Prijs: ?2.250,- (incl. lijst).

The Present State of Moral Principle in the Supreme Government of the British Colonial Empire... Not Published.

London: Prined by G. Barclay, 1850. Slim octavo, 45 pp., in recent tan half calf, marbled boards. Very rare privately published work by the former Governor of South Australia, and the last serious effort he made to rehabilitate his reputation in his vicious quarrels with his successor, George Grey.Gawler, who had been Governor of South Australia from 1838-41, had returned to London with his reputation in tatters, in no small part due to the energetic self-promotion of Governor Grey. Gawler had petitioned hard to have his efforts recognised, but was trumped by Grey at every turn, and by the late 1840s had all but given up any public role. It is interesting, therefore, that in 1850 he wrote the present work, 'a petition to the Queen seeking redress for the injustices done to him by successive secretaries of state. He accused George Grey of dishonesty and claimed that through his own efforts South Australia was 'the only cheap and brilliantly successful new colony in modern history'. On 11 July 1850 he was informed that Earl Grey had laid the petition before the Queen 'but could not advise her Majesty to give any orders on the subject' (ADB).Gawler's publication is understandably rare. Ferguson originally found only a copy in the then Public Library of South Australia, and another has since been noted in the National Library. Very good.

Raphael's Witch! ! ! Or, the Oracle of the Future, By the Author of the Prophetic Messenger. With Ten Coloured Designs on Copper By Robert Cruikshank & the Author, and a Piece of Music By Blewitt.

William Charlton Wright, London 1850 - Hardcover. Small octavo: 7 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches (approx 18.5cm x 11cm) 216pp. Original textured cloth with paper title-alabel to spine. Engraved title page with vignette and two large folding engraved plates. Tables, graphs and diagrams in-text. The fifth edition (1850) of "Raphael's Witch," a work that was first published in 1831. Its pseudonymous author was Robert Cross Smith (1795-1832), an alchemist and astrologer with a broad interest in the occult, who supported himself by publishing astrological books and journals. He was clearly influenced by Francis Barrett's "The Magus," and is said to have been a member of an occult circle run by Barrett to which Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton also belonged. The "ten coloured designs" mentioned in the title comprised the title vignette, and the "panels" of the two fold out engraved plates. The folding plates are entitled respectively "The Mystical Wheel of Pythagoras" and "The Tablet of Questions & The Cabalistical Tablet of the Stars" show various magical scenes, notably: Raphael in his Study; and a Passage in the Life of the Astrologer; Raphael in Italy; A fair and beauteous vision - The Enchantress of the Waters; The Necromancer; The grotesque dance of Gnomes, Elves and Sybils; The Sylphs and Firies in Moonlight Gambols; The Vision of Love; The Witch of Pompeii; and The Awful Fate of Pompeii; along with "the mystical wheel of Pythagoras" etc. While the plates are described as coloured, they are not so in this copy, which was quite common with this edition. Corners bruised, cloth a little rubbed at the edges, paper spine label heavily rubbed worn and chipped, and largely illegible. The first fold-out has two short tears at the folds, whilst the second has a slightly longer tear at the folds. Title page a little darkened, and occasional light browning throughout. Obviously used, but still a VG or better copy: complete and in better condition than often encountered. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

New York 1850 ? Louis Le Breton.

NEW YORK 1850 ?BUSTLING WITH ENERGYLithograph by Auguste Bry after the design of Louis Le Breton, published in Paris by E. Savary around 1850. Coloured by a later hand. Size (image): 32,5 x 48,5 cmLouis Le Breton (1818-1866) was a surgeon in the French Navy from 1836-48. During that period he made several very long expeditions including Dumont d'Urville's second circumnavigation (1837-40) aboard the Astrolabe. During that journey and on subsequent trips, he made drawings and watercolour views of noteworthy places, including Sacramento and San Francisco, New Orleans and Boston, Rio de Janeiro, sites in Oceania, New Zealand and Africa, as well as this view approaching New York. Le Breton's watercolours of the Astrolabe voyage were exhibited at the Salon de Paris during the years 1841-48.The boat in this New York scene is a paddlewheel steamship-triple masted sailing ship: the smoky, dangerous transitional boats that ultimately became all steam and built of steel. We see it steam, pumping out a black funnel of smoke, towards the East River, Fort William on Governor's Island on the right, Fort Clinton at the Battery on the left. As we look at the city, there are a number of fanciful architectural additions mixed with the buildings that were actually there. This is however clearly based on first-hand impressions. The scene the visitor to New York in the 1840s encountered would have been nearly overwhelming. There were far more boats in the harbour than there are today. The lower portion of the island was lined with piers and warehouses. There was an immense amount of activity , both import and export, rapidly establishing New York as the primary American port.Le Breton, in a characteristically French way, added elegant turrets and spires and made the warehouses more evocative than they could have been, but in all communicating a true impression of a city exuding energy.Price: ? 2.950,- (incl. frame).

