for any fee for this process, or accepts one if offered, he will himself be excommunicated. Red circular stamp of St Peter in a fishing boat, vellum, 1 side 11

Autograph Letter Signed, to an unidentified recipient, New York, October 16, 1850 quarto, one page in very good, very clean condition.

Autograph Letter Signed, to an unidentified recipient, New York, October 16, 1850 quarto, one page in very good, very clean condition. Noah writes a letter of introduction for one Signor Filleponte, who was to give lectures on the Roman Revolution of 1848: "Dear Sir, Signor Filleponte who will have the pleasure of handing you this letter proposes delivering a course of Lectures on the Roman Revolution of 1848 he having with Genl Avezzani taking a conspicuous part in the affairs of the Republic. He is also a literary gentleman of distinguished merit & proposes to publish a work on the secret history of the Government of Rome. Will you have the goodness to extend to him the usual courtesies of the Press & to believe me always truly yours M M Noah Ny Octo 16 1850" Mordecai Manuel Noah was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Manuel Mordecai Noah, a failed businessman, and Zipporah Phillips. He was orphaned at the age of seven and was raised by his grandparents Jonas and Rebecca (Machado) Phillips. In his youth in Philadelphia and later in Charleston, South Carolina, he published journalistic pieces, a political pamphlet, a critique of Shakespeare, and two plays. Thanks in part to recommendation from influential American Jews, he won appointment in 1811 as America's first consul to Riga. War intervened and he never assumed the post; instead, in 1813 he became U. S. consul to Tunis. The government hoped that he would be able to forge special ties with influential Jews in North Africa and entrusted him with an additional secret mission: to devise a "means for the liberation" of eleven captive American seamen in Algiers. Noah's efforts to free American captives were mostly unsuccessful. Only two seamen were released, the ransom paid was excessive, and the secret agent Noah appointed, Richard R. Keene, turned out to have an unsavory past. Although Noah carried out his other consular duties successfully and also established ties with local Tunis Jews, Secretary of State James Monroe recalled him in 1815, ostensibly on religious grounds. In fact, the failed secret mission really precipitated the recall. In the wake of the recall, Noah published Correspondence and Documents (1816) in his own defense, followed by Travels in England, France, Spain and the Barbary States in the Years 1813-14 and 15 (1819), his most important book. It describes his experiences abroad and contains valuable information on early nineteenth-century Tunisian Jewry. Back in New York City, Noah resumed his career in political journalism. He edited the National Advocate and, later, important New York newspapers such as the New York Enquirer, the Evening Star, and the Sunday Times and Noah's Weekly Messenger. In return for his editorial support, he also held a variety of appointive political posts, serving as sheriff of New York (1821-1822), grand sachem of the Tammany Society (1824), surveyor and inspector of the New York port (1829-1832), and judge in the New York Court of Sessions (1841-1842). In his spare time he returned to the theater, earning a reputation through his reviews as "the finest theatrical critic of the day in America." He also wrote several plays, notably She Would Be a Soldier (1819). Noah's prominence propelled him to leadership within the Jewish community. As early as 1818 he delivered the main address at the consecration of the Second Mill Street Synagogue of New York's Congregation Shearith Israel. He used the occasion to instruct Jews concerning their own history and condition, traced Jewish rights in every country, and then concluded, patriotically, that "OUR COUNTRY [is] the bright example of universal tolerance, of liberality, true religion, and good faith." To his mind, America was the Jewish people's "chosen country" - at least until Jews could "recover their ancient rights and dominions, and take their rank among the governments of the earth." Two years later, on January 16 1820, Noah laid before the New York legislature a petition requesting that it survey, value, and sell him Grand Island in the Niagra River to serve as a colony for the Jews of the world. The petition was tabled. Five years later, however, an investor acting on Noah's behalf purchased 2,555 choice acres on the eastern shore of the island, and on 15 September 1825 Noah staged an elaborate dedication ceremony for a colony to be called Ararat, a refuge for persecuted Jews around the world. Titling himself Judge of Israel and dressed in a regal costume, Noah issued a proclamation complete with a series of decrees. Among other things, he called on Jews to remain loyal to governments that protected them, to undertake a worldwide census, to abolish polygamy (practiced by Jews in Muslim lands), and to learn how to read and write. He also levied a three shekel head tax "upon each Jew throughout the world." In a lengthy address, he then explained the details of his colonization plan, including its implications for America and for ultimate Jewish restoration to Palestine. Here, as in so many of his other pronouncements on Jewish affairs, he sought to prove that he could be a good citizen as well as a good Jew, helping his people and his country at the same time. Although Ararat attracted attention throughout much of the Jewish world, it proved a complete failure: it never progressed beyond the original cornerstone. Still, Noah remained active in Jewish affairs, playing a particularly effective role vis-à-vis the non-Jewish community, where he was greatly respected. He explained Jewish practices in his newspapers, defended Jews whenever he saw them attacked, and promoted Jewish charities. He also delivered celebrated addresses on Jewish themes, including one, in 1837, arguing that the Indians were descendants of the lost ten tribes of Israel and another, in 1845, seeking Christian help in promoting restoration of the Jews to Palestine. Noah died in New York from the effects of a paralyzing stroke. His funeral attended by Jews and non-Jews alike, was probably the largest funeral of any Jew in America to that time. - American National Biography, volume 16, pp., 466-467 See also, Dictionary of American Biography, volume VII, pp., 534-534

        J M J (sic) - Petit Dictionnaire a Noemi Denoailly

France, 1850 (ca.). Very good antiquarian condition. Manuscript, 16mo (130 × 95 mm). 24 pp. ruled in double columns, edges cut with alphabetical index tabs. Original salmon colored wrappers, stitched with pink ribbon, upper cover titled in manuscript. Worn along spine (but perfectly sound), covers slightly faded. Highly curious little manuscript "Dictionary" complete with neatly cut and lettered index tabs. Possibly created as a teaching aid in the guise of a juvenile amusement, this manuscript contains mostly alliterative word pairings which can only be explained as tongue-twisters or simply nonsense. A random sampling: "assaisonner / anchois," "goulotte / goutte d’eau," "microscope / metallique," "saucisson / sillon," and "succulent / successivement" are among the ca. 280 similar entries. Daniela Kromp, of Munich, kindly directs us to an ingeniously folded letter written by a young Neomi Denoailly to her mother, dated 1845, which is preserved in the archives of the Musee National de l’Education in Paris (Inventory No. 1979.32153). This is the only other reference to Neomi Denoailly known to us. The monogram “J.M.J.” (written along the top of the front cover) has resisted identification.

Appointed to be read in churches. London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow: William Mackenzie, [n.d., ca. 1850]. Folio. (Measures 9 3/4 x 13 x 5/12 x 3 3/4 in. (thick); 250 x 335 x 93 mm. (thick). Illustrated with thirty full-page engravings by various artists, including a frontispiece and a vignette title-page (titled The Family Bible, With Copious Notes and References), two engravings by J. Stephens from photographs of the Holy Land by Frith, and six engravings after John Martin’s Old Testament illustrations ("The Fall of Man," "The Destruction of Pharaoh's Host," "Joshua commanding the sun to stand still," "By Babel's Streams We Sat and Wept," "Belshazzar's Feast," and "The Fall of Nineveh"). The accounts of their greatness and splendor may have been exaggerated. But, where strict truth is not essential, the mind is content to find delight in the contemplation of the grand and the marvelous. Into the solemn visions of antiquity we look without demanding the clear daylight of truth. Seen through the mist of ages, the great becomes gigantic, the wonderful swells into the sublime’" (Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790 to 1914, p. 44). At the front of the Bible are three leaves of a family history, partially inscribed with the births, deaths, and marriages of three generations of the Hubbard family of Derby, England, during the years 1889-1943.         Report of the Debates in the Convention of California, on the Formation of the State Constitution, in September and October, 1849.

John T. Towers, Washington DC 1850 - Octavo, 479pp., plus Appendix. Very good in original brown stamped cloth boards, marred by a 2-inch portion missing from the top of the spine, where the title would be, and wearing at the corners and spine heads. Ex-library, but with minimal markings and no pocket in rear. An important association copy, INSCRIBED by the author on the front paste-down to Henry B. Anthony, who at the time of publication was governor of Rhode Island, and an influential member of the Whig party (he later joined the Know-Nothings and then the Republican Party) Later elected to the Senate from Rhode Island, Anthony eventually rose to become President Pro Tempore of the Senate. This book, which contains the minutes of the discussion of the constitutional convention of California, contains long passages about issues that are eerily relevant today, including the use of English and Spanish in official state documents, immigration regulations, and California's relationship with Mexico. But for the disappointing missing spine piece, a very nice, unrestored and original copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Letter handwritten and signed by architect George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878).

Not published, London 1850 - Three page letter written and signed by English architect George Gilbert Scott. Written to Rev. Edwin Baines? Dated August 10th, 1850, it reads "My dear Sir, I ought to have apologized for sending an imperfect drawing of the roof. I found when I can to refer to my tracing or your plan that I did not know its' scale so that I might have got quite wrong. I was also puzzled as to fitting it to the apse. N Lomen? your Builder should send me the plan or what he prefers in this ???? I will make any suggestions which occur to me. I confess I am not partial to a gold coloured glazing. I think however the majority of the "Cathedral" plan is much too cold. I have however seen the Cath[edral[ of a warmer green which is much better I think. I obtained the specimen I saw from Mr. Wailes of Newcastle. Perhaps the best way is to get a large number of the carvers and to select from among them ?? ??? wjocj seems most pleasing. Here the yellow kind, you would not like. I remain my obedient yours faithfully [signed] Geo: Gilbert Scott." Some of the words are not legible but it is clear that Scott is providing reccomenation for materials selection for a Cathedral renovation or construction. Prominent in the Gothic Revival, Scott designed many public structures. Director of a vast amount of Gothic restoration work, beginning with renovations of Ely Cathedral (1847), including Westminster Abbey (upon the North Front Chapter House), and many other cathedrals and churches. His design for the Church of St. Nicholas in Hamburg, Germany won first place in an 1844 competition. Among his other designs were the buildings for the British Home and Foreign Office (1860-1870), the Albert Memorial, and St. Pancras Station in London. He is buried in Westminster Abbey. His grandson is Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Size: Octavo (8vo) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Erotic satire of the Tales of Genji)

1850 - Three small quarto volumes. (18)pp., + 13ff. plates. A colorful example of Japanese shunga by the popular and successful Edo-period ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kunisada. Shunga, which literally translates to "pictures of spring," are Japanese erotic images that celebrate sexual pleasure. They were created by iconic artists such as Utamaro, Hokusai, and Kunisada, and were enjoyed by men and women of all social classes. This particular three-volume set is a satire of the Tales of Genji. Scrolls at the top of each spread show chaste scenes of courtly love from the Tales, while the explicit images below show what Kunisada suspects was actually going on. The illustrations are vibrant and detailed, showcasing Kunisada's skill. Colin Franklin describes the rich colors as: "all stops pulled out for an organ-blast of color printing." Extraordinarily complete: in the original bindings with pictorial title slips, housed in the original box with the same title slip, and including the color-printed dust jacket. One broken thread on the third volume, but an otherwise remarkable survival in this fine condition. (Exploring Japanese Books and Scrolls, p. 74). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