Public Squares, Parks, and Places in the City of New York

D.T. Valentine 1850 - Map. Lithograph. Image measures 8 3/4 x 21 7/8" This map, compiled by Francis Nicholson in 1838, assembles 17 squares, parks, and public places in New York onto a single sheet. Locations include Battery, Bowling Green, Duane Park, The Park [at City Hall], Hudson Square, Five Point Park, Abingdon Square, Washington Square, Tompkins Square, Union Place, Stuyvesant Square, Bloomingdale Square, Gramercy Park, Madison Square, Hamilton Square, Manhattan Square, Observatory Place and Mount Morris. Each map shows the layout of the surrounding streets ad give's the place's dimensions and acreage. This edition of the map was lithographed by H.A. Robinson in the mid 19th-century and published in the 1850 edition of the "Manual of The Corporation of the City of New York." It is in good condition with minor browning at the folds. The left outside margin is incomplete but does not interfere with the image. D.T. Valentine (1801-1869) served as the Deputy to the Clerk of the Common Council for thirty-seven years and began publishing the Manuals in 1841. The Manuals were directories of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York, richly illustrated with maps, lithographs, and engravings. This unusual yet charming maps serves as a reminder of the rapid taming of nature that accompanied New York's 19th century industrialization and development.

Public Squares, Parks, and Places in the City of New York

D.T. Valentine, 1850. unbound. Map.

Neuer Anti-Kant oder Prüfung der Kritik der reinen Vernunft nach den in Bolzano's Wissenschaftslehre niedergelegten Begriffen. Bautzen: A. Weller, 1850.

      - Very rare first edition of Bernhard Bolzano's radical criticisms of Kant, produced in collaboration with his friend and pupil Franz Prihonsky and published shortly after his death. Bolzano was born in 1781, the year in which Kant's Critique of Pure Reason was published, and died in 1848, the year of Gottlob Frege's birth. As a 'Kant & Bolzano' conference announcement put it (University of Oldenburg, 2011), these dates are highly symbolic because Bolzano’s work is an essential link between transcendental and analytic philosophy. 'The value of New Anti-Kant rests at once in the fabulous richness of Bolzano's own theories as well as the diligence and insight with which he approached Kant's Critique. After a 'Preface' that motivates the need for such a project, the volume begins with an 'Introduction' that contains a concise and very helpful summary of those of Bolzano's doctrines that are most relevant to the criticisms that follow. The main part, the 'Treatise', consists of a systematic examination of the entirety of the first Critique. Towards the end, it also engages in an extensive discussion of the moral theory found in Kant's other writings. Throughout [it] alternates between extremely economical, well-articulated little digests of Kant's main doctrines following the order in which they appear in the Critique, followed by 'Objections' and 'Remarks' in which Prihonsky deftly recapitulates the essence of Bolzano's concerns with the Kantian philosophy . Beyond the originality and intelligence of its critical perspective, New Anti-Kant thus has the merit of offering an exhaustive discussion of Kant's philosophy, one which devotes its attention to both the doctrines of the Critique that have traditionally been of most interest to Kant scholars as well as those doctrines that are too often overlooked. By thoughtfully engaging with the full scope of Kant's views, New Anti-Kant also introduces readers to Bolzano's own positions in both theoretical and practical philosophy, as well as his philosophy of religion (Sandra Lapointe and Clinton Tolley, 'Introduction' to the Palgrave Macmillan English edition, 2014). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 12mo, xxiv, 233, [1] pp., rebound in modern half cloth with the original printed front wrapper laid down, title-page with a small paper flaw and lightly browned at outer edge, otherwise internally fresh and clean, without stamps, inscriptions or any other marks, a very good copy.         A perspective view of the Thames and the Thames Tunnel. History of the Thames Tunnel.

Azulay, s. d.

RARE MID 19TH CENTURY VIEW OF RIO DE JANEIRO?Rio-Janeiro?. Lithography by L?on Jean-Babtiste Sabatier and Lauvergue after Sabatier and Bayot, printed at Cattier in Paris for Bulla & Jouy and Ernest Gambart around 1850. Coloured by a later hand. Size (view): 40 x 55,5 cm (sheet: 63 x 79,5 cm).View of Guanabara Bay on May 6, 1843, before princess Francisca, sister of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil, and her husband, Fran?ois d?Orl?ans, Prince of Joinville, board the ?Belle Poule?. The couple married in Rio de Janeiro on 1 May 1843 and headed for France in the days thereafter. (Read more about the Marriage Princess Francisca and Prince de Joinville, May 1843)The 60-gun frigate Belle Poule (1828?1888), famous for bringing back the remains of Napol?on from Saint Helena to France in 1840, was under command of the Prince of Joinville.19th-century Empire of Brazil, until 1822 a colony of the Kingdom of Portugal, was under the rule of Emperors Dom Pedro I and his son Dom Pedro II. Unlike most of the neighbouring Hispanic American republics, Brazil had political stability, vibrant economic growth, constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech, and respect for civil rights of its subjects, albeit with legal restrictions on women and slaves. The monarchy managed to bring peace and stability to the country, which eventually became an emerging international power. With prosperity and economic development came an influx of European immigration, including protestants and jews, although Brazil remained mostly catholic. Slavery, which had initially been widespread, was restricted by successive legislation until its final abolition in 1888. Brazilian visual arts, literature and theatre developed during this time of progress. Although heavily influenced by European styles that ranged from Neoclassicism to Romanticism, each concept was adapted to create a culture that was uniquely Brazilian.Until the early years of the 20th century, Rio de Janeiro was largely limited to the neighbourhood now known as the historic city centre, on the mouth of Guanabara Bay.L?on Jean-Babtiste Sabatier (? - 1887) was a French painter, engraver and draftsman who made a number of picturesque views. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1827 to 1870, obtaining a bronze medal in 1839. An other view by Sabatier can be found here.Price: ?1.750,-.
